Prime + Proper Detroit Reviews
Always an incredible meal.
We tend to go once a year with a box group and get the private room in the basement. Incredible top shelf service only outdone (barely) by some of the best steaks around.

The service the menu the quality the food were all exceptional. It's even fun to go down to the bathroom downstairs because you can see all the meat in the freezer. I was here when we went to a Detroit Lions game and then someone told me that in 2021 someone had been killed in the speakeasy. Had I read that I probably wouldn't have come.

The service was very friendly and I loved the atmosphere and aesthetic of the restaurant. Food was very good. The Wagyu just melts in your mouth.
Wonderful atmosphere, service, drinks and food.
We were celebrating our son's birthday. The team made it a remarkable experience.

Prime & Proper is one of the best dining experiences we have ever been a part of. We reserved the bar-booth (of which there are only two in there restaurant) for our time here as it looks out int the bar area in a very special way. There are no wrong choices to make on this menu and all all steak is cured in house (one of the only spots to do this in the states) We had the pleasure of being served by the amazing Jason. He was so funny and knew his menu backwards and forwards. Jason is great at describing food items and helped us narrow down the menu. The salad was massive and enough to be shared. The wines were so solid and wine list never-ending. We opted for Noir OSETRA Cavier service which is accompanied by fresh bread, charlots, creme fresh, and a beautiful yellow sauce. The pearlized spoons provided the perfect way to enjoy this and this was not the least bit salty. We loved this. The Potato Pureè is a must as a side. We also loved the filet which was cooked to perfection and the salmon which was crispy on top and soft perfection in its center. Save room for desert and we suggest the trio of sorbets as they were incredible and covered an entire spectrum of tastes. Everyone we spoke to in Detroit was so excited that we had dined at Prime + Proper and we told them to ask for the incredible Jason to be your server as he is perfectly cast to represent this ledgendary steakhouse. We will 1000% be back! Thank you again, Jason!
This place is forever a win.
The food is always top tier and the service is exceptional. This is will continuously be one of our staples. My birthday brunch here is memorable.

The ambiance of this restaurant is really nice and the steaks are the best in Detroit. I love taking people here and celebrating special events here.
Will not return.
First, we used to LOVE Prime and Proper - we’ve been several times but our most recent was bad. We only ordered a few items but they were all disappointing - we ordered the shrimp cocktail and the shrimp was bad (smelled fishy, could not eat), the steak was overcooked and the service was disappointing. Literally no one took the time to ask how our meal was (so we didn’t have the opportunity to provide feedback). There are better options in Detroit.

My wife and I along with 4 other people met at P+P to celebrate my wife's birthday. The whole experience was not good. Very noisy, to the point we could not even hear our server! The food was not good! Very expensive. I don't mind spending money in a fine dining restaurant, which I thought this was! We will not be returning. This is also the feelings of my 4 guests also. Service was also very slow.
Great restaurant
The filet was fabulous! The team of servers-Jimmy-made the experience even better, and eating here is an experience! The dirty martini was probably one of best that I have ever had!!

For some reason my filet was super salty but I think it was a one off. The sides were super good. Service super good. Hefty bill
Was not impressed by Prime + Proper at all.
Prices were much higher than even other upscale steak houses nearby. Service was subpar, we still had empty appetizers dishes on our tables while we're having the main course. Hardly any check in to ensure all is well from the staff. We did go towards the end of the night on a weekday, but there were still plenty of staff in the restaurant to ensure proper handling of each table.
Absoultely Amazing.!!
My girlfriend and I had an absolutely amazing dinner experience. From start to finish, we were treated with the upmost class. Our servers Jason and Josh couldn’t of been more professional. Josh was very informative to explain the menu items, and his favorites. Julie had the filet and I had the cowboy ribeye. Sides were potato puree, carrots and the mushrooms. Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing. After our meal, we were going to walk back to the hotel, when it started to pour rain. The manager came over and offered to call us an Uber (the cabs were a 2 hour wait). She was very helpful and our Uber arrived in less than 5 minutes. If you have a chance to go to Prime & Proper, I HIGHLY RECCOMEND GOING. Thank you for an amazing experience, we will definately be back.!!
Top Tier. Period.
This is my second time in Detroit. I would have to say this had been some of the BEST food and the best dining experience yet. Let’s start with first impressions. My husband and I arrived a little bit prior to the restaurant opening in the freezing cold. Instead of having us stand outside shivering, we were quickly welcomed by an amazing gentleman Lawrence who opened the door for us and allowed us to come in and sit at the bar instead of waiting in the cold. That meant so much to me. We then had the most impeccable service by Jackie at the bar. She was the perfect dose of professional and friendly!!!! We had the hot dog duo, caviar, the fried chicken lobster (OMG!), we split a 20 oz top sirloin and had carrots and broccolini. Everything was absolutely exceptional. I mentioned to them my love for panna cotta and they brought us out two desserts on the house, which was totally unexpected and appreciated . We found out that Mr. Lawrence who let us in was actually one of the managers and he was absolutely one of the most friendliest gentleman we have met. I was so impressed with everything about this place that I want to go back today which is game day. I must also add that we went to another high-end state restaurant the night before and it did not even compare at all to Prime & Proper. If you’re looking for a fine dining experience that is far from stuffy and extremely personable with actual quality food that you’ll like I highly recommend this place. It will be our staple every time we return to Detroit. Thank you Jackie, Heather (who was gracious to kindly explain our caviar service ) & Lawrence for your above par service. The amazing food was just the icing to your exceptional attitudes.
A Great Experience
Excellent service. Very good food menu, wine list and cocktail menu. Everything beautifully presented. Two concerns: the music was too loud. We knew that, but unprompted the waitstaff apologized for it. Very pricey. Wouldn’t go except on an expense account.
Fine Steakhouse
This is a first rate steakhouse in the Capitol Park area of downtown Detroit. The food was terrific, and the drinks were strong and good. Service was slow on a busy night, but this was an excellent choice for dinner.
Valet at your own Risk!
Valet at YOUR own risk! I will try to make this short, but I want to give the details. I would have given a slightly higher rating because there were some good things about the experience but it's the "after" experience where the problem lies. Went to Prime + Proper for dinner at the end of July. Valet parked my car, thinking it was a wise decision, but it wasn't. At the end of August, I received a letter from the City of Detroit, to my surprise, it was a SECOND notice of a parking violation and I had seven days to pay it. (The first notice must have been left on my car that the valet either threw away or shoved in his pocket either way, I never received the first notice.) After paying $15 to $20 to valet and leaving a $5 tip, now I have a $65 ticket to pay and if I didn't pay it within 7 days I was at risk of one of the following. 1. A citation will be filed in court (Additional $30 court fees), 2. My vehicle booted or towed, or 3. My license to drive will be withheld. In total, to valet my car at Prime + Proper it cost me $85! After several calls to Prime + Proper I finally got through and spoke with Chad (a manager) who apologized but emphasized they use a third-party company and basically, there was nothing they could do. He said he would try to have the valet company reimburse me for the cost of the ticket and if Prime + Proper could do anything it would be to give me a $50 gift certificate to their restaurant. A few days later, I received an email from Prime + Proper apologizing profusely, making excuses that it was a third-party company etc. and they hope I understand. Well... I don't understand! They in fact, offered a $50 gift certificate to their restaurant which I have no desire to go back to and as I stated there is nothing I can do with a $50 gift certificate to their restaurant. I would spend well over that to recoup $65 for a ticket I received because of the valet company they partnered with...why would I or anyone want to patronize them with this type of service?!? Well...first, there is nothing you can get for $50 at Prime & Proper...maybe a drink. Secondly, I did not make reservations with the valet company. Third, we spent a LARGE amount of money at Prime + Proper and at the very least they should have simply reimbursed me $65 for the ticket. I don't even know the name of the valet company...but I know the name of Prime + Proper. As a business professional, I travel and if I did not receive that ticket in the mail and pay it within seven business days, my car could have been towed or booted and my license could have been suspended. This is completely unacceptable. I highly recommend that you do NOT waste your time or money going to Prime + Proper. The customer service is not what it should be. Valet at your own risk!
48th Anniversary dinner
We went for our anniversary. From the time we walked in until the time we left the experience was amazing. Matt, Megan and Jackie are very knowledgeable with the meats and the wines. They made our visit very special. Service was awesome. Steaks were good but a tad overdone. The manager did come by and offer new steaks or something else. They were still very good, so we finished them. Dessert and after dinner cocktail were on the house. Yes, it is slightly pricey but well worth it.
Doesn't get better.
Tried to go for an occasion and found it's booked months in advance. Plan ahead. Months ahead. Unless, sitting at the bar is okay. It definitely depends on your occasion. Going to a concert- the bar is great. Intimate dinner............plan months ahead
Go Big or Go Home. Food was Awesome. Money Well Spent For Fine Dining Experience! Redo.
First of all we would never… we’ll never bring all 5 Walton kids to eat here because they are expensive and we would probably be scrubbing plates! Just kidding, but seriously this was a great experience. This was a random. We decided to walk around downtown and whatever we saw that looked interesting… we would consider it. Even Prime+Proper. We knew we were in trouble when we looked at the menu and there were no prices! However, we made a decision right then. “Go Big or Go Home”. We went big! The chicken fried obster slapped hard, the lamb chops were delightful. The service was upscale and top notch. I also liked that for a Friday in busy downtown Detroit we waited only 20 minutes. Its pricey, but it’s fine dining. Would most definitely go back. Ask for Valencia! She’ll take care of you!
Excellent Food & Service
Our intention was only to stop here for a cocktail, but because of the excellent service and suggestions by Victor and Savannah, it turned into cocktails, wine, appetizers and dessert. The Griswold Smash and Windermere cocktails were excellent suggestions by Victor to go along with the Oysters and Roasted Bone Marrow. Savannah gave a great suggestion for a bottle of Red by Two2 as well. Throughout the early evening, the conversations with Victor and Savannah on the history of the restaurant, their meat selection process, and talking to the Sommelier made this a very enjoyable experience. This is a definite must stop and I'll be going back to try one of their fantastic meat entree options.
Great atmosphere GREAT food!! Will be back next time in
Great atmosphere GREAT food!! Will be back next time in town! I love Moscato wine and it's the best I've ever had ! The octopus was amazing so tender cooked perfect ! Never had bone marrow- it was tasty My son and husband had the steak. I did try a bite of each of their so tender cooked perfect! My son had three of the virgin drinks and they were amazing. My husband had the espresso martini. It was so good. We've had it at many places, but it's the best we've ever had. Will definitely be back!
Meh, for the price.
Drinks and service were fabulous but the food was meh. For the price we paid i guess we expected ………. Really, the steaks were just ok. Someone, other than our servers, came by and asked how everything was and we said “fine” because at that point we were pretty much done eating and it wasn’t terrible. We won’t ever return.

The food was decent a bit pricy but the food justified the cost. However, as a party of 5 we were there for nearly 4 hours!! The wait staff took forever. We waited 20-30 mins to get our drink order in. Then another 30-40 mins to order food. The food came out in a reasonable time but the wait staff just seemed to forget us and we had two servers working our table. Took another 30 mins to get the check and another 30 mins to process the credit cards then to add insult to injury we wait 25 mins for the valet and our cars were parked right out front. It wasn't overly busy so we were confused why it took so long for everything.
Very good steaks
Very nice restaurant and steak house Side dishes are to share. The meat is phenomenal in quality and on the spot prepared.
You want a power dinner? You go here.
You want an excellent date night. You go here. And every time you walk out you're happy you went. That's the definition of high level dining in my book, and they are simply the best in the city. Seafood here is always top notch. Options from oysters to branzino to lobster always deliver. Our most recent visit offered meaty east coast oysters and delicate west coast oysters, as we enjoyed our way through the menu. The chicken fried lobster was the talk of the table, as we paired champagne and drinks with steaks on a summer evening. Excellent seasoned zucchini and eggplant chips to start! The service is A+ as every member of the restaurant staff is friendly and welcoming. The wine sommelier stopped by the table and was a highlight of the evening, along with our server!
Worthy of its spot in the top 100 in the world
World best steaks.com has this place listed number 60 in the world and it’s worthy to be in top 100. Service, food, ambiance, etc was great. I made a day trip from Northern Ohio to this place. So worth it. Wife had filet and I had scallops. Both cooked perfect. Sides were great. Vanilla cheese cake is a must. Be ready to pay up. I saw some negative reviews. I don’t know what their problem is with this place

Prime + Proper is a delicious restaurant with a great atmosphere! Definitely one of the best restaurants in Detroit. Checking out for the perfect date night!
Have an issue and would like them to call me back -cannot get it to happen
I CANNOT get this restaurant to answer their phone!! I’ve called easily four days in a row promptly at five when they open. I’ve emailed them no response. I have an issue with the $300 gift card I purchased from them. Extremely frustrating. Seems like the easiest thing they could do.
The food and ambiance is unparalleled to any other
The food and ambiance is unparalleled to any other restaurant. The only thing that needs work is the staff. The hostess kept looking at one of our friends and looking them up and down. After her judging and seating us every time she would pass she would look at my friend and whip her long beaded ponytail with an attitude. We've never experienced this and not sure what the lady's problem was. The food was phenomenal though so that made up for it somewhat. The steak just melts in your mouth.

Came for my birthday dinner! The food is delicious per usual and the staff is always great and super attentive, we opted to sit outside because the weather was great. I had lamb chops, we also had chicken fried lobster as an amazing appetizer. If you're in Detroit visit!
Great Service Good Food.
Love the bar vibes. I will definitely be back! Love picking up meat and grilling at home!
This place is awful.
I still have not received a refund what they messed up from Mother's Day dinner. They should be embarrassed... Do not go here. They steal your money.
DISHONEST AND SHADY
They messed up my bill and it has been over a month. They still have not reimbursed me. Awful customer service and follow-up. They owe me roughly $200 of refund and I have yet to see it. I am getting no responses via email or follow-up via phone.
Subject: Disappointing Experience at Prime & Proper I feel
Subject: Disappointing Experience at Prime & Proper I feel compelled to share my recent dining experience at Prime & Proper with you, as it unfortunately fell far short of my expectations. I have been a patron of Prime & Proper for the past two years, and with each visit, my disappointment seems to grow. On my most recent visit, May 23rd, the decline in both service and food quality was unmistakable. Although I must commend Jason, our bartender, for his exceptional service, I cannot extend the same praise to the rest of the experience. My party and I encountered prolonged wait times and inaccuracies in our orders, which only added to our frustration. Despite ordering what should have been a culinary highlight, the Cowboy Ribeye, priced at a substantial $95, I was served a steak that was practically well-done, accompanied by undercooked and poorly prepared mushrooms. Regrettably, my friend's Whole Lobster Risotto fared no better, being excessively salted and lacking the expected refinement. While I appreciated the gesture of apology from Lawrence, the manager, and the complimentary appetizers and drinks offered to remedy the situation, I couldn't help but feel that such missteps are unacceptable given the premium price point and reputation of Prime & Proper. It pains me to say that I cannot justify returning to Prime & Proper in the foreseeable future. Even as someone who has previously recommended your establishment to friends and colleagues, I find it difficult to overlook the significant disparity between cost and quality that I experienced during this visit. Unless there are drastic improvements in both food quality and service, I regret to say that I will have to explore other dining options in downtown Detroit. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I sincerely hope that my feedback can contribute to the ongoing refinement of your establishment. Warm regards, David

Service was amazing! Unfortunately that is the end of the good part. My bone in NY strip was tough and not trimmed well. Still had connective tissue near the outer edge. It also tasted like a chemical liquid smoke was used. For the extreme prices, I expect better.
Great food and great service.
Beautiful restaurant highly recommend for a special night out or a corporate dinner.

A nice atmosphere especially when the weather is nice and the big windows are open, but it is very overpriced and the food, including the steak, is nothing amazing. This was my second trip and came away with the same feeling.
The food is good.
The prices are high. The service can be good but is inconsistent. Unfortunately after many visits my last was the worst. The waiters were poorly communicating with each other and forgetting about us. It was my birthday, which they did recognize but never brought any sort of dessert or celebration or sparkler to my table. It was sad to see as I watched many other tables around me get sparklers. This may sound ridiculous but there are many other attributes that add to the inconstancy of the night. Slow service (almost non existent), incorrect food received after long food wait times. Lastly, the wait to receive boxes, the check, and get it cashed it out was ridiculous. After emailing prime and proper about the experience they asked to hear more. I sent another email with much further detail and have received nothing in return. Sadly my money and birthday celebration choice felt very wasted that night. First experience to the last has been a downhill experience. I hope it gets better, it's really a cool place.
Unbelievable dining experience.
I couldn't find one thing wrong- the ambience, the service staff and management, the food and cocktails exceptional. Highly recommend the Tomahawk Ribeye Medium. Was amazing! Squash and burrata, the proper hash browns, pommes puree, broccolini, and gnocchi made excellent side dishes. Our service team was Claire and Christian and Michael the manager were so personable, professional and attributed to the enjoyment of this dining experience. Thank You!
Not a good experience
Newly opened black-owned restaurant. In their third week. Beautiful decor inside and out. Very bright, lots of artwork and charming. The servers all wear a uniform: dark trousers and a yellow jacket. Nice touch. The dining room was a bit too crowded for my liking. Too many tables. I would've preferred a little more space in between. I wasn't a fan of the hard chairs and very bright lighting in the dining area. Wouldn't be a restaurant I would recommend for intimate dining with your person or group. Service was very prompt. I felt a little rushed, but the servers seemed very happy and well versed on the menu. It may been a nice touch for the server to welcome me to their new restaurant. Menu. Very nice menu format. However, the menu was way too large compared to the size of the table. The drink menu was separate, but my recommendation would've been to have the food and drink menu together since the drink menu is not that extensive. Food. I must say for a new restaurant in this area, it was grossly overpriced at each category within the menu. My jerk chicken dish was over $40! It was full of good flavours, and accompanied by 3-4 small crepes that they recommended you fold over the chicken. Very similar to what other cultures do with roti or naan bread. I've had better jerk chicken just minutes away in the area for a lot less! However, it's not fair to compare and contrast pricing because the overall experience has to be factored in. And with that in mind, I conclude that the food pricing for the main dishes were $10-$20 overpriced. Drinks. Nice cocktail menu. Nice options. I ordered the Henny espresso martini. It was okay at best. Too much cream on top compared to the amount of liqueur, and did not fill the glass. I also ordered their version on a Moscow Mule (made with Mezcal tequila). This was made very well and tasted lovely. Dessert. No dessert menu. The server rattled off about 4-5 items. None of which were appealing, probably because he spoke too fast with no passion or conviction. Missed opportunity here to sell the desserts. No mention of after dinner drinks to round off. The check was paid electronically through a QR code. I would've preferred not to do this. It took away the personal service element. A 20% "service charge" was automatically added to the check. It would've been appropriate to let me know. I often feel service or tip fees have to be earned. When it is added up front, I question the desire they have to do a great job. I conclude to say, Prim and Proper is a beautiful restaurant, aesthetically. They are very new, and I'm sure they are still working through kinks, etc. I will give them that. The staff were all very nice. They offer valet parking, which is a nice touch, but there's plenty parking close by also. The food was just okay in my experience. Nothing to be impressed by, however, the presentation was very good. Food pricing was way too high on all levels and circumstances, as noted. I'm not sure if I would come back anytime soon, but I felt good knowing I was supporting a black-owned restaurant. I will always support my people. I am a little concerned that Prim and Proper may not be able to sustain a healthy and vibrant business long term based on my experience. I want the best for them moving forward. Just a few tweaks here and there to improve would be helpful.
the food was great.
The service was good. The waitress were nice. The dessert was amazing. Everything was amazing. They were very kind. Toris personalities were amazing. It was a good vibe and I love it.
Came in for a cocktail and they wouldn't let me sit down
Came in for a cocktail and they wouldn't let me sit down because my pants had a cuff at the bottom. Not trying to act bougie but I work for Gucci and was wearing it head to toe and they said there was no way for me to get a cocktail unless it was at the bar which had no seats. It's a 0/10 for me. From LA and not even those places do that. Bad for business. Wish I could rate the food and service since I host a popular food blog. They probably won't care

I ordered the $95 ribeye steak, mashed potatoes and I had a lemon drop. The food was delicious. Service was excellent and the lemon drops had me buzzing. I love this place it was an amazing experience. The servers were awesome. I'm definitely coming back.

Came here for my boys birthday ordered about 3 thousand worth of steaks that the waiter just randomly picked out for us and didn't ask us how we even wanted it cooked. Gave us all rare without asking at a steakhouse. Also put truffle on all our steaks without asking unacceptable service for a place that charges as much as them. Don't recommend.
Came here for a special occasion.
Was told by the servers that the meat was top quality and the seafood was fresh. Our meal was SO salty. Some of the food was served cold E-mailed the restaurant to provide feedback as our meal was over 400 dollars and we did not eat, never got a response back. Disappointing meal to say the least, and disappointing customer service. Would not return.
Fantastic date night out!!!
My boyfriend and I came here for a date night last week-end… amazing!!! We had Joe and Rick as our servers and I honestly haven’t had service like that in a DECADE. These guys were fabulous… so friendly and knowledgeable! Joe took us for a tour and explained all the cuts of meat to us and how they are stored. He also showed us the private event room and sexy cocktail lounge downstairs! Rick was so passionate as he explained the menu to us! I love these guys, for real. The food was SO damn good!! We killed every single plate that came to the table! The ambience was perfect and the whole night was just magic! We can’t wait to go again!! Way to GO Prime & Proper… you guys know what’s up! Thanks for a wonderful evening! :)
Food was really great.
My husband and I went on VDAY and menus was changed. They make a shorter menu during holidays which actually sucks because we both wanted something they took off the menu. Overall the experience as good. Food was still great.
Our reservations were at 9 we didn't get seated until 9:40.
The place was half empty. We got our entree at 11 when they were shutting off lights and basically closing the kitchen. The steak was extremely tough. I didn't want to complain or i would've been there for another hour. Would not recommend. Very slow staff and the over priced food was average at best.
Everything I had was good and I was impressed.
One of the first things I'll do is eat there again once I visit Detroit again
