Sarma Restaurant Somerville Reviews from The Last Year
Cannot rate the food - never got to have it.
10 minutes after being seated the power went out and the restaurant filled with smoke (so not great ambiance). The manager came by and gave us his card and apologized and asked us to leave because the restaurant was closing for the night. He offered to make us a priority for a re-reservation but that didn't work for us because I had guests in town and specifically made special effort to make this reservation for them a month in advance. I had the idea to go to Oleana, their sister restaurant, who did manage to squeeze us a tiny corner and feed us about 1.5 hours later. However at that point we were tired and frustrated and hungry and Oleana's food was not enough to impress in that state. I'm still frustrated that neither restaurant did anything solid to apologize for the experience and will probably not visit either again. I've also heard from other friends that this also happened to them at Sarma which makes me think it's a common experience. Beware if you make a reservation a month in advance like me for a nice occasion - you want to have a backup option!
Wow! This menu felt so vibrant.
Our favorite dishes were the Grilled Octopus Ceviche and Scallop Tagine. And the Cheese Dog Gyro is a fun dish. They could open a takeout window that serves just that! Staff was very attentive. And they treated us with a complimentary dessert, as they knew we were there for our anniversary. Their hospitality reminded me of Richie from The Bear after he transformed into a service fiend from working at that restaurant with the British lady. I digress... we can't wait to be back to try more of the menu! Keep up the good work, Sarma crew!
Had my birthday dinner here and it did not disappoint!
Had my birthday dinner here and it did not disappoint! Everything was tapas style and went with a group of 5. We shared around 6 plates with plenty to go around. My recommendation is the pork souvlaki and the Brussel sprouts 10/10. The service was a little absent towards the end but it was a packed packed restaurant. Will be coming back very soon! Reservation required and looks like a month lead time

I am in town for a few days and saw this place was 1200 feet from my rental. I walked over around 7pm and the place was packed on a Monday night. The place has a funky vibe between the colors, the brick, open kitchen and music selection. Cocktails were on pointe and every single thing was flawless. I had the zucchini fritters which are more like a bread pudding consistency. Perfect, creamy, little pops of pomegranate and pepitas. Next I had the baby artichokes which have a handful of different vegetables in it as well. Delicious. I ate the leftovers tonight with a spoonful of hummus. I would recommend getting the warm bread to go with this dish since it was rich. Lastly I had the lamb sliders which are perfection. The yogurt is so rich against the pickles and the spice is just right. The staff was on it and hustled in a way that showed their passion for the restaurant and that they are awesome! The bartenders recommended 2-3 items per person. I know I cannot eat a lot at one sitting but I wanted to try multiple things. I just had some of the leftovers for dinner and could likely get a third serving from it. Yes you should go! Yes you should make a reservation.

Probably the best place to eat in Boston! The place was poppin on a Saturday night. The wait will be long but you can always grab a drink at the bar and hang out. I highly recommend getting the corn bread! I would suggest going as a group so you can order and try more things on the menu. Heads up this place will be kinda pricey.
I saw really good reviews on tiktok so I wanted to give it
I saw really good reviews on tiktok so I wanted to give it a try. Getting a reservation was hard. I looked about 2 weeks in advanced and there were no reservations left. I had to click for a notification. Overall the food was mediocre. It came out really fast.. it took about 5 minutes for the first dish to come out... spent about $112 (not w/ tip) definitely not worth the price point :( - tuna tacos: 2/5 ... I think there were pickled carrots on there.. and that's really all you can taste. Not worth the $25 .. - lamb sliders: 1/5 it tasted really meaty which personally did not like.. and the sauce made it sour - Brussel sprouts: 2.5/5 the Brussel sprouts itself were made well.. it was not bad but it could be a lot better - calamari: 1/5 .. nothing was Kung pao about it. It had a char sour taste - keeping my groove: 5/5 cocktail was great
We've eaten here a few times prior to our meal a couple
We've eaten here a few times prior to our meal a couple nights ago. Every time the food was amazing and I would easily give 5 stars. But after this past dinner I'm giving 4 stars but 3.5 is probably more accurate. We had 5 small plates and dessert... Very good - pork souvlaki and the snap peas. Good - artichokes and fried chicken. Average - halva bites. Terrible - kung pao calamari. The calamari was so bad that we couldn't eat it. It was so mushy and had an odd and not great flavor. It's hard to describe, except that it was really bad. We had two cocktails from the menu and they were both good but not great. Service was excellent and we really liked our server
Thank you Sarma for giving me a favorite restaurant in
Thank you Sarma for giving me a favorite restaurant in Boston! They're rated by several sources as one of Boston's top restaurants, for good reason. Reservations are difficult to come by but they seem to have a decent amount of seating by the bar. Dishes are not delicious and made with high quality ingredients, they're also beautifully presented and very creative with the flavors. My favorites were the cornbread (very filling, loved the peppers and feta inside) and duck (super juicy and flavorful); would 100% order again. Fried chicken (off-menu; from what I can tell, it comes out about every hour, starting roughly at 5:30) was very solid. I greatly enjoyed the Brussels sprouts, which also were super flavorful (loved that garlic aioli on the bottom). For dessert we had the "baklava cones", which was a light, refreshing way to end the meal.

I went back to Sarma tonight after a long hiatus and I was delighted by the experience. The service was wonderful - water glasses were always full and the waitress checked in a lot. There are so many delicious dishes to try but our favorites were the harissa barbecue duck, the manti, the Brussels, the hummus, and the pumpkin fritters. We also loved the baklava dessert.

Despite the 3 of us being walk ins on a busy night we were seated at the bar reasonably quickly by the adept staff. The food is extraordinary with tapas style portions allowing many wonderful taste experiences. On this busy night the place was loud but fun. A spot that deserves its 5 star reviews. !!!
Weird spice added to most everything!
This place gets great reviews why not sure. We tried and most of the dishes we tried had some weird spice added so that they mostly all tasted the same and we did not enjoy it. A few dishes we ok but overall will not be back. They also add some kitchen staff fee. Here is a tip. Pay your own staff the right way and not strong arm your customers to do so!
Excellent service w a knowledgeable server for wines.
The food was uniformly delicious and inventive. Honestly we had so many dishes from duck kabob to cabbage Caesar salad to crunchy tuna tartare one better than the next. Fun atmosphere w easy parking. We'll be back!
Do not miss out.
Sarma surpassed our friend’s already high recommendation. The food was remarkable, bold, creative, and absolutely delicious.

Lamb kofte sliders and steak gyro were the stars of the show. Food and waitstaff weee absolutely incredible, knowledgeable, and friendly. 10/10 would go back!
A great place for an anniversary or an occasion, but
A great place for an anniversary or an occasion, but definitely not a place to frequent. The quality of food is great and the vibe is spectacular, but it's really easy to spend $150+ for two people and still leave hungry.
The best meal I've had in years.
Can't recommend highly enough. It can be hard to get a reservation but it's worth it - they also apparently take walk ins at the bar.
This review is for the Sarma x The Grateful Bagel breakfast
This review is for the Sarma x The Grateful Bagel breakfast collaboration on 2024/03/02. The overall experience was a 3/5 for me, but since this was a one-time event, I am keeping the 5/5 rating for the dine-in experience. Pre-orders were supposed to go live at midnight, but Sarma had an issue with Toast that resulted in people not being able to place their orders until 12:15 AM. Once ordering was available, everything sold out within a minute. This resulted in a lot of tired, angry people. Luckily, I was constantly refreshing the page and was able to place my order. Although technical difficulties are expected: 1. Sarma should have posted a status immediately to let people know that they were working with Toast to resolve the issue. A message was eventually posted but after 10 minutes of radio silence. 2. The link should have been shared (with ordering disabled) beforehand so that people could read the description for each item (only the menu item names had been shared) and to prevent all of the questions asking for the link. Now for the food: - Biscuit Spanikopita ($12): This was my favorite of the things I ordered. The spinach and feta filling was creamy and savory but very thick, so I could only eat half. The biscuit was buttery and held up well. - Egg and Cheese Brik ($10): Didn't like this. The outermost layer was flaky and flavorful, but the rest of the pastry had a tough, stale texture. The egg was runny but nothing special. I liked the hummus that was provided. - Sesame Fried Chicken & Grits ($18): Tbh, I ordered this because I read that it came with black sea cornbread, which is my favorite from Sarma's dinner menu. Sadly, it was only a small piece of cornbread but still tasted as good as I remembered. The fried chicken is also from the dinner menu and was also still good. I've never had grits before, but they added texture more so than flavor. I didn't like the bacon bits. The gravy that was provided tasted ok, but I preferred eating the chicken on its own. - Chicken Shawarma ($15): I didn't like the bagel because it was way too tough, but the chicken was juicy, and I liked the spicy tahini cream cheese. Overall, the breakfast food was just as expensive as the dinner items but half as good, so I'm disappointed. Maybe the food would have tasted better fresh, but this was a take-out only event, so the menu should have taken into consideration items that would be suitable for that. I probably wouldn't do Sarma Breakfast again, but I'll definitely be back for dinner sometime.
Not impressed with the food or the noisy atmosphere, tables
Not impressed with the food or the noisy atmosphere, tables cramped next to each other~ over spicing the food does not allow to taste the protein or vegetables in the dish. Menu selection was overwhelming 50 items to choose from ~ server was helpful ~ Friday, 6:30pm reservation ~ $250. tab for 4 pp ~ no plans to return. Lots of hype

One of the best restaurants in Boston! Loved their fried chicken dish and their Black Sea cornbread is a must! So savory and sweet Usually hard to find a good reservation time so both of the times I've been I've walked in right at 5 to be seated at the bar with no wait! Should probably get there a little before 5 if you really want to secure the seating though! Ambiance of the bar was great the service was amazing and they had good beers to pair with the food! Amazing stuff overall
We have moved closer and have since come to Sarma probably
We have moved closer and have since come to Sarma probably over six times in the last year or so. It still is one of the best restaurants in New England period, let alone Boston or Somerville. The ambiance is casual, modern, and Mediterranean vibes. The most recent menu items we enjoyed, though the menu rotates often, were the scallops in tamarind sauce, the yam kipur, lamb crunch rolls, and Turkish calamari. My husband and I always finish with the mint tea which has proven time and time again to be the way to do it. I would recommend probably 4-5 dishes for 2 people. The bread options don't generally come with the dips or shmears, so don't order those assuming that. Service has always been really good, but in our experience it has been better at the bar than the tables. We often get in without a reservation by waiting outside the restaurant in line before it opens, but for a larger party make a reservation!
Sarma was a wonderful experience.
The waitstaff is knowledgeable, timely and kind. There is a beautiful atmosphere and it is very elegant. The food was quick and delicious! Our waiter let us know to order about 4-6 plates for two people. We got 5 plates and it was the perfect amount of food. We ordered the scallops, pork belly biscuits, tuna tartar, steak gyros, and the fried chicken. The fried chicken was incredible! And the steak melted in my mouth. The only item I wasn't as impressed with was the pork belly. It was a little dry and bland compared to the incredible taste of everything else. All in all would highly recommend!
I was so excited to go here, but was very disappointed.
The food was very over spiced and it seemed like the spices were the same in several dishes. It was really not edible. The drink menu was good, wine was good, service was OK and ambience was fine but nothing remarkable. Way overpriced, and would never go back. I can do better at home.
Once you find a place to park your car, you're in for a treat
With a reservation (which they recommend, until 10:30 pm), we dropped in and got a table. We ordered the octopus al pastor, a dish with rice noodles, a fennel salad, brussels sprouts (hot), a total of 6 things for 3 of us. The cold items appeared first at the table, followed by the warm dishes, the protein options. We'd go back now that we know the menu better and could make a reservation to be certain of getting a table. At 8:30 pm, they were full, and when we left at 10 pm, new customers were arriving. It's pricey, but the Turkish-Greek-Moroccan combo is a great combination of different things.
Mediocre at its best
Overhyped, okay food with less than mediocre service. Unprofessional host but pleasant server. Don’t waste your hard earned money here!
Beyond words…a must experience!
yes, the food is creative, unique and delicious. like, insanely delicious. yes, the atmosphere is relaxed, cool and subtly hip. like, perfectly mixed. and… the people that work there…are creative, kind and superb on all levels. they make an amazing experience…joyful and elevated and memorable. thank you to sarma for a deliciously delightful experience and a delightfully delicious eating experience.
You will not be disappointed
Arrived 15 mins prior to opening and there was already a line up - which ended up around the block, in the rain. If this doesn’t tell you how good this place is, nothing will. Got 2 seats at the bar and were immediately greeted by Doug, the friendliest bartender. Highly recommend trying the Second Place cocktail, it was 10/10! Ordered a selection of small plates from the menu and every single one was to die for. They offered a fried sesame chicken special (off menu) which was juicy and crispy and perfect. If they bring this around do not hesitate to grab one, you won’t be sorry. Also recommend the avocado/burrata, lamb kofte sliders, venison wrapped dates and the brussel sprouts. Will absolutely go back next time I’m in the area as a walk-in so I can sick to the amazing bar.
Worth the wait
So good, every part of it! Loved the food, service and atmosphere. Parking wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.
One of the greatest tasting complete dinner ever. Definitely worth the hype.
Sarma Trip Advisor review Unfortunately it has been about six or eight years since we have come here. We live in Los Angeles otherwise we would try to come every week. We have had difficulty like every -one getting a reservation. There were six of us, four adults and two children, six and nine year olds. All foodies. We started with the special of the evening, a chicken yogurt dish. It was full of flavor. Everything was served family style. Our 9 year old grandson is a strict vegetarian. He did not share our dishes and we did not share his. He loved all that he ordered and ate. We had the gyro bread, served in a paper bag. It was very good. The Black Sea cornbread with feta, honey and sesame is mindbogglingly good. I normally do not like cornbread. This was AMAZING! The baked brie Spanikopita strawberry spoon sweets were a nice refreshing combination. We had the feta gnocchi, with tiny pork meatballs, tomato, orange and oregano was a very tasty dish. The spicy lobster fideos chorizo, saffron, in brown butter aoli. I don’t know how they come up with such wonderful combinations of flavors. The scallop, creamed corn, basturma, broccolini in a melon sauce was great. I would have liked more corn. The soft shell crab on corn pancakes, kohlrabi, curry remoulade had wonderful flavor and sensational soft shell crab. We had the sugar snap peas with pistachio tahini, radishes, ginger and crispy quinoa. It was a fabulous dish. The baby artichokes had garlicky pea greens, tomato, potato, and mint were delicious. We had cauliflower katayif consisting of green harissa-buttermilk ranch, yuzu. Again how do they come up with these combinations. We then had the sweet potato schnitzel with carrot, avocado, ginger and grapefruit. What an evening! Our waiter was Reid who was fantastic. He was so attentive, so educational and helpful. He advised on the wine selection which turned out great. The food and service and environment are all superb! Each dish had its own entity and none of the ingredients fought with each other. They were in perfect harmony. I cannot speak highly enough about the whole experience. I only wish we lived closer or they moved to Los Angeles.

It depends how far out in the future your reservation is. If you posted a reservation hat was 2 months out, it’s unlikely many people will view your reservation. It could also be that your reservation is just not desirable.
