My wife and I were visiting Chicago for a few days and were very excited to try Porto as she is Portuguese. The waiter from the beginning did say that the food was not necessarily based around the city of Porto but more the Northern Iberian Peninsula. What we didnt realize was that many of the dishes were "conserva" based, which is basically canned food. We did the tasting menu and the best thing I could really say is that is was all fine. Nothing was especially good or bad, a few days later I actually cant really remember any dish specifically.Usually when we do a tasting menu at a Michelin star restaurant we will also do the wine pairing, however in this case we just ordered a bottle instead. This might come across a such minor complaint, but not once during the course of the meal did the server or sommelier pour our wine. Normally I wouldnt care less about this, but it was symptomatic of the service for most of the night and absolutely not of Michelin Star quality. At one point my wife remarked that there seemed more staff than customers but everyone seemed like they were completely disorganized. We were sitting at the chef counter and there was zero interaction with any chef all night.Our server most of the evening was very obviously not used to working in fine dining restaurants. Someone else served us for our desert course and the difference was night and day. She went to the trouble to talk about the course and the chef etc. I think if she had served us all night our experience would have been completely different, but that being said the food still wasnt fantastic.We came away from there completely shocked that Porto has a Michelin star and would definitely not go back.
