Maha was highly recommended by a bartender at tapas
Maha was highly recommended by a bartender at tapas bar/restaurant "Movida". We were told we would not be disappointed. We made reservations for Sunday lunch. A beautiful room & great service. However, we were not aware that only option was a $75PP set menu (wine extra), no a- la-carte menu options! Food good (appetizers, main dish chicken), very good service. Surprised at paying bill when we were presented with $23. weekend surcharge !! ?? Total bill $273 AUS for 2 including tip & surcharge ! A bit spendy for what it was. BEWARE. Best to investigate prior to commitment.
Be the first to ReplyWelcome to a new level of dining experience in the most
Welcome to a new level of dining experience in the most unimposing building in Melbourne. This was a surprise dinner for our anniversary. From the moment we walked down the inviting stairwell, we knew we were in for not just a great meal but dining sophistication that we would remember for a long time.Maha is the genius creation of Shane Delia who keeps on creating and making places that are 'stand-alone' classy. The 'servers' all dressed in the same simple black slacks, vest and a striking gold tie - classy. Our server for the night was Libby, who greeted us with "happy anniversary" (yes, my partner had primed them about why we were there) and we were escorted to our table. I always like to take the table that looks into the room so I can watch the meals that are coming out but also generally observe the atmosphere of the restaurant."May I take your jackets?" from Libby. We are truly in the land of graciousness. We perused the all-encompassing drinks menu but had us at a sticking point - Gin, which one? Vodka, which one? Scotch, which one? Maha pride themselves on their extensive choices. There is an option to pair your wine with your meal, which had the sommelier busy, ensuring the food and wine complemented each other. We decided to go with cocktails and hence, bring on the margaritas! To start we were offered the usual water sparkling or still, of which the former is bottomless and continually topped up. Then arrived a Crimson Kiss and a Margarita that set the stage for the evening.Libby helped us with what to choose on the menu, explaining the options, upgrades and how we could switch out some food depending on our tastes. We chose the tasting menu, a five course selection of middle eastern culinary reverence.Initially, five dishes arrived at the table, Libby explaining each of them. I seriously wondered if we'd made the wrong choice, that the quantity of food in front of us would mean we'd be full too soon. Fortunately, it was just the right amount.Course 1 called Meze, consisted of several plates of flavour bombs that had layers of texture, colour and seasoning that had my palate in overdrive. The smoked hummus, celeriac, mushrooms and burnt butter with grilled flatbread had a combination of exciting flavours. Grilled house, harissa pickled cabbage, capsicum, lemon and parsley with warm olives were easy to graze on. The lamb kibbeh, ras el hanout roasted pumpkin yoghurt was skilfully prepared and a light portion of the Meze. The wagyu beef, glazed beetroot and hibiscus, pickled turnip, sheep sorrel was one of our favourites. I won't go through the entire menu except to say the wagyu beef croquettes were a stand out. Once the table was cleared of the almost 'licked clean' plates, a platter arrived on the table with two hot cloths and a sprig of rosemary. Nice touch. Time to freshen ourselves for what was coming next.Other courses consisted of dry aged Macedon Ranges duck breast with clove, roasted quince - cooked to pink perfection. Roasted bullhorn peppers, smoked eggplant and harissa, pickled daikon and orange tarator in a portion size that was welcomed after the first course. Dessert polished off the night with a light sutlac roasted rice parfait, sesame nougatine, rice ice cream honey and lemon. We were grateful for a light but glossy tantalizing dessert that was almost like a sorbet as it cleansed the palate.Between courses, the servers float in silently and sweep away the empty plates or wipe the table clean before the next course. The ambience felt like we were in an exclusive club, with subtle lighting and music that is soft enough not to annoy you but loud enough that everyone now and again my shoulders would move rhythmically to the beat.Disabled friendly with elevator available at street level. This is a standard of dining that may not be in everyone's budget but I encourage those who enjoy food to explore Maha and immerse yourself in classical Middle Eastern food in the 21st century.

Came here with a colleague for a nice dinner since we were from out of town and heard great things about Maha. We opted for the 6 course meal which was $115 pp and since I don't eat lamb, they were kind enough to switch it out and gave us a delicious fish option instead. We also upgraded to the wagyu rump 8+ and it was the highlight of the meal (we also tried the manti and I personally was not a fan). They also gave us two bags of their bread mix on our way out which was definitely interesting - we had to give these away since we were here visiting. Items I really enjoyed: Wagyu rump 8+ Hummus Dessert (beautiful presentation) Items I'd probably pass on if I had a choice: Wagyu beef manti (trust me, I recommend you supplement to the wagyu rump!) Smoke ocean trout - I don't know if it was just me but it kind of smelled like ammonia and I was not a fan.

This was the best dining experience of my life! Seriously! We had the vegetarian three course meal and every dish was delectable. The restaurant is pricey, but worth it. I will definitely go back next time I'm in Melbourne.
Be the first to ReplyI can't fault a single thing about Maha.
From the greeting at the door to the person topping up the wine to the waiter's superb treatment/knowledge...yep everything! The food was fab with each dish being explained perfectly and was tasted great to boot. And as a treat we got taken to the kitchen to explain the fab palette cleanser. Loved the whole experience. Can't recommend it enough.
Be the first to ReplyRumiWhat a lovely restaurant.
It's a 4.4 on my non app available scale. This is a lovely restaurant which delivers extremely well on style and food. The decor is black and gold. It's a stylish and sophisticated interior which welcomes. You get the general sense immediately you walk in that you're in the hands of people who know how to provide a superior dining experience. We chose the four course banquet which delivered extremely well. There is more than ample food in this option. The starters were amazing. The flat bread was absolutely beautiful and with hummus it was utterly extraordinary. Sounds strange to go off about a piece of bread but I've never tasted it's equal. It was exceptional. I also can't praise the delicate cucumber with black sesame speeds enough. It seems odd again to say say so, but the way cucumber is prepared at middle eastern inspired places like Maha and Rumi almost completely reinvents the vegetable for me. My dish of 2017 was the simple cucumber with dill in the seasonal feast at Rumi. It's done here beautifully at Maha too. We loved it, got quite distressed finishing it and wanted more. The spicy olives were a revelation too. Beautifully flavoured and neither too hard nor too soft, it'd be hard to do olives much better than they were done here tonight. They were delicious. The kingfish cerviche was gorgeous too but was a tiny serve for two and we looked over with alarm when the neighboring table scored a much larger offering. The salmon kibbeh was pleasant and served with an extraordinary crispy puffed bread the texture of which was incredible. Next course was borek with black garlic, spinach, feta and mushroom. I've had plenty of boreks in my time but none of them tasted anywhere near as good as this one. We went quietly nuts over this dish as it was utterly adorable. The quail with apricot was superb too. You cannot cook quail any better than this, I'd suggest. The meat was beautifully moist and the flavours divine. The lamb was pulled shoulder and slow cooked. It was lovely as well although less polished than the other dishes. The swordfish was lightly grilled served with capers and was very nice indeed. We also absolutely adored the charred broccoli tabouleh. It was divine. I cannot imagine the skill that went in to cooking this dish, ie to present such a gorgeous deep charred flavour but without it ever tasting burnt. We went nuts over this dish. It is amazing. The five year aged Persian rice was very fine as well, a lovely accompaniment to the other dishes. We chose a Saloman Gruner Veltliner for our main wine and it proved to be a sound choice which went well with most dishes. We also chose a glass of Tellurian Grenache from Heathcote to go with the meat dishes. Again, it was a good choice. The wine list is very good and not overdone. There are plenty of good wines to choose. The sweets were incredible. A dark chocolate parfait, Black tahini mousse and Turkish delight doughnuts. I wasn't prepared for how good these would be. They were outstanding deserts. We loved them and could not fault them in any way. The only slight downer on the night was that we were not permitted to take part of the dessert home with us in a doggy bag. The servings are generous here and we were both very full by the time dessert arrived. We wanted to eat half of the sweets and take half home to enjoy later but the possibility was snappily dismissed by our server which was immensely disappointing. We'd paid for the food and wanted to eat it. I think the non doggy bag policy is silly and a little mean. We picked forlornly at the remaining dessert for several minutes and ate probably half of what was left. It was strange to finish a lovely meal on a slightly down note like this.Overall, it's a very very good restaurant though. You feel good being there and the fit out out is lavish, impressive and generally very comfortable and pleasing. We were slightly perturbed by how close the tables were and heard lots of the next table's conversation and boy could one of them talk. But, we did our best to ignore them and concentrate on the very fine food which proved very easy. It's all about the food and most of the food is exceptionally good as is the overall experience. There's little doubt this is one of Melbourne's best restaurants and we will definitely return in the future.
Be the first to ReplyThis is one of my favorite good / affordable sushi joints .
Fish has always been very fresh when I've gone and they do a great job overall. Maguro, Sake, everything that I've gotten here has been excellent. While it is a cash only place they have an ATM inside and there are other ATMs in the nearby shops if needed.
Be the first to ReplyAfter reading the many great reviews about this place
After reading the many great reviews about this place decided to check it out. You should expect to spend 2.5-3 hours in this place if you ordered the 8 courses meal. Pretty expensive too ($180) so I would say go here if you really want to get the experience and have both the money and time to waste, otherwise do another restaurant caused I felt the price is a bit excessive given the portions they provided. The two dishes I enjoyed the most were the monkfish and the appetizers. The rest of the courses were presented really nicely but they tasted just ok.

They were celebrating an anniversary and in a temporary location while undergoing updates. Service was great. Food was spectacular.
Be the first to ReplyUpscale and delicious Lebanese.
Great service, awesome flavors, at a high price. I prefer menus where I can choose what I want. The lamb ribs were to die for.

Be the first to ReplySituated in a lane way that gives no real hint of anything
Situated in a lane way that gives no real hint of anything much in it, Maha is downstairs behind a simple sign, very subtle, very understated, and VERY Melbourne. We sat in a booth with candles lit around us, having arrived for dinner and were offered drinks and cocktails to start, as well as choosing sparkling or still water. We selected sparkling water for the evening and from that moment onwards our water glasses were refilled the entire night. We had a selection of 2, 4, 5 and 6 course meal to choose from and we selected the four course option. The 2 and 4 course were to "share", were as the 5 and 6 were individual portions. The first course, that fresh warm hummus, so light, and flavourful.. I'm still drooling just thinking about it as I write this, was only one of the many dishes that came out just for the first course. We ate everything that came out, the food was incredible, the service impeccable, the only dish that was largely untouched was our slow cooked lamb (on the 3rd course).. everyone at the table considered it a bit meh. Outside of this dish every other was empty. Maha has a great reputation for a great reason, this was my first time going, but it won't be my last.. that hummus is beckoning
