Family dinner
Lovely restaurant, great menu and catered to gluten free as well. Ambience makes this restaurant and staff helpful and friendly . Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyTrading on an old reputation. Nothing more
For a few years I really wanted to visit rules , I had heard stories of how amazing it was in the past , from a few friends . I promised myself next time I was in London on a theatre trip, we would dine there … I should say that we are farmers , we understand the importance of good produce and we like old traditions. Our first moments there were pure delight at the standard of cocktails, Brian is simply amazing and the two gents that described each drink in the conservatory , both were excellent and well informed, polite , friendly.. the drinks were amazing, we have a love of cocktails and experience from all around the globe of many cocktail nights.. these were as good as raffles in Singapore, absolutely delicious. We were ushered downstairs as our table was ready, and unfortunately we were put on a tiny table next to the cloakroom, however that was unimportant, we were there for the food. I had fish soup and my wife asked for 6 oysters, but could they be grilled please, this was met with distain , and they did agree but they came out with zero seasoning, and lukewarm warm .. DANGEROUS. I had steak kidney pudding.. chewy meat , no seasoning (cook your filling for longer and slower) Etc etc. The worst bit , they don’t even reply to reviews on here , or by email … total arrogance. Don’t ignore your customers!!! Rules will soon be a distant memory, like so many others that were too arrogant to accept mistakes.
Be the first to ReplyDon’t go as a party of 3
Don’t book as a 3 or you might get the worse table in the rooms, with the view of the coat rack and workers door . This negates ambience and ruins the experience. Booking 2, 4 or more gets you in the room
Be the first to ReplyWonderful atmosphere in London's oldest restaurant
Rules is more than just a good restaurant, as the oldest in London established 1798 it is a veritable dining experience. So much atmosphere with such warm and civilised service, it has been my pleasure to have enjoyed this wonderful establishment for more than 60 years. How many offer a proper Black Velvet in silver tankards? I was able to visit twice this month, the first time rather quickly for the iconic steak and kidney pudding made with beef suet – as my late Mother used to make in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire just after the war. What a rich and satisfying dish it is especially when served with extra gravy in fine silver boats. The next visit was for longer so in addition to my regular Black Velvet (made just as M.Pelleprat recommended), I chose the cauliflower soup with mussels and a slight curry flavour £9.95 which was voluptuously creamy – but the accompanying sourdough was cold and tough. The steak and kidney pie with a puff pastry crust was superb and so nice to have the silver boat of extra gravy alongside de rigeur. Thrice cooked chips crunchy and the Swiss chard with bacon breadcrumbs (both sides £5.50) good accompaniments. No wine as my guest was driving and no desserts as we had satiated our hunger. The corner table requested was offered and so our lunch was virtually perfect for the sum of £164.76 including 12.5% service. Much recommended especially for overseas visitors wanting to indulge in traditional British fare
Be the first to ReplyA trip down memory lane, but we'll leave it in the past now.
I haven't been to Rules for about 30 years so thought it would be fun to take some friends to see if it had changed. The decor is still the same - like stepping back into another century which is of course part of the experience, although the welcome was somewhat perfunctory and we were reminded when the table was required back, rather than hoping we might have a good time. The rest of the meal was a mixed bag. Our waitress brought out the wrong wine, although this was an understandable mistake - '21 vintage requested, wine number 21 on the list appeared but was replaced quickly with the correct one. I had the steak and kidney pudding which was superb, but the 2 diners who had the lamb on cassoulet beans were rather disappointed. It is a strange combination and the lamb was fatty and rather tough. As they were being treated, and in their 20's, they were polite enough not to say anything but I could see they were not really enjoying it. My other friend had the salmon, which was perfectly good. The waitress seemed to be on commission to push more wine onto us, and seemed slightly put out when we declined (more than once). If we wanted more we would have asked for it and it became rather annoying. When the bill arrived it still had the bottle which was wrongly produced listed, which was pretty poor, although the gentleman who dealt with it did so charmingly and quickly. We won't be back, but can say we have tried it again, but sadly found it wanting. It could have turned into a pure tourist destination, and I'm pleased to see it hasn't, but it's not good enough to attract me back again.
Be the first to ReplyA Trip Back In Time
My I's are dotted, my T's are crossed and my boxes are ticked. Rules fulfills every dining experience one could hope to combine in one venue. As you enter, it's like a portal back in time, the swish of waiters gliding effortlessly between oak cabinets and antique ornaments, the hubbub of people indulging in culinary scrummyness, the like of which it is now rare to find. We had reserved a table and arrived a tad early, wishing to sample the delights of Rules upstairs cocktail bar, and the Maitre D' sorted us out with style, we where instantly transported back into a "Raffles Club" style atmosphere, surrounded by Palms and Rubber Plants, with glass skylights and elegant lighting. The Cocktail Waiter brought over a drinks menu and we perused it, each finding a tipple to suit. I went "Full James Bond" with a Vodka Martini, the ladies went for something more fruity. Service was prompt and polite and we where able to relax whilst waiting for our table downstairs. I even managed to fit in a "Gin and That" before we made our way down to the dining room. Again, service was impeccable, we perused the menu, which was a trip back to good old English Cooking, with a selection of traditional dishes served with a selection of accompanying veggies. I had the Steak and Kidney Suet Pudding, both the ladies the Chicken and Leek Pie. Creamed Celeriac, Buttered Cabbage, Creamy Mash and Dauphinoise Potatoes to accompany. My Suet Pud was a work of art and I chuckled as I remembered my former Royal Navy Chef Daughter referring to Suet Puds as "Babies Heads". The suet outer was just right, soaking up the rich gravy and encasing the tender meat that just fell apart under the touch of a knife. The ladies where both looking shell shocked at the size of the pie, upon inspection, I realised that they failed my "Pie Test" as I am a bit pedantic with Pie, and always ask....Has your Pie got a floor and walls, or mereley a Roof? These where "Roof" only, but I think if they had the full pastry works, the ladies would have been defeated. I was musing as to how the Chef had managed to fit what appeared to be an entire chicken and a wonderful gravy inside his pie, but luckily I got to sample some as my good lady was defeated. If I thought the Steak and Kidney was delightful, the Chicken Pie was equally top notch. After demolishing the mains, we where given enough time for the dust to settle before the Pudding Menu arrived. Again, not a massive choice, but something for all tastes. My wife went for the Sponge Pudding and Custard, her sister the Baked Alaska and I went for the Cheese Selection. With a top notch glass of Port to accompany. Again, not to long to wait, Puds arrived and looked divine, my Cheese and Crackers arrived and unlike other establishments where they scrimp on the crackers, there was a nice selection of cheese and a great choice and quantity of mixed crackers. All in all, a wonderful experience, with service you don't see anymore. Staff who where enthusiastic and proud of what they where doing. Polite and with a nice touch of humour and certainly not stuffy or snobby. We where just ordinary folk, but it was a pleasure to visit Rules, wear a bow tie and a jacket, whilst having a trip back in a "Culinary Tardis" to great dishes of yesterday, well prepared and served with love. Well done Rules.

Rules is a quintessential British institution and does deliver. We had potted shrimps, steak and kidney pudding, pork noisettes and more braised meats, followed by desserts. One in our party ordered vegetarian options and seemed content. Your three-hour slot will fly by but try to ask for a table towards the back of the restaurant which is far cosier and attractive than the front. Only downside: the bill! A bit of a shocker compared to other meals but then again, there’s only one Rules!
Be the first to ReplyLittle gem restaurant.
My husband and myself had been to Rules 20 years ago for a friend's birthday. We were let down on another restaurant so we decided to have a look at Rules. We got booked in for the next night with our son and partner. We all had the beef and yorkshires. It was absolutely amazing. The puddings were delicious. The waiters were very attentive but not pushy. Some would say overpriced but this is London and the oldest restaurant in London. I would definitely recommend 👌
Be the first to ReplyRules Restaurant - don't go there .
We have been coming to Rules for 25 yrs but never again . We arrived tired & flustered after walking from Westminster Abbey ( traffic standstill with striking teachers' march on the same day as a Tube strike ) . We asked to visit the bar for a well-earned pick -me -up ; our guests were already there .Two minutes after our drinks had been served ( without menus as in the past ) we were advised our table was ready and to follow downstairs . We refused ! The potted shrimp had more pot than shrimp . We were served steak & kidney pudding instead of the pie we had ordered . The kidneys were tough . £48 for a bottle of basic white Bergerac is just greedy ! And all for £352 for four guests . The menu has moved away from the traditional English food that was the whole point of Rules . Who wants pink grapefruit & avocado with a crab salad ??? Goodbye Rules !

It’s a beautiful restaurant, walked past it many times and am glad to have finally paid a visit. Good hearty food and good wine. Only complaint would be the constant attempts by the waiter to upsell. The place isn’t cheap and it would’ve been nice to just get what was ordered without lots of suggestions for additional extras.
Be the first to ReplyHusband surprised me after the theatre.
Welcome Ming professional. Service pleasant and attentive and food very good quality. Waitresses very lovely and professional.
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience in a lovely atmosphere
Beautiful restaurant. Lovely and friendly staff who were attentive. The only criticism is there was no disabled toilet
Be the first to ReplyUsed to be nice, now just greedy
Used to like Rules as treat. But they've become too complacent. It's not long ago this industry cried out for help in the pandemic and tax payers are still paying the bill. But Rules still hangs on its past reputation and don't seem to care about negative reviews. I've tried emailing some of our gripes but they arrogantly don't respond to criticism. It's the same on Trip Advisor. See how many times the management have responded to people with issues. They're getting greedy too. The cost of the rib of beef for two has shot up to just short of £100. And they've recently taken off the potatoes so you have to buy these as a separate dish. Prices up, quality down, standoffish to criticism. Then there's that thing where the minute you arrive they remind you they want their table back within xxx hours. Who wants to go to a high end expensive restaurant and rush just so they can squeeze more covers in? No thanks Rules. I've fallen our of love.

'Oh for a steak and kidney pudding now that Spring is (almost) here...' Not quite what the poet said, but Rules (Covent Garden) can be relied on to satisfy yearnings for traditional English cooking. London's oldest restaurant is consistently good in its welcome, service and cooking. My wife and I invited a French friend. He was enchanted. Gazing around he suddenly said ' Downton Abbey'. It seems two episodes were filmed here. And then there are the risqué stories of trysts with Edward Vll to add more colour to the scene. The S&K pudding was filled with chunky beef and large kidneys bathed in gravy and served with creamy mashed potato, as it should be. Our friend's chicken pie served in a crimped paper case was a delight. We drank Rules house cocktail (delicious) and Cotes du Rhone. Our waitress , who spoke French) was Friendly and helpful. We left repeat and happy and looking forward to our next visit.
Be the first to ReplyLifelong dream realised - British Classic Dining at its best
For British fine dining, decor and tradition - this is the best place in London. I loved every minute of my visit. Really good value as well. And the steak and kidney pudding was out of this world

First time at Rules and we werent disappointed, no fuss just great British food and great service The bar area upstairs was good and great cocktails - simple black velvet for us! Shame they dont offer steak pies without the kidney! Also great that they dont interrupt to ask if everything is ok!
Be the first to ReplyNot what I’d hoped for
I’d booked a table for 4 as a treat for my son - he’d been to Rules before and had loved it. The bar upstairs is lovely, most of the staff were attentive, and our table was good and intimate. HOWEVER, the food left a lot to be desired which is not great when it is so expensive! The bread served with the duck rillette was so dry I had trouble chewing it. The steak and kidney pudding contained dry and stringy meat, and bizarrely the side of broccoli was so hard I couldn’t cut through it with my knife. My husband’s chicken pie was not a pie, it was a casserole with a pastry lid. All in all the food was on par with a Wetherspoons. I didn’t want to make a fuss and ruin the evening for my son and his girlfriend, so did the terribly British thing of paying the £450 bill (!!!) thanking the staff, and leaving. Needless to say I won’t ever go back.
Be the first to ReplyDinner just like your mother would make.
Wonderful setting, good service but sadly what amounts to home cooking being served. Nothing was awful but nothing was exceptional either. Would I return? No sorry it just left me rather flat.

The food was sublime and generous. The team were really first rate, And we really enjoyed an excellent meal. We will be back. Robin
Be the first to ReplyA disgrace, disappointment and embarrassment to it's former namesake!
I was very embarrassed on my evening at this once former, wonderful establishment. I had booked a table of four to treat our American friends for a visit to the oldest restaurant in England that specialised in game when I last visited some 20 years ago. We had arrived early and were told that we could go upstairs to the bar for pre-dinner drink with our friends. No sooner had our friends arrived, 10 minutes early, we then then told that we HAD to go to our table and our friends were not permitted to order a drink at the bar! I was disappointed to see that the table arrangements had been drastically changed; no longer the intimate, compartmentalised tables but as many tables as possible rammed together to get the maximum number of patrons in as possible. The intimacy had gone and one could clearly hear the conversation on the next table which for a supposedly first class restaurant charging exorbitant prices, is unforgivable. The menu was equally disappointing. The menu no longer featured the once renowned game menu; gone was the jugged hare, goose, grouse, pheasant, turkey, salmon and trout to be replaced with insipid steak and kidney pie or pudding which incidentally, did NOT contain steak, but stringy brisket, which at £22.95 before adding vegetables, is a trice steep. Moreover, their so-called “chicken, leak and mushroom pie” was NOT A PIE AT ALL; it was chicken, leak and mushroom pie casserole served in a porcelain dish covered with a layer of commercially available, pre-made flaky pastry! I’ve had better in Wetherspoons for much less than the £22.95 that I was charged, again before adding vegetables. I also think £5.50 for half a mashed potato is a bit steep. All these issues, coupled with the waiters constantly looking at us to clear our table in a rush to get us out, was most unsettling and quite frankly, downright rude. We did not have a bottle of wine but 4 glasses of the house wines and a couple of cocktails and the bill came to an eye-watering £357.77! Suffice to say that Rules will not have to endure my patronage in the future and I warn potential patrons to avoid this establishment if they are expectant of the previously superb food and service of Rules; it has sadly disappeared.

Lunched in the Sir John Betjeman room. 8 of us including two children (12 & 10) for my son's 40th birthday Lovely room, decorated with fresh flowers. Personalised menus. First rate food and drinks, cocktails especially good. Staff excellent, attentive and very friendly. We have been going to Rules for over 30 years - still excellent, can definitely recommend.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect
It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a restaurant meal this much!! A perfect combination of extremely good food, highly professional service, a pleasant ambience and a bill that I felt happy to pay because it reflected a quality offering. It isn’t cheap but it’s Central London and the main course prices are not very different to the ghastly diners that dominate London and it’s so much better. I can’t believe I have been in London 30 years and have only just discovered Rules. It won’t be very long before I go back. Loved it!!
Be the first to ReplyJust about faultless...
Took two old friends to lunch last Friday. I'd not been since I used to live and work in London 20 odd years ago and hoped Rules would not disappoint. It did not. Service was friendly and quietly efficient, food first-rate (esp. smoked salmon, rib of beef and plum/cherry/apple crumble to die for). Not the cheapest lunch I've ever had but apart from eating well we also had our fair share of wine, aperitifs and digestifs (and now I'm a country bumpkin London prices always shock me). If I have one teeny cavil it is that reservations are made for two hour dining slots. They weren't very busy when we went and there was no pressure at all as we hit more like 4 hours - but having spent x hundred quid I think I'd have been a bit miffed to be hurried along much sooner...
Be the first to ReplyClassic British Food Excellently Done
This was my second visit here and it did not disappoint. We had drinks before dinner in the conservatory which is lovely. It feels fabulously Victorian. Martinis were excellent. The dining rooms are wonderfully old school and very cosy. Excellent wine list. Food very traditional and nothing disappointed. In particular, the sole was fantastic. Flawless service. Be aware that there is a dress code though! Friends came to join us for drinks after dinner and the staff, while still wonderfully polite, wouldn’t serve them as they were wearing shorts.

I was really looking forward to my visit to Rules despite visiting on my own. The restaurant itself is visually a feast creating a wonderful ambience. The staff were very attentive and always at hand. Unfortunately the thing that lets it all down was the food. I had steak and kidney pudding for the main course but there was no kidney in it. It was also completely dry inside with the gravy in a side dish. Lastly it was topped by an oyster which just doesn't compliment the dish at all. For dessert I had the syrup sponge. This was really good apart from a dollop of creme fraiche on the plate (why?!) and the syrup being so sickly sweet it was almost unbearable. This is not a cheap restaurant to visit. Overall, a bit of a shame and not as perfect as I'd hoped for.
