4 course tasting menu
The restaurant is located at the 5* Grand Hotel, and it is a bit casual or funky for a grand hotel with its mismatched chairs, but it’s a delightful experience. We had the 4 course menu, and everything was wonderful. The food, service and wine were all excellent, and I’d recommend this if in Stockholm, and especially if you’re staying at the hotel.

I visited Stockholm for a week and booked Mathias Dahlgren-Matbaren for my last dinner in the city. This modern bistro is inside Grand Hotel which is a short walk from where I stayed. The very nice gentleman who served me suggested I order 1 dish at a time. It’s a very good idea since I wasn’t really hungry. I’d the following dishes: - seared Swedish squid - steamed bun with Adobo pork belly - steamed skrei with fried Brussels sprouts - wild chocolate from Bolivia. All of them were delicious. Portions weren’t big so I’d try more variety of food. Good food and even better service. I throughly enjoyed my meal.

It was a nice lunch at Mathias Dahlgren Matbaren. Appetizers are ordered. Good food and nice service. Can really recommend a visit here!
Be the first to ReplyCould have been so much better
Just not what it is made out to be. Was expecting so much more and was frankly a huge disappointment. Planned a night out with my wife and both of us we let down. Service was poor, food was average and for a Resturant based on Swedish cuisne that ought to have Swedish speaking staff who know the dishes and can explain them.
Be the first to ReplySuperb food
This was a thoroughly enjoyable meal in a cool restaurant in the impressive Grand Hotel in Stockholm. The menu is a wide range of light dishes, with lots of interesting tales on classic dishes. We ordered steak tartare, tuna cerviche, pork belly bao buns, beetroot and raspberry salad, roe deer shish kebab and a pumpkin and broccoli dish. The flavours in each dish were sensational and there was not a weak dish amongst our orders. Fur dessert, we shared a Swiss roll - again, this was an interesting take on the rush and excellent. Service was slick and the whole experience great.

Nice relaxed atmosphere with taste experiences beyond the ordinary. You immediately felt welcome and you wanted to eat everything. We started by bringing in pickled vegetables, sausages with bread for starters. For main course Butter-fried turbot with roe, Steamed bun, Adobo pork side & Grilled zabuton. And then finish with orange & olive oil and "Rolled cake".

Everything about this place is excellent. We prefer to sit at the bar, super relaxed and hence not typically the atmosphere of a Michelin star restaurant. Lately I’ve tried the hot dog with truffle, cray fish from Bohuslän, steamed bun, deer shish kebab, tempura aubergine and carne cruda. The cray fish is absolutely superb.

Excellente cuisine. Beaucoup de recherche. What a creativity. It tastes good even if you don’t know what to expect. Fiest time we taste hay ice cream. Congrats to this great team!
Be the first to ReplySimple and Excelellent
Simple and excellent at the same time. In a time when everyone wants to make fancy elaborated food it is a pleasant surprise to experience non-pretentious top level cuisine. Beautiful location next to Grand Hotel.
Be the first to ReplyA pleasant experience
A pleasant experience, and good concept with several smaller dishes to choose from. The necked chanterelles were a favourite.
Be the first to ReplyA different way of dining - superb!
What can I say! Just the best lunch ever! What a brilliant concept! You choose your courses as you go, choose your wine or beer as you go and end with a pudding and coffee. I am gluten free and the attention to detail and support was brilliant. Their home cooked GF bread is fantastic. The service is friendly and enjoyable. We felt our server supported us through our culinary experience and wanted to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. She made the whole experience memorable and enjoyable. Really recommend the Scandinavian sashimi, streamed cod and wild choc pud!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent for brunch
Had several different courses and some drinks. Food was really good, as was the service. Steamed beef bun was terrific. Would recommend to go here for brunch, get some champagne and buy as many courses as you'd like.
Be the first to ReplyAlways great
This great place is highly recommended. Not advertised entrance to the right of the Grand Hotel entrance. Serves fantastic and artistic smaller dishes (larger tapas size). A place I’ve been to several times and keep coming back. Fantastic service and an almost ”unlimited” choice of wines.
Be the first to ReplyTasting menu May dinner
Had the 7 course tasting menu. The food was fantastic, both watching the preparations infront of us and the actual taste. The service was also perfect , even guiding to the toilets is a little above and beyond what we are used to. Alcohol free drinks for another couple looked better than the usual 'cider' variations that we have seen in other restaurants. Only tasted 2 of the wines that were chosen fir the menu due to medical reasons, but they complimented the food perfectly.
Be the first to ReplySave your money, go somewhere else. Overpriced and overhyped….
The dishes on the four course dinner were small and almost without the main ingredient. The dish with raindeer only had two really small pieces. The halibut the same. Not satisfied.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent
If you want to eat fine dining in a more relaxed and modern atmosphere this is the place to go. We had 4 course dinner with wine package. Loved everything. Service very good.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service, good food.
We tried matbaren for dinner. The vibe and staffs were great and attentive. We tried different dishes, I was impressed by a few ( Seared lamb, tarta ) but less impressed with some other like cauliflower royale, and Fried wild mushrooms, Steamed cod.
All and all, nice experience, but compared to other fine-dinning experiences, I wouldnt rank it on top.
Excellent food and attentive staff
Highly recommend this amazing restaurant. The food is delicious, the service is outstanding and the setting is beautiful.
Be the first to ReplyDeservedly lost its Michelin star
This used to be one of my favorite restaurants in Europe - casual yet very polished and detailed oriented, with amazing seasonal Scandinavian food (think salmon&reindeer sashimi). Unfortunately, the menu has shifted over the years to some poorly executed Asian fusion attempt (I don’t understand the mediocre steamed bun that has been on the menu for a couple of years now…).
Small details have changes. There used to be amazing bread served with meals - then it was changed to a pretty tasteless one - and then on the last visit no bread was served.
Quality of servers has deteriorated over the years too. On my last visit, I ordered a salmon and raw shrimp nikkei dish - and only when it was served I was told “by the way, we don’t have shrimp today so the dish is with scallop instead”. That’s just not acceptable...
I’ve been to Matbaren countless times in the past 10 years but looks like it’s time to move on… When I saw it lost the Michelin star that it had for all those previous years, I thought: “Makes sense… I’m not the only one who’s noticed this…”
Stockholm at its best
It was interesting the 1st time round, less the 2nd time, though it is nice to taste and see, sort of fast food, delivered to you in style and sharp tastes.
Would look forward going back next time round and sit on the bar counter looking at the brigade preparing and chatting with the bar as the evening goes along.
