Rudeness
First of all, rudeness. In a country where kindness is a religion they are really rude. The food was also bland and flavourless.

I love this ramen, everything was truly perfect, we had two portions of ramen and two portions of rice, truly spectacular!
Be the first to ReplyI expected more from the broth
This ramen bar is known for bonito ramen (tuna flakes) with Wagyu beef. The meat is actually fantastic and very tasty. The two broths, on the other hand, didn't convince me and I expected more here. Ramen costs 10 EUR. Because of the Michelin award, you have to wait a bit, but it's OK. BofG - Come back/recommendation factor (0-100%): I wouldn't come back here quickly.
Be the first to ReplyMust-eat ramen in Kyoto
The food is super delicious, but you have to reserve time to queue up. The two of us arrived at around 11:45 in the morning, and we were already waiting in line for the flight. We had to make a reservation at 1:30 to be seated first. The noodles are just right, and there are two soup bases to choose from, white/black. The white soup is so clear and comfortable, while the black soup is thick but not too fatty. The barbecued pork is thinly sliced, but the thickness is just right, and it has enough fat but not too greasy. Ramen is a must-eat in Kyoto, so when you go there, you really need to make time to queue up.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Ramen
Kyoto and Osaka has the most Michelin Guide restaurants in the world. We werenโt planning on hitting one but spontaneity landed at this Michelin Ramen restaurants in Kyoto. Glad we did. Amazing grilled Waygu Beef ramen!!! The shumai is legit delicious. Only waited 20 minutes in line prior for them opening.
Be the first to ReplyMichelin-Recommended Ramen
If you are a ramen enthusiast then anything with a Michelin recommendation will pique your interest. We queued for around 90 mins in total, 25 mins before opening when the line was already 20 people deep. Any later and you'd need a collect a ticket to come back later. The ramen is dashi based which is certainly different from what we had experienced with pork ramen. Umami, savory but also sweet with a generous portion of Wagyu beef and noodles. I enjoyed it, but more because it was unusual and different to my previous visits to ramen restaurants. My wife, however, was not a fan. You also get a choice of white (recommended by the staff) or black soy for your base. Staff were lovely, beautiful minimalist interior and counter/ booth seating. Overall I would recommend but personally would not return. Or perhaps I just need to eat more dashi-based ramen. Best do that, just to make sure.
Be the first to ReplyLong line but worth the wait
Service was extremely good. The two waiters or cashier spoke very good English. Line was quite long and it took 45mins to be seated. Food was okay even though I'm not that fond of Ramen.
Be the first to ReplyNot my style ramen
Menya is reknown for their dashi and bonito broths -- and non-fish-lover-that-I-am, both broths were way too fishy for my tastes. We ordered the cold ramen grilled Wagyu beef ramen and the bonito broth ramen with pork with a side of tuna over rice. My husband thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes, which just proves that either I did not order well or should in the future avoid places specializing in seafood broth.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a place! Best ramen ever!
We werenโt sure where to go so stumbled so did a quick search and this popped up. I must admit, we missed it like 3 times, very inconspicuous place. But guessed right at the 4th time due to the queue of locals outside. Quite mysterious I must say! We were ushered in very politely. The place is simple but well done, cool interiors and nice looking menu. Ordered the ramen with wagyu beef on the side with all the trimmings. The food was exceptional, so simple but clearly very high quality ingredients. The waiter kindly explained the dishes and off we went, slurping and lapping up every last drop. We went back 3 times in our 4 days in Kyoto! I will miss this place! You should open one in London! ๐ช๐ฝ
Be the first to ReplyWorth the wait!
We found this restaurant after a horrible experience at another ramen restaurant nearby. I am so glad that circumstances pushed us to locate this restaurant.
While we had to wait for about 30 minutes outside, in line, the experience was worth it. The staff here is very friendly, and our food, as well as some other customerโs food, was taking longer, they gave us a delicious pork appetizer on the house.
The ramen was unlike any other ramen Iโve had in the US or Japan, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Delightful Twist on a Classic Tradition
Menya Inoichi stands apart from the average ramen shop in Japan.
Ramen has enjoyed a surge in popularity as the world discovers it through celebrity chefs like David Chang (Momofuku). But in Japan, where ramen is a classic staple like steamed rice and street corner vending machines, differentiation is hard to come by. Itโs easy to take ramen for granted. Ramen is ramen.
But at Menya Inoichi ramen is something different.
Here, simple ramen has been perfected and reimagined. Each element receives special attention - impossibly tender wagyu beef is sliced perfectly thin and grilled with a hand torch just until the highlights of caramel, smoke, green grass, onions, iron, and salt are exposed. Bonito flakes are shaved to order in a machine you might find at the best New Orleans snowball stands. The broth is the centerpiece not the backdrop, full of deep, rich seafood flavor. The noodles are thin, firm, and full of flavor. The pickled accompaniments are crisp and fresh, not the jarred afterthoughts so common at stand-up ramen counters.
One surprising find at this clean, quiet shop four blocks south of Nishiki market was the peach soda, made to order with fresh-diced peach, sugar, and soda water, served with a bamboo mixing spoon. The full freshness and flavor of the peach was explosive on the palate. I expect less flavor might be found by eating the fruit itself - the combination of soda and sugar opened up the aroma and enlivened the taste until it was all-consuming. I would recommend Menya Inoichi just for this drink.
The service at Menya Inoichi was perfect: attentive, helpful, friendly, and unobtrusive. There is a reason this unassuming ramen shop is on the Michelin watch list. Itโs a new approach to an old favorite, presented flawlessly, to enlighten and delight. Worth the wait and the effort to find it. My strongest recommendation for a new experience with a classic dish.
