Memorable but pricey dining experience
It was exciting to experience No Relation's omakase which took sushi to an entirely more elevated plane for the two of us. Most of the fish had been sourced from Japan, though there were also others from North America and Europe among the 14 courses. Many of the options were unusual, such as barracuda and several forms of tuna, and all were delicious. After quite a few single units of fish, the last two courses were a tuna tartare (to which for a price you could add uni, or two kinds of caviar) and a pretty bland custard with crabmeat. The restaurant seats seven diners and we had a lot of trouble finding it. There is a small sign on the building for a restaurant whose name I forget, you enter the building, head downstairs and pass through a noisy speakeasy-type venue to reach the entirely serene No Relation sushi bar. We were lost and tried to phone for directions, but could only get voicemail, which was frustrating. Service is attentive, though seemed to be more so if you purchased the more expensive of two sake flights. It had a formality which reminds me of classic French restaurants decades ago. You get one sake for each of five or six groupings of menu items. It was thoughtful that your cup could be refilled once for each sake you had. The amiable chef explained each dish earnestly, though he was not always easy to understand. Quibbles notwithstanding, this is a spectacular dining experience and one we will long remember. Do note that the meal is expensive to begin with and requires payment in advance, and the alcohol and other add-ons when you dine can double the price.

Always an incredible experience to come here for dinner. The fish is incredibly fresh, the flavor combinations are uniquely delicious, and the atmosphere makes you completely forget you're in a basement in the South End. The current sommelier, Ada, is super knowledgeable about all of the wine and sake offerings and has an impeccable sense of customers' preference to recommend the perfect pairing(s) during the meal. My wife and I cannot wait to go back!

Having been to OYA a year earlier I was excited to eat here too. It was a surprise as my son brought me to a restaurants/bar and “No Relation” was hidden. It wasn’t until the hostess was seating us did I realize there was a hidden restaurant within the restaurant. Each of the 20+ courses was presented in a way that I understood what I was eating and where the fish was from. I had a sake flight that was presented the same way. A fantastic experience and all courses were excellent. The extras after the main courses were also excellent. You aren’t here to be cheap - go for it! It’s worth every dollar.

They are very different restaurants and Oya is outstanding, but NR delivered a memorable sushi experience for Omakase purists. It would be hard to get better quality and variety of sushi easily. While reservations were hard to get due to the small size of the place, but well worth the effort for a unique and exclusive experience. The place is very relaxed and friendly, with two chefs taking the 8 diners through each of 14 courses. The senior chef describes each course, the fish and its source, as well as how best to eat it. Each course is outstanding. Diners have the option to order second rounds of the courses they preferred at the end of the set courses. We reordered several with the Wagyu beef more than once. While sushi is now popularised and hence a wide range of quality and price is available but this is what sushi seems all about. It is very difficult to imagine returning to wasabi and soy drenched, beyond its shelf life sushi after experiencing this. Highly recommended.

My wife and i had the 14 course Omakase at No Relation and were very impressed. The atmosphere is fun and unpretentious, the staff are great, and the food was truly excellent. The price felt fair for what was included, and the ability to order more of any item, as well as some a la cart specials after the meal was nice (Get the A5 Wagyu!)

This was an interesting experience. Nice atmosphere. Watching the chef prepare sushi was entertaining. There are 14 courses, 12 of which consist of one piece of sushi. Some were excellent, some good. Glad I went once but don’t think I’ll go back.

The No Relation is a tiny intimate gem hidden in the back of a very noisy restaurant. The restaurant can only accommodate 10 people with two sitting; one at 6:00pm and other at 8pm.You have to made reservation and pay ahead of the time. We had a tasting menu which was consist of 14 sushi. The sushi was fresh, tasty and very creatively prepared. If you like sushi I am sure you will like this place.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent and intimate omakase experience
I heard about No Relation, a secret omakase sushi restaurant in the back of a basement tiki bar, from a couple of out of town chefs who were sitting next to me at the counter at Saltie Girl. As a solo diner, I was able to snag a seat (out of 9) at one of the two seatings the next evening. I am glad that I did. I sat between two groups of friends, who, together with the small staff (the sushi chef, his assistant, and a friendly hostess) all made me feel welcome, as though I was at a dinner party at someone's home. Someone who happened to be a kickass sushi chef. The nigiri and sashimi were of excellent quality and expertly prepared. It was fun bantering with the restaurant team and enjoying how they worked. There was more than enough time to enjoy our meals before the seating was over. No Relation is an expensive night out, especially if you start adding on to the set meal, which is difficult to resist once you are there. But it is special. And you can add to your fun by having a drink at the tiki bar on your way in or out (or both), which is a whole other scene.

Top notch. Well worth the spend and the prebooking efforts. Chef Lynch crushes an Omakase. Service was attentive, but not overwhelming. Just right. Food was 5 stars. Best Uni I have ever had.
