Saint Francis Provisions Kinsale Reviews from The Last Year
Disappointed
We had dinner in St francis provisions recently,we said we would go there because the reviews were good, good ideas with the food but it was not perfectly executed,it was a disappointing night as we were so looking forward to it.
Amazing Food Experience
Absolutely top class everything, from Zoe on arrival settling us with vermouth (loved the glasses it was served in), to everyone involved in this amazing, tiny restaurant. The chef (a Madrid woman) who honoured us by serving us our deserts at the table is simply amazing, ( which gave us a chance to thank and praise her for her outstanding talents) with the combination of cooking techniques and flavours. I wont go through course by course, but I will highlight the perfectly cooked “Dublin Bay Prawns” in the shell with a delicate dressing. These were local caught out of Union Hall. No imported “tiger” prawns from Vietnam that is standard fare now in Ireland. We had a recommended light Garnacha from Madrid, in honour of the chef, and it matched perfectly with both seafood and steak for our party of four. I know you may be suspicious I must be connected with this business as I am being so effusive. I can assure you I have no connection, other than I will be returning. Thanks to everyone involved for a wonderful night of wonderful food, wine, hospitality and fun.
Original
For those who can't stand burgers and fish & chips in Ireland, a place with original culinary offerings and interesting combinations. Very friendly service. Two drawbacks: slow service (but they are looking for staff) and slightly small portions.
A “must do” in Kinsale
St. Francis Provisions is an outstanding restaurant. The staff were very attentive and helpful. The restaurant itself is very small, but that adds to the charm of the experience. Every dish we had was absolutely amazing and the proportions were perfect. They serve as the dish is prepared, so if you want the dishes of everyone in your party to come out at the same time you’ll go someplace else (at your loss). It clear after talking to one of the owners that her heart is completely in the restaurant and the food it serves. This place is definitely a “must do” when visiting Kinsale or the Kinsale area.
We were most impressed
A remarkable meal of plates to share. Menu is very adventurous when compared to other Kinsale restaurants. Very talented chefs that must be commended. Cosy atmosphere with interesting wines. Everything at a modest price.
Tiny restaurant with a big personality, and great food.
Eating here is an experience. Intimate, friendly, inventive, exciting and delicious. My husband and I sat at the bar/counter and enjoyed engaging the servers and kitchen staff, as well as the owner and chefs. The dishes are unique, flavorful and satisfying. And of course, the food is delectable.
Doesn't get better than this!
My old friend and I went out for a night on the town in Kinsale and were blown away by the style and substance of SFP. Barbara and Emily in top form, as was the chef. The burrata was sensational - a must have. (Gremola, roast pumpkin and beetroot cooked to perfection), the mackerel was v good and the quail its usual stunning self, but the best was the chocolate fondant with boozy prunes! All washed down with a superb slam dunk unusual red! Sensational! SFP is incredibly special. Small team intimate setting just being the best it can be! Just a total blast! Bib Gourmand well deserved!
Amazing evening!
What an amazing evening at saint Francis provisions! starting with perfectly marinated olives and culminating with fabulous whole black sole but in between we were treated to one more perfect dish after another! The shallot tart tatin the roasted peppers with labneh and who knew aubergine could taste this good I could go on and on! The staff the music the venue the ambience the wine list this place has it all. Barbara and her staff made us feel so welcome. I absolutely love this restaurant and am already planning when I can return!
You too will learn to love broccoli!
What a burst of vitality St. Francis has been to this jaded palate. In a town noted for its gastronomy St Francis stands out heads and shoulders above the pack. I took She Who Must Be Obeyed here last night for her birthday and we were both blown away by the diversity of the menu, the quality of the cooking and the knowledge of the staff. We had focaccia bread so soft it was like eating a cloud. This was followed by the little anchovy & olive spears, broccoli like I have never tasted before - chargrilled and served with a lemon & garlic sauce and drizzled with a piquant Italian cheese. To follow we chose the smoked potatoes in Aioli (stunning), accompanied by ox tongue so tender it was like slicing into blancmange. This was served on a bed of marinaded beetroot and spears of tarragon. The tongue melted like the finest foie gras and had retained all of its intense flavour. Next came the bavette, served with the classic French green leek sauce in a rich jus. This was exquisite and was devoid of any of the usual toughness of this cut. The taste was exquisite. All this was polished off with a serving of the spiced apple bread & butter pudding. If the focaccia was like eating a cloud, this was probably what it felt like when an angel cries on your tongue. Like the rest of the meal there wasn't a hint of stodge anywhere in this dish. It did, however, offer a nice variety of textures to tease the palate with several delicate spice hints shining through a delightfully crispy crust. Bravo! St Francis. I can't wait to go back.
unpretentious deliciousness.....
I have been meaning to write a glowing review, for which this Kinsale gem thoroughly deserves. For a small restaurant, Saint Francis Provisions is a very efficient use of space, with the option to dine al fresco on mild, dry, evenings. Three of us were seated at bar counter which gave height, light and a glimpse of the showmanship in front of us. And as a curtain-raiser we were recommended a Spanish rosé that was poured from a height to encourage its natural effervescent characteristic. And when it came to our delicious array of dishes, the team were as deft as David Copperfield conjuring up our plates in such a small kitchen. Between us we shared Grilled Gort Na Nain Asparagus, Macroom Ricotta, brown butter / Grilled purple sprouting broccoli, tonnato + Cais na tire / Burrata, charred baby leeks + Romesco, hazelnuts / Caherbeg Bavette, Charred Leek Salsa Verde. There was so much delicious mopping up to do, we ordered more slices of the fabulous homemade Focaccia. And the final act did not disappoint either, drawing our memorable meal to a close with the Pistachio Baklava accompanied by a double espresso from Red Strand coffee. Delectable. The team were warm, welcoming and knowledgeable and overall, we all agreed that Saint Francis Provisions offers great value for money. Highly recommend.
The best meal I have had in years. I could not recommend this gem enough!
If I could give 10 stars I would. Fantastic food experience in every way. When a kitchen can take the humble potato and turn it into the smoked delight I had last night you know you are on to a winner. Simply stunning food! We had the tomato tonnato bread, burrata and nectarine with pistachio dukkah, smoked potatoes and quail with a cheeky pistachio baklava for dessert. Even the coffee was excellent! The tomato tonnato is like a brushetta on steroids, with that fantastic liquid gold tonnato sauce, an almost meaty umami taste. The burrata creaminess perfect with the delicious grilled nectrines and given a lift by the slighty spiced pistachio dukkah. The quail was literally finger licking good and the smoked potatoes ..the best and I really mean this.. the best potatoes I have ever had. The staff are lovely and knowledgeable, the wine pairings looked fantastic although we didn't partake. Lovely vibe and such quick service for such a Toby kitchen. I cant wait to eat here again!
Disappointing
Excellent service and nice ambience but the food was only so-so. Because the two mains on offer weren't very inspiring, we had 4 different small plates for sharing (3 would certainly have been enough), all of which very similar because of the sauces served with them. The focaccia, which was a separate order for €6, was very good. We ordered burrata with grilled nectarines (the best dish), potatoes with extremely garlicky lemon aioli (potatoes tasted like bacon fat and were very dry and hard to eat - I think the variety is more suitable for boiling), aubergines with labneh and honey (which we found a little disgusting) and tomatoes on bread with a tonnato sauce (the tomatoes were good but the sauce was very disappointing). The food didn't sit well in our stomachs and we suffered from indigestion afterwards. The wine was pleasant and the staff were friendly and attentive without exception. On the whole, a disappointing experience however.
An exceptional local restaurant.
This is a really unusual, exceptional restaurant - don't go if you want a conventional meal or burger and chips or are in a hurry, but if you want unusual combinations of flavours without all the condescension and pretension that so often comes with them then don't miss it. We thought the food excellent, imaginative, very fresh and beautifully prepared. In addition the service and vibe made for not only a delicious meal, but a lovely evening out. Thank you to everyone involved.
