Purple Yam Reviews from The Last Year
This would be my second time coming here the span of two
This would be my second time coming here the span of two weeks. really loved the food and the ambience, definitely a nice intimate spot for a quick lunch or dinner. The staff was very accommodating & the vibe was very calm. I wish there were more items on the menu but other than that I have nothing bad to say.

Stop by Purple Yam today with family who were really looking forward to their amazing chicken Adobe.. However we were turned away at 8:20 because the staff says that they close at 9 and start cleaning up at 8::30.. I think if it was the manager he we would have been allowed to seat at 8:20pm because he understand why he has a business.. Anyway iI guess business after the pandemic is booming again so it's ok to turn away customers. Given that I supported this restaurant throughout we were really disappointed that even though we were there 40 mins before closing time we were not allowed service..

Took me a couple years but returned last night to try some other menu items. In 2024 I still think the 3.5-4 star rating is accurate. Lumpia Shanghai ($9) was great but piping hot - had to dig into the entrees first to let them cool down! Oxtail kare kare ($32) was one of the specials of the night and it was perfectly tender and definitely tasty, especially with a dash of the shrimp paste. We subbed the white rice with garlic rice for an extra $2 but the difference in taste was a bit too subtle. Chicken adobo ($19) fell a bit short. I'd consider myself an average home cook, and I've learned how to make this dish at home. Their chicken adobo tasted pretty identical to mine but slightly over cooked, which didn't leave me all that impressed. However what did pleasantly surprise us was dessert. We ordered the ube tikoy ($10) and it was so good! Loved the crisp on it, it wasn't overly sweet, paired perfectly with ice cream, and reminded us of the Chinese new year cake (nian gao). Would definitely recommend this dessert which says a lot since I'm not usually a dessert person! Service was good but a bit on the slower side again. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but it's a decent dinner option on Cortelyou.

I would give it a higher rating but I was not so jazzed
I would give it a higher rating but I was not so jazzed about the food. The food was fresh and freshly prepared. I reckon I'm just not into having this food without a dumpling or something extra to compliment the dishes. I do not eat meat. I have not eaten meat for over sixty years. My family and I came, in part, to this restaurant this evening as it would suit us all, those who eat meat and those who do not. It was a monumental disappointment for all of us, meat eaters and non meat eaters, alIke. The only saving grace was that amazing woman who was waitstaff and bar tender who had handled it all on her own. I will not be returning.

We were seated at 8:05, got water practically thrown on our table about 10 min later with a promise to be right back. They didn't come back for another 15 minutes. Then started to take orders of the two tables next to us who had been seated after us, right next to us. When we spoke up, we gave our full order, drinks, apps & main. Instead of putting it directly the kitchen, just a couple of steps away, they returned to the others before placing our orders with the kitchen. The food came out 20 minutes later and yup, u guessed it. The other tables who came after us had already gotten their drinks & received their orders, but ours were never served. At 840 we just left... Very unprofessional and rude servers.
Overall, the service and staff were very nice and attentive.
Ambiance is comfortable and quiet. Ordered japchae with beef, pancit, lechon and fresh lumpia along with a Makku. The japchae was delicious with beef with deep searing. By far the best dish. The lechon is just as others have described- juicy and crispy with a great sauce. The pancit was a little boring but we couldn't tell if it was because we were eating it with japchae. The fresh lumpia was different. Mostly tasted of Napa cabbage and other crunchy veggies. But the Makku- what a delicious beverage. I will definitely be looking for that in stores. I would recommend a visit if you are interested in delicious lechon and japchae.
Delicious brunch, my favorite spot on Cortelyou.

Food and service were amazing.
Pork Buns, Spring Rolls, Dumplings; all great. Goat Curry with rice pancakes and mango chutney was wild. Kimchi fried rice was going craaaaazy. And for desert, the banana and crepe with ice cream, I mean dear lord. Top meal ever all time

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
