Gonpachi has gone packing
When we visited the Miyako-Hybrid Hotel in Torrance on December 21, 2014, the hotel had taken over the Gonpachi restaurant and all references to the former name were gone. We were told that a new restaurant was being created under new management.
The new restaurant has a temporary menu that duplicates what the former Gonpachi restaurant offered. The only difference is that the current restaurant cannot serve alcohol until the new management obtains a liquor license.
The waitress who served us was an employee of the former Gonpachi restaurant. She was our server the last time we visited! The service was excellent.
The meal we ordered tasted the same as our previous experience--see my previous review for Gonpachi. The only downside was that we could not order alcohol and that problem is currently being rectified.
We were advised that when the liquor license is granted, the restaurant will be given a new name and the menu will be updated.
If alcohol is an important part of your meal, call to confirm that a liquor license has been granted. We were able to do without liquor, although a little Sake would have been a perfect choice!
On a Saturday night, the restaurant was nearly empty, making this a perfect romantic choice. What could be better than excellent food without a lot of background noise?
An excellent dinner at Gonpachi
We dined at Gonpachi for the first time recently. We were interested in their soba kaiseki, but because of our own time constraints, had the assorted sushi dish. The quality of sushi was excellent, and was as good as we can find anywhere. Service was good, despite the fact that the same waitstaff was servicing a huge family table (or 20 or so) at the same time. The pricing was consistent with a hotel restaurant. We also had an excellent buffet breakfast the next morning.

Please see my previous review for additional information on this restaurant.
Since my last visit, the cost for the Gonpachi multi-course dinner has increased to $75. My companion and I always split the dinner and add a side of shoe string French fries with a delicious garlic side sauce. However, the food is so delicious that one may decide to place two full dinner orders. We have relatively light appetites. Note: to enjoy the meal, one has to have an appreciation of fine Japanese food. A "meat and potatoes" person will probably not enjoy the cuisine as much as we did. If one does not like sushi, one may choose from a nice selection of other items.
Everything appearing in other reviews about the positive aspects of this restaurant is true. It is one of the best in Los Angeles. Located in Torrance, off the beaten path, it is not as heavily patronized as other fine dining establishments. Nevertheless, having reservations is a guarantee for a table in case a large group of businessmen appear.
We have established a pattern of eating here once every visit to Los Angeles. It is our twice yearly restaurant splurge.
Igor, our server, said that he has worked at the restaurant since it opened 5 years ago. He provided perfect service in an immaculately clean and comfortable environment, with classy decor.
Soba and sushi secret find
Hidden inside the Miyako Hotel is an amazing discovery! Celebrated a friends birthday and surprised to find they were participating in Dine LA, opened up more options. Party of seven with varying limitations (vegetarian, non-raw fish eaters, and meat only men), satisfied all tastes! Shared plates so had the opportunity to try a little of everything, udon was flavorful and perfect chewy texture, soba hearty and good temperature, very fresh sushi and sashimi, delicious fusion deserts. Definitely the new go to spot for Japanese multi choice option!

Great place. dineLA made us a dinner offer we couldn't refuse. The wagyu beef was amazing. The tuna and crispy rice definitely worth mentioning. So glad we finally tried this local gem.

I arrived early and had to wait for my room to be ready, being that I was a bit hungry and didn't feel like driving around I decided to have lunch here. The restaurant is classy and staff is very friendly. The service is prompt and pleasant. The food is very delicious and your lunch comes with salad bar. The atmosphere overall blends in with that of the Miyako hotel!

Went to Gonpachi for business - heavy hors'd eourves and happy hour. Whether you go here for their lunch, dinner, brunch on Sundays or happy hour - this place rocks the town! They have a looong beautiful table in the bar area which is a great place for conversations with business colleagues and partners. Aki-san in the bar is simply the best!
