Mako Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Is there negative score? Read this experience carefully
Is there negative score? Read this experience carefully before heading to this place. Not sure who is giving them 5 stars? Typical omakase place will feed you until you feel I need to stop. This place give you tiny pieces of a few little sushis, you feel half hungry when you leave, and get stomach pain from whatever they fed you with. You pay $200 to make a reservation, and after eating those tiny pieces of not so different sushis, they charge you $450 more on top of the $200 you already paid. I didn't understand how they arrived at the $650 bill. Beware, and stay away. I emailed saying how unsatisfied I was, and how I felt nauseas after eating there, no reply, they don't care. Save your money and go somewhere else!
This place was amazing.
They called before hand to warn us to be there early. As a chronically just on time or fashionably late person I appreciated the heads up. The interior is very simple and sleek, appropriately Japanese. The staff take your coat immediately and seat you. Every one is very respectful. The food was incredible, in particular the Spanish mackerel was a perfect texture and fresh taste, Kakuni braised lamb was so savory and rich it was fantastic , suimono and the sweet potato mochi ice cream was perfect, no too sweet great way to end the meal. A wonderful experience
Wooooow! Came here for my birthday dinner and all I can say
Wooooow! Came here for my birthday dinner and all I can say is wow! This place was honestly my first Michelin star omakase and it totally lives up to its status. We made a reservation for 8:30pm and went in early at around 8:15pm. I have a crustacean allergy and really do not like uni, so I was able to have a modified menu. I was so grateful that they could accommodate (uni on a short notice). We waited until 8:30pm, when all the other tables and bar filled up. We were immediately served with a light soup and some tuna. I was very hesitant to eat the monkfish liver but it was honestly one of the best pieces. I was also worried that I had so many mackerels (don't like the taste) but I was told that since Mako's mackerel is cured in house, the fishy taste is not present. I loved the scallion toppings. There was a deep sea fish that was unbelievable. It was charred in a scallion oil. There are countless other courses that were delicious as well. Overall. I had a great time celebrating my birthday. There was coat check, rounds and rounds of courses, table cleanings, extravagant platings, and a quiet atmosphere. One thing I wished was for the bathrooms to be cleaner. For being a Michelin star restaurant, I expected a higher standard.
I can see how some people might not love the way they do
I can see how some people might not love the way they do omakase. Very minimal interaction with the chef in front of you. Often times you'll be explained the dish not by the one who prepares it. Very minimal interaction between chef and you. Which I didn't mind. Sometimes I just want great food, while at the sushi bar watching it preppedx and talk with whoever I'm with. Fantastic food. Great progression. Didn't overdo the early courses which I find some cheaper omakase experiences do.
Not worth the price.
They advertise the dinner price to be ~$200 per person, and you are required to make a $200 deposit when making a reservation being told the $200 would go towards our dinner price. We ordered two dinners with one wine pairing. We were told the wine pairing would be $35, but they charged us $95 when the bill arrived. The bill also did not detail the automatic 20% gratuity they added, and they asked us for an additional tip on top of that. Not only that, they seemingly upcharged our bill so that our $200 deposit would go towards that. We expected to pay $435-500 before tips and taxes before entering this establishment. The bill we received was $754.69, automatic gratuity and taxes added. To which we tipped an additional $138 because we didn't see gratuity was already added until we asked for an itemized receipt from them digitally afterwards. For $100 more I could have gone to a 3* michelin restaurant for two. The food was good, but felt uninspired and definitely not worth this price. I've had better omakase for a fraction of the price.
Food is stunning and delicious and on point.
It is pricey but it is a fine dining intimate Michelin star experience. Service is top tier and you are constantly being taken care of. I love the ambiance as the place as it feels very intimate as I said before. I'm only able to tag 10 of the pics of the dishes so I posted my favs! We also had a complementary starting dish which was nice

The service was amazing! They substituted all dishes with crawfish sue to my allergy. The flavors were delicate and the dishes were served quickly which I liked! Note: I was not hungry when I walked in and was not full when I walked out! (Speaking as a girl)

i went here for my bday! it was dimly lit, but it's really cool that the lights shine on the chefs in front of you and the background that has the map of the globe - oh, and the plates in front of you. like the work station where the chefs make the sushi is illuminated and it's so freaking cool to see. service was A1, absolutely no complaints about it. some came out faster than the other but gives my friend and i time to catch up on our drinks bc i was def drowning in all those drinks those wine and sake pairing were paired perfectly and i highly recommend it! food - absolutely delicious. flavors were complex and could not ask for anything better. i will say that i wish they played around with the textures to have an even better experience. oh and that fish broth in the glass cup? didn't expect it to be warm but it was great!!! oh, the one that was not my favorite was the cake pastry dish... everything was great until this one :/ mine felt a little dry so i was taken aback by this one all in all, i still think that mako is worth the drive, worth the visit! the ppl next to us were from oregon and traveled specifically for this place and i don't blame them bc it's def worth the stop in the windy city
Delicious all around.
They are so great at explaining everything for their courses and drinks. We chose to share the drink course that you can get separately. We accidentally drank one of the rounds too quickly and didnt get a chance to try it with the intended course so they gave us more! They really want you to experience the meal to its fullest. Even sharing between the two of us got us pretty tipsy! The food is so buttery and fresh. I was very surprised since we are not a city close to salt water. I would highly recommend this spot to any sushi/sake fanatic and continue to do so with my friends!

My GF and I came here for our anniversary to try out their omakase spread. All the photos are the various different things we tried along with an example of one of the sets of sushi menus The experience was amazing. Something we've always wanted to do and I'm glad Mako was able to deliver. It's an interesting experience and definitely one that makes you appreciate the work that goes into preparing quality fish and sushi. The restaurant, staff and food was all amazing. And we might just come back for our next anniversary to experience this amazing 15-16 course meal. One more time.
Incredible Omakase!
Without any doubt the finest sushi we have ever had. Many, many small and varied dishes, all artfully presented. OK, it is *expensive* Not exactly a casual night out. But, if you have something to celebrate, there could be no better restaurant.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it? |
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.

Give the best answerNewbie sellers— how fast do your reservations sell?
I have some reservations coming up tomorrow that have gotten lots of views but haven’t sold yet. I haven’t made a sale yet since I just joined this week. I keep lowering the price, but am worried they won’t sell. How long did it take you to sell your first reservations? And did you have success being reimbursed by AT for no-show or cancellation fees? Just looking for a little reassurance. Thanks!

I posted a request for a reservation this Thursday between 6:30 and 8 pm and initially the potential seller said it would be fulfilled by today. Now they changed it that they will only fulfill it by 5pm that same day. Basically I would have an hour and a half to get to the restaurant. Is this allowed?

This app is a catfish and overrun by people programming “bots” and algorithms. It makes it frustrating for someone not well versed in this to have any movement. I thought this would be a fun side hustle, but unfortunately it’s become like any other “side hustle”. Don’t waste your time with this crap. Not a question, just a suggestion. Also don’t pay these fake “gurus” hundreds of dollars to teach you. Might as well sign up for a software class. 😕
