What a treat to finally visit this restaurant! Finding ourselves unexpectedly at liberty for a birthday celebration, we first tried a couple of old favorites in Morro Bay. But Dorn's was closed for renovations, and the Bayside Cafe was as crowded as always. We decided to chance San Luis Obispo, and parked in the Palm Street parking garage, having had an issue with the new parking meters popping up everywhere!I spied the Hotel San Luis as we meandered down the stairs and the Ox + Anchor sign beckoned! It was a Sunday night, so no crowds, and we were warmly greeted by the maitre de as we entered. The soothing decor is uber hip, perhaps an homage to the architecture school at Cal Poly SLO.I was pleasantly surprised at our window table, and enjoyed perusing the menu, which seems to be a riff on a traditional steak house menu, but also featured salmon. And what is more traditionally American than a steak house? There are also some nods to the local in San Luis' original Chinatown in the menu, as well as the art on the walls.I noticed the egg rolls with two sauces, and ordered those right away. We got to order our salmon "medium" (it is a salmon steak, after all!), or however we wished it cooked. The sides are large portions, so we got the stuffed baked potatoes and the creamed spinach, along with some sour dough and focaccia bread. I accompanied my meal with Rusack Sauvignon Blanc, which turned out to be light and delightful. When the food came, it was a true epicurean experience. The egg rolls were rustic rolls, halved and stuffed with hen of the woods mushrooms and Mary's chicken. The dipping sauce added smoked pepper to the taste equation and rounded it out! The caramelized salmon steaks were a glossy hammered copper color, yet still moist and silky inside. The side dishe of ever-so-slightly bitter spinach with creamy sauce played well off the stuffed potatoes, which had the consistency of flan topped with caramelized onions. The tartness of the sour dough was set off by the rich butter that complemented the warm chunks of focaccia bread. We felt that we were in extremely good hands with our waiter Brian, whose advice was the epitome of skill and professionalism. He kept his eye on our dining progress and perfectly timed the meal to match our pace of enjoying it. His knowledge of the menu made it easy to order and enjoy the meal.We will definitely return for an encore of this superb dining experience...and next time we will bring friends!!
