Go for the duck, itโs tremendous!
We have had dinner here twice and both times we ordered the whole duck to be shared by 2. Itโs outstanding. So tender and flavorful. We started off with oysters which were good but werenโt expecting them to have them to have onion and cucumber on top. We like them clean this missed the mark for us. Service was stellar! Serena was totally on her game, very friendly and definitely added to the enjoyment of the evening! Would certainly request her again when we return next. Ambiance is upscale casual. Will be back!

Three of us obtained a hard to get reservation for dinner. All of us are foodies and good cooks, were looking forward to an exceptional dining adventure. Service was good, music overhead not good, and food was average at best (esp given high prices). We started with an $80 bottle of Viognier, which we enjoyed. All of our food selections were from Pantry/Small plates area of menu except last item, as noted. First, we shared Fromage Blanc, a small piece of focaccia with a pot of warm cheese and tomato in herbed olive oil. Nice blend of herb and oil, we enjoyed this one a lot (small piece of bread wasnโt large enough for the 3 of us to share, nor did it match the size of melting pot dip- we asked for more bread) Next, the Cast Iron Romanesco, recommended by waiter. Weโre all fans of Romanesco but this one disappoints. Ingdts were finely diced and mashed tog, resulting in a mushy mish mash. $19 for this bland potโฆ. We thought the Beef tartare, โCarne Cruda Toastโ would be a hit, but another disappointment. The beef was diced into small bits and mixed with herbs and egg yolk jam. You could not taste any beef, we could barely see the tiny flecks of diced meat. Would never recognize this as beef tartare, by appearance nor taste! An $18 disappointment. Next, a โbiteโ plate, Yellowfin Tostada, with pine nuts and avocado. Two Marinated tuna pieces, Small, with fine dice of nuts, avocado and herbs. $13. This was ordinary, ok, somewhat meh. Last item, Miso Black Cod, with Trumpet Mushrooms, from the โPlatesโ section of menu. A 6oz (before cooking) cod chunk, that was served in a bowl, with lots of broth, chopped mushroom, bits of Swiss chard and herbs. We did not expect fish in a bowl of broth, as this was not part of description on menu. But the cod was tender and well prepared, the broth was good- would be nice to include broth in menu listing. Two of us shared this cod, and we appreciated its tenderness and the flavorful broth. At $38, could they have included a toast or bread stick to help with that yummy broth? We all shared an over all disappointment of this Restaurant. Were our expectations too high? We Three are happy to spend $200 (plus tax and tip) on a bottle of wine and a few Small Plates, but the food has to impress. It just didnโt happen here. Prices are high, portions are small, and the food simply did not deliver. The service was good, the funky/hop music wasnโt appreciated; we had a nice evening together, in spite of the underwhelming fare. We have all dined on far better food at similar prices in San Diego. We were celebrating a birthday and were gifted a decorated scoop of ice cream, a nice birthday touch. thank you!
Be the first to Replyamazing pampering for your taste buds
The restaurant itself is open spaced with kitchen activity on sight which I liked. The lighting is dimmed with spots on ceiling barely directed to the table. It feels private regardless of the open space. Now for the food: -do yourself a favor and order the sourdough bread, or two. - the menu is designed from smaller bites to bigger plates and definitely the first two sections of the menu are the top and best from them all. -the mixture of flavors bursting when you take a bite is quite indescribable in a very good way, we orderred the tuna crudo and avocado & citrus and it was the most refreshing taste with hints of mint and delicious sweet and savory hints. -we ordered the agnolotti with butternut squash alfredo sauce and I must say I was kind of let down because it had a huge potential to be an incredible flavor but somehow the sauce was spicy and completely killed your taste buds to enjoy the gouda and kale pesto as well as the home made pasta. -chicken roulade was just ok, in comparison with the small plates the larger ones felt lacking. -wine was amazing, we ordered from the sommelier selection. -service was really good, impeccable. Overall I would most definitely come back and order from the pantry, bites and small bites section.
Be the first to ReplyUnimaginable and complex flavor combinations
Juniper and Ivy, a kitchen full of complex flavors. This California based restaurant offers California based dishes with local ingredients. It has great waiters and overall good vibe. Smart casual. These two dishes are a MUST and what Juniper & Ivy are known for. The famous duck that takes 40min to make but is so so so worth it I canโt even explain, the tenderness and the fat the duck has is top quality, it is served with a mint chimichurri and a carrot hummus with garlic naan that blend in perfectly. Itโs a large dish, minimum 2 person plate. The Uni Linguine in my opinion is the star in this restaurant. Prepare for a mouthful of complex flavors, this plate has Uni, chorizo and several other odd ingredients that your wouldnโt expect. As soon as I read this dish on the Menu I was curious and it lead to one of the best dishes Iโve had in downtown San Diego till this day.
Be the first to ReplyUsed to be a favorite but disappointed our last visit
It's been over 4 years, but we've dined at Juniper & Ivy a few times in the past. We had amazing experiences in the past and were excited to visit again after not having been back for a few years. Unfortunately, we did not have a great experience. The front desk staff was not friendly - they seemed stressed and unhappy and were short and rude with us when we checked in. We were seated on the outdoor patio which was rather noisy between other patrons, the restaurant next door, and freeway/airport noise. We had 2 small plates and 2 entrees to share between us and they were all underwhelming. Not worth the high price. Service was slightly above average but nothing noteworthy. Sad to say we won't be coming back the next time we are in town.
Be the first to ReplyVictim of COVID Restart
This is my first visit to this highly rated restaurant in Little Italy. For the price charge, it was definitely a bit underwhelming. I attributed this to the COVID restart syndrome - the fact that many restaurants lost their trained staff during the shutdown and needed to retrain a new team. So I will revisit this location in 2023 to see if things have improved.
Be the first to ReplyTasty and love the flavor.
Wow! The food and servers are top notch. The resto is spacious and clean. The Mediterranean flavours sang in my mouth. We ordered fish, lamb, and 2 sides. Generous portions and well presented. A scrumptious slice of complimentary birthday cake was served (chocolate layered mousse/ cake). We were stuffed, but ate the entire slice including chocolate truffles. I highly recommend if you are looking for tasty fine dining. Causal and cool vibe. Dress up or dress down. I will definitely return when Iโm in town.
Be the first to ReplySooo, Soo sooo Good! Excellent Service!
Every bite of every plate I tried was delicious, I kept trying all of the appetizers and entrees (to see which one would be the miss) but I never found it. The service was excellent, the server was extremely hospitable and went the extra mile to give us recommendations as new visitors to San Diego. Even the bread, was excellent-- each bite was an experience and I was literally being laughed at by our group of friends because I could not stop saying..this is sooo good to each new bite. Excellent. My only caveat was that the portions were just slightly too small. Other than that--excellent food, excellent service!!

Originally we planned on coming here with friends, but their kids got sick so it was just my husband and I. Unfortunately he did not feel well so the evening was short lived, but it did not spoil the amazing meal I had! First up, this place is great. Modern, with wood and metal work interior, an almost pretentious vibe, but they did not go there, and that made me very happy. I got a drink at the bar while waiting on our table, it was this amazing gin drink with Lilac....I suck at names and i do not see it on the online menu, but it was one of the best drinks i have ever had... it was just lovely. We sat outside and our waiter was very sweet, infact everyone at this restaurant was nice and helpful. I decided to order a bunch of litte dishes and skip the entree. I had read several reviews about the chef and wow the food did not disappoint! I would absolutely have all of these again. Sourdough bread, chicken liver mousse, carne cruda toast, fig and goat cheese, cheese puffs and a wonderful glass of Domaine Berthaut. Like i said everyone was delightful and this will be a repeat visit when we visit San Diego. Can't recommend it enough!
Be the first to ReplySnapper was a highlight
I'd originally booked an outside table but on arrival thought that the main room looked fantastic and asked if we could move inside. Team were very helpful and accommodated this straight away. Service was excellent, almost a tad too swift. Great menu and our favourite was the snapper. Cool cocktails too. Really enjoyed Juniper & Ivy
Be the first to ReplyCAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK
We met a couple on our way to San Diego who told us to go to Juniper and Ivy for dinner. Boy were they right. We had a reservation and walked there from our hotel. Our waiter was Ben - who was fantastic. A great personality, knew the menu very well and was just a fun guy. He never rushed us and checked back with us frequently. He provided some of the best service we've had in a restaurant in a long time. The food was delicious. The items on the menu were a little different from the ordinary you would find. The Baby Beets were so incredible we couldn't stop eating them. And the Yodel for dessert - was not what you would expect at all and totally worth every caloric bite. This is a must go to kind of place. The prices were reasonable, the atmosphere was awesome and Ben, well, he was wonderful.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Food and Service
My husband and I came here during a recent trip to San Diego and were still talking about the food we ate. We sat outside to enjoy the San Diego weather, and they still have an expanded sitting area. Outside was not crowded but when I made a quick trip to the bathroom, the inside was packed! We started off with drinks, and because of Comic Con they had some special comic-related ones to try. I got the 4 Page Letter (delish!) and my husband had the Batman. We decided to share multiple plates so we could try a little of everything: - Deviled Eggs - my husband has been here before and couldn't stop talking about these... it is VERY different but worth a try. The trout roe was a little much for me - Sourdough bread - can't go wrong with fresh bread - Local Fish Crudo - this was amazing. I could have eaten this just as a meal on my own - Pork Belly - a week later, my husband is still talking about this. It melted in your mouth and was so delicious - Hanger steak - I was underwhelmed by the hanger steak, but I am also not as big of a steak eater. My husband enjoyed it. - Yodel - SO interesting and delicious Overall, we would definitely come back to eat here the next time we visit SD. The service was amazing our entire time and the food was excellent.

1 star for being sat right away. I had reservations for this restaurant was promptly seated at my table but that's about it. I sat here for exactly 25 minutes and not one server came over to take my drink order explain the menu nothing. There was a couple seated next to us about 15 minutes after we got there who knew someone at the restaurant. Their friend some name with a J came over to say hi and a server came over promptly to explain the menu in detail to them. As I sat there waiting I started really digging into the reviews of this restaurant and they are beyond inconsistent. I have never sat at a restaurant for 25 minutes ever and not been attended to not in NY in Paris anywhere. The restaurant was not even that busy. Their vallet outside is a disaster. 10/10 would not recommend.

We are on our family vacation for Spring Break in San Diego and we were not disappointed by the top notch service and food at Juniper & Ivy. A must try for folks who enjoy a modern interpretation of food and drinks!
Be the first to ReplyAwesome service, unusual food
My husband and I, along with four friends had reservations for Sunday evening. The six of us were seated at a large round table; the restaurant was noisy to the extent we couldnโt interact with each other across the table. First let me say the service was outstanding. Husband and I pretty much enjoyed our meal but a couple of my friends did not. They didnโt care for what they had ordered and they left quite a bit uneaten. While I understand that the chef was being creative in his composition of the menu, it was somewhat difficult to discern from the description of some of the dishes exactly what it was or what it might taste like. It was an experience but I canโt say it would be at the top of my list for a return visit.
Be the first to ReplyConsistently good
The menu is nicely done and has a wide spectrum of choices. Drinks are well prepared, knowledgeable bartenders. Most dishes are very good, although the lamb meatballs were dry. Randy was an excellent and attentive server. All the wait staff are friendly and helpful.

Fantastic experience here. Since I was solo I sat at the bar near the kitchen and enjoyed watching all the prep work. Service was excellent - friendly, helpful but not intrusive which can sometimes happen when dining alone. The food was wonderful. Definitely get the sourdough bread and salted butter which serves 3 but I couldnโt resist. I started with the burrata and squash salad which was amazing. My only issue, and itโs a small one, was that itโs served in a bowl so difficult to eat with a knife and fork. I got the radiatore pasta - small plate but plenty of food for leftovers. The place is loud and lively and beautiful.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the finest restaurant meals I have had
This is another Little Italy restaurant in an industrial space. Somehow it feels warmer and more intimate than others next door. They had valet parking which is a plus in that neighborhood. The staff was friendly from the very first moment we arrived. We were seated at the bar for drinks while we waited for our table. Then we were escorted to the table which was seamless. This time we ate out in the side patio which is rather plain, but preferred during the current health concerns. Also, the planes from the airport roar overhead making you pause conversation for a time. The menu is not enormous but so interesting. What I liked about this place was that there was not a single item or preparation on the menu that you have ever had before. The combination of ingredients is imaginative, and you are certain there is no way it will work, but ultimately you are proven wrong. The service was so professional and attentive. We were treated like we ate there all the time. The prices are not for the faint of heart. Two entrees (to serve two persons) were over 100 dollars. The waiter could describe each item well, which was necessary since they were all so unique. In the end this turned out to be our best meal in San Diego and rivaled that in other food towns as well. I will save up and go here again.
Be the first to ReplyTeam Night Out
We ordered a private room upstairs with was quite nice but not at all necessary. Our Servers were absolutely excellent as were the delicious appetizers. The family style service was also quite special. However, the prime rib and bone looked amazing, but needed to be cooked better as it was quite rare and I am someone who likes "rare" This batch probably maxed out at the 120 degree mark if that. The salmon also was felt by all to be farmed and not wild and basically underperformed. It was a great night out, but the $2000 minimum for the room which came out to $200/pp was some $400 over what it actually cost, and the value together with the quality of the main courses did not meet the expectations of the majority of us or the ambience of the venue. Top tier service, excellent presentation, but short of the mark on preparation and ingredients which should be expected to be top tier at the price paid.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best restaurant meals ever!
Lucky me, I got to have a birthday here. The staff greeted me with a happy birthday, the servers did the same, employees walking by our table wished me happy birthday... geesh, you'd think I was special. They sure made me feel that way. This place has a great vibe in the Little Italy area of downtown San Diego. The service was remarkable. The presentation was stunning and the food was some of the best I've ever eaten. Will we go back... ABSOLUTELY!
Be the first to ReplyHip, fun, and worth it
Listen, this place is just so good. The staff is knowledgeable and efficient. Recently had the Blue Fin tuna and it was ridiculous - just excellent.
Fantastic, hip environment with indoor and outdoor dining options. Fun cocktail options too.
Recommend this highly.
One of the every best.
Make a reservation. Go. Enjoy fantastic food cooked to perfection. Every plate is an eye treat. And quite tasty. The chefs and waitstaff love what they do and itโs clear from the energy of the diners they are enjoying what they are eating. We make Juniper + Ivy a yearly visit when traveling through San Diego.

845pm reservation on a Sat night and they sat us on time. We went to bar next door as we wanted. Food was excellent. We ordered so much food and ate everything. Highly recommend. Waygu was great but just a touch salty.
Be the first to ReplyBeware: Not What it Used to Be
My husband and I had regarded Juniper and Ivy as one of the few consistently good upscale restaurants in San Diego since it opened in 2014. Under the leadership of Richard Blais the food, atmosphere, and service was impeccable. Similarly, when Anthony Wells took over, the experience remained innovative even when we visited two times during Covid everything was perfection. In contrast, when we returned two nights ago, under new leadership so much had changed that our once favorite restaurant was nearly unrecognizable from start to finish. The outside seating area smelled of urine; we were reseated inside. Once inside, our server informed us that the corkage fee went from $25 to $40 even when purchasing another pricy bottle of wine from the menu. Most disappointing was the food which went from being prepared with passion and beautifully plated to being uninspired, bland, and at times inedible. Additionally, the menu was significantly paired down (not to mention very overpriced); in fact one of the only dishes that we enjoyed was a carryover from the former chef/menu. As regulars who tend to spend a lot of time (3+ hours) sampling and sharing a variety of dishes from this formerly innovative menu, we left after a little over an hour and wished we had eaten at Crack Shack. So sad...
