OK, this review is for Kiwis travelling to Melbourne, who maybe astounded at the food pries in Australia. I read all the wonderful reviews, but I was very disappointed. I had the Pasta with Pork Ragu which was $32 AUS. Expensive in my eyes. The plate was just that - pasta with a thin ragu sauce. The pasta was very al dente, the sauce was tasty, but very little of it. My partner had Roast Chicken $44 AUS. It consisted of a leg and breast of chicken, sitting on some roasted peppers. Tasty, but nothing fantastic for the price. The waiter was OVER attentive, wiping our table every so often when it had nothing on it, filling our glasses with water every two seconds. Had friendly chatter, but was not really interested in listening to us when we replied. The bill at the end offered options for tips! as he stood over us. Felt that we had to give a tip, even when we were not satisfied. So that's why I would not commend this restaurant.

Deeeeelcious! I'm a jaded eater outer and few places are as satisfying as home cooking, but the glowing reviews are all true! Such a treat to go somewhere that's chilled and every delectable morsel of fine fine produce is inherently recognisable, simply and lovingly enhanced. I walked out feeling good and like I could do it all again with very little effort at all. If there's somewhere equivalent in Sydney can you please tell me! Highly recommend Rosa's

Wow this was a top class meal from start to finish. This is definitely a hidden gem and was just around the corner from our accommodation. Great recommendation from the hosts for wine (a spectacular Wangolina Lagrein Red) and also food courses. We shared everything, amazing starters, we both had pasta dishes for main and shared the desert (see picture of tart which was amazing) - thank you Rosas Canteen, we really enjoyed it

This restaurant is now my favourite place to eat in Melbourne. Food is fabulous, everything we chose was excellent. Staff so efficient and friendly. Wines are superb. I can’t wait to go again.
Be the first to ReplyFive years later - still a great experience
Its been over five years since I have been to Rosa's Canteen, not by choice but due to a move interstate with work. I recalled previous business lunches which were always excellent and I took my pretty fussy daughter, her partner and a good friend who owns and runs food and beverage festivals and has owned his own hotels etc. Overall the food was outstanding and innovative, the ink squid pasta was by all accounts excellent and I really enjoyed the pickled king fish antipasti and pasta with chicken liver. The service was relaxed and welcoming and they got the balance right in terms of attentive and engaging service and space for us to enjoy each others company. The waiters knowledge was also excellent. All agreed it was a great choice and we all enjoyed the atmosphere, service, food and wine. It was so good that my daughters partner was on the phone after the dinner to tell his mum about it and to make arrangements to take her to dinner there the next time she is in Melbourne.
Be the first to ReplyNot quite Sicilian
Having recently visited Sicily and thoroughly enjoy the food and wines there, we found ourselves disappointed with this interpretation. The panelle was very thin and was more akin to corn chips than the real thing. The Braciole rolled beef, whilst well presented didn’t have the nutty textures I’d expect from the real thing either. The owner runs tours to Sicily and would surely know the experiences has been modified for some reason.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful service and beautiful food
This restaurant has been on my list for a while. After a long day of driving from adelaide we spontaneously decided to dine here. As a couple in our ‘50’s, we appreciate good food. We were greeted warmly on this Friday night and offered to take our coats. Service was constant and attentive. Menu was very interesting. We were careful not to over order. We enjoyed some wine, shared meatball entre and pasta mains. Conservative serve sizes but still enough food. Too full for desert. My only negative is that I don’t like seafood or fennel and they feature in this current menu. About $130 for two of us and we felt that we had a value and relaxing meal. I was ready for sleep!

Calling this a Canteen is the only misstep I found in a memorable lunch (because dinner Rez is hard to get on short notice). Excellent Sicilian fare and knowledgeable, friendly service. I’ll eat here on every return to Melbourne.

My score 4.5 stars. J & I had lunch here a while ago. Lovely setting, relaxed but attentive staff & good to see Rosa smiling while working in the kitchen. We had: Asparagus w Buffalo mozzarella (entree) > J really liked the very fine egg & anchovy sauce. Calamari fritti (entree) > Beautifuly cooked & I really loved the fried sage & hint of chilli. J had Barramundi w saffron butter sauce > delicious. I had Pappardelle w prawns > the pasta was quite al dente & superb - the pistachio pesto yummy. We had a mixed leaf salad & a tasty bottle of Soave. If we hadn't had an appointment to get to we would have stayed for dessert. A great experience.

A bit hard to find but well worth the effort !! Food & wine was fantastic !! Cod Fish was one of the best dishes I have eaten in a restaurant in ages. Our waiter extremely knowledgeable & helpful especially in selecting matching wines.
Be the first to ReplyA delightful little restaurant
We arrived later into Melbourne than expected. Just wanted some where close and easy. A quiet night. The staff were pleasant and welcoming. The food was delicious. Overall a nice experience to start our Melbourne getaway
Be the first to ReplyThe BEST meal I had in Melbourne! (March 2022 menu)
An amazing place for delicious Italian/Mediterranean food. Started off with the baked fish and the rigatoni - was very impressed but another main dish on the menu, that was so pleasantly and poetically described by our server, was calling us to try it. And I’m so glad I did because that dish was the definition of a 10/10 - one of the best pasta combinations I’ve ever had. Highly recommended: Housemade trenette with fish, mussels & nduja pangrattato. It’s simplicity at its finest - brimming with umami flavours. It’s a oil tossed based pasta cooked with mussel-infused water, perfectly cooked & flavoured fish and a dressing of breadcrumbs. It was our server’s most confident recommendation and his personal favourite - and it did not disappoint at all. If you see it on the menu, please go for it!! The only disclaimer would be that it seems Rosa’s changes their menu every season; so favourites or staples may not be around at the next visit. Please note that my recommendations come from the March 2022 period/season!

Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, great service
Based on Trip reviews I tried this restaurant and was not disappointed. The menu is not extensive but the flavors and variety on offer was wonderful. The wait staff - Bradley - was attentive and answered all questions with ease. He also suggested an excellent wine pairing which was right on the mark. Will definitely go back again.

Just really lovely food from the entre through to the desert. Beautiful delicate flavours. Plus the service was great. Really friendly and helpful.
Be the first to ReplySicilian cuisine with seasonal menu
This is my third time at Rosa's Canteen. I get a sense that they have lots of regulars based on the greetings from wait staff to diners. It's not surprising as the menu is seasonal so well worth a revisit. My first visit was a date night, business lunch then with a girlfriend. Each visit was a great experience. Not sure if it was a coincidence or by design but I had the same waiter on each visit. Brad was very attentive and pleasant.

A lovely venue with excellent food. The menu was interesting and the food deliciously flavoursome. Service was excellent. Atmosphere good and well priced. We had mullet entree. Pork & fennel ragu & prawn pasta. Yum.
