Picked up a light dinner from Laos In Town which turned out
Picked up a light dinner from Laos In Town which turned out to be tasty and good value for money. I ordered the Crispy Rice Salad with Sour Pork, the Poh Pia (Veggie Spring Rolls) and some sticky rice. The Crispy Rice Salad was very good. The salad came with the right amount of lettuce in which to wrap the crispy rice and the lettuce was fresh and crisp. The leaves were also big enough to make eating the crispy rice and pork easy and satisfying. The actual crispy rice with pork was great; the pork, which seemed to be a sausage, was sour and tender while the crispy rice contrasted well with the onions and lettuce. The Poh Pia was also tasty. The vegetables inside the spring roll had a distinct flavor and great texture. The sticky rice portion was worth the small price of $2, which I appreciated. The salad and spring rolls were also reasonably priced, especially given the restaurant's location in a populated part of Noma. Despite a consistent crowd, the pickup took less than 15 minutes from the moment I placed the online order to when the dishes were ready. I appreciated the promptness and will likely be back.

As a new Laotion in DC, I was very excited to learn that I lived right next to a Lao restaurant; However, I've been a bit disappointed with the authenticity and flavors of the food. I initially purchased Orm (Gai), which is one of the dishes I ask my mom to make every time I visit home. It's a stew with very aromatic herbs and is supposed to pack a punch of spice from the Thai chilis. When I got the orm, I was overall disappointed. It was more like a soup with all the ingredients in it rather than a stew with a thicker consistency. Additionally, they used slices of chicken breasts which I wasn't a fan of.I then ordered the Lit Signature Salad because it looked amazing from the pictures. This was supposed to be a pungent, spicy papaya salad with pieces of nam (fermented pork) and vermicelli rice noodles. I was expecting lots of padek (fermented fish sauce) based on how dark the pictures looked, but instead what I got was something that tasted like a som tum from a Thai restaurant which aren't the same thing. Additionally, the portion was extremely small.Overall, I'd say the food is meh. If you're looking to be "introduced" to Lao cuisine and find it too taboo to eat at an authentic restaurant, I'd say give this place a try. They definitely have gentrified the food to be more friendly towards folks who haven't had Lao food, which I get. The place itself is very cute and the staff are always nice.

This was truly one of the best and most memorable meals I've had in a while. The combination of flavors and textures were unlike anything I've ever had- SO delicious. If I lived in DC I would go all the time! The service was great and friendly at the atmosphere was lively but not too loud. This was such an enjoyable meal.

Laos in Town was a real treat. I enjoyed my meal very much, the tea, the nice atmosphere, and a very friendly service. I am definitely coming back.
Be the first to ReplyI live really close but it never came in.
I was missing out, it was a really cool authentic modern vibe. Food was just amazing and the cocktails are to die for. I had the humming bird and the ORM. Then to top it off had a fresh Thai tea cake. Just an amazing hidden gem.
Be the first to ReplyService was extremely rude.
My server came to the table immediately with an attitude and tried kicking me and my roommate out when we did not order immediately as we were taking our time while working on homework. There was no wait/dining room empty... She said table is reserved for customers like I was not one? Manager was apologetic but I am left confused ....
Be the first to Replyreally good vegan options.
The tofu curry, tofu northern noodle, crispy rice tofu and tofu wok noodle were all solid.

My partner and I also got a whole fried rockfish recently that was absolutely delicious. Great regular spot.

I was very pleasantly surprised by Laos In Town! My husband heard great things about the restaurant, so we thought we'd check it out. I'm so glad we did. As soon as you arrive, you take in the calm, beautiful decor and the delicious aroma of the food. I ordered a Thai Iced Tea and my husband selected the Mist of Mekong drink, which tasted like one of the best Hot Toddys you could imagine. For an appetizer, we chose Poh Pia, which were crispy, flavorful spring rolls with chili sauce served on the side. For our mains, I ordered the Khua Khao, a wonderful chicken fried rice with cabbage, Chinese broccoli, carrots and topped with fried shallots. My husband raved about his Khao Poon Pla, a creamy fish stew. Our waiter was very attentive, friendly and helpful. My only complaint was the size of our table. We were seated at what looked like lounge tables for people to enjoy cocktails and maybe a shared a appetizer. Things got a little crowded with two drinks, water glasses, our entrees, which were served in rather large, but beautiful plates and bowls, and a dinnerware holder. I understand the restaurant is most likely trying to utilize as much space as possible, but instead of having five tiny tables (where there was maybe one foot in between each table), patrons would be much more comfortable with three to four slightly larger tables.Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Laos In Town and can't wait to visit again!

Laos in Town- one of 36 spots in DC awarded Michelin's Bib Gourmand award. Overall, I'd give it a 4.5 but as yelp doesn't allow half star ratings, we'll round it up to a 5.Decor: SO fun! I wish I had more pictures. Lots of fun textures and colors.Appetizer: We tried the Calamalao. I did like that it had a very light breading- I don't like when the squid is so deep fried that you can't even taste it. The squid itself was essentially unseasoned, but the dish as a whole (including the veggie and sauce) was very tasty and had a little kick of spice that I loved. It was more than enough for 2.Main: I got the Khua Mee. Every bite packed a punch of lime, and I loved the crunchy bean sprouts. It was filling. Drinks: I tried the house draft beer, I can't remember the exact name but it was light and crisp but was a little small.I look forward to coming back and trying more of the menu items in the future!
Be the first to ReplyThe food was super salty and it was super hot inside.
We got the pork rice and would not recommend.
Be the first to ReplyI was pleasantly surprised with this one! My friend
I was pleasantly surprised with this one! My friend recently went vegan so that made choosing a restaurant a bit difficult since I don't have any food restrictions, but we settled on this restaurant. I wasn't too excited but wanted to catch up with my friend anyway. I'm so glad I went! I ordered the chive cake and thought it was amazing! I wish it was double the amount on the plate. My friend ordered crispy vegetable spring rolls and she was very pleased. For my main course I ordered the Northern Noodle. At first when my dish came out the chicken was still pink on the inside so they took it back to the kitchen and later came back with the chicken cooked all the way through. The sauce could have used a little bit more salt but it was still pretty flavorful. My friend ordered the tofu wok noodle...I'm assuming she enjoyed it because she finished it while I was waiting for my chicken to be completely cooked lol. For an alcoholic beverage I ordered a hummingbird. It was very tasty! Not sure if it was very strong but nonetheless still good. I will be back!

I've never had Laos food before so I dropped into Laos in Town since I was nearby. The menu seemed similar to Thai food. Deciding between the two chicken and rice dishes and the wok noodles, my server suggested the noodles. The wok noodles were flat rice noodles stir-fried with chicken and egg. It was good, but could use a little more seasoning or sauce. I also had the Sangkaya for dessert, which was egg custard with sticky rice and coconut cream. It was served warm and was so delicious.Service was great. The restaurant was spacious and had nice decor.
Be the first to ReplyOur server Lucas did a great job.
Made several recommendations and all were hit. Excellent vegan selections and two whole fish options. Great value for some delicious food.

Stopped in while I was in town and was intrigued by the menu options. The grilled pork shoulder was tasty but served with an over abundance of lettuce. I had the Khua Khao which was a tasty version of chicken fried rice, with even a sweetness to it. We also ordered the Laab Moo which was good, but could have used a bit more spice or a sauce for flavor. The reason we didn't rate higher was the $3 price tag for a can of coke and the service was rather lackluster.
Be the first to ReplyThe best calamari ever.
Just enough spice, perfectly paired with green onion and other herbs.
Be the first to ReplyGood food.
3.5 stars due to everything else...A few complaints: - note: we were a big group of 8, and it took us a while to order at first so may have contributed to our mediocre service-When we were there it was hot AF ... kind of miserable without a/c, which was turned up finally around 7 or 8pm when we were leaving. The ceilings are really high so it probably takes a lot of energy to cool. -Service was spotty, probably because it was super busy and understaffed. Barely got water refilled, dishes piled up. Couldn't even ask for the check- The availability of desserts was not known by all staff. We waited awhile for the egg tart only to be told they were out, and they had to revise our bill. -Some of the food was very very spicy. Need more notification! It made for an even sweatier meal. - we were asked by staff "how much longer we were expecting to be there" when in fact we had been waiting for our server to bring the check byThe food is good, I loved it when I came for lunch on a weekday and service was standard. It wasn't very pleasant when we came on a Saturday night. Will still come back though !
Be the first to ReplyThe grilled fish.
..comes out looking steamed. Extremely fishy taste that was so disgusting that I still cringe when I think about it. If you want Laotian food, go to Thip Khao.

I recently learned that the longer I've been in DC, the less home sick I feel until I come across restaurants as Laos In Town.. where I loved it so much that I went back twice in three days. On the first day, I tried their northern noodle- almost like a laksa but less tumeric and coconut flavor... but just as freakn delicious. My only regret? I decided to try it on a hot ass day because I realized how much I was craving it the moment I saw it on the menu. My boyfriend got their chicken fried rice and he devoured it. DEVOURED IT. He loved it so much he kept saying he wished he ordered it to go for lunch. So as the great girlfriend that I am, I tricked him into going back two days later... I just didn't want to cook dinner. but no regrets here because everything was so good. Their grilled pork shoulder didn't have enough lemongrass (imo) but the flavor is there. I absolutely loved their laab moo and sticky rice. Again, got their chicken fried rice (had to set the plate in front of me so my boyfriend would share some). Their grilled chicken with lettuce wrap was really refreshing and great on a hot day. So happy that we have a Laos restaurant to go to... can't wait to go again!

We made a reservation for two for a Sunday evening at 6:45pm. The restaurant was already pretty much packed by then so I would definitely recommend having a reservation. We started off with the Painted Lady and This Side of Noma cocktails and the Goong Sawan for an appetizer. For entrees, we got the Chicken Curry and Northern Noodle to share. I've never had Laotian cuisine before, but the Chicken Curry was a nice, familiar taste and came with an ample amount of white rice. The Northern Noodle was a nice surprise. It was sweet and had a curry-like sauce, and the chicken was nice and tender. For dessert, we got the Mango Sticky Rice.I appreciated the fun, yet upscale ambiance and the thoughtful presentation of each dish. Our waiter was also super friendly and attentive. I would definitely recommend coming here for a date night or celebration.

..I truly could not recommend Laos in Town enough! My vegan friend and I (a vegetarian) came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon after seeing their exclusive vegan menu, and we were not disappointed in the slightest. We were seated immediately at one of the two-person tables next to the front door, and the first thing we noticed was the beautiful decor. Everything was a phenomenal fusion between traditional Laotian decorations and modern styles; it all came together into the most wonderful exciting, upbeat energy perfect for a weekend lunch or night of drinking. It was also so shocking and exciting to see an entirely vegan menu! My friend and I split the mieng kana tofu, three beautiful lettuce cup-esque appetizers made with a Chinese broccoli leaf, rice noodles, fried tofu, and an incredible, tangy sauce made from basil, mint, and lime. My friend tried out the khao yum tofu tod, one of her favorites from before she became vegan, and she was incredibly impressed by Laos in Town's ability to recreate the savory, delicious flavors in the traditional dish. I had the tofu orm, which includes fried tofu, Laotian eggplant, green beans, mushrooms, and basil in a light Laotian dill soup. The dish was light, fragrant, and packed with flavor, and it paired perfectly with sticky rice. All in all, this was an absolutely wonderful experience! The ambiance, service, and food were all incredible. My one complaint about the entire meal was that it was quite cold, but the main door (which we were seated next to) was left open. Even so, I can totally understand the rationale, since they also had a few tables seated outdoors. I definitely want to come back to this fun, delicious, and all-around delightful restaurant, and I can't wait to try out some of Laos in Town's other vegan dishes and their incredible menu of cocktails.
