Outstanding dinner!
What a sweet restaurant in downtown San Rafael! The ambience was romantic. The roast chicken and roasted potatoes were so fresh and cooked perfectly. Creme brรปlรฉe for dessert was excellent . And the service was professional and friendly. A great dinner overall.

Awful awful awful! Can't believe they are still in business. I've walked by regularly over the last year and a half and always wondered why they are either closed or mostly empty. No more. We arrived at 7:30 on a Saturday night to 3 tables taken. The owner was seated at the entrance with a couple and couldn't care less if we were there or not. He proceeded to insult my partner as if joking and told us to sit wherever. We sat and sat and sat and 5 minutes later, flagged the lone server ask asked for water. We then waited another 5 minutes to no menus or service before we had to flag him again and asked for a menu. He proceeded to tell us the owner would come over and discuss the dinner with us. Weird. The server had to go speak to the owner to come talk to us, and he eventually did, only to tell us he would decide what wine he thought we would like and walked back to his friends. The server poured us two glasses of red with no explanation and then brought us the bottle to show us what he had poured, after we asked. A Sonoma red. LOL. Another 5 minutes go by, no menu, no explanation. We were so uncomfortable by this point, we upped and left. Perhaps the owner thinks himself genius and his food world class but as far as I was concerned, I wasn't going to wait two hours to find out.
Be the first to ReplyThe worse restaurant I've been to.
The worse restaraunt I've been to. We were met by a smelling alcohol gentleman (maybe the owner or manager?) . There was no menu (no hard copy or online), no prices or wine list . All information is delivered to you by this very strange behaving owner. He said - "He is the menu". We did not get any idea how much it costs, what each dish includes. And then we were waiting an hour to be served. The food is ok. Will never come back and would not recommend it.

Nice food, good quality. The service is with a smile. There is also a grocery store where you can buy all kinds of typical items available in France: Dijon mustard, harissa in a tube, biscuits, cookies, sausage, wine, and more.

My wife took me out to dinner for my birthday because she knows I love sweetbreads and it was wonderful.

A must go!!!
Their French Market is wonderful
OK this is not really about the restaurant although it is also very good. This is about the little French Market they have attached to the restaurant. Several things I like about this store, the cheese is amazing. A beautiful display of French Cheeses in a large special cooling locker with large glass windows so you can ooh and ahh at them. The next is Duck Fat. If you like to cook beef there is nothing like cooking them in Duck Fat. The last and the best is in their freezer. Inside you will find all sorts of goodies but the best is their BUTTER CROISSANTS. If you are like me you must be frustrated at the lack of good Croissants there are in Marin. Everywhere you go you have bakeries that sell what they call Croissants for $4.00 apiece. Now if they really were Croissants I might even put out the cash, but they are puffed up doe balls, no flaky crust, no buttery taste, and the shape of a blimp. At Le Comptoir you can buy a pack of Croissants frozen take them home and bake them yourself. Be sure you read the directions as we thought that they were mini Croissants but if you take the amount out of the package that you want to bake, leave them out overnight in a baking tray on baking paper, the next morning you will find that they have grown in size. Pre-heat the oven to 350, bake for 20 minutes and bang you have real French Croissants. Wonderful to finally get the real thing!!!!

Downtown San Rafael is quite charming, as is this traditional French bistro with bistro cuisine done very well. A modest menu of traditional dishes. Good service.

Our first visit to this bistro was great with good service and food. But the last two visits have slipped terribly. Our visit on a quiet Sunday evening had miserable food. The 'porchetta' was old and tired - refried slices of rolled pork that were a few days old, an overcooked burger and profiteroles with beautifully presented old pastry shells filled with supermarket level ice cream. The wines were good and the service from both the front desk and our waiter was attentive and charming. But the food was old, overcooked and expensive ($100 pre tip with a shared dessert and no appetizer).
Be the first to ReplySuch a gem. High quality French bistro food, always good alway welcoming
So fortunate to have this bistro in our little city. The food is consistently good, and the vibe is energetic and happy. Most items seasonal, locally sourced and very fresh. Love the little gem salad, the salmon dinner, the roasted cauliflower and the roasted chicken is very nice. Good selection of French wines and a number of beers on tap too.

This is a very busy place so it must be good we thought. The service was excellent, the food was not, just normal. if you know French bistro food like I do and like I love don't go there. You can still have a nice time with some good wine and good friends but the food is so average that I forgot about it. very nice was the little market with French products but they were so pricey that I thought each piece was flown in separately from France.

Pauvre France is all I could think of, while falling from the excitement of reading the menu and the promise of some real french bistro cuisine to what arrived in our plates and the excruciating pain of trying to find anything pleasant in them.
We started with an onion soup, a good choice usually to start a dinner, but this time it made me wonder how expensive onions are in San Rafael for these was a quarter of one in my soup, as to the cheese we all know it's always expensive, which is probably why there wasn't much of it either. Water is free though, and they must know that there, since there was a lot of it in my bowl. Hot water for a starter, thank you, Next !
Next was the moules mariniรจres with french fries and aรฏoli. The usual subtitle on moules frites is "a plate to die for", I must say I did die, not so much for it but more because of it. The fries were cold and uncooked (mmmmm the yummy taste of raw potato), the aรฏoli was..... Aรฏe and the mussels proved one more time that you just can't use any cheap wine to cook and if you just don't add a pound of sugar to try turning it into a sweet wine, all it makes is a bad wine with a ton of sugar.
My last ray of hope was when I saw a Profiteroles au Chocolat passing in front of me, it woke up my Evil Knievel side and dared me to try one... Bad idea (another one...), the puffs were frozen, the chocolate sauce couldn't hide it's Hershey's industrial origin, and the vanilla ice cream was probably on sale at Walmart for no one else would surely have dared to buy it.
At this point, my one dream was to pay my bill and run home to wash my teeth, which I did while looking at Trip Advisor to find another French restaurant that could clean my mind of this painful disaster (which I did find by the way, that will come in another review)
The menu does say that they are not responsible for lost items but I do need to add that I lost my appetite on the way. Although I'm not sure appetite can be classified as an item, I still think someone should be held responsible for that !
Really good time!
My boyfriend and I tried to make a reservation but they didn't have anything before 7:30 so we sat at the communal high top tables. I honestly didn't think my bf would be impressed since he grew up in a French restaurant but we had a great time. Our waitress was one of the best I've ever had - friendly but not invasive, knowledgeable but if she wasn't sure I saw her ask - plus I always respect someone's preference on a food item but not pushing you in one direction or another. We got the bone marrow appetizer which was amazing. He had the veal and I had the roasted chicken and it had the most crispy skin I've ever tasted! There was a mix up in the kitchen so it took a little while to get our food but our waitress was constantly checking on us and made sure we knew everything she could do was being done. The ice cream is delicious and she even comped us some free dessert wine/apertif. Reasonable prices for the quality, chairs could be improved but overall we had a great date night here!

Very bright clean location-- friendly staff-- good service
The salads and the onion tart were very good
My scallops and shrimp were just so so. My wife's duck leg
was not prepared properly-parts under cooked. Both lacked "flavor"
The bread seemed dry and lacked flavor. The wines were fair to good
I think that there are better restaurants for the price
