Terrible steak.
I ordered steak, chips and salad. Was very disappointed when the medium steak I had ordered came out well done, full of gristle and so tough that I couldnโt eat it. Salad was just iceberg lettuce with a small amount of grated carrot on top and a tiny piece of tomato. Chips were good. Would not go again.

Great service, lovely meal and drinks at a reasonable price. Willing to adjust meal if have an allergy at no extra cost. Value for money. Very impressed and recommended.
Be the first to ReplyGreat little pub
Great little pub with cheap food and drinks. The wine list is very nice with some good quality wines at reasonable prices. The food is pub food but it is good and it is very reasonably priced. Ended up going two nights in a row. It is quite busy but I guess that is an indication that people want good service and value for money.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was so good - we went back the next night!
This place was so good in regards to the food - we went back the next night! Both nights the food was exceptional! Also the food was sensibly priced! We had steak both nights and we just couldn't get over the value - hint: You must book!
Be the first to ReplySeafood platter for One is huge
Our group booked ahead but we had to order and pay individually. Place was super busy but the service was efficient and timely - no-one had to wait too long. The menu is extensive and includes specials. I wanted to try local seafood so ordered the platter for one. A good selection of seafood and definitely too much for one person. A bit stuffy, crowded and noisy but the atmosphere was social. Looks like a popular place - it stayed busy the whole time we were there. Walking distance from Best Western Hotel.

Food options rather limited, maybe because food is sourced from local producers. Very good chicken schnitzel.
Be the first to ReplyOne fantastic meal in Hobart
Absolutely fabulous! Food was amazing and great value for money. Ordered a garlic cheesy bread as an entree and when it arrived it feed the three of us with bread to spare. Husband had the 550g rump steak for $32 and loved it. He asked for chips and salad and these were plentiful as well! He also had the mushroom sauce which he complimented many times. It seemed most meals were served with your choice of vegetables or chips and salad. Mother in law had the grilled barramundi with vegetables and was not disappointed. For under $25 mum got a beautifully grilled piece of fish served with more vegetables than she could eat. I had the Morton Bay bugs with mornay sauce served with chips and salad for $20. The serve included three half bugs and I enjoyed every bite. As with mum the side serve of chips and salad was more than I could eat. We rang early in the day and booked a table and were glad we did - it was extremely busy. Staff were fantastic and friendly and busy busy busy. There is no table service so donโt forget to make your way to the bar in the restaurant to order. Speed of receiving of meals was also impeccable! Food served hot also. I have not got one negative thing to say about our experience! Do yourself a favour and head in for a great time out and a wonderful impressive meal.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, great place
What a great place to eat. Having discovered this place on previous trips we enthusiastically go back. This is a pub. The food is inexpensive and tasty, great portions and a good variety. I have had a number of items off the menu and my favourite is either Chicken Parmigiana ($16) or Turbo Seafood basket ($18). My wife loves the 200g steak ($18). The bread is amazing. You never go home hungry. The staff are go,go,go. Very friendly and very efficient. They have a great fire burning in the bar when it is cold. The clientele is noisy but happy. Absolutely love it. We'll be back next trip.
Be the first to ReplyGreat pub meal and deserts were great as well
Was a great surprise to visit this hotel the food was great and such a great surprise with so many choices to have from fish to stews
Be the first to ReplyValue and Vibe
We stayed 2 nights in Hobart and both nights we had dinner at this hotel. The food was exceptional value for money. The service and ambience was also outstanding. There are no bookings taken for seating. It is a first come first served set up and for us it was perfect. A big shout out to Dave the manager who runs a very well drilled team
Be the first to ReplyConsistently excellent
Consistently always good. Perfect place for a proper meal and a basic pub feed. Family favourite for us, come here at least once a month.
Be the first to ReplyFriendly place for a drink but food was ordinary but plenty of it.
Very friendly and popular pub with big open fire, always busy and will do there best to find you a seat so you can eat. Food is usual pub food at reasonable price. Ordered roast pork which turned out to be shoulder which was very fatty and crumbed tasmasian oysters which were average.
Be the first to ReplyFriendly Family Pub
My Son & I took a walk to the outskirts of Hobart CBD and came across this pub on a Friday night. It was packed with friendly locals & their families. Staff were friendly and both dinner & drinks were well priced (we just missed happy hour).
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, great price, great atmosphere
If you are after a traditional old pub feel, with good food, friendly team and value for money, you need the shamrock. Been twice now and have been very satisfied with our food and drink. No frills, no fancy fuss, just good quality, tasty food served quickly at a good price. Highly recommend, just wish it was around the corner from our place near Brisbane. Give it a go, you won't be sorry.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, friendly atmosphere
Went for dinner and found the place packed, waited and had a quiet drink , beer and wine. When the room emptied a bit we found a table, the staff were very helpful, we tried the Rump special, as we had seen other patrons having that. We were not disappointed, it was the best Rump steak, I had tried cor some time cooked to perfection, medium rare, with mushroom sauce and veggies. Friendly staff, clean atmosphere, really enjoyed the visit and will go again whilst in Hobart. KevM
Be the first to ReplyUsed to be good
Shamrock used to have the best tucker in Hobart, today had roast beef that must have come from a water buffalo in west borneo and cooked for a eternity...tough as old boots, spuds where undercooked, other vegies where out of a frozen pkt, 40 acres of corn...wont be heading back in a hurry
Be the first to ReplyYummo
Porterhouse steak was beautifully done and super tasty, partner has scotch fillet which he enjoyed, and we would both come back again for the well priced meals and cold tap drinks

Be the first to ReplyDisappointing overall
The Shamrock Hotel has been famous for it's counter meals for a very long time. But times have changed for sure. It's been a while since we dropped in for their food - and I won't be back. Yes, they're very well-priced and yes, it's popular. Menu is large, drinks are readily available, service is fast and friendly. My meal, however, was okay except for cold old chips on all our plates (I mean stone cold) and a rump steak I couldn't even cut, let alone eat. The one piece of steak I managed to wrangle off was so tough I couldn't chew it. I mentioned it to the lady in charge who apologised. The rest of the meals were quite good, but those couple of items were enough for me not to return.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible staff
Had just really bad experience in Shamrock Bar on 8th Jan 2023 around 2pm, we ordered two rump steaks, the horrible staff even did not ask how'd to cook when she took order and just brought over-cooked, more than well done black steaks, and the terrible staff with a racist tone said that's what supposed to be.
Be the first to ReplyClassic Aussie pub.
There is nothing special about this pub . . . except that it serves classic Aussie pub meals in a friendly, cheerful, and welcoming way. Which is just what you want from a pub in Hobart. It looks like nothing from the outside but is full of locals and thatโs usually my go-to for a decent feed. We had the steaks, and they were cooked exactly as we asked for. Great selection of beers and wines โ local and mainland. All at a reasonable price. Staff are on the ball and very patient with us for our first visit to this pub. We will be back next time we are in Tassie. Cate.
Be the first to ReplyGood pub meals
Good choice of menu items, service was good, meals were delivered in reasonable time and were well cooked and substantial enough and reasonably priced.
Be the first to ReplyGone downhill
So I havenโt been to the Shamrock in about 9 years, maybe longer. Iโve been saying to my partner for a couple of years now that we needed to go to the Shamrock together as heโd never been, I told him how great it was back in the day. Safe to say I was embarrassed that Iโd dragged us there for date night. I love a good chicks parmi, and because of the wide range of parmigianas they had, I thought itโd be just as great as it was so long ago. Clearly owners have been changed sometime in the last decade, because the food was nothing to write home about. The schnitzel was thin and d dry, not thick and crispy like a good parmi usually is. It tasted just like my homemade parmi that I make - fine, but nothing to rave about. I guess for $16 what can you expect, still disappointing nonetheless. My partner had the mixed grill, which I also tried - disappointing! Although tender, the steak was very charcoaly and just not pleasant. The burger pattie was dry and no flavour, the sausage was terrible. The chorizo slices were the most enjoyable part of his meal. The chips were delicious, no complaints there. We were seated right near the kitchen door, and one of the waitresses walked by thumping the ground so loudly that our table and the cutlery shook each time she walked past. I get itโs a small space, so ok. First world problems. Service was pleasant enough. Just wouldnโt recommend the food. Donโt waste your money - this place seems to have gone downhill just like the Ocean Child.
Be the first to ReplyBest pub meal ever
We ate here last night. The dining room is so clean. The staff are soo friendly and the atmosphere great. The food was so tasty and meat really moist. We had rump steak and small roast pork. Iโm glad I didnโt order the large roast as this plate was huge. Will definitely come again
Be the first to ReplyGREAT PUB AND GREAT LUNCH
Stopped into this pub as it came highly recommended and it lived up to the high praise.
We had lunch and a couple of beers here during our stay in Hobart and lunch was delicious and the beers cold.
The staff were really nice and friendly and we really enjoyed our visit to this iconic Hobart pub.
