Good food, great experience, but didn't really wow us.
We expected some robust and unique flavors, but it felt generic(?) my favorite was the pasta dish with seafood, but the other items were ok.We came here because the other michelin restaurant was all booked out. Thinking that michelin awarded restaurants would be similar, we dined at San Martino. While their hospitality was spectacular, the meal and pacing was not. We waited perhaps 15-30 mins for certain items, which was off putting with the coursing of the meal that needed to flow a little more fluidly. All in all, hospitality was exceptional, but the food and coursing fell short for the price point.

I did not expect to find an elegant restaurant with such fine preparations on a side street in a hill town in Italy. What a happy surprise! The rustic dining room is overlaid with elegance as there are fine little touches in every detail. The food was superb, from the bread through dessert. Traditional foods are given a modern finesse. For example, the risotto was served with shrimp and lard. Lard? Really? I was told this is traditional. I couldn't imagine ordering something with lard, let alone eating it, so I ordered the risotto thinking I would pick out the lard. Silly me! There were a small number of small cubes on the risotto that were crisped and tasted like pork belly. So this is lard! Sometimes you just have to try something out of your comfort zone when you are in the right setting. I am glad I did!If you are traveling in Tuscany and visit San Gimignano, I highly recommend San Martino 26 for dinner--it is an elegant and delicious end to the day.
Be the first to ReplyA little too cute with the food.
There was nothing we absolutely loved in a country full of food we absolutely loved. Service and presentation were excellent. For the area it is pretty expensive. We spent €330 on 4 people. One appetizer, one entree per person. Two bottles of wine at €35 each. We will be going more casual rest of trip.

What a gem! You will not regret the experience at the restaurant. It began with the owner saying "Welcome to the family". Salmon ceviche was the best one I have ever had. Steak, deer, and our pasta dishes were all amazing. Portions are small, but the flavors are astounding. The desserts were originally presented and absolutely delicious. We truly enjoyed our evening and will be recommending it to others. Ciao

Excellent food, beautifully presented and really good costumer service! I had my birthday dinner there, and the beef steak with potatoes is to die for!
Be the first to ReplyThis place was a bit fancy, but the food was good.
I generally loved San Gimignano because it felt like a small town and was comfortable, but I didn't feel that way in this restaurant. Even though they were super accommodating with my gluten allergy (and offered gluten free bread and gluten free options), it just felt a bit stuffy. The portions were a bit small (for some things), so my husband ordered a pasta dish (the agnolotti di cinghialei) and then the wild boar. He said the pasta was cooked perfectly-- and was outstanding (definitely a tiny portion)-- and the wild boar was also great-- tender and not overcooked. The "sides" it comes with are a bit deceiving. It's really just a meat dish with drops of puree for color in purple carrots, potatoes, etc. I had the assorted vegetables. I initially scoffed at the cost, but it was a HUGE portion! I wouldn't say I would be back, but it was certainly a great culinary experience to try once!

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel for part of our honeymoon. My husband rented a car at the airport, which made our adventures our own. This hotel and restaurant is in a romantic, provincial area but close enough to explore local life that is not touristy and can give you a perspective of real Italian life. I think traveling by car was the only way to get to this place. So, I consider it the epicenter to culture and even the simple pizza pie or cannoli hang out. San Martino had awesome service and professionalism. I consider my husband and I to be simple. But they still treated us special. And the prices were affordable. We sat in our own corner of the room. All of the other patrons were in a separate part of the restaurant. Maybe because dinner is served late in Italy around 7 pm. But I didn't change my preference for 5-6pm dinner. When in Tuscany, you have to try the region's specialty, which are the mushrooms and truffles. The restaurant has the most amazing and dreamy risotto truffle. I have never had anything like this. Very romantic atmosphere. The wine tasting is the best in the world here in Tuscany, Italy. Every drop is exquisite. Also, Tuscany is not touristy. So, you beat the crowds and experience world renowned cuisine, history, and a setting explored as if you are the only one there. This hotel and restaurant made this possible, as we ate here every night. If you can travel, Tuscany and San Martino ought to be on your bucket list. This place is my most special memory of my world travels. We went in the spring time, when the Alps still have snow but Tuscany had cool weather with no heat and humidity. Perhaps this was not peak season and lended itself to our perfect experience.
Be the first to ReplyClassy place a bit off the beaten track.
First class food and service. It's crowded and booked up fairly quickly so it's really good get reservations there in advance. Portion size was a little bit small but overall the price was reasonable for this quality. We paid about €57 for two with some wine and appetizer
Be the first to ReplyOne of our all-time best restaurant experiences.
Maybe it was because we were the first patrons last Saturday night with 7p reservations (which I recommend as they filled ip quickly) so the attentiveness was unparalleled. Maybe it was the 48 € Brunello di Montalcino (that we had to buy the next day for 26€) that was given an All-Star presentation in some special wine glasses. Or the Bistecca Fiorentine for two. Likely it was this and everything else that made for truly pleasant dining in a truly special place...You MUST go!
Be the first to ReplySuperb ambiance.
Great food. Professional service. We had the Fagottino alla Beccaccia, a delicious pork based concoction wrapped in a crepe, the tartare that was exquisite, and the onion soup. At a cost of 87 Euros for three people including drinks and deserts this was a pricey outing, but well worth it. We highly reccomend this wonderful restaurant. We were also very lucky to be sitting near the kitchen and were able to see the chefs at work through the glass door. They are true professionals.
