Hit and miss
This score takes into account the bill, we were charged almost £800 for one night’s dinner b&b plus a few drinks. There are lovely touches and some genuine moments of joy - the garden in particular is a delight. The food was hit and miss and as such really disappointing. Canapés were out of this world and best I’ve ever had. My partner had lovely starter and main course, mine in contrast were disappointingly bland and felt cold/tepid. Desserts were a real let-down, probably because you’re forced to order them before you’re sat down - it’s difficult to pair food together from the menu descriptions. Cheese selection was one of the best I’ve ever seen and delicious. The service felt rushed and the food was pretty cold - a bit like being on a conveyor belt and not very relaxing. Breakfast was exceptional, even considering i’d had no sleep. Our room was pretty and nicely decorated. My wife loved its traditional feel which was great. The bed was very comfortable and the view over the reservoir was lovely. The room had a horrid smell of greasy extractor fan which i found disgusting - smelt like an old dirty pub and really let the whole thing down. The hotel don’t seem to care about this at all and I think the accept that this is how things are at the place. I never really felt really welcome or relaxed in the hotel, it’s stuffy and has no sense of fun or . You kind of feel you’re in the way or putting people out if you ask for anything - particularly hot drinks in your room, which come with lovely biscuits but were luke warm by time they got to us and the coffee/cappuccino was grim, tea was nice though. So it’s ok, I’m glad I went but wouldn’t go out of my way to stay again.
Be the first to ReplyProbably the best hotel I've stayed in
Recently visited this hotel and had an amazing experience. Only small which made the visit all the more enjoyable. The staff at the hotel were very friendly, polite and knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent, both the breakfast and dinner were up there with the best. Our visit was in the winter and we were not able to fully appreciate the magnificent gardens that surround the hotel. We were given the Lake room which had a magnificent view of the lake although the weather was not at its best. The room itself had everything you would require. This is not a cheap place to visit but this was a special occasion and will be remembered for a very long time. Booking is essential. Thank you for everything. Keep up the good work.
Be the first to ReplyBirthday stay
We were a party of 15 staying in seven rooms to help celebrate my wife's 50th. We have always enjoyed all of our stays at Hambleton and so were a little nervous at sharing our "special place" with others. We didn't need to worry.... Everyone had a truly amazing time and all of us felt very pampered for our entire stay. Nothing was too much effort for the whole team from helping to empty our cars of luggage, making teas and coffees and stoking the fires. We very much appreciated that the bar was automagically reserved for us to have pre and post-dinner drinks (excellent margaritas), and that we were able to use the same space for a light lunch of excellent sandwiches and salad. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

This was my second visit to Hambleton hall to celebrate my husband and a friend’s husband’s special birthday. We were not disappointed. What a truly wonderful experience. The staff are outstanding, always polite and attentive but also welcoming and friendly. No ask is too much. The hotel is so wonderfully comfortable, from the sofas next to the open fires in the lounge and bar to the bed and pillows. The food and drinks are no less than outstanding. The views are magnificent and it is so beautifully peaceful and quiet. We are planning our next visit already ❤️
Be the first to ReplyA quintessential stay and superb food.
A truly delightful and quintessential stay at the beautiful Hambleton Hall. We loved how traditional and beautiful it is, there are a couple of reviews stating it's a bit out dated but the charm here is how it feels like you're starring in a period drama! We stayed in the blue room and it was lovely. A beautiful lake view and over the gardens, truly delightful. There is something rather lovely sitting by a roaring fire, late afternoon drinking delicious cocktails. The food.....oh the food is fabulous! Absolutely delicious and we were left feeling very satisfied. The duck was sublime and my husband said the octopus starter was one of the best he'd had in a long time. The service is impeccable, professional, polite and courteous. The wine list is also fantastic, so much choice and the sommelier kindly helped recommend a delightful red to go with our meal. Breakfast is also marvellous, a lovely selection and cooked to perfection . The only tiny thing I'd have liked is a bit more ambience. There is no background music in the bar or restaurant and I truly think this would have made the whole experience even more perfect. Would we return? Absolutely.

Wonderful traditional hotel with amazing food in a beautiful house. Feels like you’re staying with friends. Every need is thought of and service is perfection. Many thanks to all the staff for a lovely weekend. We can’t wait to return in the Summer when the weather may be kinder!

Outstanding. The food was excellent and the bedroom was just lovely overlooking the lake. Perfect stay. This was a return visit and we have already booked to visit again next year. Idyllic country retreat. You leave feeling refreshed and spoilt. Thank you.

Even the pool for an early morning dip before an amazing breakfast a rare treat . This place isn’t cheap but you get a unique experience here and leave feeling special and refreshed. We will be back. Oh Jess thanks for the lovely service James the chef your dinner was amazing and sommelier Dom. your wine list is fact an epic poem. Thanks for a memorable Stay.
Be the first to ReplyDelightful country house, homely and comfortable, serving delicious food
This is a beautiful country house with a well deserved reputation for excellent food. The gardens are immaculately maintained, a real credit to the gardening team and the location is stunning. The staff were attentive, I thought, but not "in your face" - it's interesting how things have evolved there over the years; on our first visit in the 90's, the service was rather overwhelmingly full-on; now it feels much more relaxed and laissez-faire, a thoroughly comfortable experience. The food, as expected, was top notch; two of us ended with the cheese and we quite fancied a fig with it (as one of the puds was a fig tart, we thought there would be some knocking around in the kitchen) so we asked for and got the fig, which was marinated in something gorgeous and was the best fig EVER!!! My only (slight) criticism, if you can call it a criticism, is that the Hambleton bread is a bit on the crusty side especially when toasted but I'm probably being a bit picky. I wonder also why there are no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms. I've noticed this before, a bit unusual. Anyway, it's a lovely place, well managed and reassuringly expensive. Will doubtless return.

Absolutely the finest food we have ever eaten. Service was incredibly professional. Friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The sommelier was a walking encyclopedia and gave wonderful advice. All staff were superb in every parameter.

First ever visit and absolutely superb every member of staff was magnificent. We absolutely loved the system you have of no walk ins for drinks , coffee , food etc for none residents. There is nothing worse than having no where to sit as a resident when the seats are taken by walk ins . The food was magnificent and the goodie bag as we felt was a superb bonus . Stuart & Karenina
Be the first to ReplyGood but not as excellent as we were expecting
We stayed for 2 nights for an anniversary and although the hotel is a very good country hotel, we were disappointed in the level of service and general care and attention we were expecting. We last stayed ten years ago and thought that all aspects were excellent. The first issue was that we had expected that our cases would be carried upstairs for us, indeed my husband had a tip in his pocket to cover this. There was no porter in evidence so we carried the cases ourselves. Although the food was good, every course was either rich or creamy. The waiting staff were good and attentive. Ten years ago we appreciated and have talked about this often to our friends, the staff seemed to serve, disappear and quietly reappear from time to time to top up wine, clear plates and serve more courses. This time they were much more obvious, waiting at the end of the restaurant in a huddle. The wine waiter did a hard sell on us for a dessert wine which was not really needed. At the end of the meal, we were served a special plate with chocolate desserts and "happy birthday" written on the plate. This would have been lovely if indeed it had been one of our birthdays! One of us only had 2 courses and were charged for three. Small details I know but all adding up to a feeling of disappointment.

Treated myself to lunch and it was a great experience. I had a warm welcome and was escorted to the elegant Drawing room where I enjoyed a drink and a couple of canapes, and from there to the Dining room. My table had a magnificent view over the immaculately kept gardens with Rutland Water in the distance. The meal itself was lovely - 3 courses - and this restaurant certainly deserves its Michelin star status! Then back to the Drawing room for a hot chocolate. The service was impeccable. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon! A definite place to return to - maybe for an annual treat.

The hotel is delightful and staff are vey welcoming. Dinner and breakfast were outstanding quality. We stayed just one night but are already planning a return trip, hopefully not coinciding with a yellow weather warning!
Be the first to ReplyMy favourite hotel and restaurant in the U.K. by far
I have posted a previous review of this fabulous hotel/restaurant but still feel compelled to write another. Myself and my wife have been visiting Hambleton Hall for 40 years and it never disappoints. We went here with friends to celebrate my wife’s 60th birthday. The staff are incredibly polite and attentive. The accommodation whether it be the linen used or the quality of the mattress is superb. The highlight of staying here is undoubtably the food, the food is quite simply superb. The friends we went with were HH virgins and said quite simply that this is where they would like to hold their 70 years of age celebration. They were overwhelmed by the whole experience. Thank you Hambleton Hall for making my wife’s special birthday a very enjoyable and memorable experience.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely fabulous!!
We stayed one night for my birthday celebration in room Treetops. Room compact with large bathroom (bath and separate shower). Well maintained, comfortable and excellent room service. Lovely views. All staff members friendly, welcoming and helpful. Food very nice, good drink choices and extensive wine list. Birthday card and lovely decorated birthday dessert too, lovely touch! Thank you so much for making our stay so special and memorable! We highly recommend a stay and will certainly book again.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect 24 hour break!
We were beautifully looked after from the beginning to the end of our all-too-short 24 hour stay. The original booking process was made very easy when I rang the hotel to ask about different rooms. Our stay was flawless. Cedar Room was very comfortable and quiet, and all the staff we encountered couldn't have been more courteous and friendly. Tea was produced in a twinkling after our walk round the peninsula, dinner was absolutely fabulous - we are still dreaming about all the courses - and breakfast in the morning had so much delicious choice. Our stay flew by too quickly but we look forward to returning.

Goodness me, this amazing hotel is ‘home from home’ for me. Throughout the years, it has never failed to delight and I am always in awe at how the high standards just keep on improving. Fabulous Staff really do make Hambleton Hall as well as the incredible food and wine. Cannot recommend Hambleton Hall too highly but in doing so risk getting my favourite room!!
Be the first to ReplyExceptional
This is an exceptional hotel. An oasis of calm where you can switch off from the pressures of everyday life. The staff are incredible and the quality and cleanliness of the bedrooms and public areas are of the highest order. The decor is traditional country house and totally suits the character of the building. The gardens are amazing and superbly maintained. One of the greatest delights of staying at Hambleton Hall is its location high up overlooking Rutland Water. Probably the most relaxing and enjoyable hotel that we stay at.

Have been visiting Hambleton Hall for a number of years and will cotinue to do so. It is just such a beautiful place to stay. From the service you receive from the minute you walk through the door, to the property itself and it's location and of course the outstanding cuisine. You just can't wait to go back for more.

We cannot fault this venue. The staff were excellent as was the food. Nothing was too much trouble and other venues could do well to match Hambleton Hall. The overall experience was not disappointing and left us feeling very happy. Well done all at Hambleton Hall.
Be the first to ReplyPERFECT!
We have stayed at this hotel four times and love everything about it. The food is delicious and well presented, the bedrooms and public rooms are spotlessly clean and well maintained. Friendly efficient staff especially Sarah, Tony and Dominique. The gardens are beautiful and it is lovely to sit on the terrace overlooking Rutland Water to enjoy pre dinner drinks. Can't wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful food and excellent service
I visited Hambleton Hall last evening as the guest of a friend of mine. From being greeted at the door to being waited upon, nothing was too much trouble. The staff were extremely professional, efficient and made the evening all the more enjoyable by their lovely attitude. Starter for me was carrot in various forms - including carrot ice-cream! Delicious! For my main course I chose the Hake, which was accompanied by razor clam and a sprinkling of caviar. Yummy! Dessert consisted of strawberries in various forms, which I had started before I remembered to take the photograph... Coffee was taken outside on the patio, where we had been served canapés earlier in the evening. I had only visited Hambleton Hall once before (in 2018) and that was for lunch. It still came up to expectations and was a wonderful experience. A huge thank you to all of the staff.
