I was here Friday evening with a friend who spoke about coming here with clients and the food was so good, he'll have dreams about it. I was skeptical, but definitely dream worthy. Hidden away in the basement of a random building on a random street, Sagakura is definitely a hidden gem in the city. The food will taunt your taste buds with wanting more. The service will have you feeling cradled and taken care of. I can't say enough good things. Looking forward to going back.
Be the first to ReplyService 4.
5/5Food 4/5Atmosphere 3/5Price 3.8/5Service was great, we thought they would have had omakase though prior to arriving. One of the manager offered to do the omakase for us as costumed however we decided to try a la carte.OMG - How can this Uni be so amazing. So sweet and fresh.Unagi - not a big fan but my boyfriend said they were greatWagyu - was great as well. Thought giving a try would be recommended. Toro was quite fishy to me. Was not satisfied but please feel free to try as maybe we've gone on a day when the fish was not the most fresh. Tofu is tofu can't go wrong, but their anchovies are quite a lot. It would be nice to have a bit less as the saltiness overcomes the entire tofu flavors.Udon was very nice to end the meal as we both loved the citrus and yuzu flavored broth!Atmosphere- I don't expect this to happen as it's personal and could be different daily. However, please be more considerate of others especially at the bar as some customers are just SO LOUD. Can I please have a meal and a normal conversation instead of able to hear how other's life is going? Very unmannered people at the restaurant. Something I would avoid as I love to pay for a place with a good atmosphere and the food.
Be the first to ReplyThe vibes here were so cool.
It was in the basement and it felt like we were in a different world. The food was so unique and we tried so many new things. The servers were attentive and so kind, spacing out our dishes well so we didn't get too full too fast. Great spot!

Sakagura is amazing thanks to Yuval, their Israeli chef, who marries flavors and textures in the most unexpected and amazing ways. Think of gazing at a treasured jewel and then place it upon a fragrant nest, ready to enjoy. Yuval creates edible treasures. Memorable is an understatement.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent service yet again.
ONLY issue was they quoted $117 for the sake, then when they brought it, said it was $144. They should have honored the $117 price, or not brought it at all and asked if we would still want it at $144.Otherwise:- Eel is insanely large portioned and delicious- wings were packing a punch with the sesame- cold soba noodle is great, if you like cold- extremely fresh fish/uni in generalWill come again. Just be careful of the pricing!

Although located in the basement of a midtown office building, Sakagura does not have a dank crypt-like vibe. Their high ceilings, light colored walls and airy decor help to dispel any such dark feelings.I read that Sakagura recently started to offer lunch service, so I decided to stop in and sample their offerings. We sat at the spacious counter which I always prefer if available. Sakagura's teishoku lunch sets are a veritable bargain for these parts, including homemade pickles, an excellent cup of white miso soup, chawan mushi egg custard redolent with veggies and shellfish and hot green tea included. I decided to splurge on the chutoro-ikura-uni don and was very glad I did. They didn't skimp on the sashimi and the rice was perfectly prepared. The toro was melt-in-your-mouth goodness, the bright orange ikura popped with fresh saline taste, and the uni was creamy yum.Sakagura is famous for their broad array of sake offerings, so it was hard to zero in on one. Ended up sharing a small bottle of their Dewazaura Daiginjo sake; its nice fruity aroma and high alcohol content hit the spot after a long week. Mochi dessert was tasty although a small portion with kinda rubbery consistency. Didn't stop us from scarfing it down though:)Service by Miki was very friendly and prompt. Reservations are recommended as the place fills up quickly. Look forward to making my descent into their cozy subterranean lair again to try dinner service.
Be the first to ReplyOverall, a very underwhelming experience.
The food was a huge letdown. Our mackerel was over cooked. Service was decent- maybe they should have given us larger sake cups if they couldn't come around to continue pouring from our bottle. Two stars for the ambiance, but not for anything else. Save your money and look elsewhere for a better Japanese spot. If it weren't so expensive, maybe I'd give it an extra star. Meh.
Be the first to ReplyAs a speakeasy sake bar, this place is fantastic.
This is not a place where you go for sushi and expect Omakase or sushi entrees. It is more like Izakaya style food. The star of the show is their sake menu. I am a huge fan of nigori sakes. It is the first time I had a junmai daiginjo nigori sake. It wasn't as sweet or milky as your typical nigori. I'd opt next time for either a straight up dry junmai daiginjo or a straight up nigori. I'm a huge fan of the Kamoizumi Summer Snow nigori. I'm happy with any Japan-made dry junmai daiginjo. I'd suggest getting sake flights and try as many as you can stomach - make sure you have a safe ride home....The menu felt like a big list of Japanese tapas and I left hungry, even after spending more on dinner for two than I would spend for five at a nice place. We had the sashimi platter for two (15 pieces) which had tuna (not toro), rainbow mackerel, sea breem, fluke, and yellowtail. We had an uni with clementine crudo served on an oyster shell that had some other sweet syrup in it that we couldn't pinpoint. It felt like a shooter. The uni was cold and tough, not the way I like my uni. We had an Ikura hummus which had some other green ingredient we couldn't pinpoint. It was tasty and the crackers used with it were tasteless, which is actually good so you focus on the hummus and Ikura. We also had a scallop, prickly pear vinaigrette, and green chili (jalapeño) crudo which came with three pieces. It was good, but not a "wow." Miso soup was standard fare and served authentically without a spoon. Service was very good and the waiter knew the sake choices well. There was a manager checking in on tables, which is a great practice for any restaurant. If he wasn't the manager, that was creepy, but I think he was, indeed, the manager. He didn't introduce himself. I would definitely go back, but not for a meal, more for an after-dinner sake flight. Remember to tip well.
Be the first to ReplyOnly worthy dish here is the grilled eel on rice.
But not bad for a night out pub atmosphere

Wow... this place should not be voted so highly. The food is ok, but it's not something you can't get at any other Japanese spot. The portions are TINY and the prices are ridiculous. Service is average. Felt a little ignored.
Be the first to ReplyFood quality is excellent just like before the pandemic.
Everything we had was excellent. Does feel more expensive than it used to be before the pandemic. The restaurant hasn't lost its DNA though, which makes me happy.

I remember coming here many years ago and being impressed but Japanese food has come so far and is so ubiquitous in NYC now that you need to do more to stand out. The food at Sakagura ranged from decent to really good but the service seemed chaotic and like many restaurants these days they were likely understaffed. Some of the food also was a bit haphazardly presented. I think it's a fun experience but maybe just visit for sake and a snack or two but eat dinner somewhere else.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is a basement gem.
It has a serious Kyoto old Japanese feel while being a really rad sake bar right near grand central. The food is phenomenal. Every single dish is curated and stunning both aesthetically as well as on the palate. The food is Japanese but it changes based on availability. All the staff is educated on sake and the pairing of the meal accordingly. The bathrooms are SO cool with fully automatic toto toilets within a giant sake cask. Please don't come here. I would like it to stay a secret.

TIP: Location is a bit hard to find as it's in the basement of an office building--keep your eyes peeled for an unassuming menu stand outside said office building, as I completely walked by it while looking for this place.Cozy yet upscale izakaya that's perfect for a light dinner with friends after work. It's definitely expensive and the portions are tiny but I thought it was well worth it considering the quality of everything we ate and the excellent service. Four of us shared 7 dishes + a free red bean birthday ice cream and our combined total post tax and tip came out to $157.From favorite to least favorite (but still good!):Age dashi tofu ($12) - A must get IMO. The flash fried tofu creates a nice contrast between the crispy exterior but soft inside, and pairs so well with the strong umami from the dashi broth and mushroom.Saba Shioyaki ($13) - This grilled mackerel dish came at a very close second. The fish was cooked just the right amount--lot of times it can be too dry but that wasn't the case here. Great textureUni Soba ($38) - I've never had uni and soba combined, and it was quite a good pair! There wasn't too much uni but it was clearly very fresh and not at all bitter.Kanikama Salad ($9) - Wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did, but it was great! There was a good balance between the imitation crab and cucumber. Not bad and we appreciated the relative affordability compared to the other dishes.(The following items are ones I probably wouldn't get again:)Hot Inaniwa Udon ($18) - I was expecting thicker noodles but the udon noodles were quite thin. I also didn't taste much yuzu flavor.Karaage ($17) - Appreciated that the chicken wasn't dry, but it was a little salty and nothing really stood out considering the elevated price point for 4 pcs.Tori Tsukune ($16) - These chicken meatballs also didn't really stand out and felt expensive for 4pcs.

An amazing izakaya spot that feels somewhat like a speakeasy. The restaurant is hidden within an office building and there's really no reception once you get in but once you're in...it feels like you've teleported yourself to Japan. Every dish was so good but the most amazing menu was a dish that's typical off-menu. Every day the restaurant will have 1-4 fresh tuna bones that gets served as a new DIY sushi dish. The dish comes with an enormous bone of tuna, fresh scallions (I think seasoned with some type of vinaigrette), nori seaweed, some sesame dipping sauce, wasabi, and special salt. You scoop the tuna flesh yourself from the bone and make your own tuna sushi bites!
Be the first to ReplyThey changed the menu a lot, super disappointing.
The portion of each dish is so small and the food is nothing special. Overpriced!!! Overpriced!!! Overpriced!!! Sadly I will never go back ... I used to like this place a lot.

Super cool place in the basement of an otherwise spare and bleak bank building. If you get to this place and start to wonder if you've made the right choice, just keep going. Soon you'll be in a cool japanese restaurant with great dishes and a strong saki selection.

3.75 stars. A "speak easy" restaurant under an office building. Food was good quality but very small portion size and on the more expensive side. I was not full after the meal but everything was flavorful and enjoyable. The Mediterranean cod was a bit fishy. I liked the eel, shrimp and uni soba the best but none were particularly special imo. 3.5 seems slightly low for the good quality but I don't think it deserves a full 4. Good date spot and seems very Japanese.

The ambiance of the place was great, the servers were helpful and nice. The front of the house staff was excellent. I don't usually like to write bad reviews however, I just felt like it should not take 3 hours for all the food to be out.. Went for the Valentine's Day menu. Each course took about 20 mins to 40 mins which was frustrating. Especially on dishes that should not take more than 5 mins let alone 40 mins for the Maguro (raw tuna). Got seated at 630pm, didn't leave the place till 10pm Food was okay. What stood out to me was the short rib and the dessert! Those were definitely delicious!
Be the first to ReplyUsed to be my favorite sake spot.
Actually, still is my favorite sake place. They used to have two locations but one closed. Doesn't matter since this original was always better. It's hard to find good izakayas in NY. This comes close to a decent one. Go for a casual night out with a few good sakes.
Be the first to ReplyDecent spot with good food BUT not worth price.
.. at least in my opinion. Every dish in a one-biter minus the Una Don. If you dont mind paying good money for food, this place is worth it. The Miso Cod was super good. I would literally come again only for that
Be the first to ReplyYummy hidden gem! The food is definitely 5 stars.
The quality of the food is truly unmatched. My favourite was the stone grilled A5 Wagyu, Uni Soba and Pan Seared Scallops. We also got the Grilled Octopus, Chilled Tofu, Yuzu Udon, Una Don, Chutoro Sushi, and 2 Carafe of premium Sake. The only thing I wish it was slightly more filling for each dish. I agree with their high price point because the quality is so good but wishing they increased the portion just the tiniest bit and being *slightly* more generous. We spent close to $400 overall.I'll definitely be back, but if you don't want such a high bill to creep up on you, I suggest eating just a bit before coming here. We didn't eat and so we ordered with our stomachs haha!!This is definitely more of a restaurant to enjoy the taste of food, not to get full, if that makes sense!

My friend took me to this spot and OMG! While it was difficult to find(look for the building number and head inside and downstairs passed the lobby attendant) it was worth the effort! By far the best dinning experience to have happen to my taste buds! We started off with Edamame and some of the other starters then moved to the Mediterranean menu and then it happened ....THE UNI!!!! If I could have anything for the rest of my life it would be the UNI every single day! I am also not a fish person and I avoid it at all cost but the cod is also something you need to experience in your life. Our waiter was also very lovely and recommended which Saki we should get with our dishes. Would come here again & again!!!!
Be the first to ReplyThe service and the food are just on another level.
I'll be craving this restaurant I already know.
