Amazing food.
I got shio ramen. It had great taste and good texture and temperature. I ate it so fast I couldn't believe it. The service was amazing and I appreciated it. The people serving us were enthusiastic and kind. The place has good background music that isn't too loud or annoying. Overall, I loved eating here and would love to visit again!
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely fantastic ramen meal.
Our 17 year old son actually handed an additional $20 tip (from his own money) to our server, telling her how fantastic the meal was. He's never done something like that previously.Get on Netflix and check out the episode on Ivan Ramen on 'Chefs Table' (believe it was season 3). It will make you appreciate the meal that much more.We all loved this meal so much.

Host was very kind although I did not get her name, we decided to get the Japanese fried chicken , crispy Eggplant, and the Chicken Paitan ramen. Crispy Eggplant: really enjoyed this! Texture was on point, very crispy on the outside, inside was nice and soft. It comes plated on a sesame sauce, which paired nicely. Overall a pretty mild flavored dish, but done well.Japanese fried chicken: unfortunately I didn't like this as much as I was expecting to. Unlike a traditional Karaage, it has a wet garlic caramel sauce on it and comes w a shisho ranch sauce on the side. We ended up sending this dish back because it was too acidic for us, I felt the wet sauce took away from it. They very kindly comped it off our bill which was greatly appreciated. That being said the shisho ranch sauce was really good! Just wish I liked the actual chicken more. Chicken Paitan Ramen: enjoyed this! Comes w a soft egg yolk on top that you mix into the broth and ground chicken. Pretty light but flavorful, pretty heavy on the black pepper so if you don't like that, I'd get another dish, but I enjoyed the peppery flavor. Noodles were thin and cooked well. Also want to note service was very good and fast here! Shoutout to our server Aimee, she was very kind and helpful. Ambience was nice as well.

Be the first to ReplyI got the Chicken Paitan and it was just delicious.
Loved the entire thing. Perfect texture for the ramen for me. We also got the steamed pork buns which were fantastic. Also special callout to their menu which had videos for every item which was super cool. Loved the entire experience.

Ok this place for some reason gets a very hard shake that it doesn't deserve. 3.5 stars????!! What are we doing here Yelp family. This is a five star establishment. The ramen isn't super traditional but it is super delicious. I love the tonkotsu ramen. The apps are also money specifically pork buns and fried chicken. They have a great beer menu, wonderful sake selection, and lots of other good looking drinks. The vibe inside is really cool, lots of playful comics above the bar that I love. Also there is solid outdoor seating in the garden. My one qualm is that the service is a bit too fast. I like a well timed service that gives you ample time for apps, chit chat, and dinner. They rushed through everything a bit too quickly for my liking.

Love the story behind this place, watch the Chef's Table episode! Not your traditional ramen place, if you're looking for the classics this isn't it. Was able to book a resy a few days out. Nomz: Shared a couple of starters before having a bowl of ramen. Lemon Brussels sprouts: really tasty in terms of flavor, felt healthy, unlike most of the times I order it at restaurants Japanese fried chicken: came out a bit cold, a little sticky but good flavor, probably wouldn't order again Steamed pork buns: my favorite starter, delicious and flavorfulTokyo Shio Ramen: I'm a tonkotsu girl at heart but tried something different this time. For me lacked flavor, the tomato bites made it better but I only had one piece so couldn't make it last for the entire bowl. I did try the tonkotsu from someone's bowl, a lot lighter in flavor and density than your average, not for me. Drinks: Had two sakes bottles, didn't have much price spectrum, on the more expensive side. Unfiltered was my fav, on the sweeter side of sake but not overly sweet generally speaking. Service: Waitress was prompt and helpful.Ambiance: Small/cozy long setup of the place, hip art and outdoor back area. Nope or Dope: Nope, the pork buns were winners in my book but the ramen should be stealing the show and it didn't for me.

Service was great, answered all our questions, had pickles, cauliflower and fried chicken appetizers, ramen and some drinks.

The savory umami broth was absolutely delicious and paired perfectly with the chicken paitan. The waitstaff were professional and attentive. The place was small and packed but that added to the atmosphere. The chicken paitan was absolutely delicious. Would recommend if you are in the neighborhood and are craving ramen.

We had the spicy ramen, japanese fried chicken, pork buns and yuzu cheesecake. From head to toe it was a fabulous experience, my son really enjoyed his first ramen! He said it was his favorite meal in NYC, the only thing better than the ramen was seeing Hamilton.

5/5 because the eggplant was outta this world. Crispy garlic crust with soft juicy eggplant once you bite in, and the sesame purée is the sauce of my dreams I would carry around with me in my purse if I could. Featured on Chef's Table s3, this small restaurant specializes in thin noodle ramen. They have bar seats and also several tables for which I was able to make a reservation for on resy. Portions were a bit smaller than usual and the chasiu for tonkotsu was more lean/firm than preferred. We were still satisfied after especially with the rich broths. The different textures in my chicken paitan from the minced chicken and crispy chicken were more unique if you want to try something different!
Be the first to ReplySome of you might be aware of Ivan's backstory, some not.
In short, Ivan has two locations in Tokyo that have a strong following, and he spent like two decades in Japan trying to perfect his version of a shio ramen. Quick primer for new ramen heads:-Shio ramen: chicken stock, dashi (a kelp and fish-based stock), salt-Shoyu ramen: soy sauce-based flavor -Tonkotsu: pork bone broth that's very creamy, rich and cloudy (it's a lot more nuanced than that but trying to keep this short)Ivan's specialty is in shio ramen, although there is also shoyu and some other styles of ramen on his menu. This is a very caveated 4/5 rating. I'm a big tonkotsu guy; that's my favorite ramen. So naturally, my favorite ramen shops in New York are Ichiran and Tonchin, where they specialize in tonkotsu. My palate prefers very strong flavor, salty af, rich, fatty, creamy, etc. So this review will be most relevant to those who have a similar palate as mine.Shio ramen (4/5):-I'd describe the flavor/saltiness/richness level as fairly mild and subtle. I can pick up some of the creamy subtleties but to me it was a bit too subtle. -Overall, the dish is decently good and satisfying, although I will note that as you drink more of the broth, more dashi (the sweet-ish kelp/fish stock) is concentrated towards the bottom so it will taste sweeter as you go. You can mitigate this by gently stirring the broth as you eat. -A+ job on the egg. Perfectly executed. Major points here-A+ job on the pork chashu as well. I personally prefer pork shoulder chashu (the lean cut of pork, which is rare in New York), but I can appreciate a really good pork belly chashu (the one that is fatty and melts in your mouth)-The noodles were good; chewy and starchy-I appreciated the fact it was a simple bowl without nuking it with toppings, which I view as a sign of covering up for mediocre taste of the broth-I admire Ivan's dedication to his craft, but this wasn't to my palate. Didn't knock my socks off, but you may really love itSpicy ramen (3/5):-This is basically a tantanmen. I think I've had better tantanmen elsewhere. This is decent, but not at the same level as the shio ramen. I'm glad I ordered both-I find that the flavor is more than adequately flavorful/salty, but one-dimensionally so. It lacks something else, whether it's fat to cut through the acid or some other nuance for this to really be A-tier or unique versus a run of the mill ramen shopConclusion: definitely worth a visit just for the fact that Ivan is an important figure in ramen culture; tonkotsu lovers or people with salty palates like me should temper their expectations, otherwise you may really enjoy itOther than that, the service we received was really exceptional, to a point worth mentioning and complimenting.
Be the first to ReplyReally disappointed.
Instagram sent me and turns out it was overhyped. The ramen taste was off and the prices were high. Wouldn't do it again.
Be the first to ReplyOverall, I'd say I was pretty happy with my meal here.
Staff were super nice and our waiter took the time to explain some of his favorite dishes. Ordered several appetizers and wasn't the greatest fan of the green beans but I liked the eggplant and fried chicken. Wished the chicken was a bit more crispy but flavor was good and really liked the sauce it came with. Ordered the chicken paitan ramen and was pleasantly surprised by the depth of flavor to it. Noodles had good texture, broth was rich without being oily, and the crispy chicken bits added some nice texture. Had the yuzu cheesecake for dessert-- thought the yuzu flavor was really mild and could've been stronger. Also while I'm familiar with the concept of a burnt top/basque cheesecake, I think they overdid it here because I was left with a fully charred top layer to scrape off and the inside wasn't gooey at all.
Be the first to ReplyThe spicy chili ramen is sooooooo mf good omg.
I crave it every day of my life. The cauliflower appetizer is also really really good. At first I was like "hmmm do I really want cauliflower?" But the answer is yes, you do.
Be the first to ReplyIt was just okay.
My Japanese partner had warned me that they didn't think it was great but when my cousin visited and had it on their list I decided to see for myself. I am not sure why it's appeared on so many lists of must try Ramen when I feel that the price and quality are just about average. Also I think the owner/founder is a white guy? Maybe that's why the taste just doesn't live up to quality, authentic ramen.

The vibes were right with this one! We went around open and the place was already jumping! I ordered the steamed pork buns to start. They were scrumptious! Our party ordered 2 orders (4 total). I went to reach for a bun and my friend DeAndre reached for one at the same time. We touched hands!! My heart started racing and I got the butterflies. Would this be the day we kissed? I snapped out of it when I remembered I was heterosexual. I needed to order a drink and get my mind off what just happened. I got Bellwoods, "JELLY KING". I am not normally a fan of sours, but this was a fruit forward sour. 1 word, delicious. It was perfect to put the questionable event that just occured behind me. For the main course I got the Tokyo Shio Ramen. It was other worldly! It was the umami bomb I didn't know I needed in my life. I took a big slurp of the broth. When I look up from slurping the broth I lock eyes with my other friend Ryan. Simultaneously a dribble of broth rolls down my lips to my chin. The butterflies were back. I needed to remind myself "Cian you are heterosexual". Things were getting tense. I was getting hot, starting to sweat. I needed an ice cold drink to wash these thoughts away. I ordered a Asahi, "SUPER DRY" a Japanese Rice Lager. It was the cold refreshing beverage I needed to get through this meal. All in all a great family friendly environment that serves great Ramen! I will be back!

It was quite packed on a Thursday night! I ate a giant pile of spicy pickles as an appetizer and ordered the classic tonkotsu for my entrée. I would definitely come back cause the food was great and the staff was really attentive and nice. I'm deducting a star because I wish the ramen portions were slightly larger.
Be the first to ReplyI love this place because there is no mystery! What you see
I love this place because there is no mystery! What you see on the menu is exactly what you get! Very rarely does the food actually come out looking like the menu photo, but it does here and I totally appreciate it...especially with food that I don't know too much about! There's no missing ingredients, no surprises...exactly what you order is what will come out. The flavors are amazing, service is great and I really enjoyed every dish that came out! I highly recommend

Everything I've eaten has been amazing, but my standouts are all the appetizers and especially the Seafood Tsukemen (shrimp toasts with rye noodles and a bisque-like sauce)--OMG. All the ramen is great, too--incredibly flavorful broths, amazing rye noodles.

Ivan Ramen called me after I sent an email to their website portal. They 1. apologized that that happened and 2. explained the situation.Sounds like the server was a newer server and didn't realize the policy. Hope he doesn't get punished or anything. They said it was their fault for not giving him the proper information/training, which is the right thing to call out - don't blame, take responsibility. They also said that this is not their policy. Apparently, sometimes they have like an uncorking fee, but they usually wave it. I'll leave the review below untouched, but I'm incredibly glad to have this happen. The person who talked to me seemed really considerate and sad that I had a bad experience. They also essentially said they were glad to receive this kind of accountability, etc. After this, def willing to recommend - they might have even convinced me that chicken-based ramen can stand up to pork-based.Food was great, huge issue with service. I'll talk about both.Food: Food was great. I liked the ramen. I had fried chicken and chicken paitan ramen. Both were good. I prefer pork-based ramen, but I figured I'd get the chicken since they specialize in that. I would have rated this 4-5 stars if I were planning to write a review on just the foodService: Waiter was nice and all, but there was exactly one thing that made me really angry. It was my friend's birthday and we were all having an excellent time. We were respectful and ordered a cheesecake for dessert. We also had brought some cupcakes, which - yes - you sometimes aren't allowed to bring. Seriously, though, we all ordered food and even ordered dessert. They weren't trying to rush us out either. Anyway, we open it up and are about to dig in, but the waiter came over and said, "hey all, as much as I'd love for this to happen, my manager would kill me if I did." We respectfully put the cupcakes away, finished the cheesecake, continued our conversation, and eventually left.Ok, this was super frustrating. I have no idea if it's a restaurant policy, a manager policy, or if the waiter just made it up. I don't really care. It was my friend's birthday and making us put our cupcakes away was ridiculous. If none of us had ordered food, whatever, I get it, but we all ordered plenty of food, had some sake, and dessert. He literally ruined the experience and for what? If he had said "hey guys, it's our policy to not let food in from outdoor places, but I know it's your birthday, so just don't do it next time," I'd come back. Quite frankly the manager shouldn't be making his workers feel bad for accommodating customers. Not only did it not make us leave faster (since we still were enjoying the after dinner chat), but it also ruined the experience for two of us. Maybe there's some law or something, and if so, I'll consider amending this review, but there's no good reason to make customers feel bad, so that they're forced to buy your dessert. Look, you can even have a no outside food policy, but if the customers are already there and about to dig into dessert, don't make them put it away. I didn't buy dessert and won't recommend Ivan to people. Again, unless there's a legal issue with us bringing food, this is poor, poor management. I know customers can be super annoying and entitled and stuff, but this made me mad.So, if you want good ramen, by all means go. I'm not writing this review so that people don't go. I'm writing it so that whoever made the policy will see this. I'm guessing Ivan, whoever he is, just really wanted people to enjoy ramen. I doubt that what the restaurant did is in that spirit. For the record, I'm planning on contacting management and telling them about this. If they respond there or here, I will probably come back and edit this.

Delicious ramen! And the steamed buns were some of the best I've ever had. The place was pretty packed when we went, but everything still came out pretty quick. If you like ramen, you should check this place out!
