Sakelicious
It never disappoints, we went to this bar with a guest that we had from another country, and as always service and hospitality were beyond awesome, the way to experience the martini my guest had was amazing, I had a sake flight which introduces you to the sake world, with three diferent tiles of junmai-ginjo style sakes, my favorite one was the Kaetzu Kambara, no wonder why this bar is on the list of 50 best bars and the best bar on the Midwest…
Be the first to ReplyFound on world’s best bars. Loved the Japanese influence on both food and cocktails
Found on world’s best bars list. Japanese inspired cocktails and food with larger Japanese spirit list. We loved the fried chicken and cocktails.
Be the first to ReplyManaging Effortless Fluidity is Kumiko's True Accomplishment
This eatery greats you with a warm embrace and invites you inside begging for a peek at where the source of this feeling is coming from. A warm, intimate dining room welcomes you. It is clear that careful planning went into every aspect of Kumiko. Everything from the lighting to the glassware. Although being small and quaint, the menu offers a wide variety of unique takes on traditional Japanese cuisine. We feel as though a well-deserved Michelin star should be bestowed upon the restaurant. Boasting its own personality and self identify, Kumiko stays true to Japanese flavors and unique drink-pairings. There is a story behind every cocktail and every dish. Every menu item reeks of creativity and every plating oozes class. Kumiko's pricing is very fair. Whether it be the $90 Wagyū Sando, or the $18 Pork Sando, there is a delicious option for everyone. We would strongly recommend a double date setting and ordering every menu item, similar to what we did by ourselves. Each bite is unique. Every dish deserves a try. They are all phenomenal and intriguing in their own way. Each dish has clearly been fully mastered. It is obvious that this mastery is bestowed upon both their food and their drinks. Our time at Kumiko was a very fluid experience. The eatery itself had a unique flow, the team works effortlessly throughout the space, coexisting together as one to take care of their patrons. Eli was fantastically knowledgeable and very kind. The coursing of the dishes was spaced out almost perfectly. We wish the dessert did not take as long as it did, and surprisingly enough, it was the only dish that was not perfect in our opinion. Our want would be for the brûlée to be lighter, although some people may appreciate a heavier brûlée. The bread was lovely, but it was not the traditional milk toast that we are used to. All in all, each item at Kumiko leaves you wanting more and asking yourself how each dish could be so drastically different and work together so well. Intimate, charming, and creatively authentic. Managing effortless fluidity is Kumiko's true accomplishment.

My husband and I have visited Kumiko several times and have had a wonderful time each visit. We were so lucky to visit Kumiko before they became one of the hottest seats in the city. For our first visit, my husband and I had the restaurant to ourselves - wow!
Each visit has been a real treat and while our planned visit for this month could not occur, I am hoping to visit again soon, we really appreciate your entire team!
My husband and I went to Kumiko
My husband and I went to Kumiko last night, Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. For the restaurant's review, when you walk in, we sat on the right hand side, against the wall, second table away from the bar.
This was, hands down, the worst service experience I think I have ever had in Chicago (where I am from). We 100% went to this place knowing that it's the cocktail part of Kikko. However, when we spoke to someone on the phone earlier in the day, she explained that Kumiko has a separate food menu whereby you can also do your own omakase. When we sat down, the server came over to us and immediately began speaking to us in a condescending manner that was, off-the-bat, off putting. The way he explained what we were able to eat there was extremely aggressive to the point where I felt I had to interrupt him to explain that we have been all over the world to omakase restaurants, including Jiro, to give him the idea that we didn't appreciate the arrogant tone. He proceeded to make inappropriate comments to us like, "You can have drinks, but not too many, because my goal is to not lose our liquor license."
When he walked away, I still felt as though he did not explain what Kumiko's omakase menu entailed. Therefore, my husband and I decided to just order whatever individual items we wanted from the menu. The server came back over to our table, and at the same time, the man to my husband's left waved the server over to his table as well. Considering the server approached our table first, the man to my husband's left waited patiently (very nice) to be taken care of next. My husband asked the server if he was ready to which he responded yes, so he, therefore, started listing off numerous items for our order. About 4 items in, the server literally put his open palm hand up to my husband's face and said, "Hold on." He walked around my husband's back to the man to my husband's left and goes, "What can I get for you? Would you like to order a drink?" He actually stopped my husband in the middle of his order to take someone else's order that he deemed to be more important. We were disgusted and shocked that that just happened. When this server returned, I told him nevermind, and we just wanted our two drinks we ordered. My husband and I immediately decided that we wanted to get the hell out of there, drink our drinks, and go get food at a more reputable spot in West Loop (to which we did). When the server asked us, again, if we still wanted to place a food order, I told him no and that we were going to eat somewhere else. He asked us where, and then proceeded to tell us how to get there.
I actually have no idea how someone like this could be working at a place that is supposed to be associated with a Michelin rating. My husband and I are not frugal when it comes to eating out and eating good food. We were well aware that ordering off that menu was going to be a few hundred dollars, and we were fine with it until we were completed disrespected like nothing we have ever seen before. I actually felt like this was a Julia Roberts moment because we walked out and spent our money at another well known sushi spot in West Loop. My point of this review is not to get anything comped as we will never step foot in this place ever again. I just hope that this review brings attention to whatever management team Kumiko has so that they can take appropriate actions to make sure this never happens to anyone again. I have told this story about the server's hand in my husband's face numerous times since last night, and everyone's mouths drop when they hear about it.

Great Experience
We visited here with friends in December 2019--it's a hot reservation in Chicago, and were really looking forward to the visit.
The establishment did not disappoint! We were warmly greeted in the small lobby and offered some tea with a very distinct flavor that helped to cleanse the palate.
The interior is very chic; it feels thoroughly modern while still making references to a Japanese teahouse. Very relaxing! The lighting was perfect: dim enough to create atmosphere, but not so dim that you could not read the menus. Seating was very comfortable and the vibe was chill, with music at just the right volume.
The emphasis is on cocktails; the menu had a wide variety of appealing options, ranging from twists on classics to new creations. They were logically organized and well-described. There was also a very nice selection of non-alcoholic options created with the same care as the options with alcohol--a really nice touch for groups that may want the Kumiko experience but have a party member who does not drink.
Service was superb and fit the price point; our servers were personable, attentive, and very happy to help with recommendations. The menu had a lot of ingredients unfamiliar to us and the server took care to describe them without any sniff of snobbery.
We each had two cocktails throughout the evening. They were all distinctly flavored and beautifully presented! We also split one of the non-alcoholic options; it was delicious, too. Favorites were the 'bitter trade,' which had the promised bitterness but also balance from some fruit, and the boulevardier, which was just perfect.
While the focus was on the cocktails, the food also impressed! We ordered a few bites, and each totally impressed. I'd describe the food as luxurious--each bite was a little delight of explosive flavor, really showcasing the primary ingredient.
Excited to return--highly recommended!
Absolutely Amazing
First, congrats on the Michelin Star. After eating there with my family, it is obvious why you earned such distinction. Bernard R may be the best server in Chicago. The atmosphere is superb. The food indescribable. Each bite was better than the one before. I'll be back.
Amazing culinary experience in Kikko (basement)
In the basement of Kumiko is a small section of the restaurant called Kikko. It’s essentially a private counter with all diners eating a gourmet prix fixe chef’s tasting menu.
I’ve eaten some amazing dinners in Chicago and this one rated among the best. However, to really appreciate it, you do need to like sushi. Not all the dishes are sushi, but some of the best are. I’m not sure if they can substitute if you don’t like sushi, but you may want to ask because this restaurant is not to be missed.
In addition to amazing food, the staff is interactive, engaging, and ever attentive.
Recently listed by Bob Appetit magazine as one of the best new restaurants in the US, I suspect getting a seat here will soon become difficult.
Spa like experience cocktail bar
This is how you set the bar for the best cocktail place in Chicago. Upon entering you’re offered a complimentary “welcome” drink as well as a towel to clean your hands. The menu is extensive with enough options to please any pallet & I highly recommend you conversing with & taking suggestions from the staff. The owner Julia is by far my favorite bartender now & her husband Sam is a true conversationalist. The “Sugi Sazerac flight” was by far the best Sazerac I’ve had outside of New Orleans & was served in a deconstructed way. The nigiri was a heavenly bite to say the least as were the uni & Japanese milk bread. A highly professional & knowledgeable staff will ensure your experience is one of the best. This is now a must in the city & quite honestly my new favorite bar.
Be the first to ReplyStellar New Cocktail Joint
Kumiko is a welcome addition to the Fulton Market/West Loop area of Chicago. The cocktails are exquisite as are the do-it-yourself style omakase bites. They even have an awesome selection of alcohol free "mock-tails" that are perhaps even more inventive than the actual cocktails! The staff was knowledgeable, pleasant and genuinely added to the overall experience. My wife and I went on a Saturday night and had a wonderful evening exploring their menu. If your looking for a new dining/drinking adventure then this is the place!
