I was so delighted to have the opportunity to try their tasting menu as an "influencer". So I brought a friend with me and we have the option to select four dishes and one drink for each of us. The following are the dishes I got along with the ratings based on my expertise with Shanghainese cuisine: - Yi Du Xian Soup (7/10): It basically has the essences of the authentic Yi Du Xian. The material in the soup is pretty abundant, including salty pork, pork belly, bamboo shoots, bok choy, tofu skin and shiitake mushroom. The portion is way enough for 2-3 people. It is light and flavorful and my friend was very into it. However, in my memory, Yi Du Xian supposed to be very tasty because of the flavor from the salty pork which I don't find much from this soup. With that being said, the soup is good but it can be better. - Dong Po Pork with Buns (8/10): Dong Po Pork is basically braised pork belly. I love the texture of the pork which is so tender and soft and it can melt right away in your mouth. That is some skill they mastered to make the meat that way. The buns can help to reduce the greasy from the fat. It is a smart combo. The downside is the flavor of the meat is not strong enough. The sweetness in the bun kind of overpowered the meat flavor. So I think the meat flavor can be enhanced a bit. After all, the pork is the leading role in this dish. - Soft Shell Crab with Rice Cake (10/10): My friend and I both agreed this is the best dish I had. Everything is just perfect. The rice cakes are in thin slices and not doughy at all. Soft shell crab is literally so soft and chewable and flavorful. Also, there's no any fishy sense from the crabs. Very impressive!- Braised Yellow Croaker (9/10): The fish is very tender and delicious. The dish has ginger, garlic, soy sauce and oyster sauce which create phenomenal taste for the fish. One point off is because I find it a bit too sweet. Usually you need to add some sugar to highlight the flavor but it is important to make sure the right amount of it. For the drinks, we got Adorable Woman and The Wound of War. They both are very decent. Not light and not too strong. Also, I find it interesting that the names of the cocktails on the menu are all referenced from a Taiwanese singer's (Jay Chou) songs. I guess the creator must be a loyal fan of the singer. lolAdditionally, we also got a free dessert since I checked in on Yelp. We got Sticky Rice with Lotus Root (9/10). It is the best lotus root dessert I have tried so far in New York. Some sticky rice in a few bites is still a bit hard to chew which means the rice was not steamed enough yet. Also, I think it will be better to add more honey. Since it is a dessert, it should be sweeter. The atmosphere is very great and gets busy around 7-8 pm. It is not a huge restaurant, but enough for some groups. You can also just sit by the bar to have some drinks. I highly recommend Little Alley if you are interested in Shanghainese food. The dishes may not be 100% the same as the ones I had from my hometown but pretty close enough. I will definitely come back to try some other dishes from the regular menu!
