I always come here for the croquette.
It's perfect when I'm craving fried food and want something besides regular french fries. The lemon and tonkatsu sauce is a great combination. The takoyaki is also great, but I wish it came with more pieces for $12. The service is amazing, I've never had a bad experience. Everyone is very friendly and helpful.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and beer selection.
It was really dark in the bar, but that's such a minor thing. I've also ordered delivery and it's was solid. I got the skewers
Be the first to ReplyNice cozy izakaya in the lower east side that we tried
Nice cozy izakaya in the lower east side that we tried after hitting orchard st paint for some supplies. We had skees of: chicken, scallops, and short rib. Karaage. Pretty good. Piping hot and crispy in the confusion I didn't add and my spices Takoyaki. I actually loved it. Hadn't enjoyed it in years Chicken katsu with cyrru sauce and rice. Decent. It was not as spicy as i woold like them. Cosr was good, for 2 of us over ordering it was under $100 before tip. It was chill and just easy for us to to get something good kinda quickly. We will definitely visit again.

I had a reservation on a weekday night and was seated right away. The space is pretty small so I imagine it would be busier on the weekends. I got chicken thigh skewer, pork belly skewer, and the scallop skewer. All the skewers were okay, and they had the same salty sauce. The pork kakuni was really tasty, so much that the meat fell off the bones and melted in my mouth.. The pork was well marinated, and had a good ratio of fat to meat. The broth was a nice surprise as well! The mentaiko mazzemen was delicious, creamy and rich. Although I wished there were more of roe flavor. The spice seasonings helped enhance the noodles. Our waiter was also super attentive and welcoming. I love the vibes here and would definitely come back to try the drinks and other dishes!

Came here for dinner with some friends! Super easy to make reservations online. I really like the grungey, nostalgic japanese feel inside. Extra points for projecting anime shows on the wall. The drinks are well made too. I really enjoyed my yakitori skewers, they're reasonably priced for being at a restaurant. The sauce was a bit too heavy for my tastes so maybe ask for less sauce if you want the traditional kare amount. Their matcha magarita is also very delicious.

Stumbled into this place with a friend completely on accident because our reservation at Sixty Three Clinton got nixed due to a burst pipe. Figured I needed to get completely hammered after my bad luck. And I knew izakaya would do the job. Probably my third Izakaya experience and easily my best. The employees have a deep knowledge of sakes and Japanese beers. ALL of the food we got was absolutely divine. Especially the kushiyaki items. Those combined with copious amounts of sakes I can't fully recall and Orions led to a truly religious escapade on the Lower East Side. I wasn't one of these soul-stirring, slightly aberrant individuals that believes strongly in some omnipresent invisible hand of fate before Izakaya Juraku. Now... I'm not so sure. I missed a starred meal, but that burst pipe led me to this sanctum. I cannot imagine an alternate universe without me knowing about Izakaya Juraku.
Be the first to ReplyHad a great time with friends here for Friday night drinks.
It was a casual but intimate experience, and the bites we got were exceptional. We actually ordered the loaded karage fries 2x in the one sitting.
Be the first to ReplyI'm back here again, but I've been ordering Izakaya Juraku
I'm back here again, but I've been ordering Izakaya Juraku from DoorDash since I don't have time to go in person. Get the Kiyo special!! Like Kiyo says on the description, just do it. I devoured mine in a couple minutes
Be the first to ReplyWe found Izakaya Juraku after a visit to the Tenement
We found Izakaya Juraku after a visit to the Tenement Museum...it's around the corner. A few of us are going to Tokyo and Osaka next month and we decided we needed to practice our Izakaya skills. We were SO happy we made the choice. There were 4 of us and we were promptly seated for our 715 reservation on a cold January Saturday night. While my friends had Japanese beer (excellent selection) I had a soju cocktail with fresh grapefruit (after a week in Mexico, I am still weaning myself off of Palomas) that was pretty tasty and large enough to serve as a refreshing beverage. Beyond a GREAT beer/sake/booze selection (I would give an 11 if they had Yamazaki 18 year!) the standouts were the food and the great service. We had SO MANY skewers. Each was at least pretty good and most were excellent. The highlights for our group were the mushrooms, the hokkaido scallops, and the pork belly, but they were all really tasty and well cooked. The karaage was perfectly fried, juicy and delicious. And the takoyaki were outstanding--even down to the dancing bonito flakes as the dish was brought out. And the yakiniku--the beef short ribs--we really perfectly cooked--tender but toothsome slices of pretty succulent beef in a slightly Korean almost bulgogi sauce. Really very good meal. We never made it to ramen but will next time, for sure. Prices are perfect, selection is really exactly what you want (I mean, you COULD add chicken hearts or chicken skin skewers) and the service was impeccable. I hope the neighborhood catches on and makes this a go-to joint that sticks around for years. Excellent evening, deserving of all FIVE stars!!
Be the first to ReplyFinishing up one of my last reviews of July to celebrate
Finishing up one of my last reviews of July to celebrate New Years. Why not? I went to this izakaya with a bunch of others several months ago as per most of my other recent reviews. Shoutouts first goes to their drink menu compared to even most other izakayas. They might not have the sake selection compared to some other places but the beer selection from all across Japan is better than most craft spots and they also have a wide variety of other liqueurs including a nice shochu collection to cocktails to other. I believe I had the Japas Black Daruma which is an imperial stout followed by some type of shochu drink later. The lighting was a bit dark for photos and the staff was friendly and dealt with our large group quite well. We had three different Yakitori; Chicken Thigh, Skirt Steak, and Hokkaido Scallop. The latter was the best of the group with very tender delicious scallops. The steak was alright and the chicken was decent. They would all make pretty good bar food while going through their drink selections. The Signature Karaage was very solid. It came out very freshly fried and was quite hot with tender chicken and a lightly spicy mayo. There was also an excellent version of the Pork Kakuni referring to a braised pork belly. Very tender pork with a lot of fat of course as expected and the shishito peppers on top was a nice touch. The following dishes were split between more people. The Gyudon or Gyu Don as listed on the menu was solid. Listed as braised sliced beef and onion with egg, served on white rice with pickled ginger and scallion, the beef was tender and not too sweet compared to some other spots from the onions. The egg was properly made and overall it was a solid donburi. The Miso Bacon or Japanese pork belly marinated in red miso, Hitachino Anbai Ale, maple syrup and smoked with cherry wood was excellent. Very tender sweet pork. The portion is small for the price but they clearly put a lot of effort into it and it's not like they're marinating it in a cheap alcohol either so it's honestly worth it. We also got the Mentaiko Mazemen. The Pasta-style ramen dish with spiced pollock roe, fresh shiso, and shredded seaweed. The noodle texture was good but I found that there wasn't enough Mentaiko. It was more like a creamy pasta and not salty enough for my liking. This was probably the other weakest dish along with the katsu listed below. The Pork Katsu Curry listed as Japanese curry with Mugi-Fuji pork cutlet and Japanese pickles was the other weakest dish. The curry even by the other Japanese curry standards was a bit on the light end and the pork while tender had a bit too much batter. Portion was decent but it was just OK. Outside of two of the entrees, the food was pretty good. Very good alcohol selection and the smaller plates in particular were excellent. There's better izakayas but still it's solid. Low 4.
Be the first to ReplyMight be a bit of a stretch to call this an "anime-themed"
Might be a bit of a stretch to call this an "anime-themed" bar, HOWEVER, the decor is still super fun! Came last night on a Thursday around 7-ish; no wait time and they even seated me at a table without my whole party being there yet. Note: no backs on the chairstools here, so come correct with your posture and core strength. ALL of the staff are SUPER friendly, and the waiters were oh-so-attentive, especially Prescott! :D They played good music and the overall atmosphere was dim and chill. We got a variety of dishes including the brown butter ramen and seaweed salad, and a bottle of the flowery Sayuri sake, which were all decent. What I will recommend MOST though, is the signature karaage and the yakiniku! The karaage came out RIDICULOUSLY fresh, like I'm talking steaming, perfectly crispy, amazingly juicy inside, too hot to even touch with your fingers to rip a piece off at first, and oh-so-well-seasoned. Warning, the spicy mayo it comes with is INDEED actually spicy, and I don't do well with spice BUT I ATE IT and endured fiery breath, cause it was THAT worth it. The yakiniku was my mom's and I was low-key jealous because I'd recommend that over the ramen, hands down. Once again, DELICIOUSLY seasoned meat, also somehow slightly crispy on the outside but perfectly tender when bit into with an awesome sauce, and get a side of rice to go with it. I finally found some anime representation toward the back of the place, near the restroom, haha (which was ultra-clean!). But seriously, I'd recommend this place on the service alone; the super cool ambience and decorative touches (like the samurai sword door handles) are just an extra nice touch, and I would most definitely return to try that delicious-looking bacon I saw them cooking on mini-grills and then bringing the mini-grills with said bacon still on them directly to other patron's tables.

Such a fun little restaurant! This is where the Old Man Run Club meets on Saturday mornings, and they always have great snacks and vibes. I got the chicken katsu cutlet and shiso fries this morning after my run, and both were super crispy and flavorful! Just what I needed for a post-run recovery! Check this place out if you want a casual time with good drinks and eats!

Have gone a couple of times with a group of friends for food and drinks. Think it's a good place to go but it's a bit pricey. The skewers are pretty good here ( one of the best places I've had). I think all the bar food is pretty good too to snack on with a couple of drinks.Good ambience, wide selection of Japanese drinks and foods, perfect place to go with friends who are not on a budget haha.

Came to this place after work with friends on a Friday evening. We were a party of 4 but made reservations in advance. We ordered so many things to try, not pictured were the mentaiko carbonara. I was in the devouring mode by the time it came out. Food came out really quickly despite how busy it was. My favorites were the mentaiko carbonara and the squid calamari. They were generous with the amount of squid that came with the order. The mentaiko carbonara was made from thinner maybe ramen noodles, not the usual pasta noodle. But the flavor was super rich and creamy. This place was one of the better tasting Izakaya places I've been to. Service was also really good with the waiter checking in on us and refilling our water regularly. I got the yuzu ginger ale but it wasn't the best alcoholic drink IMO so I would try another cocktail next time. Tip: Make sure to book a reservation in advance. I believe there is also a fee if your party is a no show.

I brought my mom who was visitingand roommate. Can't recommend this place enough- thank you Kiyo!!!
Be the first to ReplyMy wife and I had dinner here on Saturday night, 7pm.
I had a couple Sapporo beers (which I wish had been colder and in a colder mug, even though I saw them stored in the beer fridge). We ordered maybe 7-8 things, and loved the chicken pieces (deep fried, and a very tasty spicy sauce). Most other items were middling or not great. Shishito peppers were small and seemed more microwaved than blistered fresh. The seaweed salad was also fine, not special. Gyoza/dumplings were not grilled and seemed steamed (not crunchy at all). So, not great. One of the chicken items (karashee?) was great; others were average at best. Beer was fine but warmer than I like.My wife paid, and I think the total as $102? But I didn't see the total bill so am not sure about that or the tip amount.

Atmosphere: This place is perfect if you're looking for a late night izakaya option. Super chill. If you're into Japanese food/culture, and like restaurants like Kenka, you'll love this place. The decor is awesome, and they play classic anime like City Hunter on their TVs, and project episodes of One Piece onto the wall. Heads up, this place usually requires reservations, but you can get a seat at the bar if you don't have one.Food: I've noticed that food at izakayas tend to be lower quality than if you were to go to a full-blown restaurant, for example. But honestly, you don't go to izakayas for the food. You go for cheap, good eats, a nice vibe and drinks. And this place delivered on those fronts. I ordered the Brown Butter Miso Ramen, and as a ramen lover I'd give this a 7.7 out of 10. It really tasted like buttered popcorn mixed with ramen, but hey, I'd still eat it. We also got Takoyaki and Karaage Loaded Fries. One thing I should say about this place is that their beer selection is HUGE. If you're a fan of imported beer or sake this place is like heaven.Service: Service was amazing. So we didn't have a reservation, but they let us sit at the bar. And the bartender was super nice. He gave us good recommendations on food and drink and then he even gave us a Matcha Bomb on the house! While I can't guarantee they will give complimentary drinks out for anyone who visits, just know you can expect good service if you sit at the bar! The owner also helped us identify the anime playing on the TVs. He's quiet, but a nice man for sure.

Food was good! Especially the karage fries and yakiniku!! We got 2 orders once the first was finished. A group of 9 surprising the birthday boy in the corner of the restaurant made it a good place to hide. As the tables were bar designed with high tops and slim space for free leg/arm room, we made the birthday boy limbo to his middle table seating arrangement. Great atmosphere with drinks / entree and apps. The japanese spaghetti about $22 was delicious, just wish it was a tad bit more creamier/saucier( add a protein, it's only noodles). Chicken katsu with rice and curry was thick and filling. Ramen bowls looked great and not dense with oil. By the end of our meal, surprisingly they gave us matcha alcoholic shots, that's not on the menu. Not bad. Instead of the normal hot burn down your throat, it was brain freeze cold lol
Be the first to ReplyFun spot to have dinner or drinks with a group.
Tucked away in a street filled with bars and other small / quick service restaurants, Izakaya Juraku offers a relatively large menu with Japanese tapas and entrees that are shareable depending on how much you want to share haha.Came here with a party of about 8 and tried many things. Some notable items were the Karaage, Miso bacon, Grilled squid and Washu beef.TBH, nothing was OMG I can't wait to come back and have that again good- but nothing was disappointing either. Pair it with some drinks and you will have a nice chill night with decent to good eats and a good selection of Japanese beverages.
