Perfect old school ambiance, great martini, service was excellent. I don't eat red meat so I didn't eat the burger but I heard it was great.

The wait is worth it! Everytime we're in NYC we make sure to stop by! The service is okay but overall a great experience.

Been coming here for years even after I moved away from UES and it is by far the best burger in Manhattan. No frills, just plain simple perfection. Better than Minnetta Tavern, Corner Bistro, etc. Yes, the place can get a little cramped and yes the servers are a bit gruff... but they have a soft side if you're not a complete douche to them. They work hard. I wish they didnt close the West side location.
Be the first to ReplyAfter a lot of noise finally got a chance to try this place.
Well oiled machine to say the least. Tight seating and pressure to be in and out was obvious but not a surprise. Overall the burgers were very good. Not the best Ive had but definitely in the top 30%. Worth the NYC experience
Be the first to ReplyBest burgers in Manhattan! I'm a vegetarian.
.. Except when I go to Melons! The bacon cheddar cheeseburger with sautéed onions is the bomb. Don't forget the cottage fries, they are amazing.

I don't usually write reviews, but the experience was so disappointing that I felt compelled to share. The waiter at the bar was incredibly rude, lacking basic respect. Additionally, the burger arrived with burned bacon, and the taste was simply awful. I have no intention of returning.
Be the first to ReplyI mean? It's an institution.
Even though my family is made up of three vegetarians, it's our favorite local spot. Chef Salad with no bacon, cottage fries, and mozzarella in carozza. Plus a couple of martinis, of course. Perfect night on the UES.

Having lived in NYC for decades I am well acquainted with JG Melon's reputation for "the best burger ever." I have been there probably close to 100 times over the years and I must say that if that reputation was ever truly earned, it is now sadly in the rear view mirror. The burgers are still okay but really nothing special. Better than fast food, yes. But one can easily find a better burger at dozens of places in the city. What is most striking in recent years is the mediocre service, the run-down atmosphere, and their unrelenting desire to get customers out of the place as soon as your last bite of food has been swallowed. My wife and I were there last week and as soon as the hostess gave us the required "YOU KNOW WE'RE CASH ONLY!" speech (yes we've been here many times, and nice to see you too) we were rushed through our meal as if we were in a restaurant version of a car wash. There's nothing like the feeling that a business couldn't care less about your dining experience as long as you spend money (CASH ONLY!) and get the hell out so the next group of suckers can take your table. Don't get me wrong, JG Melon was once very good. They're just not anymore.

The burger, service and old school ambiance are well worth a trip to this upper east side institution.

Mozzarella en carrozza! Yes please! The rest of the food was also pretty good. Friendly service, cute old school neighborhood place

By far, the best burger in NYC and the most amazing bar staff. I have been a regular customer for 40 years and it doesn't get any better than Melon's!!!!
Be the first to ReplyYes, the place is falling apart.
Yes, you'll be jammed up against an old wooden table with zero elbow room. Yes, the service (while friendly) leaves something to he desired. Yes, it's cash only (no credit/debit). But yes, JG Melon is worth the wait. Hands down the best burger in the city, and it never fails to disappoint. If you're looking for white tablecloths and 5-star service, this place certainly isn't for you, but if you're simply looking for the best patty between two buns and hot, crispy fries, JG is your spot.
Be the first to ReplyCame at lunch time on a Wednesday and was pretty busy .
We got one of the last tables in the backBurger was good ( feel price a little high for just a burger) We shared an order of cottage fries which were very good $8.00 ( again a little steep for the amount given) Cash only
Be the first to ReplyThe food is okay.
Burgers were over cooked & under seasoned. Fries are okay as well: very irregular in shape & thickness, but tasted fine. Chocolate cake, again, okay. A step above diner food overall. Ambience has a nice old school feel. I found staff to be friendly & too the point, which I like.
Be the first to ReplyClassic spot.
Open late which drew me in but have been wanting to see what all the hype is about.Food is ok. I echo many others that say it's quite overpriced for what you get. Add salt to your burger, was pretty under seasoned for me. The cottage fries are fun and is a nice accompaniment. Don't expect service to be that kind - no smiles and straight to the point.Space is tight! But I feel that's what adds to its charm.Overall, it's worth a visit if you're into spots that have stood the test of time or want to sit down for some late night eats... But to go back for the food as a regular? That would be suspect. 2 cheeseburgers, 2 fries, and 2 tap beers ran us almost $80. Cash only! Wells Fargo ATM across the street.

Came in with a group of 4 on a Tuesday at 7:30 after other plans fell through. We all used to go to the Village location pre-2020. The 30 minute wait was expected, and the bartender was nice during the wait, but once we were seated in the back we became invisible. I get that they only had one waiter in the area, but he didn't take our order for 15 minutes despite helping other tables around us. After we'd placed it, we waited another hour until our burgers came, and in that time he seated two 6-tops on either side of us, took their orders, and brought them their food. One even asked for *another* burger after getting their food, which *also* came before ours. We had to ask where our order was, at which point he told us we were next and brought it out shortly, but not before saying "here are the burgers you waited soooo long for" which just came off rude. Our waters also took forever, and the check did too. The only thing fast was the beer.I understand food delays at a place where some dishes take longer than others, but not when everyone is ordering the same burger and fries. I hope our experience was an exception to the rule. Sharing this in case others are going through it here too.

Was told this is one of the OG spots to get a burger, so I came with a friend and a good amount of cash (cash only establishment). My friend got there first and put us on the waitlist (no reservations), which was about a 45 minute wait for a 7PM Thursday night. The place itself was smaller than I expected, with a bar and a very small kitchen. The tables were pretty crammed against one another, but able to barely get by and sit comfortably. We both got a Bacon Cheeseburger ($15) and Cottage Fried Potatoes ($8). The Bacon Cheeseburger is pretty standard, nothing too special. If you wanted pickles or tomatoes added, it was a few dollars extra cost per item. The real winner was the Cottage Fried Potatoes. They looked like thick wedge potato fries, but they are very thinly sliced, which gives it that awesome crisp, and they of course fried it to perfection. So if you wanna stop by just to say you got a burger here, be my guest. There surely are other places to get the same quality burger without waiting forever at a cheaper price.

It was a classic JG meal: started with a bloody bull and quickly moved on to a chili bowl with hand cut diced cheddar and red onions, followed by the main event, a bacon cheeseburger. Topped it all off with an apple sour cream walnut pie. Service was also top-notch, so it pains me to dock this review by one star for the cash-only policy. In this day and age of mobile payment services, digital currencies and contactless payments it is a real bummer to literally run-around in search of an ATM in the middle of winter, while your boss and colleagues are waiting to get back to the office. Again, the food and service is great, so JG's payment policy is the single thing that keeps us from coming back on a regular basis.
Be the first to ReplyBurger was overcooked and underwhelming.
I left full but unsatisfied. Very slow too as they only had a single bartender running tables on Super Bowl Sunday (even though we arrived way before the rush).
Be the first to ReplyMy boyfriend and I stumbled upon J.
G. Melon one Saturday evening and we enjoyed our experience. The bartender can make a fabulous Nigroni and Manhattan, the food was excellent, and total ambiance was very cute. I would have left 5 stars if it wasn't for the rude waitress who yelled at us to go to check in with the hostess before coming in, there isn't a hostess. I think she has a problem with the disabled and minority community, I saw she was mean to another Arabian group. It made me feel uncomfortable to witness and we would have left if it wasn't for the manager who made a table for us, we appreciated that. We will definitely come back but hope not to run into that one rude waitress.
Be the first to ReplyYou will not get a better burger in NY.
The sear is incredible. Also Bobby behind the bar makes the experience all the more amazing.

This is still our go to burger place! It is literally the best bacon cheeseburger I have ever had. Unfortunately, the fries recently changed but that doesn't away from the 5 star burger. We love sitting at the bar because the bartender is so nice and entertaining. We can't comment on anything else. We try to order something different from the menu but can't refuse the burger lol

Best Burgers on the Upper East Side!Note: CASH ONLY (atm close by!)I went on a Friday night and had to wait around 20 minutes for a table. I will admit the tables were a little crammed inside but the atmosphere was incredible. It felt like I was surrounded by regulars and true New Yorkers.Waitress was going a million miles a minute, and while she was great and fast, she came up to our table and asked what we wanted and when we delayed, she goes, I'll just come back and walked away. Recommendations:Burger - classic and deliciousCottage fries - kind of look like potato chips but were great. Definitely recommend each person at the table get their own.If your a burger foodie this is the UES spot!
Be the first to ReplyI can see why this place is one of the classics.
There's pretty much always a wait here so make sure to arrive earlier than you're planning to eat. It's also cash only. It's a pretty simple menu. We got burgers and fries. The fries are good-- almost a mix between fries and Potato chips. The burgers were juicy and perfectly cooked. The default is lettuce, pickles and American cheese for the cheeseburgers. They don't come with anything on the side.

This cash-only neighborhood stalwart still has amazing burgers, though they are uncomfortably served on saucers. They have abandoned their former round fried potatoes for something that is not fries, or potato chips, or particularly edible.
