Disappointed with their staff attitude & price hike on re-visits
A very British style Indian restaurant with nice collection of art pieces on the wall. Besides, they have rich collection of special gin tonics too. Food was very good & never too spicy but rich in flavours. Amongst the dishes we’ve ordered, we particularly liked the tandoori lamb racks which was well marinated, succulent & perfectly cooked. Samosa was also very good, smooth with crunchy texture, rich flavours with refreshing acidity. Services were warm & good too. If there is one thing to criticise: dishes do not come cheap!
Visited the restaurant again given the very attractive dishes being executed but discovered prices went up by significant percentage. Quality still superb. Other than the high price tags, I was disappointed with their white guy staff who was snobbish & impolite after learning that we’re not ordering wines, which was totally unacceptable for prices they charged. Hence one star removed!
I love the tandoori!
Located in Wyndham Street, this Indian restaurant is part of the Black Sheep Group, the most personal project of the owner Syed Asim Hussain who came from Punjab. Awarded Michelin one-star in 2019, the restaurant is renowned for its tandoor bringing traditional flavours to diners.
The restaurant is quite small, with leather booth seating on both sides and tables in the middle. The décor design has a post-colonial theme, contrasted by the contemporary paintings on the walls, created a cozy and relaxing ambience.
Ordering a glass of Cava ($138) to start, we were provided an appetizer Phalli. The roasted peanuts were very good, with many spices to give a nice kick but not overpowering. The lime juice added refreshing acidity which made it difficult to stop eating.
We had Murgh Methi Tikka ($218) to start. The marinated three yellow chicken breast came from local farms, grilled nicely and the meat was juicy and tender. On the side was dressed poona onions, which helped to balance with crunchy and cleansing flavours. The methi sauce was also a perfect companion to the chicken breast. A really good appetizer.
The main appeal was the tandoor, and we chose Tandoori Cobia ($428). The line-caught cobia came from South China Sea, with really nice marinade to give a charred skin, flaky and tender flesh, full of flavours. The portion was also big with the two fillets both large. On the side was smoked tomberries and sapphire chutney which added further complexity in taste. Another great dish.
Tandoori Gobhi ($338) was another tandoor dish we had. The cauliflower was grilled and accompanied with spiced lentil chutney, and was a great alternative for meat, with the flavours nothing inferior.
Wrapping up we had Butter Naan ($88), which was of fluffier texture than naan I had eaten in other restaurants. The buttery note was appealing too.
Even though we were full, there was room for dessert and we opted for Sticky Toffee Pudding ($158). The pudding was served with a popcorn ice-cream on top, and then the hot toffee sauce was poured over. Very sweet in taste, the contrast of the warm pudding and the cold ice-cream was interesting, and the toffee sauce added further flavours. A satisfactory finale to the meal.
Service was very good with the staff friendly and explained to us the full menu at the beginning, and when each dish was served there was also brief introduction. The bill was $1,816 which considering the overall experience, food and quality, was very reasonable.
Great food & service
Without a doubt, New Punjab Club is Black Sheep's most accomplished venture to date. With theatrics, service, ambience and food combining to present one uniform experience, it can be said that this really is more than just a meal.
Rather than offering an endless array of multi-coloured curries, the menu rigidly adheres to the authentic food of the region, with the tandoor ovens as the star of the kitchen adding smoke, depth and aroma to the heavily spiced meats on the menu. The Tandoori Lamb deserves a special mention as a true star of the show; thuggishly meaty with the bone precisely trimmed, it possesses a wonderful depth of flavour.
Whilst there is a decent drinks menu, there is specific coverage for the G&T with all varieties accompanied by their paired botanicals served on a trolley. It makes re-ordering only too easy.
The premises itself is small with booths lining the wall directed at single tables in the middle. This creates an intimate atmosphere but one which can also border on the cramped side. The decorations deserve a special mention with outstanding artworks on the walls depicting Punjab in various mediums.
Sometimes the service feels unfocused, as though the waiters are a bit jaded from repeating their lines too often. And there are no specials on the menu, which suggests a kitchen that is template bound, shy of taking risks.
Value for money is slightly skewed with the bill comfortably going north of HKD2,500 for a couple - punchy for an upmarket curry house (albeit a damn good one!).
Excellent lamb tandoori and milk buns curry
New Punjab Club is a very small restaurant. It got 1 star this year, this restaurant is clean and service is attentive. Around HKD700 per person without alcohol. My favorite dish is Curry with milk buns and Tandoori Lamb. I tried curry chicken which is very average as the chicken is not fresh and tasteless. Garlic Naan bread is below average, mango drink is not yum, desert is not nice too. So just come for the yummy tandoori and milk bun is what I recommend.

Be the first to ReplyIncredible and worth the Michelin star!!
I heard good things about this restaurant so I decided to go verify that and... What a good idea!
It was such an amazing experience: the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly + the vibe of the place is very different than most restaurants you can find in HK.
I loved the Gin-Tonic menu and trolley: ordered the Rangpur and had a table show for the drink (pretty cool not gonna lie)
I don’t even know what to say about the food, everything was perfect and so so tasty really...
When you go there make sure you follow the staff recommendations, it’s worth it.
Ps: my absolute favorites were the keema pau and the Tomahawk lambchops coming magically out of the tandoor. By far the best lamb I’ve eaten in my life.
I’m gonna come back to try the other tandoori dishes for sure!
Declining food standards
Starters were excellent had the lamb and chatt. Lamb tomahawk has gone from the menu now just lamb chops. Mains were disappointing butter chicken sauce was excellent but they used breast meat which was dry. Chicken was not properly cooked into the sauce the meat was white all the way through. There are different cooking methods but I prefer the meat to be cooked in the sauce for a longtime so it absorbs the flavour perhaps using the bhuna method. Dahl was equally disappointing yes there are different styles this one was thin and watery with little texture or flavour Thus is my second visit and seem to recall it being much better than before. Overall at this price point just about acceptable

Lively atmosphere with nice Indian music playing on a decent sound system. Fantastic food! It was very fresh and flavorful. We could tell it was just made for us. A little slow, but worth the wait. Yum!
