Pujol Ciudad de México Reviews
Spectacle and theatre, but didn’t hit all the marks
We went to Puloj because of its Michelin stars and reputation. It was good and had lots of staff running around, but felt like a bit too much like production line for us and every dish didn’t hit the mark even if there are a couple of very good ones. If you like theatre and the spectacle then it is a winner, but we enjoyed the food and atmosphere at other restaurants more in Mexico City (Baldio was the standout for us) and we have enjoyed other Michelin star restaurants much more around the world. We went as a couple and were seated in a row of 10 - 12 people all being given the food and the script at the same time. Timings seem choreographed and mechanical. The highlights for us were the crab and abalone tora abogada, mackerel ceviche and mussel and pineapple taco. There were other dishes we didn’t finish. The staff were friendly and attentive, but it felt like they were against the clock, and the overall experience didn’t tally with the overall high price.
Don’t bother… the stars have lost their shine.
The first course had three different dishes. We were given one order to eat the 3 dishes and the table next to us was given a different order. We were lifting our glasses to drink wine and the waiter attempted to place a plate almost hitting my glass. There were two of us eating and there was no attempt to place both plates at the same time. There was a dish that was intended to be eaten as tacos. For us he said here are tortillas to go with the dish. For the table next to us he said “this is intended to be eaten as tacos”. When we asked our waiter about the difference he got defensive, didn’t apologize and tried to make it about his English. There was a local fruit that had a skin and hard seeds, but no explanation was given as to what was/was not edible. The staff hit the back of my chair more times than I could count. We asked for a list of the wines used in the pairings and had to ask again before we left the restaurant. The meal felt rushed and chaotic. The waiters seemed hurried and unorganized. They certainly did not seem happy in their jobs. And whatever you do, don’t sit at one of the tables by the open kitchen door unless you want to see the bathroom and like to have people huddling around your table. Not sure how they got two Michelin stars. Cocina de Autor far exceeded this with their 1 star.
Underwhelming experience.
Unfortunately, the restaurant falls well below the hype. While the food was OK, it was not great and certainly not spectacular as you would expect from a Michelin rated restaurant and for the cost of the meal. The service staff seemed tired and mechanical. No wine pairing with the menu and disappointing meal quality, nowhere close to EM or Rosetta.
Pujol is Not What it Used to Be
This was our second time to Pujol. The first was about 9 years ago in their old location. And it was one of the best dining experineces of our life. We chose the Degustacion Menu this time. We found the meal to be very good and the service highly attentive. For a party of five with each ordering a cocktail, a bottle of wine and an additional glass. the bill came out to 25,305 (pesos), not including the tip. Mexico City is brimming with delicious restaurants not to mention countless street vendors whose offerings are fresh and flavorfull. The food that we ate at Pujol this time is not worth what we paid. Only go there if you want to have a special experience-- the space, the decor, the service, the presentation, and of course the price. But the food itself is nothing special. For comparison, we went to Caracol and paid a quarter of the price. The food was as good if not better and the service was much warmer and the wait staff seemed appreciably less tense. Dont bother with Pujol. And for reference I have been to Eleven Madison Park in NYC where the food was also very expensive but wonderous. Pujol is not what it used to be. It is disappointing to see how such a shining star in the culinary world has faded and yet somehow still thinks of itself as special.
Totally worth to be there, excellent food and service, a romantic setting!
Beautiful restaurant, excellent service and delicious food. The workers have such attention to detail, we were sit next to the kitchen, and we went inside to take pictures and videos, The food is exquisite, same as the drinks, l don’t know why this year is no longer on the top 50 best restaurants in the world. We have being in different top best in different countries and it’s totally worth be there, prices affordable if you compare with a regular chain restaurant in any other country, but here you are in a unique Michelle star top world class restaurant.
Not the experience that I expected.
This was celebration of a major event. The experience was underwhelming at best. The restaurant was open to the elements, without heaters.the food was ok, but with missteps: muscle shells in the birria which could have broken a tooth. 3 sopas for 2 people. Temperature of food was lukewarm. For such a Highly rated and expensive restaurant, it was average at best. And the bathrooms were very dark.
Have a culinary experience to remember
Pujol is tucked away in a very shiek part of Mexico City. The atmosphere is calm and sophisticated. I sat at the Taco bar area( for lack of a better term ) watching the mixologist work their magic was flawless. The staff are there to make sure your every need is taken care of. The food started coming and one after another course seemed tobe better than the one before. I had the wine paring and it was spot on every wine was delicious and from Mexico. This restaurant is not for those on a budget but if you have the means please go have yourself a culinary experience
Good, but not great
Renowned as the best Mexican restaurant, we had very high expectations despite its decline in theworlds50best. The first thing we notice is the beauty of the restaurant. Very chic and refined, we fell in love with the outdoor terrace in the evening. The service is impeccable and worthy of this type of restaurant. As for the food, we loved the Rock Fish pistachio mole, the soursop citrus mousse dessert and the egg in the first course. Their famous smoked corn and ant dish is also very interesting. The braised lamb is good, but nothing more. The classic Mole aged 3400 days, probably good, but I'm not a fan of mole. In the finals, we ate very well, but for a restaurant of this reputation, I expected a lot more. For a former top 10, it's rather disappointing. For the wines, we took the pairings. Very disappointed, only white wines, no red, even for the braised lamb. Not convinced by the pairings and for the price, it's really not worth it, it doesn't add anything to the experience. In the end, yes, it's a very good restaurant, we had a great evening, but at this price ($2400 CAD for 4), we are far from the experiences of several theworlds50best.
Amazing food and service
Dining at Pujol was a highlight of my trip to Mexico City. I was meeting a friend for dinner, who was running late, so the waiter brought over some books about how the restaurant started after I mentioned my love of cooking. It was very thoughtful to share the history of the establishment. The food and cocktails were incredible, perfectly paced courses. We also never felt rushed, but you move outdoors for dessert which was a nice change of scenery. They even let us peak in the kitchen to see how the kitchen runs which was amazing.
Worth the Visit - But Not the Michelin Stars
Pujol has long been a darling of restaurant reviews and recently earned two coveted stars in the June 2024 Michelin Guide. It doesn’t deserve them. To be clear, the food was very good, the service was good, and the atmosphere was very good; maybe even excellent in the atmosphere although this is a crowded place. However, how the food rates two stars simply escapes me. My wife and I eat in Michelin restaurants all over the world. I confess our tastes are discriminating, if not demanding. So with its stellar reputation and recent two star award we expected something you can’t get anywhere else - except at the highest level that this is supposed to be. We did not find that the case. As to the food it was surely well done but the marriage of amazing textures and flavors that I have come to expect at this level - that idea that your sense of taste is awakened by flavors and textures etc., that you never experienced or didn’t think could come together to form what what you are experiencing- was definitely not there. Some dishes were better than others. Nothing was amazing. That’s just the reality. Presentation was also simply lackluster at this level. I have seen presentation that is mind blowing at high level restaurants. I have enclosed photos of some of the dishes. Does this seem like two-star presentation to you? You decide. As to service, service overall did not meet any Michelin level. This is not to say that our waiter was not dedicated and helpful. But at this level a fully functional team is required to deliver exceptional service and they are simply overloaded by the abundance of tables being hosted at once. We were on course three when we asked the server to actually bring us a menu, they having forgot at the outset; we never saw one in advance of ordering. One dish arrived without the sauce where we had to wait for it to be delivered a few minutes later. That’s not a sin in restaurant service. But with two Michelin stars, it is. This is a very good restaurant. You should go. The price is abundantly fair. So there’s no reason to miss this destination place. However, if you have experience with Michelin restaurants you may find yourself doing a little head scratching from being a bit perplexed if not outright disappointed.
Highly over rated. Noisy restaurant.
Very noisy Michelin star restaurant. Waiters walking ans running around. Unpleasant restaurant to chill and relax. Highly over rated. Bill took 30 minutes to arrive and staff are rude. There are better Michelin star restaurants out there.
The restaurant which brought Mexican cuisine to the world food scene
This is one of our reasons for visiting Mexico City and we were not disappointed. Five stars for successfully blending tradition and innovation. Ingredients indigenous to Mexico were used and presented in a modern and creative way but nothing too abstract or pretentious. Just solid delicious food. While not all the dishes were exceptional, you can see and taste the work that came with each dish. Outstanding were the smoky baby corn starters with chicatana ants, the tlayuda (open-faced tortilla) with aged sheep cheese, truffles and ayocote and of course the nuevo and madre mole (3,335 days). While simply presented, the layers of flavors of the mole (sweet, tart, nutty, smoky, herbaceous, minty) underlie the laborious process of mixing more than 2 dozen ingredients to produce this symbol of Mexican heritage and gastronomy. We were invited to have our dessert in their outdoor patio. At first, I was disappointed the dessert was not its famous churros, but the refreshing soursop mousse was one of the uniquely memorable desserts I’ve ever had. To top off our wonderful meal, we were presented with their heavenly version of the concha with our coffee. The pricing (without wine pairing) is very reasonable, about half for similarly-rated restaurants in NYC and Europe. If you are expecting the Mexican food you have in the US, you will be disappointed. This is authentic Mexican food, very different from the one-note Tex-Mex we have here.
Pujol lives up to its top 50 rating
Pujol is a great choice for fine dining. There are three different menus depending on where you eat. I ate at the bar for the savory courses and then they moved me to the terrace for the sweet courses. The service was excellent as was the food. The meal was much more tilted to seafood than meat. If there is something you do not want or have an allergy, they will gladly change items on the set menu to accommodate you. Definitely worth a stop if you are in Mexico City.
Product doesn’t match the price
This restaurant is very classy and the staff are amazing. The food was better than average, but I felt like it fell far from the incredibly high price. I’m fortunate to be able to eat at many top rated restaurants around the world. This one, at nearly the equivalent of $450 (USD) per person out the door, has been among the most expensive meals I’ve had. I don’t usually mind paying for exceptional food, wine, and service, but I didn’t feel like this experience really delivered at its price point. It seemed like they were sort of trying to be a French Laundry kind of experience, but they haven’t nailed it. It took 3-1/3 hours for us to get through this experience. There were very long wait times between the small portions of the meal. Our table conversation commonly went to wondering what the backup could be in the kitchen. Our group got back to the hotel very late, which caused us to all have a rough morning the following day trying to keep the rest of our schedule on time. We were a group of 8 patrons. Our out the door total was nearly $3,600 (USD) or $61,000 (MX). For this price we should have had at least one, but probably two dedicated servers for our table. Instead, our servers were serving several tables and our wait times between courses and refills were very lengthy. Of the several courses of the meal, there were only two that were really good. Everyone in my group are very well traveled and appreciate a wide array of cuisines and most of our dishes left our table not completely eaten because the food was mediocre. There was no part of this experience that would make me suggest this restaurant to anybody. Conversely, I would encourage people to try other options that may be significantly cheaper and provide a much better culinary experience.
Literally so underwhelming, stupidly expensive, strange food with no course that stood out , service was fine
I waited for years to get a table and was shocked as friends took me who are real foodies and they were underwhelmed to put it mildly, overpriced and ordinary
Great restaurant to visit just once
Culinary experience that blends ancient techniques with modern gastronomy. Six delicious courses but a little overpriced in my opinion.
Mediocre food/experience. Stunning ambiance
My husband and I had this on our much anticipated visit to Mexico City and used it as our destination for our 10 year anniversary dinner We arrived and were welcomed warmly and brought to our table. The menu presentation and explanation was beautiful. From there, things just seemed a bit off. The service was hit or miss. Instead of being served in tandem from a specific side, we were served at random without explanation of the food until several minutes after food was dropped. The servers also seemed to be in a small argument over it but of the 6 courses 3 of them were served at different times from different sides by one person vs two. Seems particular but for a $700 usd meal I was hoping for perfect service execution. Next, the food. Here is where i wished for more as it wasn’t especially unique or outstanding (excluding the snacks, ceviche and dessert which were standouts). Snacks = fascinating tostada, mushroom soup and smoked corn. The snacks served were delicious, interesting presentation and complex mix of flavors. From there it went downhill. 1st course = snacks 2nd = scallop ceviche. This was varied and layered. Incredible melt in your mouth scallops. 3rd = tostada of some sort. Good, not great. The ahi tostada at Contramar blew this out of the water. 4th = rock fish with green sauce and fava beans. Fine, not bad. Nothing to write about. 5th = stuffed cabbage leaf and octopus. No real flavor. Bland and slightly overcooked. 6th = mole. The story of it being cooked 3364+ days is interesting however a plate with mole sauce only was really lacking. I wished for more. Dessert was a delicious cream, sorbet. Well balanced, interesting textures. Overall, not worth the hype. I wish I saved the money and went to Quintonil instead.
Wonderful
Incredible experience. Expensive but the food and service made it worthwhile. Every course was interesting and fantastic. Wish we could give it more than 5 stars.
Less impressive and twice as expensive
We had dinner here back in 2019 and were very impressed. Being back in Mexico City, we wanted to visit again. This time, we were less impressed. All of the dishes we liked were ones we had previously had. The new dishes were...bland. The waiters were constantly taking the drink menus away, and we'd have to ask for them again to order something, which was somewhat annoying. I guess the priority was to keep the table clear. Anyway, this was nearly twice as expensive as our visit in 2019. We are probably done with Pujol, unfortunately. We have had our experience there, and will focus more on mid-range, more casual, dining next time.
Doesn’t disappoint!
Amazing service and stunning food!!!
Great anniversary dinner - and accommodating of a vegan diner!
This was my second time to Pujol and it was just as perfect as the first. This time I came for my anniversary. I'm a foodie, and my partner is vegan. It's always a challenge to see which fine-dining restaurants will adapt for a vegan diet. I'm happy to report Pujol went above and beyond to accommodate him. We did the bar seating, and they printed him a custom menu and ensured the level of dietary restrictions and reminded him of ingredients along the way - which was very appreciated because he is severely lactose intolerant. Also the famous mole is vegan - who knew?! I ate all the delicious meat and fish dishes, and we just had a great time, and they kindly celebrated our anniversary with them. I strongly recommend the drink pairing. I had a Mexican saki that I still think of near daily!!
Perfect from beginning to end.
Ignore any of the reviews that dis this place. Both the service and the food were 10 out of 10. The ambience is also amazing. I have never had a bad experience at a Relais a Chateau restaurant . While pricey it was worth every peso!
Food is decent but overpriced and the wine pours are MEAGER and expensive
We went to celebrate our honeymoon - it's been our list for a while. We would not go back - while the service was excellent, the food was just OK for the price, it was 15-20 minutes in between each course, and the wine per glass cost $20-40 and you received about 125-150 cl. One of the mains is a small plate of mole with a tortilla and another is a fairly bland pumpkin puree. We left unimpressed with the food and wine and at $450, the value is no longer there.
outstanding
This is a Must try restaurant. The presentation, the staff, the food, its all beyond amazing. Clearly everyone who works here from the chefs in the kitchen, to the managers at the front door, the waiters .. loves what they do. There is an air of pride in giving the best food and outstanding customer service. The place itself is very charming. We would like to go again to Mexico City just to have another meal there!
WOW
Best dining experience ever. Stuff were extremely friendly and personable. Fantastic service fantastic tasting menus.
Been there. Done that. Been done.
We had enough cocktails across the past several days so I opted not to have the $35 drinks I was thinking about while dining at the tacos bar. Our WATER came to $42. For water. The service is excellent. The setting it sleek and lovely. The urinal in the men’s room is next level. The food was good, albeit not anywhere close to the league of meals we have enjoyed elsewhere, including Quintonil, which is just blocks away, and in Paris and San Sebastián and more. I have no issue with spending crazy money for glorious dining. At $243pp for six small tacos and two small desserts, it would take something sublime to correlate with excellence. The octopus taco and the stuffed Brussels sprout taco were very good indeed, but how the sycophants rave makes no sense. Been there. Done that. This is a beautifully-choreographed assembly line that may well be churning out more profit than any other fine dining restaurant on Earth.
Felt like a scam, they doubled the price and cut the offerings in half for 2023
Beware, they have changed the taco omakase menu in the last two months (as of 2023). It is smaller, does not include beverage pairings (which it used to for the same price), and does not include any well-known dishes like the street snacks or famous mole (but they did bring them the mole right past us to a nearby table, adding insult to injury). They didn’t even offer a beverage pairing but said they could suggest cocktails or wines for each course if you wanted (price to be calculated at the end of your meal so you couldn’t even know how much it would cost). Very bizarre and disappointing experience, especially after all of the hype and reading about the same menu that was offered as little as two months ago (for less money!). The food was fine, nothing really wowed us like we were expecting. The service was also fine but we felt somewhat ignored and in the dark compared to other Michelin restaurants we have been to. We have them written notice of some dietary restrictions (my wife is pregnant) many days in advance and they didn’t have any alternative dishes planned for us, they just left things off existing dishes. It felt like a paired down, casual version of a Michelin experience for the same cost. The restaurant would be wise to set expectations with diners that things have changed. An OpenTable message would have gone a long way. Instead, we felt like what we received was not worth the cost. We were very excited about this meal and were disappointed it did not include any of the things we expected. We honestly had a much better experience at 1/10th the cost (with the same or better level of refinement) at Expendio de Maiz Sin Nombre!
Waste of (too much) money
Wow so disappointed by this tasting menu after all the hype regarding this place. Six of us dined, all originating from NYC. We are well traveled and know good food- and this is not it. Two of the 9 dishes were enjoyable (baby corn and pumpkin tamale (minus the overly pungent cheese on top). The rest ranged from average to tasteless, to disgusting and definitely not worth the $320 per couple price tag (US $). Atmosphere is nice, restaurant is pretty, service is impeccable, but would never eat here again and can’t recommend it. One dish consists of two different moles on a plate. Mole is intended to be a sauce, its much too intensely flavored on its own. And while strange tasting tortillas were included to use to dip, it wasn’t a dish- it was a plate of sauce and none of us enjoyed it. Can you imagine being served a plate of marinara sauce? Whole thing feels pretentious. Even dessert wasn’t good as it was tasteless. Can’t believe this is ranked in top 50 in the world. Save your money, theres much better restaurants in MC. We all agreed that dinner at Sud 777 was so much better and coat just 1/3 the price.
Art at its best
The most incredible dinning experience ever. Staff was hard working, kind and easy to talk with. Each dish was filled with textures and flavors that create the perfect recipe. Come hungry and enjoy each and every bite. A dinning experience that will live on.
Delightful and Europhic
By fate we got a reservation and totally loved Pujol. The service staff were impeccable, friendly, and top notch. It seemed like the whole dinning experience was a choreographed dance. The food was sensational.
