A very special dinner
What a beautiful restaurant!!! And the staff couldnโt have been nicer or more professional! 4course dinner selections were excellent. Truly a very special occasion place

Wow! Wow! Wow! We celebrated here after eloping to NYC to get married. We couldnโt have chosen a better spot for dinner. From the minute you enter the restaurant you know its going to be a perfect experience. Staff were fabulous, attentive and always on hand. We ordered the 7 course tasting menu which was a delight - the food was delicious and presentation impeccable. Atmosphere was perfect, lighting was beautiful too. A truly remarkable place to dine for a special occasion.

I went for my sisters birthday hoping an extravagant event. The place looked nice from the outside but once inside you can tell by just checking the bathrooms, how unsanitary the restaurant is. My husband ordered a fish dish, and the fish delivered to him came out with white moldy fungus on it, covered in a white sauce.

Ambience, food and service were excellent. We sat upstairs where it was quiet and conducive for conversation. Staff efficient, polite and highly professional and efficient. We all had the 7 course tasting menu and were quite happy with the chef's choices. The amount of food for each course was enough and you were full by dessert time. It's nice to dine here during holiday season where the decorations were tastefully done, not too much, not too little.

The atmosphere is stunning, great ambiance. The food was very good. The snapper was good, the Burrata was fantastic! Best part of meal was the chocolate soufflรฉ. It was excellent. We really enjoyed our evening. Service was great. I just donโt think the price was worth all that though. Way too expensive. Fine if you have money to burn. Once was enough for me. But i did enjoy the evening.

Amazing food, wine and service in beautiful settings. Canโt recommend this restaurant highly enough. Everything about this restaurant is first class.
Be the first to ReplyGreat birthday dinner for fiancรฉ
I enjoyed my experience at one if by land. We celebrated my fiancรฉs birthday, and it was an amazing experience. Living in nyc my whole life, this restaurant has been on my list for quite some time. We finally made it there and it did not disappoint. I did not feel rushed during our four course tasting dinner. Our reservation was at 530 and we were finished around 9/930. It was quite an experience with excellent ambiance in a historical venue. Would love to return again for another special date.
Be the first to ReplyGreat hidden gem in New York
After exhausting all options for restaurant reservations, I found this place and decided to visit for my final dinner traveling to NYC. This place far exceeded my expectations. The building itself is very historical as it was once the carriage house for Aaron Burr (the VP under Hamilton). As soon as you walk in you see how the place is decorated. Tables in the restaurant had their own taper candle which you never see anymore. This creates a more romantic experience in my opinion. A lot of the old architecture has been keep and is real neat to look at. On to dinner. This place serves 2 options. One is a 4 course mean where you can choose what you want on a menu, or a 7 course pre fixe menu. I Opted for the 4 course menu. Dont let the prices scare you as the food is worth it. No matter what you choose for your 4 courses, you will enjoy every bit of it. The seared foigras was good and unique if you like that, otherwise there are different appetizers. For the main course, i would highly recommend the Beef wellington. I have eaten several others, but this one outshines any others i have eaten. Desert was included in the 4 courses. The deserts are great as they have different textures to complement the meal. For beverages, they have cocktails of your choosing, wines, desert wines. I had a Gin Martini with Monkey 47 which you dont see too often. They have a vast selection of wines to choose from, and full bottle service depending on what price point you want to be at.
Be the first to ReplyLovely atmosphereโฆtoo bad the food wasnโt itโs equal
Seriously, the atmosphere here is stunning. Very classic old world look. Amazing actually. Service was stellar. Ti was terrific and she took us around and showed us some of the history of the building. It was Aaron Burrโs carriage house for those not familiar. After the first course came too quickly we asked her to slow it down and she was all over it. Asked us when she should fire the next course. Couldnโt have been better. We chose the 4 course option vs the 7 course. The four course is $150 and the 7 course is $200. I am ok with the pricing if the value was there but it was not. We each started off with the foie gras which was perfectly cooked and delicious. Fabulous! Unfortunately this was the highlight. Next course was a beet salad and we also had the burrata with pesto and tomoto jame. Both were very tasty but the burrata wasnโt really burrata but more a mozzarella. Both good though. We then ordered the beef Wellington with a side of truffle mashed potatoes. Even though we ordered the Wellington medium rare it was more like medium and not super flavorful. Definitely were disappointed because that seemed to be the dish to order based on the server recommendations and other reviews. The truffle mashed potatoes were awful. Tasted like glue. Desserts were ok. Very expensive for the money. This was our most expensive dinner of our 6 night trip and definitely far from the best. Probably would rank it 4th out of 6. What really irked me too was the corkage fee. It was $100 which was more than any other restaurant we dined at. I have a problem with that given the quality of the food. Marea, for instance, which was fantastic in every aspect had a corkage of $75 which I thought was reasonable given the high quality of the food and atmosphere. Again, poor value.

This was one of the best fine dining experiences we've ever had! The service was impeccable, the food was very delicious. You definitely get an experience when you eat here and there is an added history component that adds to the experience.

I went there for my anniversary. I almost tripped on the stairs since it was really dark. We can the seven meal course and they just literally put the plate in front of us without even describing the food or the wine paring that goes with it until we asked the waiter what they are serving us. Our second course came - it was scallops - it had a big chunk of paper in it. Will I go back there again? no

Be the first to ReplyPhenomenal Food, Service and Ambience in an Iconic American Location
The room is charming and old fashioned lit by candles. Many attentive waiters make things move efficiently without feeling rushed. This is a first class operation. Iโve read other reviews here that complain about price, food quality, etc. With due respect, my dear colleagues should dine at local neighborhood spots to get wonderful prices and great mounds of food. Upscale tables may not be your thing. This is a 3 course prix fixe menu, $135 per person. - scallops, outstanding, nicely crusted. - foie gras with a buckwheat crepe, excellent - beef Wellington with subtle mushroom saucer, fabulous. - mashed potatoes with truffles are Michelin class. - lobster on risotto, tasty and tender. - chocolate trio dessert with caramel ice cream, awesome. - cocktails are amazing: pineapple with ginger and cayenne, and a Coupe dโAmour (raspberry and passion fruit with vodka), wow, flavor explosive. A must visit to see where American colonists and revolutionaries kept their horses and drank their beer.

Went here on a date night with the wife. One cool thing about the place is that there is no signs advertising the restaurant. It looks like an abandoned building, which added to the character. The service was Grade A. While the meals were enjoyable over all, I had the Rack of Lamb, you could tell the quality of the meat was there, and presented fantastically. When i ate it, it had ZERO taste. The appetizers and deserts were fantastic.

PROS Food is awesome, service is really nice. Environment is amazing and perfect for couples. Good wine list. Priced and deserved. CONS Not possible to select a-la-carte. Top 5 romantic restaurant in NYC. Recommended.
Be the first to ReplyWhat an experience!
What can I say? What an extraordinary experience! The wife and I came here to celebrate our anniversary, and it was the perfect place to do that. The service was impeccable and the food was next level. The lobster, Beef Wellington and foie gras were outstanding as were the desserts. I highly recommended this gem in the West Village.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed
This restaurant was highly recommended by a friend and the website shows an historic, charming, and intimate space. And that's accurate. The food was well prepared and the service was fine. But the more we thought about our experience, the more we thought the value for the money spent was just not there. Only prix fixe menus are available--no a la carte--so it costs a minimum of $250 for two just to walk in the door. The whole place seemed geared to extract the maximum amount of cost to the diner with the minimum amount of creative effort on the part of the restaurant. It wasn't bad at all--just not worth it.

We read the Zagat's reviews and they are dead on -- we sat upstairs with an overlook into the main dining area. The Beef Wellington is amazing.
Be the first to ReplyHorrible Valentine's Day Dinner
We had an unbelievably horrible experience at One If By Land Two If By Sea, this valentines day. Our reservation was at 10:30pm and we were treated like we were trash and offered the bottom of the barrel. Let's just say that they robbed every guest that came into the restaurant that night. Charging $350 for 6 courses and a wine pairing you were forced to order. Even the most exclusive restaurants in the world hardly charge that much and don't force you to order pairings. One of the upsets was that I do not drink and yet was going to be forced to pay for a wine pairing that I was not going to consume. Being offered juice as a substitute. The manager was rude and disrespectful, saying I could "take it or leave it", If I didn't want to be there. Explaining to me that this is the way they have done it for years and the price is "built from the cost of the food".....So then why are we forced to pay for the wine if the cost is based on the food?? Our server was confrontational and questioned us on why we asked for the manger, saying "so what did the manager say?" as if she needed confirmation that we were being unreasonable and she "told you so". I don't know any restaurant that robs their guests like this in the 20 years I have been in the industry. Typically how it works is you charge for the tasting menu and then an additional charge for wine pairing if the guest would like to participate. The worst part about the experience wasn't the price or forcing us to pay for an unused wine pairing. The worse part about the dinner was the food. The first course was a dried up spoon full of overcooked risotto, with a frozen lobster claw (couldn't even serve a lobster body at that price?) and was served with the cartilage still in it. The lobster was topped with a tablespoon of lobster bisque and one tiny piece of heat lamp, dried up truffle that had been sitting on the pass all night. We reluctantly eat it and went on to the next course, trying to give them a dying chance to make up for the "warm welcome". The next course was even worse. A piece of oxidized foie gras, that had been left in the pan to long and a pan that was too hot and caught fire. The foie was like slime and tasted of nickel and gas. This was sitting next to a cold, folded crape that was soaked in foie fat and sitting next to a pansy flower. Let's just say the dish was inedible. We informed our server and she proceeded to remove the dish and told us "let's just start over and pretend there is a new chef back there". We were reset and she quickly brought back the lobster dish, the first dish we had...this time a much larger portion and still with cartilage and dried truffles. At this point we were in complete shock of the overall experience and extremely upset. We were ready to leave. We gathered our things, got up and headed to the bar to wait for the manager. The manager and server were cold and non emotional when we told them we were leaving. Making us feel like it was our fault that we had this dreadful experience. The manager proceeded to say sorry and that he would love it if we would "continue" at the bar. We couldn't believe it. He was so desperate for money he actually asked us to stay and buy drinks. In all my time in the hospitality industry I have never been a part of such a scam and down right disrespectful and humiliating experience. We will never be back and we will share our experience with anyone who will listen. This restaurant should be ashamed of themselves, ownership, management and especially the chef. You are disrespecting industry shamefully trying to make a buck. The last guest that walks into your restaurant should have the same exact experience as the first guest. You should never miss a beat, differentiating between "service" and true hospitality. You are an iconic restaurant, one that I was taught about in the beginning of my career. I was so excited to finally dine with you and to be so utterly disrespected and severed food of that quality makes me question where this industry is headed. Desperately trying to hang on to any last thread of hope in scamming and forcing guests out of their hard earned money. Pathetic

Elegant Dining
My wife and I have dined at One if by Land multiple times and it is always an exceptional evening. The building was the carriage house of Aaron Burr. The multi floored space is beautifully restored and is one of the most romantic restaurants anywhere. The two dining options are a 7 course tasting menu, with or without wine pairings or a 3 course prix fixe. We chose the 3 course option. We began with the seared sea scallops and the fusilli calabrese for appetizers. Both were delicious. For entrees the beef wellington, a house specialty and venison in a creme de cassis sauce. Both were tender, juicy and cooked perfectly. For dessert a chocolate souffle and a cappucino chocolate tart. Service is impeccable and the food is outstanding. One if by Land is a destination restaurant that you must give a try.
Be the first to ReplyHighly recommend for the experience
Great atmosphere, good food, beautiful place and amazing history. Definitely a date or special occasion night. Sitting by the fireplace, cocktail in hand, listening to the live piano music is special on its own. But having dinner in the main room, by the window is something else. Good was not top notch. But the overall experience was worth the money and time to get a table.
Be the first to ReplyStill good but definitely now overpriced
Have been coming here since the 1980s and it is still a lovely venue with very good food and service (which I previously would have rated as excellent) but is not quite to the level it used to be despite the increase in prices ... so now feels a bit overpriced. Small side dishes are $15 each, for example, and there are no wines for less than about $75/bottle. I can't say I didn't enjoy it or would no longer recomment it, but with so many other options in NYC (including in this area) I'm sad to say that after many years of coming back here from time to time, I think I'll try my luck elsewhere if/when I want to spend this kind of money on a meal in the future.

My wife and I went to One If By Landโฆ for our 30th anniversary. I had been there in the 1980s but it was my wifeโs first experience. To say it did not disappoint is a major understatement. The candlelit setting could not be more romantic. We each got the tasting menu and every course was a hit. The scallop, beef Wellington and chocolate soufflรฉ dessert courses were particularly delicious. The service was impeccable, friendly and understated.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food with impeccable service with an extremely romantic vibe
The atmosphere is extremely romantic - dim lighting with lots of candles. The food was quite good and came out very hot and in a timely fashion. Finally, the service was impeccable. The staff was able to walk the perfect line of attentive without being overbearing. We each had a three course meal with a bottle of wine, after dinner coffee, and after dinner cocktail. We will absolutely be returning for another date night.
