A delightful experience.
We wanted to book a future date that wasn't on their Tock yet, and Yuko was very accommodating through emails to help us reserve the time we wanted early. Parking was not too hard to find since the reservation was at 5 pm - we parked on the street outside a nearby parking garage (lots of space when we arrived, fully packed when we left) Inside we were greeted by the host who took our jackets and showed us to our seats. I believe inside it seats 9 max so very intimate. During our meal the host kept our tea/water filled up to the top, never had to ask. The food itself was special, a bit different than other omakase experiences we've had that were purely fish-focused. We tried new things such as octopus egg, snow crab tempura, and monkfish liver. I think reading others reviews will vary compared to your own experience, since what we ate was different than someone else's review from just 2-3 days ago. Every part of the 20 courses was enjoyable (although personally I felt the chef was a bit heavy handed on the wasabi), and different from the last. My favorites were definitely the monkfish liver, the otoro, the baby bluefin, and the uni handroll. Seems like others in our sitting enjoyed the monkfish liver the most as well, ordering extras of it. (they have a neat bathroom too) Thank you Katsu for a good time, and I hope others will get to experience it as well.
Be the first to ReplyHad an early Valentines Day dinner here.
Every one of the dishes was immaculately seasoned and of the highest quality. Really subtle, delicate flavors - nothing in your face or overpowering. Multiple dishes with uni (sea urchin), so fresh, smooth, awesome. All the fish exceptionally fresh - the little pieces the chef trimmed off as waste would have made a great meal. Service was perfect as well. They only seat 8 people, so their staff can take care of everyone really well. Everyone was friendly and polite. The place is simply decorated in an elegant way, great attention to detail. It's true it's not inexpensive, but if you can afford it, it's an indulgence that just makes you feel like food is more than just good tasting sustenance. The variety of dishes and the standard to which each is held really makes for a special evening. We won't do it often, but we'll love doing it again for a special occasion.

I recently celebrated my boyfriend's birthday with a group dinner at Katsu. I was interested in booking a private dinner and was given the option to either secure the whole evening or just book all 8 spots for one of the two seatings. There is a minimum spend if you're interested in the private party and depending on your price point, it may be worth it. It was very easy to coordinate with Yuko (the manager). I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly she would respond back to my queries. I did read other reviews in which they missed emails from the staff prior to the reservation. Fearing that would happen to me, I preemptively reached out to confirm my reservation the day prior and was also able to place an order for their special uni dish. Chef Katsu was pleasant and served us dishes we've never had (ex: octopus egg). We had about 20 courses and he was able to adjust the amount of rice in the nirigi if you're getting too stuffed. All the chefs are personable and attentive to detail.

Chef Katsu and his staff were absolutely amazing - everything from decor, service, presentation, attention to detail, and the quality of the food and sake superb! Every single bite was delicious, he took us on an amazing journey and experience w his flavor profiles of food/drink choices. Everything was super fresh and clean tasting, and wasn't too full and didn't leave hungry, perfect amount! The intimate seating arrangement, the tasteful yet simple decor and the extremely clean bathroom topped off the wonderful omakase experience!

**Originally posted on IG for our visit in June 2023** This 22-course Edomae-style omakase is going to be living rent free in my mind for a while. Katsu offers its omakase experience by Chef Maruyama in an intimate 8-seat setting. I felt calmed just being in the space and ultimately, well taken care of. Each course was clearly selected with intention and sourced from various areas of Japan. I loved the variety in dishes, and it really didn't feel like I left overly stuffed, which speaks to how well portioned each course was (and Chef Maruyama offered to make sure and accommodate if we started to feel full). My standout favorites were the smoked trout from Lake Biwa, black perch (kuromutsu), and our generous add-on of the Ensui uni special. They were also so sweet to treat us to an ice cream dessert in celebration of us being newlyweds We can't wait to come back for more special occasions.

It has been a long time since I've been wowed at a restaurant... but Katsu was AMAZING! Each bite was tasty, fresh, creative. Service was attentive -- not obtrusive. Sake tasted crisp. I loved it so much and hope to eat there again soon!
Be the first to ReplyI must say, the service here is definitely unrivaled by all.
My green tea was continuously topped off and the associates there just kept an eye on pretty much the entire experience. The chef introduced each item to us and how it came about to be made, and every piece was as delicious as the next. I am a sucker for toro and uni and those pieces of nigiri were arguably the best I've had, however, everything tasted extremely fresh and by the end of the meal I was actually stuffed! There were also a few items that seemed relatively new and innovative to me that really expanded my flavor palate. Hats off to the chef for creating such an amazing menu. The dessert was a house made black sesame ice cream that was light and smooth. All in all, super solid spot.

The highlight was definitely the yura uni tray (special add on order) from Awaji island. It was so sweet and delicate. The most unique tasting unit I've ever had. Katsu definitely did not disappoint. Everything we had was fresh and delicious. The menu also changes often.

As great as premium dining in Tokyo. The Seko Crab was amazing! I enjoyed the sake pairing as well. Atmosphere and staff is perfect.

We have been long time diners at Sushi Marayama and when we learned they were opening Katsu, we knew we had to give it a try. Katsu offers an edomae style omakase service. Each dish is beautifully prepared by chef in front of you and is described with passion before presentation. During your service, which is traditional and authentic in style, you will be treated to the most amazing dry aged tuna and scallops I have ever tasted. Throughout the service, you will pick up hints of yuzu, citrus, and some flavors new and exciting. The restaurant books thru Tock and any questions you might have are quickly and professionally answered by Yuko, who is just lovely when you met her in person. Prepare yourself for a treat...while this is a splurge meal, you will leave feeling overly satisfied and pampered just a bit. Can't wait to visit again.
Be the first to ReplyTop class Edomae sushi in Mountain View.
This is the sister restaurant to Sushi Maruyama in San Mateo, another excellent traditional sushi restaurant. The space is in the former ramen Ryowa spot, but has been nicely renovated as a tranquil, eight seat counter that is private and removed from the busy area. Everything was delicious and included unusual seafood such as octopus eggs, icefish and baby eels. Katsu and his staff are friendly and the evening was very enjoyable due to the combination of outstanding sushi, great ambiance and fun atmosphere. They make it a point to remember your prior visits so on future visits, they can give you something different. I found this unusually unique and distinctive to this place.
Be the first to ReplyWe came on a rainy day, it was pouring outside.
Our reservations were at 8 p.m. and we were early, so we waiting outside until they unlocked the door. We were seated right away by the hostess, she was very helpful. The overall ambiance was great. I love looking at the beautiful ceramics and plates. Just gorgeous! The fish was fresh and curated so perfectly. Having the ending tea was much needed given we were about to venture out into the rain. Overall wonderful experience and we're so glad to see it in downtown Mountain View.

I had a good time at Katsu, located at downtown Mountain View, is the latest rapidly growing omakase offerings. Chef Katsu Maruyama surprised us with delicious authentic courses. My favorite is the Uni cup and baby eels! Nigiris are also tasty ! I also love the interior designs. Plus the service is good. If you are a omakase lover, this is the perfect restaurant for you !

Incredible Omakase experience with friendly, phenomenally skilled chef. Each bite was crafted perfectly. Highlights include the salmon, monkfish liver, and toro cheek aged for three weeks! More importantly our chef took time to explain every ingredient and answered my more than naive questions. Rivals three star Omakase experiences in Hong Kong, NYC and SF.

We had a wonderful time at Katsu! Make a reservation on Tock as they only have seating for 8 people for Japanese Edomae-style Omakase. You will have a front row seat as the chef works his magic and explains each item being served. Our meal was approximately 1.5-2 hours that delighted our taste buds with a variety of raw and cooked menu items.

Fine dining at its finest best in a place that appears to be a hole in the wall (without intending to go dine there you probably would walk past it quite easily) . Katsu raises the bar on Omakase eodame style sushi experience serving seasonal catch and in an exquisite manner. You have to use tock to reserve a spot(s). Upto 8 people dine in at a given time in a setup that is pretty intimate with the seats lined up alongside a bar with the chef on the other side serving and talking about the dish being served.Finding parking can be a bit of a challenge though we got lucky and found one in the public parking spot at the back of the restaurant. Once we got in we were greeted by a server/hostess who verified our reservation details and then we got a spot right in the center. The chef welcomed us all in a very traditional way which essentially marked the beginning of approximately 1.5-2 hours of quality time spent eating some amazing work of chef Katsu.I would let the pictures do the talking of what was served though this spot is definitely a game changer in the area as far goes the Omakase experience. Do give it a try!!!

Great tasting Omakase! The small bites were inventive and delicious. The nigiri were all on point. Server and sushi chefs were amicable and welcoming. Would go back in a heart beat.

5 hours at this austere, 8 seat restaurant. Some of the specialties included aged tuna, aged toro, amaebi with roe, hairy crab with tomalley, and mega fresh scallop, uni, ikura, and a sliced mackerel crudo that had 0% fishiness! There is sake and wine (extra $) but stick with the hot tea and water to really appreciate each piece of perfectly seasoned seafood goodness. I was very impressed with all the dishes and it's traditional omakase style dinner. I just added myself on a cancellation list for next month :)Get your reservations on Tock and be prepared to wait bc this place books out!

Truly a wonderful experience! You need to make a reservation as the restaurant only seats 8 people. It is an intimate setting and every seat is at the bar so you have the opportunity to watch Chef Katsu as he makes each course. Katsu serves authentic edomae style sushi and each course has seasonal ingredients that are hard to source. Chef Katsu has over 20 years of experience and it's no wonder he creates the perfect pairings and courses. It is $230/person, but you will not leave the restaurant hungry. If you are wanting to try, I'd check out Tock often as they book up fast.
