Mohonk Mountain House New Paltz Reviews from The Last Year
Mohonk's guest relations manager Brian, had such an
Mohonk's guest relations manager Brian, had such an egregiously low EQ and atrocious attitude that it is simply appalling he works in hospitality. My family and I have visited Mohonk before and always had a wonderful time. It was for this reason that my brother chose to plan his surprise proposal there for his girlfriend. On the day of 5/19, we had explicit instructions to meet Diane at noon to walk through the path, 90 minutes before the surprise was supposed to take place. However, when we showed up at 12 sharp, no one could find her. Alec Golden, a nearby employee, helped us look for her for 17 min. After 27 min, it was communicated that Diane would no longer be available for us, AT ALL. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. I've now learned Mohonk operates under this motto. Hearing the news on Diane not showing up and that no one else had any of the notes my brother worked on with Regina, my dad asked to talk to the manager. Brian from the very beginning trudged his feet on the floor, looking acutely annoyed as if he would rather be any other place in the world than with us, even before anyone spoke a single word. My dad tried to explain the situation and communicate how upsetting this entire thing has been on supposedly one of the happiest family days, and Brian would not even listen, just kept interrupting my dad to haphazardly say "ok so how can I help" like a painful and overpriced broken record. My dad again tried to start from the beginning, and Brian switched his nauseating loop to say " so it's only a couple minutes past, what's the problem? Diane has very important guests that she had to tend to " which means to me that (1) somehow 30 minutes has become "a couple", (2) my time is not valued and (3) we are not "important guests". Then he looped back to "OK so, how can I help" This is unacceptable for 2 reasons. 1. You don't ask a customer how to solve the problem that you caused; you bring your expertise to the table and you debug. 2. As a manager, you take responsibility for your team's mistakes. Artificial apologies without fixed behavior is called manipulation. "I'm sorry BUT" is called an excuse. - In the hospitality industry, I expected a very basic minimum bar be not only reached, but surpassed. With Brian, there was 0 heart, accountability for his job, integrity, collaboration, or basic human kindness. On top of all this, Brian never made eye contact with either of my parents or expressed any sort of genuine remorse for putting us through this ordeal, and then when my mom was in the middle of her sentence, he started walking away. I even tried smoothing things out to tell him "hey, this is a really stressful situation, I'm sorry if my parents voices are raised but you have to understand how big of a day this is for us, and we don't want to ruin my brother's surprise by being on the hiking path when they check in". I know with 100% certainty that I held a respectful tone, and level volume. Even then, it did not change his aggravated and extremely rude demeanor. Alec who ironically is relatively new working at Mohonk, was the only one that showed empathy. Understanding how stressed and upset everyone was, he sprung into action, becoming the singular reason the proposal was saved. He read the documentation my brother sent us, quickly got up to speed, and physically walked with us to the path identifying new hiding spots to optimize around viewpoints and consideration for my mom and my brother's girlfriend's mom being in their 60s. HE was the epitome of care, de-escalation, proactivity, and execution that I would've expected Mohonk to employ as a gold standard, the shining light of the day. It is frustrating and absolutely heartbreaking to see my parents be bullied by such a small, ignorant man as Brian, who is supposedly representing a venue as nice as Mohonk. I sincerely hope Mohonk deeply reflects on its identity to evaluate the quality of service they provide. 1 poisonous individual is the most infectious virus, as the chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

How a manager at Mohonk Mountain House, ruined our day with his rude manner and arrogance A warning to anyone who wants to visit this place and expects decent customer service What happened * My son and his girlfriend decided to visit Mohonk Mountain House for a date. My son also planned his proposal during this trip, he booked a dinner event and worked with an event planner for the proposal ideas. The event planner was very helpful. * The issue happened when we arrived in the morning, we were greeted properly but the assigned person (Diane) who was supposed to help us with the proposal setup was not there, after 30 min searching, we were told Diane was not available and there was no backup plan. Well, that's a shock with only less than 90 min to the planned proposal time. So, we called for the manager's help. This kind of outage was totally not acceptable and Diane is not a reliable professional (or even qualified as the professional). * Brian who claimed to be the manager showed up. He looked at us with disdain and he had no idea what's going on and no patience to listen to our story. He apologized but no eye contact with an arrogant look like "why are you guys bothering me". * He then made a few useless comments but was still not willing to patiently listen to us as every time we started the conversation, he became very defensive, and he'd interrupted us to tell us we were not right and repeated saying "how I can help". Well, that's exactly what we wanted to tell him the whole story and the plan if he just kept his mouth shut and listened. The worst came when my wife made her attempt to tell Brian the plan and Brian's face turned very annoyed because by then he probably couldn't figure out how to help us and he could not think of any good excuses not to help us. Then he just walked away when my wife was still talking to him. Really? Is this Mohonk's new standard for customer service? Brian was not just arrogant, he was also very rude to a lady. * While Brian was gone, another nearby hotel guy Alec stepped in as he saw our frustration and offered his help, he put on a nice smile and very patiently listened to our story and the plan and walked with us to the planned proposal path. Alec then helped us with the photo spots and hiding spots and also volunteered to stay with us the entire time to help. Alec was super helpful and he really saved this important event! The evening dinner was also good. Mohonk is a nice place for events and most people are nice and great, but we know one bad apple spoils the bunch and Brian is one big bad apple, Brian must be removed if Mohonk wants to continue offering their premium event venue and services as Brian's clueless, helpless, rude and arrogant personality has no place in the Hospitality industry (or any industries).

Excellent but could be better
We had a wonderful few days together here. It's been on our bucket list for many years. However there were a few minor issues that I didn't expect at a top class resort. The first night our room was very warm. The cooling didn't work, so we slept badly. When I reported it, it turned out that the cooling valve was closed. Also the shower was lukewarm. This was fixed. The website and menu had typos on them. Website was fixed after I reported it. Exercise and yoga classes were supposed to be 45 minutes but one was 35 and two yoga classes were overlong. The cheese board claimed local cheeses, but they served a cheese described as Oregon Blue. Also, one night the waitress didn't know what cheeses were on the cheese board. Minor complaints during a delightful stay. I hope you can use this feedback to perfect your visitor's experience.
Anniversary getaway
Mohonk is a special place that has never disappointed. We've always had a great time each time we have visited. We have fond memories of our stays at Mohonk.
Mohonk Mountain Resort…it is so worth it.
We love Mohonk. We go for one night several times during the year. There is so much to do that we arrive early on day one and leave late on day two. The 9 hole golf course is fantastic and included with your stay. We always play 18 each day. The indoor pool is divine with adult lanes for serious swimming. My husband naps on the lounge chair while I do an hour of laps. The food at the resort is exceptional with a variety of choices and dietary options.
Fans for Life!
We cannot possibly say enough wonderful things about Mohonk. I've been going since I was a child with my family and now my husband and I enjoy every trip we take there. Daryl at the front desk is incredible, thoughtful, caring and detail oriented. He exemplifies the Mohonk spirit we love so much. We also are always grateful to Jamaal and the team in the Dining Room for making magic happen each meal time. Always a delight. This past trip we enjoyed fishing, archery, hiking and of course, the guided tours of the house itself. Will be back soon!
Great Place, Great Staff
Great Place, Great Staff! April 2024 If you are considering a visit to Mohonk Mountain House I recommend you stop thinking about it and go! The place is beautiful, the food is excellent and the room was lovely. The best part was the truly awesome staff. We visited from April 15-17 and found every single person we encountered to be very pleasant and helpful A special thank you to Daryl at the front desk who provided exceptional customer service, In the dinning room we were greeted at every meal by Jamaal who made us feel so welcome and special. We ate every meal at the same table “Orchid 2 "The servers while always different at each meal all provided excellent, helpful and attentive service. They should be commended for a great job! We visited the greenhouse and met the manager. He was friendly and informative we appreciated him taking the time to speak to us. . Merhert in the gift shop provided another example of great customer service. The entire gift shop team were lovely. Every member of the hotel staff deserves a special thank you for making our stay one to remember. Looking forward to a return visit. Read less
This is such a unique property.
I was only there a couple of hours for a work meeting and everyone I interacted with were very nice. I for sure would like to come back and take advantage of this stunning place. There is a gate you have to go through to enter and you're not allowed on property unless you are a guest there.
Lovely, but LOTS of FAMILIES
We had a really lovely time at Mohonk Mountain House. It is so nice to wander and feel taken of and not worry about cooking or restaurant reservations (when you stay you do have to reserve a time to show up for dinner). We stayed mid week and were able to get a significant discount. Our total for two nights was around $1700. We each had 2 spa treatments they each run about $215. Some of the more desirable hikes were closed for icy conditions- but luckily there are plenty of trails. Our room was sweet and small with a fireplace (King with lake view). We had a lovely small balcony with 2 rocking chairs and a great view. We ordered wood from the front desk and had a little fire going one night. Our food at dinner very good. The Halibut was excellent. Lunch is a buffet style with many options and just okay. We might have picked the wrong week to go- there were SO MANY families. It made what I hoped for a romantic a very different experience. Kids were for the most part just being kids- but I looked forward to a more refined experience at dinner (was told men had to wear collared shirts). One teenager wore an old baggy tshirt and too huge sweat pants. At one table a little girl was watching her iPad and singing and dancing (in place- not disruptive) and these made the atmosphere feel more chucky cheese than $$$$ a night mountain resort. Kids Rand down the hallway (there is one sign by the lobby elevator that asks children not to run down the hallways). I was awoken at 7am by a crying baby. We still had a great time- we just adjusted our expectations. I am sure it is not possible, for business/financial reasons, but Mohonk would be perfect if they offered a “couples week”- or an adults only few weeks of the year.
Lemme preface this review: ya girl balls on a major budget.
I truly hope one day I'll be able to afford an actual overnight stay here because it's absolutely on my bucket list. It if you're like me, and are in need of a change of scenery, some R&R, and a quick little day trip - this is just the spot. An easy two-hour ride from LI. I got the spa daycation pass which included a spa service, two-course meal at the carriage house (serving sizes are MASSIVE and they can't store leftovers and since I didn't have a room with a fridge to keep things cold, I had to leave half my lunch which was a bummer because the pizza was delish, so if you're traveling solo like me - keep that in mind), access to the spa (sauna, steam room, pool, and outdoor mineral spa - aka hot tub), and the ability to hike the grounds. I was also able to grab some complimentary coffee and breakfast in the Lake Lounge upon arrival. The spa opens at 8, so I got there right at that time even though my service wasn't until 1:30 (which changed to 4:30 because someone called out) - so that I could enjoy all the amenities. You're given a locker, slippers, and robe for the spa/pool and can come & go as you please in that area. Jen and Tiffany in the spa were fabulous. Tiffany did my winter warp wrap and it was so luxurious and a little bit of everything! Mohonk - if you're reading this and ever want to gift someone who would absolutely appreciate an overnight stay, I'll gladly accept! ;-)
Still Great, but I Miss the Dinner Buffet
We hadn't been back to Mohonk since pre-covid times, and it's great to see that they are continuing to upgrade their slightly aging facilities -- A great stay is getting better, and their post-covid traffic seems to sustain their renovations. One downer however: Be aware that they've ended their dinner buffet and aren't doing a great job shoe-horning their new menu-order format into their traditional regimen of reserved-seating. Maybe they'll loosen up the 90-minute seating-window someday.
This was honestly the biggest ripoff ever.
The word here is "EXTRA". It is a problem that plagues the so-called all inclusive places. Anything you actually want to do is probably extra and the extra is also additionally taxed. Not for me. I don't mind spending money on a really amazing place, but this is simply not my idea of amazing.
Excellent getaway, great service!
We had an excellent relaxing stay. Rooms are kind of old fashioned but everything works very well and our bed was comfortable. Food is amazing and all included in the price. We made use of the spa, and had yoga and meditation classes which were great. We also hiked the beautiful grounds. But the service from all staff is outstanding, and that makes the difference here. Yes, this place is expensive but if you can afford it you will have a GREAT getaway. We will be back here at some point.
The perfect all-inclusive getaway, right in our “backyard”!
We took our family to Mohonk Mountain House for spring break. This place was amazing! Davida, from the call center, was so nice and helpful in booking us for a last minute getaway. We were very happy with the accommodations and service was top notch! The grounds are also very beautiful. No matter what time of year you stay at Mohonk Mountain House, there are so many indoor and outdoor activities, as well as an amazing amount of food to keep all the humans happy. The best part is that it is all-inclusive!
Spent three nights and a first time trip.
Been wanting to visit for years and glad we did. The staff was all extremely accommodating and went above and beyond for us. We extremely enjoyed those working the restaurant. They were all so polite and very personable to ensure you enjoyed your experience. The grounds are breathtaking and the house has classic charm for all to enjoy. We will definitely be returning during another season to enjoy the activities planned.
Mohank Review
Amazing scenery, unlimited food! Farm to table selection was excellent! My daughter (we were there for her bday) loved it! Friendly staff, great activities. The yoga class was so relaxing. I met someone who was there three times before and we are definitely going back. Advise-book spa before you go there. Something’s were already booked.
The hike is amazing!
Beautiful location in an amazing environment. The personnel was excellent—polite, effective, and accommodating. I got a peaceful room with a lake view. Although the meal is ordinary and unremarkable, overall it was a really memorable experience.
Relax and recharge in a serene oasis
I'm reluctant to write this because I would love to keep this gem a secret but their service and facilities are so consistently wonderful that feel I owe the family and staff a review. Bravo for doing an amazing job, for keeping a historic property in pristine condition, and for maintaining an oasis of calm in a world that is increasingly chaotic. I wish they needed an in-house eye doctor because I would live there in a heartbeat.
There is a schism in what they’re trying to be
This is not my first stay at a high-end “luxury” hotel so I’m writing this from that perspective. There are really odd disconnects across the board. The valets who greeted us - awesome. Wouldn’t change a thing. Friendly, down-to-Earth, efficient, asked all the right questions and gave all the right guidance as to next steps. Check-in: bizarre. There was a woman whose job must’ve been to greet guests and keep everyone moving along, but nothing. “Checking in or out?” She asked. “In.” Then nothing. The queue was non-existent and it was just a mass of people. It was also a ‘kids stay free’ weekend and completely chaotic. When we got to the desk, the young man was civil, but robotic; and he was the best of the bunch. We had booked a suite for a few grand for just 3 days and two nights. It was our first trip in six years so we decided to splurge. The place is confusing and although they give you one paper map of the place at check-in, the signage inside the hotel is sparse to say the least. Nothing in the elevators. The place is palatial and it wouldn’t hurt to have a discreet and stylish version of a mall map (trust me - it’s complex enough to warrant it). I get they don’t want to ruin any of the history, but at the same time - they could find nuanced ways to enhance the visitor experience on that front. As far as ambiance, it’s beautiful old world charm…with more bare bulb fixtures blaring at you than you could ever imagine. At the time, that was the best you could do after gas light fixtures. But if the place evolved from gas light to bare bulbs (as they became available), I’d suggest it’s time for your next advancement because the bare bulb thing - is abrasive and overwhelming - every corridor, every room, the main gathering places. An endless sea of lightbulbs. And dust! I’m 6’4” and I don’t think anything was dusted over the height of 5’10”. Cobwebs on our bathroom light fixtures, that sort of thing. Was just unexpected. And clutter on all the hallway windowsills every day. As they’d service a room, they’d use the windowsills in the corridors to pile napkins, used dishes, etc. Really took away from the character and views. Services - the spa was great! Two of the best massages I’ve ever had - but the culture in the spa was completely different from the main building and the dining areas to the point I was left wondering if indeed it’s run as a completely separate business; it felt that way. Breakfast and lunch felt as if we were on a cruise ship, with fewer choices. We arrived mid day and our first meal was lunch. The food was barely warm. The only hot thing we had was the soup - which was delicious. Then came dinner. When we booked the suite, they made SUCH A FUSS about men wearing collared shirts, slacks, and proper shoes to dinner. We have friends who stayed here years ago and they wouldn’t seat the husband unless he changed into slacks. So we took it seriously and packed accordingly. Seated next to us was a guy in a hoodie, blue jeans, and sneakers. If you’re not going to enforce your rules, don’t make guests feel badly and force them to pack according to a policy you don’t bother enforcing. You made this guest resentful and left a bad impression. Room service - inconsistent experience. First time, great. Second time, we asked for tea for two; chamomile. “Oh, we can’t do that unless you buy a box.” So we had to buy like a dozen pouches of Egyptian chamomile tea in a wooden box. Ridiculous. I could walk into any office break room in America and get a couple bags of chamomile tea. We ordered coffee the next morning - no one answers the phone in room service BTW - you have to leave a message, then they may or may not call your room back (and wake everyone up) so you can confirm what you already left in your message. Waited an hour - nothing ever showed up. Went to breakfast, came back to the room and room service had cleared the prior night’s tea service, but we left a note not to leave the coffee in case they ever showed up. Weird and not the glitzy experience they advertise and charge for. So in the end, everything was disjointed. I wasn’t going to go into all this detail, but when I told a friend about some of these oddities, she said “After a hundred years, you’d think they’d have it all worked out by now.” And she’s right - after a 100 years, I’d think they’d have it all worked out by now. The grounds - so impressive and beautiful. But I wouldn’t go back. Do a day trip. You’ll get the best of everything.
First day here.
Valet staff is super wonderful. But noise is loud and chaotic and it doesn't feel very restful like a spa should . Fitness classes are terrible- you shouldn't expect to get a good workout in. And you can't expect them to give you the class that was posted. The yoga instructor decides that she is going to do the class listed and does something entirely different. Also they have very few classes here when compared to Canyon Ranch. If you are looking for a restful and relaxing vacation "away from the real world " DO NOT GO HERE. Go to Canyon Ranch in Lennox , MA. They have a significantly greater array of fitness classes and spa treatments. And it feels like a spa should - relaxing, peaceful, quiet... Also the rooms are old, and the food selection is not very varied. Definitely not as good as Canyon Ranch. Only positives are valet staff and location - it is pretty here!
I am having my ashes thrown in this beautiful lake & place
I am having my ashes thrown in this beautiful lake & place when I am going to the afterlife ( been there many times over 40 years)
Just left a work meeting here.
This is a very old hotel that doesn't have a TV or phone in the room. For $800/night, i had much higher expectations. The only redeeming thing was the food. Otherwise, I'll pass on ever returning. The old plumbing and radiator woke me up at 2:30AM due to the noise. Also, imagine my disgust when I stepped in the shower and saw these underwear hanging of a prior guest. Guest relations merely shrugged and apologized without offering any restitution.
Very disappointed in our recent stay.
While our room was lovely, it was located on the first floor and overlooked the parking lot. no gorgeous views! The lodge is beautifully preserved but other than the main staircase and several Christmas trees, there was none of the holiday grandeur and excitement. We stayed Tuesday-Thursday and until the morning we left, the main lounge area overlooking the lake was closed due to corporates events. If we wanted to sit and enjoy the scenery we had to be outside in 28 degree winds. Staff was a 50-50 mix of lovely and surly. While there were some who were friendly and welcoming, there were just as many who seemed to enjoy ignoring us. Unfortunately the dining room was loud and, again, we were seated well away from any views. It felt very much like a super expensive nursing home with better food.
