Not sure what the 3 star review in the NY Times was all about
We went here for a late lunch on a weekend with friends from out of town. Except for one other family group, we were the only people in the restaurant, which was huge. The restaurant was fairly ornately decorated - lots of wood, etc. - but not particularly welcoming. The waitress helped us choose our meals, making sure that we knew how hot the various dishes were, and we ordered quite a lot of food. While everything was good, nothing really stood out. And for what was supposed to be a top notch restaurant, there were several thing that seemed odd - plastic cups for water, paper napkins, etc. Service was slow, and not particularly attentive, even though there seemed to be several people serving only two tables. All in all, a pretty ordinary meal in a somewhat odd space. It might have been better if there were more people there to give the place more life. Before lunch we had stopped at the New World Mall to take a look at the extraordinary JMart there, plus to look at the food court downstairs. We couldn't resist, so had some soup from the improbably named Nai Brother Sauerkraut Fish place in the food court. Probably one of the best things I have ever eaten...much better than anything at Guan Fu.
Be the first to ReplyNice ambiance with authentic Sichuan entrees
We had a dinner at this authentic Sichuan restaurant, which we thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience. The restaurant is located within a fairly new mall that was erected in 2017; the decor of the restaurant is both elegant and tasteful. We ordered the squid served on a hot plate, tendon in Sichuan sauce and a traditional appetizer, which the restaurant named it as Mr & Mrs Smith. The server is very professional and courteous, along with the nice decor of the restaurant made the dining experience rather enjoyable. The menu is quiet extensive, which you could enjoy wide variety of traditional Sichuan style entree. Overall, a great dining experience, the spiciness is authentic, slightly on the salty side.

Very well prepared Sichuan food spiced according to your taste in a place with excellent service that does not rush you through your meal.
Be the first to ReplyGood Vibes
My date and I randomly walked in here not knowing what to expect and we were the only people of color. The food was tasty and staff was attentive. Not sure I would visit again as the food is not really my cup of tea. Anywho, if this is your vibe the food was fresh and we felt well taken care of. We came an hour before closing and was not rushed out the door at 11pm.

I was very impressed with this restaurant. The interior is beautiful and the staff is friendly and attentive. The portions are pretty large, the standout dish to me was the mapo doufu, it’s very flavorful and has a great texture. I studied in China in college and the food here tasted exactly how I remember it from my time there. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for authentic Sichuan food, or just great food in general.
Be the first to ReplyAn excellent Sichuan restaurant
After reading the NY Times review, which gave this restaurant a 3-star, the first 3-star NYT has given a Chinese restaurant in god knows how many years, we decided to give it a try. We came away largely impressed. The dishes were nicely done and the service was attentive. All the dishes we ordered were "correctly" made according to their respective authentic Sichuan food standards. Our only complaint was that the restaurant, at least when we went there, did not accept Visa card, which caused us some inconvenience. Hope they will rectify that situation.
Be the first to ReplyNo Lunch For You
A disclaimer up front: we did not eat at this restaurant, but we tried! We were somewhat full of dumplings, but wanted to see what this highly touted (NY Times) Szechuan restaurant offered. We told them we only wanted to share one dish, but were shown to a table. Then the maitre d' came over and said there was a $50 minimum for lunch! This, when there was a hawker outside offering discount coupons to the restaurant! Btw, the place was virtually empty.
Be the first to ReplyAn exceptional Szechanese restaurant
Guan Fu is a cut above the others without a doubt. The restaurant itself is beautifully designed and appointed. The cooking is exceptional with a menu that includes all the familiar Szechuan dishes along with a range of recipes unique to them like the black fungus salad and the fried fish in ginger.
The main weakness is in the service which, while friendly enough, just has too many people hovering around and the waiters' inability to be really helpful. I think its a language issue and I'm ready to let it go.
No liquor license and you cant byob - I did miss a beer with this kind of spicy food.
Not for everyone
Clean, beautiful, great service, very good food, expensive. While they have many quite exotic choices including jellyfish, frog and turtle, if you like beef/lamb, there's only one dish available. And they don't take Visa, which is the main reason I'm not likely to come back there.
