FOODIES DREAM
This place was absolutely mind blowing for food. I couldn’t believe the variety in this humble establishment. Full of locals and the most delicious delightful food and people I didn’t want to leave. The dishes were so cheap it was mind blowing.

I like to visit the Tanjong Pagar Market and Food Centre. Take a train on the Green Line and stop at Tanjong Pagar MRT station. Then walk about 100m and you will see Tanjong Pagar Market and Food Centre. The market is on L1 and the food centre is on L2. There is a wide variety of Chinese ,Malay and Indian food. The food is good and the price is reasonable. I like the char kway teow, the kway chap and the coffee.
The place is crowded during lunch time as the office workers flock here for their meals. Service is prompt and the price is only $3 to $5.00. The Lor Mee is also very popular but the best is the char kway teow.
Unique option and clean
I was attending a 2-day course at International Plaza on `Creating Fabulous Info-graphics in PowerPoint.'. On the 2nd day, I decided to visit this hawker center for breakfast.
It was a short walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT station. I like hawker food because of the local taste. It is representative of our Singapore born unique culinary culture. There are varieties and food are cheap as rentals are subsidized by the government.
If you are a tourist and left without trying our hawker food, you are deemed not to have visited Singapore. We are proud of our hawker food and I have made an attempt to visit as many of our hawker centers as possible. It has become an integral and indispensable part of our food culture.
This hawker center has been in existence for many years. It is not very big but is one of the cleanest food court I ever came across. The stalls look new and the tables are well-maintained and clear of any leftover food and utensils. Thus, one would not find any pigeon flying in to feed on the leftover. Big thumb up to the cleaners and stall holders for diligently maintaining such an environmental friendly place for all the customers.
The hawker center also boasts of her varieties of local specialty food. There are not many Hakka `Lei Cha' rice stalls in Singapore and was surprised to find one here. Hakka Lei Cha is a traditional culinary specialty of the Hakka people and is a healthy green food option as the food ingredients comprise mainly a variety of vegetables, soy, grains, beans and nuts. There is also another equally healthy Hakka Yong Tao Fu stall where fish paste stuffed in a varieties of vegetables and soya bean curd are sold. The stall's name is `Rong Xing Yong Tao Fu' one of my favorites.
I noticed the Rolina Traditional Hainanese Curry Puff stall won the Michelin 2018 award. The stall seem to have operated since 1976 and beside the curry puff, the stall also sells Yam and pumpkin cakes and curry chicken and egg. I feel proud of this stall to have won the prestigious food award.
This hawker center is also famous for her appetizing and fragrant congee porridge and is reasonably priced. I never missed having a bowl of fish congee here. It is delicious.
From the newspaper cutting pasted on her stall, Ah Seng Laksa and Prawn Mee seem reputable. If you are a tourist, you should not miss the spicy Singapore Laksa and also the Prawn Mee. Both are great local delicacies.
I saw many customers ordered Fish Ball noodles for their breakfast and a number of them had wanton noodles from the `Lucky' stall. The ingredients look attractive and sumptuous. The prices are also around the range of $3/- reasonably cheap.
There is also another healthy `Spinach & Soup' stall. First of its kind, I saw at hawker centers. There is also another Nasi Lemak stall and I saw a number of patrons ordered this for their breakfast.
Other than these local food stalls, there is also one stall selling Thai food and another stall selling Korean cuisine.
I did not see much crowd during the morning and by 4 pm when I went there again, many of the stalls had already closed. It seem most of the customers are the office workers who patronized for lunch.
Business is competitive as there are many restaurants and eateries nearby. Most customers are the office workers working at the vicinity. It would not be advisable to come on weekends as most stalls would not have opened for business due to the poor demand.
Chinatown and Maxwell Hawker Center not a short distance away and seem to draw more crowd. Yet, I found this hawker center unique, clean and with many healthy local choices.
Freshest Yellow Fin Tuna Jaws, Cheeks, Chutorro and Otoro.
Found these 2 market stalls at the Tanjong Pagar Plaza #01-22 and #01-23 respectively. All their tuna items were so fresh. In fact just a few days back, those tuna were still swimming in the Indian Ocean. Purchased some of the bellies, cheeks and Jaws back for a weekend tuna feast. The bellies were eaten sashimi style and they were melt in the mouth fresh. Pan fried the tuna cheek with black pepper and himalayan pink salts and I regreted not getting a few more packs. The Kama Jaws were smeared with sambal chilli and grilled over the BBQ pit. The taste and freshness are to die for.
Be the first to ReplyEat where the locals eat.
When in Singapore we love to eat where the locals eat. Great range of local dishes cooked on the spot and all soooo cheap.
Be the first to ReplyTypical hawker centre. Reasonably priced
There are 3 food centres within walking distance from each other (Maxwell, tanjong pagar and chinatown).
This is the smallest of the 3. However, still has a good variety of stalls. Also reasonably priced for a city centre hawker e.g. $4 for a bowl of porridge.
Would still prefer to go chinatown food centre for more variety and cheaper food.
Amazing for dinner
Seemingly little food choices at night, which is why it’s always empty, but the stalls open are honestly pretty great? Had the Bak Kut Teh and fishball noodles and chicken rice on separate occasions and it was all pretty good!
