Historic and fantastic steak at Peter Burger Steak House in Brooklyn
A friend recommended a historic steakhouse established in 1887, just four years after the Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883. Today, we decided to try it out, sharing a single steak, the Luger burger (a lunchtime exclusive), and some spinach. Surprisingly, the restaurant was about 90% full, even though it was a regular weekday! Impressed, my friend mentioned he plans to bring his father-in-law from California here. Our meal, including three shared dishes and tax, cost around USD 121 before tips.
Be the first to ReplyA superb meal, with superb service. We WILL go back!
Peter Lugar has been on my SOMEDAY list for at least 30 years. I'd heard good things about it, and on many trips to NYC (always Mid-town) it just seemed to be too far to go. We were in Williamsburg in February, so suddenly Peter Luger's was only a simple Uber away. I'd delighted that we went. This was a combined Birthday - Valentines Day dinner (not on the 14th, I'll add), we showed up at about 6 WITHOUT reservations and the line thru the door made me thing Oh Dear, I've goofed. No, I did not goof. We were seated within minutes and every aspect from then till we paid the bill and left was as perfect as a restaurant meal can be. We ordered the wedge salad, jumbo shrimp, German fried potatoes, creamed spinach and steak for two. (we were hungry when we arrived). We each had a cocktail too. Our server was helpful and attentive, but every person working there was attentive; if anyone was walking by and saw a partially full glass of water, we were refiled almost instantly. I can't remember better service at any restaurant anywhere! During the meal, I casually and quietly mentioned, when he was carving the porterhouse, "give her all the best pieces, it's her birthday". Note that the strip-steak side of the cut was superb too, and it is my favored cut; the tenderloin was even better. We were stuffed, (you saw what we ordered) and could not finish the steak. When I asked for a doggie bag, I mentioned "we really are taking the leftovers to friends who have a dog". When our doggie bags arrived, there was our remainder, and a bag "full of bones from the kitchen". Reuben the Dog thought he'd died and gone to heaven! When asked about dessert, we had to decline. (see "stuffed" above) Our server and many of the staff came out with a big bowl of Shlag (takes me back to Vienna) with a candle in it, and sang Happy Birthday! Did I mention BEST SERVICE? Peter Luger's is every bit as good, nay, BETTER than, any description I'd ever heard. DO make a reservation, though.

Coming our whole lives and still enjoying the atmosphere. Still a top steakhouse. The hamburgers are still one of the best around.
Be the first to ReplySchlag
My partner and I came for his birthday! I want to reiterate that it is much better to come with a reservation as the wait for a table during the weekend can be quite long, and reservations tend to go quickly. The bacon is barely smokey and a great texture to chew, but can be a bit oily. The steak for two is perfectly portioned and is served at the perfect temperature to eat, and you can even take the bone back with you upon request! We also had an apple strudel to share, which our waiter thoughtfully cut in half for us. The homemade schlag is also quite good - thicker in appearance than regular whipped cream, it retains all the same flavor while giving a unique aftertaste once you swallow. My partner liked it so much he ended up drowning his half of the strudel in it. The strudel itself is delightfully caramelized on top, giving it a great crunch to contrast with the softness of the interior. A bit pricey all in all but a wonderful meal regardless.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Lunch
Fantastic lunch in an iconic steakhouse! The food was fantastic, a particular mention for the excellent burger which is only available on the lunch menu. Very professional & friendly service too!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing!
I had known of Peter Luger for many years, but hadn't had a chance to visit the restaurant until this past summer. We came here on a weekday evening and it was busy, but we were able to be seated quickly. Our service was impeccable and our waiter was great from start to finish. We had a glass of wine and beer to start and it paired well with the complimentary bread (3 choices to choose from). Our porterhouse steak (steak for two) was absolutely amazing and was one of the best steaks we have ever had. We also loved the key lime pie with schlag and the schlag had such a great tasty and texture. It's a cash or debit only place, so plan accordingly, but it's a wonderful restaurant and it's so much fun to experience a bit of old New York.
Be the first to ReplySO SO.... Bottom of my list of places we ate at in NYC for a week.
Thank you for your time to read this. We went to dinner, had reservations at 8:45pm on 1/7/2024. #1 - Was seated about that time. #2 - Waiter came by, dropped off the menus and walked away. #3 - Waiter came back a few minutes later, asked what we wanted to drink and what did we want to order to eat...... (just the beginning of rushing our evening) #4 - Ordered drinks, told waiter that we were not ready to order meals yet (first time here) #5 - He came back, just a few minutes later without drinks and asked again if we were ready to order our meal...... Asked to give us a couple of more minutes..... He went and got our drinks and brought them to us.... #6 - We went ahead and ordered our appetizers and meal.... (we had probably been seated all of 5 minutes) #7 - They brought out our appetizers and meal all at the same time... Probably 5 minutes after we ordered..... (just feeling more rushed....) #8 - Appetizers were ok, steaks were so-so. #9 - Halfway through the meal, they brought the check...... #10 - Have had much better steaks for 1/2 the price. Have had much better service at places for 1/2 the price. Have had much better enjoyment of the meal and experience at other places for 1/2 the price...... My rating would have been much higher if the service would have been more relaxed.... Because, I knew what the price point was for this place. Spend good money, expect a good experience..... Sometimes, I feel I am treated better at a McDonalds than here. I won't even go down the road with my personal ability to put our a steak that people will never forget..... (we won 17th in the world at a Steak Cookoff Competition) We ate at nice restaurants across NYC/Brooklyn for our time there. This was bottom on the list.... Lesson learned.......

Steak and Fries would be my death row meal, so I thought what better occasion to pop my Peter Luger cherry than the beginning of my 28th trip around the sun. We could die any day, really. Everybody and their momma talks about Peter Luger. When you speak steak, you speak Peter Luger. It is the 4th most reviewed restaurant in NYC, and the most reviewed steakhouse. All this to say, I went in with high expectations, but how could I not? My 3 homies and I arrived at 8:15 for our res, but of course our big homie was 5 min late. You can't really chirp big bro lol y'all know how that is ahahah. I hadn't worn a suit in a MINUTE, so I thought I would throw one on as I felt this upscale Steakhouse called for it. I felt like Conor McGregor walking into T-Mobile Arena, or Frank Lucas at the Ali vs Frazier boxing match... but I wasn't wearing Chinchilla so I guess not ahahaha. When I entered, I immediately noticed 2 things: 1) I was WAY overdressed. Patrons in here were in hoodies and just plain T-shirts. Idk, this is probably a me thing or a factor of the times but I thought people would be DRIPPIN in here. Not even a little bit of a dress code? Idk I might just be trippin. 2) It was BRIGHT in here. I was expecting a dimly lit setting, but that was not the caseI felt way too seen. The menu is simple and straightforward, which you don't really see anymore so I loved that. We ordered the Caesar Salad, Thick Bacon, Porterhouse for 2, Rib Steak for 2, Fries, German Potatoes, and the Cream Spinach. At these prices, I was expecting to have a fun rapport with the server. Okay maybe a rapport is expecting too much, but at least a welcoming energy. He honestly could not have been more disinterested in us. The only time he seemed interested was when I asked for the check ahahaha bro pulled that thing out of his shirt pocket so quick and just stood there while I fished for my debit card. In contrast to the service, the food was fantastic. Everything from the bread to the bacon to the german potatoes to the steak was delicious. The porterhouse was the standout, as it came on a piping hot slanted plate and was perfectly charred on the outside with a beautiful red to pink interior. However, my jaw didn't drop. At a place with the reputation Peter Luger has, I desperately wanted my jaw to connect with the floor. But it just didn't. I have had better steak, and definitely better service, in the city. Off the top of my head Keens, Gallaghers, and Wolfgangs come to mind. Damn did you know Wolfgang Zwiener used to be a waiter here. The student really became the master... But I get it. They have such a big name that they don't even have to earn business anymore. Why put in the extra effort when customers will still come in no matter the service they provide. The crown is heavy. Maybe it's just a me thing. Expectations are the root of all heartache, and mine walking in were as exorbitant as the prices here. However, cracks in the foundation are beginning to show. That dude wrote the NYT article back in 2019 absolutely ripping them. They lost their Michelin star in 2022. The story of Icarus comes to mind, when he ignored Daedalusโs instructions not to fly too close to the sun, causing the beeswax in his wings to melt, and he fell from the sky as a result. Okay I'm getting dramatic now ahahahaha. 3.5 stars so will give 3 here and 4 on google. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__
Be the first to ReplyFantastic food - terribly dull & poor waiter service
I saw the restaurant on a Netflix program and looked like a fun place to go with great service, food and atmosphere. Well 1 out of 3 isn't bad I suppose. The food was really very good, steaks were as recommended the best I've had for a while. However the atmosphere was so dull it nearly put me to sleep and the top it all off the Waiter we had his name began with D, was exceptionally rude. It was like we were doing him / them a favour. When we paid the bill which was not cheap we left a tip respective of our service - well that was it. When when we asked for a copy of the receipt he didn't even turn around he just handed it to us. Not even a thankyou, a good bye or a wink of an eye, his back was facing us. Never again no matter how good the food was.
Be the first to ReplyDon't believe the hype
Don't believe the hype, the restaurant is riding on its historic success and feed Phil which is a lie. The staff are rude and argue with you, they don't accept cards and the steaks are way overpriced - you can get better from a supermarket.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best steak places in NY!
This steak house never disappoints you. This was our first time eating at the Brooklyn location. Make sure that you have reservations and we were seated less than 10 minutes upon our arrival. The steak was excellent as always. This time we tried the lamb chops, and it was one of the best tasting lamb chops! The ambience and the staff made it a great dining experience once again!
Be the first to ReplyGood meat but over rated
Overall good, but not what we expexted. The meat was good but the sides was not something extra. We had creamed spinach, Luger's Special German Fried Potatoes and steak for two. We really enjoyed the meat and it was fun to be there, but we would not go there again.

Perfect place to eat and drink good beer. The staff, especially the Polish employee who served us, was super friendly and available. The meat is really wonderful! Super recommended. ---------- Local perfeito para se comer e beber boa cerveja. O staff, especialmente o funcionรกrio polaco que nos atendeu era super simpรกtico e disponรญvel. A carne รฉ realmente maravilhosa! Super recomendado.
Be the first to ReplyStill my favourite
I've eaten at Peter Luger numerous times, a trip to New York City isn't complete for me until I've been. My usual order of steak for one (black & blue), German potatoes, creamed spinach & onion rings really hit the spot. The steak was just superb, cooked perfectly, juicy and packed with flavour. The spinach was better than I remember it being in the past and the German potatoes are a thing of beauty. Watch out for the onion rings though, the portion is massive! Over the years I've seen a change in the service, it used to be a bit gruff but the chap that served us was warm and welcoming. I'll keep coming back to Peter Luger, it's easily my favourite steam restaurant and quite possibly my absolute favourite restaurant. One change since my previous visit in 2009 is that they now take reservations online which is a bit plus! No more phoning up from abroad to book and no need to provide a US phone number which when you don't have one is a bit of a faff.
Be the first to ReplyI won't be returning!
I have waited for many years to finally go to Peter Luger Steak House after reading so much about it from various articles online. I brought two friends out to lunch from Connecticut. I drove 125 miles to get there. I ordered 3 Porterhouse steaks. When our order arrived, it was clear there were only two Porterhouse steaks there. Two bones equals two steaks. There is no getting around that. We were charged over $200.00 though for 3 steaks. The Waiter came up with something that made little sense. He also told me not to use the famous Peter Luger steak sauce on the steak but, only use it on the two slices of their thick bacon. He also asked me if he could have my gold chain on two separate occasions. He said afterward that he was only kidding. I felt very uncomfortable with that line of discourse. When I told him I couldn't eat anything for dessert, he actually patted my stomach very patronizingly and tried to get me to buy something. I was shocked. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to create a disturbance. I won't be returning. My two guests won't be returning either. We paid $365.00 for our meal. I expected to be treated in a professional manner and I expected to get what I paid for. I was ripped off at this steak house. Never again.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing experience
This is top shelf stellar service, bar non the food is broke the mouth we say here in Hawaii. Me and my wife went here after missions in Philippines itโs was truly a romantic place.
Be the first to ReplyWOW!! What a fantastic dining experience
We had a reservation at 7.15 but arrived early so we headed towards the bar and ordered cocktails and these cocktails, without doubt were the best we have had at restaurant, and they are huge,my Manhattan came in a glass the size of an Olympic swimming pool. At 7.15 we were seated at a window table in the second floor in a room full of windows. Our server, William, was professional, knowledgeable and very personal and helpful. We ordered the porterhouse for two, even though we were three adults, the meat came already sliced and cooked to perfection. As a side we ordered the cream spinach, to die for, the German potatoes andโฆ.the bacon, this is a must, unbelievable delish and the Peter Luger sauce which can be put on anything was the icing on the cake. For salad we ordered the beefsteak tomatoes with onions and the wedge: excellent. The dessert a strudel was equally delish. One word of caution: the portions are pretty big so if you are two of you, order as if you were one. Best steak house bar none.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced and underwhelming
Iโve had better food in economy class and better service at the DMV. Peter Lugers may have been a good restaurant a 100 years ago but itโs time has passed. The worst thing however is the price. You can eat at a 3 star restaurant for the same price. I have serious problems trusting the Michelin Guide after this experience.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced
A dinner for two at Peter Lugers was more like an almost raw steak for one. I normally go there twice a year and the steak was always delicious not any more. I will definitely not go back there ever again. Totally overpriced for the bad food they serve.
Be the first to ReplyMoney better spent elsewhere
Was so excited to go, but disappointed. Must still be open by reputation only. Food was good (not great) and service was fair at best. Gallagherโs in midtown is SO much better and still the same historic vibe.
Be the first to ReplyBest steak truly an icon
Skip all the major steakhouse in New York !! This is far the best steak . Crunchy and that bacon side is worth it .
Be the first to Replyan iconic institution.
great atmosphere. They say they have been serving steaks since 1887 and they have not redecorated since then! :) But you go for the steak and gruff service - terrific!
Be the first to ReplyPeter Lugers
The steak is great. Looks beautiful, Itโs expensive but you get what you pay for. Those potatoes that they alway talk about are to me not worth it. So is the spinach. The bacon is great. The desert is really good. Itโs worth going to. The service is good. The picture is a steak for three.
Be the first to ReplyNice meet but place can be better
We had a nice stay.
Place is expensive and popular so. Make sure you book.
Our steak was very good but the side dish spinach was not to our liking and we didnโt have to pay for it.
All portions are way to big
