What a culinary delight! We were the first guests to arrive at the start of dinner service during a mid-week evening. We were warmly welcomed by the coat check host. He confirmed our reservation calling us by name. Our seating preference was requested, and we were shown to the main dining room. Joan Miró art work, large decorative vases of flowers and subtle classical music surrounded us. Fabulous. Our waiter, the warm and open José as well as his associates exuded pride and deep knowledge of the evening's beverage and culinary offerings. There are prix fixe meals, but one can order ala carte, we learned. My personal standouts were: the Wild Mushroom Soup, and Peking Duck with lentils and mandarin glaze. I finished with Artisan Cheeses that included the mushroomy Normandy Camembert - a flavor I've only experienced once before! The wine list is extensive: half-bottles as well as by the glass, for those who prefer more options. I recommend looking at the digestif menu too. Varied, surprising and good! I am including a couple photos of the Ladies Room on the upper level: a meticulously clean, elegantly linened, relaxing space.

Summary - go here if you enjoy fine dining in a way that is very different than all the current in vogue trends. Here you get your own table. Here you get service as if you were the only one in the restaurant by people who have been serving the most discriminating dinners for decades. Here you will be treated with respect and deference. Here you will taste french cooking as it was and deservedly was considered the finest european cuisine for decades. I have been eating at high end restaurants for 50 years. There was one restaurant in St. Louis that matched this kind of service back then. I was reminded of those memories when the crumbs from each service were swept from the table. I was reminded of this service when my wine glass never was empty. When the wine was presented with all the flourish including an explanation of region and history. I don't know where the other reviewers were or what their problems were with this place as they described it as pretentious or rigid or stuffy. my god it was a joyous place. i have to think those folks brought attitude to it and so it just was reflected back to them.

Be the first to ReplyExceptional service - very attentive.
All experiences are "fixed price" which I believe is about 5 courses. However, you can pick from multiple in each category. The mushroom bisque was phenomenal as was the foie gras with plums. Portions were in the small side but we left full. Les Nomades strays from the newer restaurant feels which are industrial and swank and takes you make to old school Chicago class.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and service.
I go there whenever I need I have had a long day and need a nice relaxing dinner. I usually start with a martini and then order a bottle of wine with dinner. Only issue is the jacket requirement.
Be the first to ReplyWe've bee dining here for years.
It's always an extremely classy dinner experience. The sedate atmosphere encourages quiet enjoyment.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant NEVER fails.
From the moment you arrive, you are treated like royalty. The ambience and service are superior. With each course, flavors awaken, tease and delight your senses. The beauty of each dish, the aromas, and finally, the exquisite taste. Some dishes an explosion of flavors, others are subtle. All make my eyes close with delight when the food touches my palate. I first experienced this restaurant in my 20s and I fell in love. I knew that classic french cuisine is the basis of culinary excellence. This restaurant imprinted on me the myriad reasons why this is true. I am still in love with this restaurant.

This place has been around for ages and there is a reason for that. Food tastes great and the service is excellent. You can pick from a four course or 5 course menu and what I love about it is that they actually have a cheese course offering. As mentioned the food is outstanding and the portions are extremely generous. However, one of the reasons why I am only giving this place 4 stars is because I felt the plating could have been given a little more attention. Another thing that I feel let's the place down is the decor is a bit dated now. It hasn't changed in the last 15 years since I first went there. Saying that the meal is EXTREMELY reasonably priced for what you get and the service puts some Michelin star restaurants to shame. Overall, I highly recommend this place.

We were in Chicago for a quick birthday dinner and a show weekend. I was excited to try this restaurant, but I ended up feeling so uncomfortable due to the treatment of the staff.First, the restaurant couldn't find my reservation which was not a good start to treating my sweet husband to dinner for his birthday. i ended up showing the restaurant the confirmation text, but it was an uncomfortable start. We forgot my husbands suite at home, so we had to borrow a jacket and it was terribly small... he is trim but tall. Apparently they had a lot of jackets .... for smallmen;our fault for rushing and forgetting but alas... it was a weird solution. When I was choosing wine I asked for a couple of suggestions of French wine and they said quite loud"this wine and that wine are budget friendly" ..I never said I was on a budget.. on the contrary, I had no price limit. My husband and I were very uncomfortable and felt their condescending tone and judgment was uncalled for and made them look uncouth. i have traveled extensively ..I have eaten at much more refined and expensive restaurants ; I hold a French and American passport, so I know good French food and service-in this case, I felt the service was rude.. too talkative.. judgemental and unreasonably stuffy for what they were offering. The tenderloin and suffle was good. The escargot was over flavored and the duck was chewy. This restaurant was not worth the $550.00 price tag.. with the exception of the above stated dishes and the wine.

Timeless, beloved French townhouse dining that remains a jewel to my husband and I. They have mastered the balance of formality and friendliness. We've dined here a few times now, and have had wonderful experiences each time. Mind you, I do not favor French cuisine (prefer light, eastern Mediterranean food above all), but truly did enjoy my meal here. We have done both the 4-course and 5-course menus. Caviar (not Beluga or Ossetra but a good Sevruga)- 4Escargots (mushrooms, leeks, garlic)- 4.5Foi Grois (premier source of it)- 4 (my husband loved it, but I... less so)Lobster salad- 4.5Soups- 5Rosemary Lamb and Veal medallions- 5!Dover sole and potatoes- 5Duck with lentils- 5! RECOMMENDRib-eye with farro- 5Vanilla creme brûlée with berries- 5!Carrot cake with blueberries- 5!Coffee souffle- 5!Lattes- 4Highly recommend for a special dinner or occasion. Leave the little ones at home. Merci.

Surely this location must be in contention for a Michelin star. The food is exquisite. Service equally outstanding. We have visited 2 times and each time left extremely satisfied. I think by far the best French restaurant in Chicago!
Be the first to ReplyWe had dinner here after thanksgiving.
It's really good and better than I expected. The bread was crunch, not too hard. My appetizer was lobster and scallop. It's very fresh and tasty. I did like wild mushroom soup. The wild mushrooms were chewy. The seafood dish, lamb and veal dish all tasted excellent. Had wonderful time with family after thanksgiving. Highly recommend it.

If you are looking for exquisite French food in amazing atmosphere this should be your first choice! Why 3 stars? Because my family brought a very special bottle of 1988 Bordeaux to celebrate a birthday and the sommelier did not open it in front of us! How terribly unprofessional! I can't get over the nagging feeling that he kept a glass for himself. We did offer him a tasting, which he accepted, but I'm still upset. So eat here just don't expect true French white glove service.
Be the first to ReplyMore timeless than trendy.
Came here for my husband's 43rd birthday and we were definitely on the younger side of the dining crowd. But who cares about trends when each dish was executed beautifully. There are classics, and a couple updated takes of classic French dishes. Service was impeccable including a warm and friendly host that literally came out of the restaurant to track down the valet attendant. (Next door at the hotel)Of note: The halibut with chanterelle sauce --mouth watering. The rib eye amazing. My only regret the duck...the two tables closest to us ordered it and were ooh and ahh-ing. Be aware no cocktail menu just wine. Very reasonably priced for fine dining, this was our first time there but we will add this one to the rotation. The soufflé alone will bring you back for a special night out or to make an average day a little special.
Be the first to Reply5 stars.
A rare gen. Food Rich sauces, fresh ingredients OMG Amazing soufflé of Gran Marnier liqueur with actual spirit in the mix and as a sauce. The Lobster salad with fresh mango, I got wagyu short ribs, again, the sauce was so rich and opulent. Yummy. Seared Foi Gras appetizer was cooked perfectly with a carmelized sear. The food was really fantastic. Service provided a jacket. Loved that they were attentive but didn't interrupt our conversation. Ambiance was quiet at first but warmed up with relaxing and drinks and comfort foods. Maybe it could have improved with some traditional French music in the background. Otherwise, great experience and definitely worth the price.

Not as expected, my husband wanted to surprise me with a tasting menu and wine pairing. He arranged this with the owner but much to our chagrin, noone seemed to know what we were talking about including the owner. We had the prix fix menu instead and it was mostly good. The souffle was fantastic. Our server was lovely and did an amazing job. The ambiance was stuffy, it appears this restaurant mostly caters to old money. I can not recommend this restaurant.

There's just something about a restaurant staff in tuxedos, incredible art on the walls, and an "Oh So French" menu that just sings to me. This was certainly the case at Les Nomades last night. There are still some restaurants (not many mind you) with a dress code; men, you need to walk in wearing a jacket and preferably a tie and women, leave your jeans at home asthis place just reeks of grandeur! We actually didn't come here for dinner. After having sushi and beer down the street, we started walking home, and my wife uttered to me, "I feel like a chocolate souffle." Well, always willing to please, we walked to Les Nomades. Now we weren't dressed like I mentioned above, so they sat us in the bar. I get it!We order mineral water with gas, a Brandy Alexander, and the requested chocolate souffle. Now, I knew through experience that when you're ordering your dinner in a French restaurant, you also order your dessert at the same time, if you want a Souffle. This confection takes an hour to prepare correctly. Not wanting to wait that hour, we got it sooner than we should have, but it was still excellent. The chocolate they used was the finest. Our Brandy Alexander was excellent, and the service was fantastic. I will definitely come back here, properly attired, and ordering my dessert an hour in advance. I'm sure I will crank my 4-star review to a 5-star review at that time!

Its was lovely to be reminded of how service and beautifully prepared cuisine can go together. This is no place for the hipsters. Almost a shrine to gastronomy part Escoffier part Robuchon. Foie was perfectly complimented by accompanying gastrique but sweet vs sour. Mushroom soup reminded how delicious it could be. Oysters were fresh and well schucked. Cassoulet could have benefited from a tiny Toulouse sausage but the veal and duck were delicious and the jus mopped up with the fresh bread. Cheese was delicious. The piece de resistance was an enormous GRand Marnier souffle , highly alcoholic but in a good way. Service was spot on , courses not arriving too quickly and wine poured at the right moment. The maitre D balancing humour with professionalism. The upstairs room comfortable , reminded me of La Grenouille in NYC. Wines are of course expensive but you can just about find for $125...The overall cost was $250 a person before service. If I was a Russian oligarch looking to spend my money quickly I would dine here alot..
Be the first to ReplyClassic French restaurant with a set menu.
It is pricy but you will be treated well. Think pressed and white linen napkins. The food was lovely, and the soufflé was wonderful - the atmosphere was definitely, as others have said, more on the stuffy side. Most of the other customers we saw were elderly ladies and gentlemen. We came here for a holiday meal and I felt the setting very much embraced that formal "fancy" meal for an occasion. I prefer a more modern restaurant that doesn't feel as traditional. I would say the portions are sizable - we actually started feeling sick at the dessert course because everything was starting to feel heavy and weigh on our stomachs, which was a shame because we were really looking forward to the soufflé (and would say it was delicious too but not after you've stuffed to the brim). Wish there was options for some a la carte just so we didn't have to order a full set to get soufflé!

When you visit Les Nomades, you are unknowingly getting a bit of a history lesson in culinary arts. Few realize that Roland Liccioni was the chef at Le Francais ...the restaurant that elevated fine dining in the US. Roland and his wife own and operate Les Nomades and you will not find a better dining experience in Chicago if great food is your vision. The space is intimate and romantic but not sterile like many great restaurants that try too hard. It has a relaxed French atmosphere. First, the service was impeccable...like a Four Seasons....people catered to your every whim from taking our coats and boots (it was a blizzard outside), to taking our drink orders, to explaining the menu and always checking on us to make sure everything was perfect. This creates the perfect backdrop for the star of the show...the food. How about this for a menu? Foi gras....warm lobster salad...wagyu...and grand marnier souffle. All paired with perfect wines...from rose champagne to start...to Sancerre...to St. Esteph...to Sauternes. I am not sure I have ever had a better meal. Sometimes, "old school" isn't out of touch or long in the tooth. Sometimes, "old school" kicks the upstart kids behinds and shows them how it is done. Bravo, Roland and Mary Beth....I think the Michelin star doesnt even begin to the tell the story of your amazing restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyOk, for American version of fine French dining, but the bar
Ok, for American version of fine French dining, but the bar is high at this price point. All the food is prepared and presented well, but it lacks the same spring you find in other places of this caliber. Now, if you want a fine French dining experience, try it yourself, could have just been a off night.
