Lovely atmosphere but too rushed at bar seating
We were excited to have an evening out at Louie on our visit to St. Louis but were disappointed because we our meal was so rushed at the bar and the food was just okay. From the moment we sat down and ordered drinks and apps, three different servers repeatedly asked us to place our orders for entrees. We finally did, to get them off our backs, and the entrees were brought out even before we finished our apps. All in all, we were seated, ate apps and entrees, and received our check much too quicklyโin less than 55 minutes. The cauliflower fritta was greasy, the eggplant dip was tasty, and the broccolini was nicely spicy but could have been slightly more tender. The pasta Bolognese dish was delicious. Given the excellent reviews we might give it another shot but will see if a table seating will be more enjoyable.
Be the first to ReplyAn unexpected gem.
In town for my Clayton High School reunion, and was taking a walk down memory lane. Happened upon Louie at around 6 pm on a Thursday night. They squeezed us in at the bar in front of the pizza oven, as long as we agreed to finish by 7:45. Very glad we didโa superb meal in every way, with super-attentive service all around. Added entertainment was chatting with the wood-fire pizza-maker, who was phenomenally competent at his job and friendly to boot. Honestly, I canโt remember a more enjoyable evening in a restaurant in a long time. If I still lived here, I would return often.

Love the vide the whole Demun area is going out and with the addition of Louis in the mix, a true culinary adventure awaits. Let me first say we were they on a bust Saturday evening and it was loud. They have taken measures to soften the noise level with sound board on the celling, but it was still very loud. The staff was amazing, very attentive and worked like a well oiled machine. The helped each other and we were never without anything. Thanks staff. Food was spot on. We had the Cauliflower Fritto. Served all Dente and the Aoli was a good complement. We also had the Grilled Spanish Octopus, grilled very nice to get some caramelization on it and served on a bed of chickpeas and Soppressata. Our Min course was the Mussels, Again, great taste, a bit small in size, but plenty to make a meal with. Only downside, was the bread that it came with was over grilled and was burnt. The next main dish was the Grilled Tenderloin. I asked for it to be cooked med. and it came out med rare. I am ok with that, but when I ask for it to be prepared one way and they cut the medallions in the kitchen after its cooked, they should see it's not what the ticket says. Regardless. it was very tender, tasty and the Salsa Verde with was much more like a chimichurri sauce was great. The crowd was very young, dressed like it was a formal dance they were attending and yes, I have to say way to loud for my liking. I am not old, nor was I looking for a quite dinner, but I could hardly hear the waitress talking about the specials.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, indifferent service
Summary: very good food, very loud space, very indifferent service. I was in from out-of-town, joining a friend for dinner at an overdue catch-up. We had a reservation late on a weekday evening. The restaurant was very busy; every table and bar seat appeared to be occupied. That made for a buzzy, fun feeling. That said, the restaurant is VERY loudโprobably a little too loud. The menu is an appealing mix of appetizers and main courses; it has an Italian bent. Our food was consistently delicious: fried cauliflower was excellent, in the style of fried calamari; olives were wonderfully flavorful; mussels were plump and in a wonderful broth; pappardelle was perfect. No complaints on the food. The meal was harmed, however, by lousy service. There were three issues: one, our server kept disappearing. One should not (especially at a restaurant of this price point) have to consistently flag down other staff to find the server assigned to your table; we had to do this to place our order, to get our bill, etc. Two, our server promised to โcourse outโ the food; he didnโt do so. Instead, we got a torrent of food, followed by a very long wait in-between appetizers and mains. Third, our server just wasnโt very friendly; his service (when present) was performative, not warm. All in allโa little disappointing. Great food, fun and chic (if painfully loud) space, but lousy service that outweighed the other positives.

Had another fabulous meal at Louie this week. Always warm and welcoming, yet professional. The waiters and waitresses know the menu and wines. The food is spectacular, and the pastas are the best in St. Louis The breads are wonderful and enough to get the most avid Keto dieters to fall of the wagon. The white bean hummus with pita and focaccia with olive oil are musts, have both! Special shout out to our waiter Rickey who made the evening special. Yes, the safety protocols made us feel very comfortable.

Perfectly cooked pork chop. So delicious. We stumbled on this restaurant thinking we were going to the bar next door, but we are so happy we found this place because it is now one of our favorites. We sat on the sidewalk and had a beautiful dining experience on a summer night. Our waiter was excellent. Knowledgeable, honest, and genuine. It is pricey but so worth it!

Just go now! The atmosphere is so swanky cozy and the food is incredible! Order the brussel sprouts and roman gnocco. OMG is all I can say. I've heard the cauliflower and egg plant dip is also delish! Plus, I believe there is a vegan ice cream sandwich. Need I say more?! GO NOW!

Very crowded on an early (5PM) Monday night. Would highly suggest reservations be made for anytime you go. Mostly Italian related fare. They can do vegan and vegetarian. Excellent server, wine list etc. Get there early!

Louie does it all well. An enthusiastic welcome at the door, perfectly-balanced service by engaging servers, a quality menu that, though small, offers a great variety of original dishes. The appetizers are all superb and they do chicken (my favorite here, but nowhere else) like no one else does. Their pastas are home made and excellent, too. Ask for the little table by the front window, it's a quieter spot and out of the traffic lanes. This is a place I could eat at every night.
Be the first to ReplyBest Italian restaurant in STL, so far...
Nice bread, good olive oil amuse bouch (they don't do this in Italy, only America). Wood fired oven pizza was above average, but the crust was "interesting", a little more toothy than my Naples Neopolitan style pizza standard. The Broccolini was AMAZING, just as good as any in the NYC area or LA. Pana Cora dessert was great tasting, too. Olives were meh, not as good as Olio's olives. Overall, the best Italian restaurant in St Louis for modern, updated Italian food with warm and lively hospitality. A little expensive, but normal for new, upscale restaurants. The place was almost packed on a Wednesday night, so obviously very popular with locals.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Meal & Wine Recommendations
I read about Louie online before we visited and decided we should try it with my sister and her boyfriend who live in St. Louis. The area is very cute with the restaurant sandwiched between a Kaldi coffee shop and another restaurant. We were worried we couldn't find it because they only have a small lighted sign at night. We were immediately sat and our waitress was good, but not great. She didn't seem to have the knowledge needed to recommend wine and explained she had only worked there for 3 months. I get that, but that is your job. The food was great! We started with the eggplant dip and proscuitto plate. The dip was phenomenal and I highly recommend it, the proscuitto plate can be skipped in my opinion. For entrees we ordered the chicken (I read about it online), steak, Gnocco and a special with ravioli with sweet corn. All were good, but the Chicken and Gnocco were heads and tails better than the rest. For dinner we had the panna cotta, which I highly recommend. I loved how the panna wasn't sweet and the topping is like crack. I could have eaten it every day. Soooo good.
