ION - The Harbour Valletta Reviews from The Last Year
Perfection
Hopefully our photos will evidence the quality of food and passion in service and presentation. We ate there when it was a 1* Michelin, just a few days after our meal we hear it was awarded 2* Michelin status, the only 2* on the island. The whole eating experience was 2*. Each dish I ate was stunning, others in my group were of a similar opinion.
Exceptional!
My husband and I are still stunned with the experience we went through. We have been to several Michelin awarded restaurants but this blew everything out of the water. Service was impeccable! Our sommelier Peter was very knowledgeable and patiently explained the wine list and we had some of the best red, white and dessert wines. The dishes were all well explained. Each dish was a piece of art in terms of presentation, taste and texture. Exceptionally creative and demonstrates what can be done with food at a high level! Absolute gastronomical delight and inspirational creations! I always do balanced reviews and my only comment would be that they could have gone just a little extra with it being my birthday or even a glass of wine on the house for them getting their second Michelin star today! It's just a tiny feedback :) I have never thought of going back to a Michelin restaurant except this one.If I come to Malta again, I would definitely go again! They are well deserving of their two Michelin stars and hopefully they get a third one as well! It was amazing to meet the chef in person as well.He was very friendly and it is an amazing day of celebration for him!
Disappointed
We had a booking for friends and family and went with high expectations.the meal was 14 courses, some of which were exceptional. The service was good. However the flavours were not always balanced and there was an over emphasis on mousses and foams. We had warned the restaurant that one of our party (me) had a severe dairy allergy and they had kindly accommodated that by finding me alternatives. However, after dinner, I had a severe allergic reaction to and I can only assume that I was mistakenly served one of the regular courses instead of my alternative. Not a good end to the evening.
The best place in Valletta
Great place with views, good service, and excellent tasting menu… one of the best places on the island, we especially liked the first ones.
Optimal
A well deserved Michelin star restaurant!! The staff was very kind, the head nurse spoke Italian so he helped us choose the dishes, one better than the other 👍👍👍 I absolutely recommend!! The fair price for the cuisine they proposed is however much lower than the prices in Italy
One star worth two!
A breathtaking culinary experience. We had the 14-course tasting menu with food and wine pairing. An explosion of flavors in every bite, from start to finish, not a false note! Congratulations to the whole team.
Exceptional
Amazing in a word. This place lived upto the expectations the food 10/10 as expected at a Simon Rogen establishment the menu exceptional the wine fresh and crisp the food was thought provoking, inspiring and so full of flavour the service was exceptional from the whole team but a special mention to Arsene who was brilliant he was discreet, informative, fun and he adapted to some menu alterations by a member of our party superbly thank you
Could do so much better - lost its way!
No doubt that the view is good, looking over the harbour- but sadly the atmosphere and food are lacking! A lukewarm receptionist who just pointed to the lift and then a disinterested waitress showed us to the table without any introduction or genuine greeting. The set meal is a fair price and whilst some dishes were presented by waiters with genuine knowledge and care for the origin of food and cooking method- others were placed down with no interest- guess you have to be lucky with the staff serving. The food was a mixed affair- naturally they were small portions as we have come to expect (albeit this is unnecessary and for vain theatre), but between us half the dishes were underwhelming and half were exceptional. The salt baked celeriac for which we had high hopes was lost in an overweight sauce of singular taste. Much the same for the seabass. But the most inexplicable and horrendous offering was the side of so called buttery new potatoes which we paid extra for. Just take a look at them in the picture with the fish. It was like the last cold offering from a motorway service carvery!! Cold chewy half roast potatoes that had been warmed- and no butter in sight- disgusted that they were allowed to leave the pass. Sadly then having picked the ION house desert- caramel mousse- I got what was conceivably a set custard with apple bits - akin to a supermarket dessert. In contrast my wife chose the masterful frozen Tunworth cheese- an inspired creation. If you plan to attend for a special occasion, you really must be aware that standards are most definitely of a casual level. Perhaps in attempting to ensure tables are filled, there is a loss of any management control to ensure respectful conduct from all guests . A table of Hoody wearing youths, spent a large period of their lunch on a video call to their mate, all shouting out across the table, filming each other, without any interjection by the staff - that’s appalling conduct. Valletta is full of amazing restaurants- this one is resting on its name and being surpassed now. Could do much better!
Mixed sadly
What an amazing location for a lovely restaurant with the best view, even at night. Having holidayed for 10 nights in Malta, we chose, as a treat, Ion, as our last restaurant to dine in and it was the best meal we ate all holiday, but then you would expect that given it’s Michelin rating and the cost. We thoroughly enjoyed our taster menu and having eaten at over 10 Michelin starred restaurants in our time, we could see why it had been awarded its star. The desserts were particularly exceptional and rate amongst the best we’ve ever eaten. We chose a supplement course of lobster and sadly that was a total disappointment. It was over cooked, difficult to cut, very rubbery and tasteless. So that was an extra E60 ill spent. It was a shame as all other courses were cooked exceptionally well. I wouldn’t have marked it down or even mentioned here as I tend to look for the good and not the bad, but our attentive main waiter (a friendly man from Albania) would ask each time if we’d enjoyed our course. Each time we gave an enthusiastic yes thank you stating what we’d enjoyed etc. When he asked the question of the lobster, which after all we paid a supplement for, we were honest and said it had been disappointing and explained why. To this there was no real acknowledgment other than, “oh sorry you did not enjoy”. There was certainly no suggestion of taking the supplement away or even the offer of a free coffee. It wasn’t the end of the world, or a massive issue, but if you’re training your staff to ask after our satisfaction, and when it’s perfectly clear that we’re not miserable moaners just after a freebie, what is the point of asking if you then just ignore the feedback? Even if he’d said he was sorry and that he’d report it to the chef, that would have been acceptable. It actually would have been fairer not to charge us the supplement, but clearly unless you’re giving lots of praise, then they are disinterested in your answer and a wee bit arrogant in their ignoring the complaint entirely. It’s not what you’d expect from such a high grade restaurant and although it did not ruin the evening, it marred it slightly because it would have been nice to have been treated with mutual respect. Ho hum. The young female sommelier from Hungary was fantastic and really knew her wines. The E90 wine fight was amongst the best we’d experienced. So, would we return? Sadly no because of the poor response to the very poorly cooked expensive supplement. Mistakes happen when cooking and we don’t blame the chef (he lightly would have been mortified if he’d been informed); we do blame the waiting staff response though and such a reaction leaves you feeling like you’d not return, because it more about the money for them than giving us a truly exceptional culinary experience. We understand that Simon visits monthly. I hope he reads the reviews and speaks to the staff on how to deal with these issues so that future guests don’t suffer the same experience.
Simon Rogan does it again!
A superb 14 course tasting menu. Outstanding food and superb service, but with a relaxed feel. Situated with a fantastic view from the Terrace. Not cheap, but definitely worth it.
Dinner with a view
We had an early booking and could enjoy the rosy light during sunset, see the night fall and the lights com out. The views from the resturant are really to die for. We really enjoyed the tasting menu, especially the local touches. Our favorites were the cured lampuki and the sea bass. Also the wine pairing was spot on. However, I really do not see the need to serve caviar at a restaurant that says to take their inspiration from seasonality and local produce. The visual aspect of the food is important, but unfortunately the lighting in the restaurant was so dim that we really could not properly enjoy the (likely) beautiful dishes. Of course with the dim lights in the restaurant the night view of the harbour is probably better, but are people here for the views or the food? Service at the restaurant was friendly and efficient, the dishes and wines were introduced nicely. Overall, we had a wonderful evening.
It was ok
We booked this as we were on an anniversary trip so wanted a special meal to celebrate. We had already had an excellent meal elsewhere and it was hard not to compare the two. Slightly unfavourably to Ion. The view is amazing. The service was simultaneously a bit much with many people coming and going whilst also getting things a bit wrong at times, re dietary requirements and who ordered what for example. Nothing major but also not what you expect when you’re paying a premium. I’ve eaten at starred places before and it made me remember why I don’t bother that often. The food was very good and we had interesting wines. We just had better elsewhere for less money and a better overall experience. I enjoyed it but also wouldn’t necessarily go back.
Great food - don't drink the water
The food was astonishingly good. I put it on a par with Sketch, a 3-star Michelin restaurant in Mayfair where we sometimes celebrate our wedding anniversary. The dishes were exciting and different. The service was fairly good, but one waiter was a bit too exuberant for a relaxing meal and he was completely dismissive of my complaint at the end. The loos were on another floor, so you had to take a lift. When we arrived we were asked if we wanted still or sparkling water from unlabelled opened carafes. We had a glass of water each and then ordered alcoholic drinks from the menu. At the end when we got our bill, we discovered we had been charged 5 Euros EACH plus service charge for the water (it was listed as "Freeflow"). It ruined an otherwise great evening. I'm used to being given tap water in unlabelled carafes and so of course I assumed it was free. On top of that, my 14 Euro cocktail wasn't very good - I could barely taste any alcohol in it. So, in summary, the food was amazing, but it didn't quite make up for the horrible, horrible feeling of being cheated out of money at the end.
Wonderful meal on last night of holiday
As expected , a superb tasting menu enjoyed with a splendid view over the harbour . One of the highlights of our short trip to Malta
Best dinner experience in Malta
Basically the best dinner experience we had in Malta. Amazing tasting menu with innovative and modern flavour combinations in a fabulous setting. Highly recommended.

Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
