Mission Inn Festival of Lights Riverside Reviews from The Last Year
Great breakfast experience
My wife and I recently visited the Mission Inn and tried the restaurant for breakfast. She enjoyed a tasty omelette, which was perfectly cooked and filled with fresh ingredients. I had the steak and eggs, and the steak was tender and seasoned well. We both started our day with refreshing mimosas that hit the spot. The highlight of our visit was the exceptional service from our server, Arturo. He was attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed. We’ll definitely be coming back!
Repeat disappointments
While the Mission Inn is beautiful, the restaurant really needs to try harder to serve a good meal. I have now three times over the past couple of years paid well only to get a mediocre meal, and there's really no excuse. This time, I was part of a party required to pay $85/person for the privilege of sitting in one corner of the restaurant versus another part of the restaurant, so I expected a good meal. Instead, I got a $25 meal. Maybe. I won't be suggesting this restaurant anymore to visiting guests.
Not to be missed.
Excellent food, amazing patio, very reasonable prices with great service. Stunning. The flowers were fresh and beautiful.
Mission impossible
Went here with my girlfriend for a quick drink and a bite to eat for lunch. The restaurant was empty and we put our orders in for drinks and food. The food came promptly but it was very bland. Our drinks never arrived so we had to take them off the bill. The waiting staff gave zero f**ks. The first time I’ve never left a tip at a restaurant.
Long Post Warning! My husband took me to The Mission Inn
Long Post Warning! My husband took me to The Mission Inn after I returned from a 10 hour flight from Japan. I was in desperate need of a shower and sleep. He decided to upgrade our room so I would have the best chance of relaxation. The first room they gave us didn't have a nice bathroom so they said we could switch. The second room they gave us the key didn't work. My husband had to go to the front desk three times before someone came up to fix it. While I was unpacking our bathroom stuff (in a bathroom that was exactly the same as the first) my husband unmade the bed to check for unpleasantries. And thankfully, he did! The stains on the sheets do not belong in a 2 star motel, much less a 4 star hotel! Once again, back to the front desk and this time they offer an upgrade on our upgrade. I was thrilled. Maybe we will get a 4 star bathroom. Nope. Still a 2 star- but worse! When I finally was able to get a shower I had to keep shutting it off for it to drain. I was literally in ankle deep water. I gag just thinking about it. The next day we called to have them fix the shower and when we returned from our breakfast, the maintenance worker had left behind his dirty rags. I won't bore you with how bad the housekeeping was but let you know that my husband asked the front desk upon check out to have the manager call him. My husband has tried calling the manager four times and left voice mails. He has not been contacted. I would not usually leave such a detailed and negative review, and it could have been prevented if the management had just replied. I do not recommend The Mission Inn.
Horrible customer service.
A few times I have reached out to try and schedule a stay here and staff members are so short and hang up mid sentence. Thank god I didn't have my wedding here because we were about to sign the contract but something told us not to. Lol the service ruins the experience. Not worth the stay.
Mission inn stole my credit card information in December
Mission inn stole my credit card information in December and refuses to refund or acknowledge what they did. Do not stay here! They steal. If that isn't enough for you the roach infestation in the hotel will get you. Gross!
Zero if possible .
I made the reservation through Expedia on Jan. 12 for a stay on Feb 17-18. Confirmed. On Feb. 1 the mission inn cancelled my reservations. In between, on Jan. 29, the Mission Inn advertised a sweetheart special for that particular weekend. After many phone calls and messages left for the manager, I found out that the inn was overbooked and they had cancelled all the reservations made by third parties! All Alfie, the manager could say was"sorry". Not could we rebook you, nothing. Very poor management.

I showed up on the Last day & the sight was very lovely to see ! I wish I should have taken more photos . But a camera can never capture the same ! You must go & see it all for yourself Don't forget to bring something warm because around this time in the season it can get cold at night - had a blast & got to take some pictures under some fascinating sights - check them out
Holiday Disappointment
Not only was the Christmas Eve Brunch way below our expectations as we have been to the Christmas Brunch a number of times and always was an excellent experience, It was when our server had called me on my cell phone when I left the restaurant with my family telling me I HAD RAN OUT ON THE BILL. I was so humiliated and horrified. I had pre-paid the night before for the whole bill over $400.00. The waitress did call back and she left a message that there was a mix up with the front and back personnel. I will never go back to any Holiday Brunch again. I tried to call to talk to any Management Pesonnel but no one returned my calls after trying repeated times.
Not sure quite what I was expecting, but I felt a little
Not sure quite what I was expecting, but I felt a little disappointed by this experience! Maybe if you live in or near Riverside, it's worth going every year, since it's free. But for me, because I live in San Diego and am used to the Christmas lights at the Hotel Del Coronado, I think checking this out once was enough. Seeing downtown Riverside was probably the best part: I liked how the local shops were open late, there was live music on the street, and lots of people were walking around. And the lights on the exterior of the hotel looked quite beautiful. The part that was disappointing was the courtyard walkthrough. We waited in a long line to walk through the hotel courtyard, where you could barely see anything, and it was over before I knew it. My friend, who had been before, said "that's it!" at the end, and I thought she was kidding. I guess I was expecting to enter an atrium or something, and maybe get some better views of the hotel's interior. But it's a fancy hotel, and they have giant crowds of people coming through to look at the lights, so it makes sense that it's more restricted. I'm glad I saw it once, but I probably won't be back! Unless I'm with young kids and/or happen to already be in the area during the Christmas season.
We had a 5:30 reservation in the main restaurant.
The food didn't arrive until 2 hours later. No explanation for extreme wait. 2 Steaks were not cooked as ordered. We wanted a second round of drinks but no one ever came to take the order The rest of the food was good. Terrible service.
Drove over from Palm Spring to have dinner at Mission Inn
Drove over from Palm Spring to have dinner at Mission Inn last evening and see the lights. We have stayed at the Inn many times, but had not seen the Inn at Christmas for over a decade. What a horrible transformation. Years ago the Inn was a beautiful, tastefully decorated Christmas highlight. Today, it is a gargantuan, Disney-like monstrosity. If you like thousands of people crowded into one city block, you might like it. Be prepared to wait in line for over an hour to spend a few minutes seeing some lights. We talked to the staff at the restaurant and they hate it. I can't image paying nearly $300/night at a hotel where you can barely get to your room through the throngs of people. The Mission Inn and the City of Riverside should be ashamed of themselves for ruining a community treasure all to make an extra buck. Our advice is stay away from the Mission Inn at Christmas time.
Our church members brought us here for Christmas lights and
Our church members brought us here for Christmas lights and dinner. It was a week before Christmas so difficult finding parking space. Drove around the block for good 20 minutes before one of the members decided to pay for parking structure near by the sign says $30 later $50??? Well I guess we were lucky enough to pay $30 :( The lighting was beautiful but over crowded. Lines were way too long to go inside.
Lovely Dinner at Duane’s
A delightful post-Christmas dinner at Duane’s following a tour of the fabulous Cheech Museum and a walk about the glorious Holiday Lights. We were seated promptly and served suavely by brothers Dean and Sana, cosmopolitan Tunisians that they are (past staffers at Moulin Rouge in Paris. A bottle of 2021 Qupe “Y” Chardonnay to start (and Roku Gin Dirty Martinis for two) along with initial crab cakes and burrata as appetizers. Then 2019 Trefethen “Oak Knoll” Sauvignon Blanc to go with Diver Sea Scallops, lobster Macaroni, Ahi Tuna, and Peppercorn Steak (the latter with a glass of the special house collection Pinot Noir) … all beautifully served the brothers and other staff. It was an extra gift to chat with Sana over various matters philosophical over the course of this most special evening in a venue of such great authenticity and historical richness. Feliz Navidad!
A one and done for me, honestly underwhelming for the hype
A one and done for me, honestly underwhelming for the hype it gets. I can see the potential and why locals love it. A nice holiday outing but I wouldn't go out of my way to attend.
Not very impressed
The food was not very good, ordered ahi tuna, rice was cold and very little portion for the price. 5 of us were not very impressed with the food.
Poor
Beautiful setting-that's it. Service was horrible. We waited an hour for our food and when it arrived, it was very subpar especially for the price. I have never seen a worse presentation and lack of flavor. 17 dollars for a small glass of wine? Get out! 50 dollars for a mediocre steak with one sprig of brocoli and splatted on top of the mashed potatoes? After dinner, we waited another half hour for the check. AVOID!!!
Poor Communication
This review refers to Duane's restaurant in the Mission Inn, Riverside. I made a reservation for 5 pm on 18-Dec. I decided to cancel the reservation and made many calls, (951) 784 0300, but no-one picked up the phone. Eventually I made contact with the Mission Inn front desk (Mason). Most unhelpful. His basic advice -- keep trying. They have no system for leaving a message/their contact form on the webpage does not work. Several reviews refer to poor customer service.
Pathetic Brunch
So very disappointing to see a pathetic brunch with the Mission Inn name to it. We usually celebrate the holidays with our annual office holiday brunch so I am well aware of what the mission Inn is capable of. The brunch was truly pathetic. The presentation was cafeteria style with most of the food showing signs of dehydration at the edges. The previous salad bar is now reduced to 2 bowls. A Caesar salad and another tossed green salad. The breakfast items reduced to 4 dishes and the hot food absolutely tasteless. The cheese tray with drastically reduced choices, and the fruit tray lay picked on and empty for at least 10 minutes before they were replenished. The omelette station serves only omelette and has forgotten how to make eggs Benedict to order. The cold seafood displayed crab legs which are so skinny that it was a feat to try and extract the meat. Previously the legs were split in half but they are so lean and skinny that I guess it is not possible to split them. The selection of breads are a disgrace with cold bagels sitting in a bowl with no taste in sight. The dessert buffet is a mere joke and I will not bother to even elaborate. I gave this review 1 star for the shrimp. Additionally, in the past since no one in the party takes alcohol, we have been given Martinellis Apple cider as a replacement to the champagne. This time the server flatly refused and then after much begging, produced 2, and only 2 bottles, sourced apparently from room service. What a sad sad brunch......... SO PATHETIC. This is the very last time we will host our holiday brunch at the Mission Inn and I hope the F & B manager takes note of this review and does something to revive the sorry state of this once enjoyable brunch.
exceptional food and service at both breakfast and dinner
We had both dinner and breakfast at this beautiful restaurant. We sat outdoors at breakfast, as in the photo. The food was exceptionally good. So was the service. In fact it was one of the best dining experiences we've ever had, in any country.
Professional, High Class, And Delicious
This place was great, the food was so fresh and tasty, the service was respectful and clean but also swift. It felt like a private dinner just for me and my partners. Definitely will throw more money at them again
Sunday Brunch
I was staying at the hotel, so of course wanted to try their Sunday Brunch, served from 10 am -3 pm. It's a popular event, so reservations are highly recommended. It's a champagne (or mimosa) buffet-style brunch, with 2 drinks per person allowed, and costs $69. Seating is available indoors, outdoors on the Spanish Patio, and also indoors within Duane's Steakhouse. Hostesses ask if you prefer indoors or outdoors, and do a good job of spreading people out in the 3 areas. Buffet food tables are set up in the restaurant itself (breakfast items) and in the California Lounge (lunch items like carved prime rib, fresh fruit, cheeses, salads, cold seafood-- mussels, crab claws and shrimp, and many many desserts). Also in the restaurant at the open kitchen is an omelet station and pancakes/Belgian waffles. As far as brunches go, this one was pretty extensive. Food appeared to be replenished in a timely manner, and the atmosphere was not as frenzied as other buffets I've seen. Service was good. A solid brunch choice.
