New places that I rarely go unless one of my friends mentioned it. We are trying our best to go to places we haven't been and sometimes it works out, other times its just meh. Mabel's Gone Fishing is one of the newer places in the North Park area where various small places are located. It's a walking area with bars and food shops around this block of University and 30th St. Hey they even have a Target mini around the corner. My expectations were high since it bills itself as a ginteria and oysteria. More of the oyster part and less the gin part. I rarely drink more than a cocktail nowadays. Reservations need to be made as it's a small place with walkins on a weekend harder to get. My friends who joined us were there previously so they have a better idea of the food and partly drinks. Mabel's is styled like a Spanish restaurant with cocktails and foods created for sharing. They do have entrees (just in case you are on a dinner date). Since most places rotate menus, I can not reassure anyone if a dish still will be served when you go. Shared food menus might vary a little. Catch of the day (grilled whole) is obviously based on what fish is available. We had the Snapper which came out beautiful. One question, we saw another table ordering the same and the server removed the bone in front of them. When we inquired later, they said, it was per server's ability to do it and request. So next time we will ask first. The rest of the menu seemed great for sharing, some were to go to but others I can leave. I ordered oysters and they were wonderful (market price since some were from Washington and some from BC) We also ordered mussels escabeche, olives, white wine on their distinct bottle, patatas bravas and for dessert, grilled Basque cheesecake. Overall we enjoyed our meal, although sound levels are pretty loud (small and many diners = loud). My first gin cocktail and it was pretty smooth - La Barceloneta. Will try another time, maybe not on a weekend night when it was super busy.
