Worth a visit
It is nice place with good food and nice service. Some courses was great and some okay. Worst part of the restaurant are bad lights. They ruin atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyLovely AND delicious!
I enjoyed the ambiance, the staff were friendly and enthused -- and the food was wonderful! The crunchy crab and oxtail in particular were wonderful! I enjoyed the Sommelier and her recommendations, too. Everyone seemed proud of the restaurant and service, and rightly so! Bravo!
Be the first to ReplyVery good upmarket venue in old town
Donostia boasts so many Michelin stars, and Kokotxa has only one. Good! So you get excellent food at less ridiculous prices. We had a market menu lunch and truly enjoyed all the dishes. Great service and presentation, and of course the feast of tastes and flavors.
Be the first to ReplyBrilliant food
Brilliant food Food was superb but the matching wines extremely disappointing and very expensive. When advising the sommelier that the first wine was ‘sour’ ie oxidised - she said the wines were ‘uncommon’. Do certainly go for the food but buy a bottle of wine to enjoy.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best dinners we've had
Last month, three of us (my wife and I and a friend who traveled with us) enjoyed a tasting menu dinner at Kokotxa. During this trip across the pond, we had several excellent dinners, mostly on the recommendations of the Michelin Guide. And against this background, the meal at the Kokotxa was remarkable. Every course (2 appetizers, 5 mains, and 3+ deserts) walked an impeccable balance between the multiple tastes on the plate (a beautiful selection of dinnerware, by the way), the relationship between what has already been served, the flawless amount of food, and the unashamedly beautiful presentation. This ability to sequence and tie the courses together in a coherent and delicious narrative is what distinguishes merely excellent restaurants from the inspired ones. The restaurant accommodated my pescatarian food preference, acknowledging an earlier email asking them about this, and they have done so with perfect pacing and variety. We did not partake in the wine pairing and asked a sommelier for a recommendation. We were rewarded with a recommendation of an excellent Tempranillo from San Cobate which paired rather well with the seafood and the mean dishes. I seldom award 5-point reviews, but there is simply no argument that this was one of the best meals of our lives. There we no missteps in the meal itself nor in the unobtrusive but efficient service. Some of the standouts: Smoked red prawns appetizer, Bonito belly (aubergine, peach) main, and the white-chocolate -based desert. My meat-eating diners waxed ecstatic over the perfectly cooked pigeon. Seriously, do yourself a favor and allow yourself the pleasure of a meal at the Kokotxa.
Be the first to ReplyToo much fanfare but nothing else
I found this restaurant overrated, too much show and nothing else. We chose the tasting menu (we we not allowed to have one market and one tasting menu...is that complicated?) All these chefs when they get one Michelin star think they are God...the pricing of wines ridiculously expensive...such a wanna be elegant-jet set restaurant that does not accept American Express...just with that they lower themselves to a "dining joint category". In brief, would I go back? absolutely not. On my way to the restaurant I was in a store in the neighborhood and when I told them that I as going to have lunch at Kokotxa, they made a face like saying ...you will regret it...and I did...
Be the first to ReplyAmazing staff -
This is a review of the staff and experience as opposed to the food , which was as others have commented exceptional. On a Thursday we happened by kokotxa (my wife and 8 month old) we enquired about a reservation inclusive of our daughter , they said no problem and showed us the table we would sit on and advised us to book online .we were delighted and booked for lunch the following Tuesday .In hindsight it was a mistake as our 8 month old surprisingly behaved like an 8 month old. She wasn’t over the top , just wanted to be out of the high chair , difficult with food we had brought for her ,let the odd screech out and a bit whingey .But the staff were amazing , reassured us everything was ok and that we were not disturbing anyone , even though I think we were ! At one stage the staff offered to clean the baby cutlery and dish we had brought as there was quite a mess (kiwi/orange/omelette) we of course said no , but they insisted ! We were in and out in 2 hours and went for the market menu - As others have pointed out it was fantastic. Outside the restaurant we bumped into 3 guys from Canada who were seated close to us at dinner , we apologised for bringing our daughter and that it was a mistake on our behalf (not hers!) and hoped they were not too inconvenienced - I have to say they were so nice about it , saying she was so well behaved etc etc , helped us feel a little better so if reading this Tks to the staff and the Canadian gents !

Absolutely divine. Enjoyed each course more than the last. Well worth a visit for the food lover. A couple from Brussels and Galway.

Almost a five
Wanted to visit one of San Sebastian’s Michelin starred restaurants and chose this one. Decor was quite simple but well done with various nautical themed wall decorations. Staff were friendly. Slight initial mix up with my wife and I receiving different menus. Two tasting menus on offer. We selected the smaller one as shown in the picture below. The only change was that fresh asparagus was substituted for the out of season artichoke dish. Pictures of the various courses are below. Highlights were the hake fish of the day and the lamb shoulder. The only disappointment was the desserts. The first Apple dish was rather like baby food with its pureed apple accompanied by rosemary ice cream. The second dish also featured ice cream and was a bit pedestrian. Plating and choice of plate throughout was good other than the bland coloured petit fours on a wooden dish which made it look unappetising. Had the desserts been better, would have rated as a 5.
Be the first to ReplyGood, but ...
As you would expect at this level, the cooking was flawless, and the presentation excellent. We opted for the cheaper market menu. Overall, we thought the savoury courses were too often a bit sweet, which made the whole menu feel a bit unbalanced.
Service was "correct", but in general felt a bit rushed and a little disjointed.
So, overall a very good meal, but let down a little by a few small things.
The house white Rioja, by the way is excellent
Don’t miss it!
A really excellent meal help Byrne wine pairings from the lovely sommelier Carolina, all staff helpful efficient and knowledgeable. A lovely evening
Be the first to ReplyGreat restaurant with excellent sommelier.
To be honest I was a bit hesitant to book here because of some reviews on Tripadvisor. I must say I am very glad we did visit Kokotxa. It was excellent. I loved all dishes but for me the tarbot and pigeon stood out. And of course Carolina, the sommelier who loves stroopwafels. Wine pairings were daring but impeccable. We will come back when we visit San Sebastián.
Be the first to ReplySublime birthday lunch
Such a fantastic experience with each plate perfectly executed and presented to us. We had the full tasting menu and it was so good. A great way to spend a birthday. Delicious.
People claiming to be foodies and finding fault here need to have a word with themselves as it's pretentious and uncalled for.
The waiting staff are really friendly and made the experience.
Enjoy !!!!!
