I'm truly disappointed to report that our celebratory
I'm truly disappointed to report that our celebratory dinner at Mesu, intended as a special occasion for my wife's birthday, was tarnished by the surprisingly inhospitable conduct from the management. Despite spending over $500 on what was undeniably delicious food--encompassing appetizers, a variety of dishes, drinks, and desserts--the evening was overshadowed by an unexpected and rather rude interaction as we finished our dessert. Without any prior indication on our reservation, the manager approached us, informing us that our table was reserved for only one hour and fifteen minutes, a policy that was neither mentioned at the time of booking nor at any point during our meal. He bluntly told us we had overstayed, with people waiting for our table. This abrupt announcement was both shocking and demeaning, especially considering the nature of our visit and the considerable amount we had spent. When I confronted him to express our displeasure, noting the absence of any such time restrictions stated during the booking process and the absurdity of enforcing such a limit on a $500 meal, his response was dismissively matter-of-fact. His lack of empathy and unwillingness to accommodate a peaceful resolution to the situation only further dampened what should have been a joyous celebration. His parting words, upon hearing we wouldn't be returning, were a nonchalant "that's fine." It was clear that customer satisfaction was not on the agenda at [Restaurant Name]. It's regrettable that the manager's behavior starkly contrasted with the quality of the food and the otherwise pleasant ambiance of the establishment. For those looking for a restaurant where the experience matches the quality of the menu and where guests are treated with the respect they deserve, especially when celebrating a special occasion, I suggest looking elsewhere. We certainly expected more from Mesu.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is great - the management is horrible.
We went for a birthday dinner with a party of 6. At 1 hour and 40 minutes we were asked to leave, because we had been there longer than 1 hour and 15 min. Nowhere on the reservation or the website does it state a time limit on the table. We ordered several appetizers, multiple rounds of drinks, 6 meals, and 2 desserts. Our total bill was over $500 and we were asked to leave. After talking to the manager, he was indifferent about there not being a posted time limit. We were a quiet, easy table, spending quite a bit of money. We will absolutely not be back, and would have picked a different place to enjoy a birthday dinner with friends had we known. When we said "we will not be coming back" he simply said "that's fine".
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely phenomenal in all aspects! Great vibe, cool
Absolutely phenomenal in all aspects! Great vibe, cool drinks and fantastic food! They were very busy when my group of five arrived and the reservation was pushed by them by about 25 minutes. The manager bought us a round of drinks! Super cool and made the difference! Entire staff is truly awesome! Thanks for the entire experience!

Walked by here casually one day & was immediately intrigued by the fusion concept. Decided to swing by on a Tuesday, b/c who doesn't love a special? I was impressed by the portions of the sushi, and the service was great! Allie did an amazing job telling us about their new tequila and obliged me to film her making my espresso martini. 10/10 The ambiance and decor were great as well. Will be back to see this place in action at night.
Be the first to ReplyThis was the BEST food I've had in a while.
I'm not easy to impress when it comes to my food. I LOVE GOOD, flavorful, hot food. I would have never thought to eat tacos with sushi but it was so good. I had the barbacoa tacos with the Tsumani sushi roll. If I wouldn't have had both, I definitely would've had more than one taco. The FLAVORS!! My Lord. This place was a whole vibe. My friend and I got a little dressed up since we were visiting the area. Allie provided great service. She was polite, attentive and her suggestions were spot on. Not to mention the drinks sealed the deal. Great experience! I will definitely be back in the fall.
Be the first to ReplyThe atmosphere as well as the staff were top notch.
My daughter and I shared an appetizer and some sushi and both were top notch. We eat had a drink and well and everything was delicious!
Be the first to ReplyWent here for a girls bachelorette dinner and had made
Went here for a girls bachelorette dinner and had made reservations weeks in advance as well as confirmed. We get there on time for our reservation and they tell us our table wouldn't be ready for an another 15 minutes which we were okay with(half of us had worked in the service industry for years so we get stuff happens) but as we were standing there in the front area like sardines because there isn't a lot of room and it was pouring rain out, we watch them serve the table they told us they were waiting on another very large pitcher of margaritas so that 15 minutes turned into well over half an hour. During that time the hosts recommended we go to bubbles and bourbon down the street while we wait so out into the pouring rain we went. Once they informed us our table was ready and we sat down it got better but it wasn't anything special. They never apologized for the wait either which was strange to me and the least they could do. I had the tacos with corn tortilla and a margarita which were good. The people in our group that ordered sushi said it wasn't all that great. Another thing to point out is that those who ordered sushi got their food at least 15 minutes before the rest of us so the expo of food was off which I'm sure can be harder to coordinate with tacos&sushi but not impossible. On a positive note, our server was nice and the atmosphere is fun, trendy, and club like.
Be the first to ReplyThis place was popping and had a good vibe.
The good music and decor, the menu was my favorite. My two favorite foods are Mexican food and sushi and I got the best of both worlds that night. I love that you can make your own margarita options for drinks they offer sake too. Service was great, the food was absolutely amazing. The chips were soooooooo good too. Whatever seasoning was on them was perfect. The salsa was also delicious and the queso was freaking good. If I go back to Charleston I would def put this on my list bc it satisfied both my favorite food craving. The lobster roll was exactly what I'm was looking for. I thought one of the cuisines would out shine the other but they killed it at both perfectly. Thanks Leva and Lamar for nailing this menu!
Be the first to ReplyHighly recommended! Food, drinks, music, vibe 10/10.
Servers were very nice and helpful with the menu.
Be the first to ReplyOur first visit to Charleston and this is such a goody
Our first visit to Charleston and this is such a goody destination . It is so hard to get into a restaurant without a reservation but luckily Mesu had a table for the 4 of us. The drinks menu is interesting , I went with the Japanese mule which tasted great. I went with the mesu fish bowl which is like a fixed poke bowl .... Interesting combination of the sticky rice with all the usual additions and fresh raw tuna and ... The tacos were interesting ... can't complain and the sautéed veg and veggie rolls were tasty as well The seating area was nice with an interesting g art decor and our server was great

Traveling with someone who needs a gluten-free diet (celiac), and so grateful for our lovely, thoughtful, and well-informed bartender and the great chef who made me feel confident in my order. Great ambience, terrific guacamole, and a delicious dinner all around. My dining partner enjoyed the pork carnitas nachos, and I had the spicy soyrizo tacos. We're already talking about going back.
Be the first to ReplyThe nachos was the best I ever had.
My wife got a roll which she loved. The service was good. The restaurant was nice. I would go back.

The bartender was friendly, food was good, good for a group.
Be the first to ReplyMexican? Sushi? Why pick one when you can have BOTH?
Mexican? Sushi? Why pick one when you can have BOTH? Located on Upper King, Mesu combines two of my *favorite* cuisines to bring us some bold, flavorful & delicious bites This spot is a VIBE with moody, colorful ambiance and is the perfect way to kick off a fun evening in downtown Charleston. What I ate/drank/loved: Tequila Crush Margarita Pitcher Chips & Dip Trio Bao Buns Habanero Glazed Edamame Street Corn Skewers Ceviche Taco Platter Sushi Platter Churros The staff really brought the party for our crew with sparklers, margarita pitchers, a massive sushi platter & tons of shareable plates making this is a great spot for a bachelorette party, birthday or just a fun night with a group of friends! Pro Tip: They offer sushi platters to-go with up to 125 pieces of sushi so keep them in mind for your next event
Be the first to ReplyI'm in love.
Pull me away and I may always look back wondering why I ever doubted a Mexican Sushi restaurant. I am fairly certain I openly scoffed at such concepts before but I am drifting into food bliss and may never return. One thing about Charleston is by and large the food is delicious but there is delicious and there's this. I walked past Mesu pausing to notice the bright colors with the slightly industrial look. I felt an art vibe and was drawn in to sit at the bar. Ally, bartender extraordinaire, was brilliant. Here's the thing - I am here on business travel. For ten hours all I did was think, think, talk, talk and it gets exhausting. To sit at a bar and have someone say this is the best drink and the best rolls with such confidence that it was indisputable truth? Oh hell yea. I ordered Ally's recommendations and I was so very happy with them! The Barbacoa beef taco was brilliant. Tender beef, bright cheese, good texture. The Hamachi Tale was a great balance, flavorful, great texture, brilliant. The oyster shooter was among the best I have ever had. The cocktails in their cute Patron glasses were amazing. They were light, smooth, and perhaps too easy to drink. I couldn't want for more. It was a delight. I regretfully left because work called but I am glad to have stopped in here.
Be the first to ReplyUnique artistic vibes and fun music as soon as you walk
Unique artistic vibes and fun music as soon as you walk inside. We had a reservation for party of 8 and were quickly seated at a table tucked into the back corner. It's best to come downtown after 6pm since that's when you don't have to pay for we're street parking. Wait staff was very considerate and asked if anyone in our party had any allergies. If you're thinking of checking out this downtown spot, I highly recommend on a Tuesday before 7pm for their $10 Tuesday menu! We did nachos and the 2 tacos off that menu as well as shrimp roll. Barbacoa Braised Beef Nachos [4 stars] The melted Gouda cheese was yummy and not too heavy. There were some yummy sautéed onions. The barbacoa was the star of the show. Perfectly flavored, not too much but not too little. And cooked just right, very tender and juicy. It was nice that it came with a side of guac. The dish was just missing more sautéed peppers and it needed a salsa so I had to ask the wait staff when they dropped off the plate for some pico de gallo or salsa (which they seemed confused by my ask). 2 Tacos [3.5 stars] Surprisingly do not order the crispy chicken. We had to tell our waiter that 2 people in our party could not finish it and asked to change it out for the smoked chicken which was so much better. Shrimp roll [2 stars] Wouldn't order again. The wasabi did not smell fresh. The roll was pretty dull and wouldn't suggest. We couldn't finish eating all of it. Pretty unfortunate that our table was charged a 25% gratuity for a large party. Pretty high rate. More familiar with 18-20% group gratuity rate. Overall I think the $10 menu probably saved our experience because I don't think the typical price would have matched what we got out the whole night.

Every bite was phenomenal and full of flavor! Server had no problem answering questions and made excellent suggestions. Fun and funky decor and although small, you don't feel crowded at all. Will be back!
Be the first to ReplyCame here for dinner after reading all the good reviews.
Interesting concept as it's not a fusion between Mexican and sushi but essentially 2 restaurant cuisines in one place. The vibe is cool, happening. Great selection of tequila and other liquor. The service was fair. Our server was really nice just a bit busy and so not that attentive. I will say that they were pretty accommodating with some of our requests. The food overall is good but way overpriced. Drinks were good. We did the trio app of Queso, Guac, and Salsa. The guac was under seasoned. Queso was on point. Salsa was average. We also had the street corn skewers, average at best. Sushi rolls that are $20 or more is a bit excessive especially when the rolls were not that great. I had the lobster Rangoon roll which sounded good but just didn't have enough lobster or other ingredients to justify the $20 price tag. I also tried the fried pork carnitas taco. Portion of pork to tortilla was lacking. The pork was cooked great and flavorful, I wish I had more of it. Wife had the veggie taco which she said was really good. They didn't have many vegetarian options overall. She also had a veggie sushi roll with cucumber ($14). For dessert we had a doughnut churro which my girls devoured( probably the best part of our meal).Overall not a bad meal but also nothing to write home about. I would probably come back for the drinks but not necessarily the food.
Be the first to ReplyI love this place.
Sushi was great and Natalia, our waitress, was very attentive and professional. I will be back again for sure.

Natalia was amazing & such a great server & so helpful in choosing our food!! We had an amazing time with her
Be the first to ReplySushi is great and fresh, tacos are sub-par and overpriced.
The chips are outstanding with the spice that's on them, it's addicting. Margaritas are too notch yummy and gives a great buzz. The taquitos were good but overpriced for only 2. Overall would recommend for a quick bite if downtown with a good atmosphere on the weekend!
Be the first to ReplyTruly, 3 1/2 stars would probably have been a bit more
Truly, 3 1/2 stars would probably have been a bit more accurate, mainly because of the cost. Paying what they charge should result in some unique and tasty dishes. The Mexican twist was not what I expected either. A fusion of Mexican and Japanese on the sushi side sounded great, the only thing I saw for a fusion was pretty much the pickled red onions scattered on a cut roll we had. Now, to there credit, the salsa that came with the chips (RED) was super tasty, just wish it had a little zing to it, but nothing. Even with the inflation and crybaby wages of the millennial servers these days, the bill should not have hit the $200 range. Come on, $19 for a margarita? Seemed to be the theme at most higher quality restaurants throughout the South. High booze prices. A sign of the times unfortunately and I can only imagine how many places are going to start wholesale shutting down because of ridiculous lease costs, and poor service by millennials who know what a stuffed microwave pizza is, and not much more about food. Glad we tried it, but would stick with an establishment about 3 blocks down that was much better service and food quality. Good luck but if the restaurant wishes to make it, better stop hiring kids and having a bit of a lack of managerial control. Seven workers that we could see, early 5 pm sitting, and the staff should be keeping everything fresh and moving with those numbers. Some reality show is friends, I guess, with the owner but seriously pumping up a friend's business that does not deserve it, simply would make me question the worth of their opinions or own ventures.
