Gibsons Italia Chicago Reviews
Gibsons Italia has a nice view, but the food was just okay.
I was expecting it to be fantastic, but it was mediocre. On a positive - The servers and staff were friendly and welcoming. We did tell the server that we didn't like things with added cream but he failed to mention that half of the things we ordered had some sort of hidden creamy sauce or aioli - which kind of soured the experience.
Feeling a little hungry we wandered over to Gibson Italia.
We requested (and were granted) outside seating. A lovely day in Chicago-we enjoyed the sunny but a little chilly day. Our waiter was very attentive! Bringing our menus while greeting us with a warm welcome. We decided to enjoy several different appetizers/salads/sides to make up our meal. The meatballs were delish! The perfect pre meal decision. We also had the avocado/crabmeat parfait. While we're were offered to have it chopped to be served we opted to have it left whole. Very tasty and heavy on the crab! The beet salad was absolutely amazing! Being a huge Beet fan-I was in heaven. Hubs dined on the spicy rigatoni-homemade in house pasta and the sauce was flavorful without being overbearing.
Amazing service & Amazing Food!
My friends & I came to Gibsons Italia to celebrate our friend's birthday. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a friendly host team. We were seated indoors in the 3rd-floor dining room. The view of the Chicago River was beautiful from the floor-to-ceiling windows. Our server Elijah was incredible. He was so personable & knowledgeable about the menu. He guided us through the menu, helping us choose the best courses. The food was absolutely outstanding. Elijah's amazing service & attention to detail, made our birthday girl feel so special. Definitely gives us a reason to come back. 5 Star afternoon for sure!
We feel in love with Gibsons Italia! We took a fancy
We feel in love with Gibsons Italia! We took a fancy elevator to arrive at the restaurant. Our entire experience felt luxurious and special from the wait staff to our meal to the gorgeous Chicago views from the patio. The Chicken Parmesan and pasta were mouthwateringly delicious. I'm glad I switched our reservations a few weeks prior. When visiting Chicago, add this to your list of places to dine. Buon appetit!
I called the restaurant and reached this impossible woman
I called the restaurant and reached this impossible woman who refused to provide me with an answer when asked if she could seat me in the dining room. Mind you it was early in the day. She kept on repeating the same lines over and over and over again until I hung up!!! She said she couldn't give me a time to wait or let me know if I could be seated. I asked her if we showed up right now would you seat us in the dining room. This was like talking to a brick wall! Unfortunately I don't recommend this establishment until they hire the proper people to answer their phones!! What clowns!! Unprofessionalism at its finest! We ended up eating elsewhere! What losers! They lost our business and who knows how many countless others lost their patience and refused to deal with an individual who sounds just like a robot caught in a short circuit!!! I will NEVER dine here again!!! Rude behavior!! The gal who answered the phone was deliberately stonewalling!!! Here is my prediction. Gibsons Italia will soon join the other cobbed web restaurants that went under in Chicago. They'll go out of business if this keeps up. Read the reviews on Google and Yelp and you'll soon discover they need to clean up their act and retrain their staff!!! That's a hard no from me folks! You been warned! Enter at your own risk !!!!! Run like your the last two monkeys boarding Noah's Ark and it's starting to rain !!! Food: 3/5 | Service: 1/5 | Atmosphere: 4/5
My husband and I have eaten at Gipson's every time we have
My husband and I have eaten at Gipson's every time we have visited Chicago. We like to think of it as a highlight of our trip. After this weekend, we will never recommend anyone to go nor will we ever go again. When you are spending a minimum of $250 (we spent more) for dinner there is a certain level of service that is expected. We made our reservations a month prior to ensure we had a table. We were first seated at a very tiny table that we considered a "afterthought" table. These are the kind of 1/2 sized tables that you would sit someone that was a walk in to just get them in the door. We were immediately unhappy and requested to sit in a booth or a different table. We were offered the worst location (but better table) and declined. We decided we would try and just stay at the table we were at because we were told that all the other tables and booths were spoken for and this was our only option. We sat there for about 10 minutes, and just couldn't sit there due to the chairs that were positively the most uncomfortable dining chairs we have ever sat in! I have sat in fold up lawn chairs that were way more accommodating! My husband got up and demanded we get another table. Finally, we were seated in a comfortable booth. Note: There were booths and bigger tables available and unspoken for throughout our whole dinning experience. So, the whole "those tables are spoken for" etc.. was not true. We had no idea who our waiter or waiters were.... we were never introduced. We were handed a menu with zero explanations regarding what they were offering. After a bit, someone came to take our order. We were given our food but never checked on...never asked if we need anything nor how the food was. The steak we had was very good as was the oysters. The mushrooms were gross. They tasted like burnt broccoli. The potatoes were just "ok". After dinner one of the wait staff plopped down a dessert menu...he didn't recommend anything nor ask if we had any questions. I actually did have a couple of questions because I wanted to order a dessert I had had there during another visit. After a few moments the waiter came back and asked if we would like to order a dessert and at that point, I just was too irritated. This place should have just had a had kiosk and zero wait staff for conducting the dinner orders. When we declined the desserts we were promptly given our check. No "Thank you", No "How was everything "...nothing! The atmosphere was loud and not inviting either. I don't know if this place has changed ownership or management or what!!! This place has turned into a 3 star ordering kiosk establishment. Words cannot express our disappointment!
Skip It!
Lets Begin, We made a reservation and asked for a view. First we were seated in the bar dining area at a back table, we asked for a different table. We were then seated at a table located closer to the window which overlooked empty patio tables. We were never given the choice of the restaurant on the 3rd floor. I am sure that location has a good view. The server was fine though not very helpful. I think rather inexperienced. Appetizers:. Caesar Salad - Tasteless Broccolini Salad - Better than the Caesar Artichoke - Good Small portions, we didn't have enough food and there was zero suggestion by the server. Main: The Steak: (we came here for the steak and the view) NY Strip - Very Good and cooked as ordered Chicago cut- Nothing Special -Skip it French puree - tasteless Bernaise - a joke..send the cook back to school (We wanted a Veg and the offering was out of season Asparagus) Dessert: Tiramisu - acceptable Spumoni - not sure what this concoction is, I remember the original Banana Gelato Tart - the best of the lot. Ambiance: From another reviewer and repeating here :"young women who were so happy to be here ( their dates didn't get it), the Bro culture in full bloom, lots of middle aged people wanting to be hip, business people doing business and every body else just "being there"" And its very loud! Don't go for the food. Its the scene , if you care. With all this said : There must be better places in Chicago, hope so.
From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed.
The atmosphere was inviting, the staff was attentive without being overbearing, and every detail, from the lighting to the background music, set the perfect tone. We only had appetizers, but they were fresh and flavorful--the oysters in particular were excellent. The Espresso Martini was one of the best I've had, perfectly balanced and the ideal way to end the evening. We left feeling satisfied and happy, already looking forward to coming back for a full dinner. A true gem worth recommending!
I have grown up eating prime, dry-aged steak at a venerable
I have grown up eating prime, dry-aged steak at a venerable Italian place in NJ, so I know something about steak. The $99 New York Strip I had at Gibson's Italia (Chicago) was truly the best version of the NY Strip cut I have ever tasted. Don't miss Chicago's other wonderful steakhouses, but flr NY Strip, this place comes in FIRST!
Amazing food except the AC was out in the restaurant and it
Amazing food except the AC was out in the restaurant and it was miserable. We asked the manager for a discount bc of this and he laughed in our face. The waitress was literally sweating while delivering our food. Beyond outrageous management. Disappointed.
Service was excellent.
This restaurant is beautiful. The steak was absolutely amazing. Very flavorful and I will be getting again. The spicy rigatoni was amazing, especially with the cheese. The mashed potatoes were definitely different. Caesar salad was amazing and the tiramisu was very good although I will say rich chicken parm was also good
Delicious.
Beautiful view. Probably one of the best steaks I have ever had. We had a big party (15) and the servers were kind and attentive. Would definitely go back!
Great dinner with work team
Our group of 8 had a wonderful time at Gibson’s. A perfect setting, outstanding drinks and food and great memories! Will definitely be back!
An early dinner with a great view.
We started with the valet parking, which is across the street and easy to use. We had an early reservation to accommodate a show that evening. We requested a table with a view of the river, and we got a spectacular view right at the window, of course very few people were also dining that early. I was a little put off that while my wife and I were dressed for a fine dining establishment the people who showed up later were not and were seated right next to us. The restaurant makes a big thing in its description of appropriate dress; however, they fail to follow their own guidelines. The service was very good and attentive, although they missed ordering one of the sides I had requested. The steaks were good, but somehow, I expected more from Gibson's. The baked Alaska was good but somehow also missed the spectacular mark. Don't get me wrong, this was a very good meal.
Hopping place, the scene, overpriced experience
They seem to know what it takes. All the hip, cool people are here. I saw a wedding pre-party with balloons and cake, young women who were so happy to be here ( their dates didn't get it), lots of middle aged people wanting to be hip, business people doing business and every body else just "being there". My friend threw his party. All the right food ( although too little of it), the right wine poured and tasted by the " name of the guy who's suppose to know wines"...my friend sent back bottles. The food was mediocre at best. The atmosphere was OVER THE TOP! WOW, spend a lot of money but at least you can tell your friends you were there. I'd bet you could do Wrigley Field for less.
A poor near miss!
They could do so much better with very little effort. Herded into an elevator then shown to a table with superb views of the back of the bar including sinks and garbage disposal was hardly a great start. My table was in nothing more than an access corridor for waitstaff and servers. I then had to ask for a drink and a menu and subsequently for a wine list. Service improved from there on but the damage wad done. This was NOT a fine dining experience as had been suggested by my friend in Chicago. The arancini had no detectable rice grains. (My choice of wine, a German reisling, was very nice but arrived well after my starter. Some weird flavourless pruee was presented instead in a soggy sauce. The fillet was perfectly cooked medium rare as I'd asked, asparagus side was delicious but potato puree was almost liquid. Saved by the roasted garlic and delicious horseradish cream. The highlights were a fantastic take on bombe Alaska, a very smooth Buffalo Trace bourbon and a nice black coffee. All in all poor value for the cost of the overall experience.
Perfetto
Beautiful view, delicious Italian food, excellent service and the best desserts, I strongly recommend this restaurant!
Good Food but Noisy
My husband and I had dinner at Gibson’s Italia for our first meal in Chicago. The food was delicious. The arancini was fantastic and we loved the filet and brussel sprouts. The chopped salad was just ok. Service was great, but the downside was the noise of the restaurant. It was incredibly noisy and the ambiance was not particularly cozy. Good food but not one of my favorite Chicago meals.
Best lamb chops in my life !
Absolutely fantastic experience, stunning views , phenomenal fresh seafood and lamb chops. exceptional service , can’t wait to go back and have already planned to as only visiting for a week .
10 out of 10
We celebrated Mother's Day with dinner on Saturday night. Great table, fantastic service, Patrick Barnes is the best.
Did not disappoint!!
Took my husband for his 60th birthday dinner on our Chicago trip. From the moment we walked in the door…we felt special. They greeted us by name and said happy birthday to him…every person we met! When I made the reservation I asked for a window table and told them about birthday and that he likes chocolate…we got it all! Superb attention to detail, wonderful dinner, attentive staff and a magnificent view. The prices are very reasonable, too!!! Would recommend and would most certainly come back again!! Filet was perfection, the “branzini”? fish was delicious and the $20 twice baked potatoe with truffle sauce was well worth it to split!!!
I recommend a reservation but there are sometimes open
I recommend a reservation but there are sometimes open tables in the bar area that are first come first serve. This restaurant is beautiful and the service is always spectacular. Every dish is cooked to perfection and wonderfully seasoned, you cannot go wrong with any of the dishes. The drinks are always exactly what you need after a long day. A cappuccino or an old fashion, you will not be disappointed. Do yourself a favor and try the apple and pumpkin buddino for dessert and thank me later.
Treated top shelf and flavor sensations.
I know I've seen the mushrooms in the menu in my he forest before but I guarantee you I cannot make them taste like this!
Lovely place for a special occasion, to bring visitors, or
Lovely place for a special occasion, to bring visitors, or just for a fancy night out! I came here with family visiting from out of town. Although the food and drinks were fantastic, the showstopper is the view of the skyline from the dining room. We were seated in a beautiful raised booth towards the back of the dining room, but the floor is tiered so we were slightly higher than the rest of the room and were still able to appreciate the amazing view. The food speaks for itself, and there is something for every taste. We enjoyed a seafood platter, a famous Gibson's filet, a couple different pasta dishes, and the tiramisu for dessert. Our server was welcoming and helpful. Fantastic and special night out with the best company.
Visiting Chicago and a friend recommended this place.
Wow. Did not disappoint. Sat in the bar and got lucky with a table by the window with a gorgeous nighttime view of the Chicago skyline. Stuck with appetizers and had a great meal. The oysters were great, The crab n Avocado parfait was a tasty surprise. The charcuterie plate was perfect to pick at. But, no matter how gorgeous the view was, no matter how good the food was, the true star of the evening was are server Carolina. Her smile and laugh was contagious. Her menu suggestions were spot on. Carolina was a ray of sunshine throughout the evening. A true superstar. We will be recommending Italia to everyone one we know coming to Chicago
This was our first time here, but our friends who live in
This was our first time here, but our friends who live in Chicago absolutely love it, so we decided to go here for dinner. We were able to grab a couple drinks at the bar while we waited for our table to be ready. We were sat shortly after and had an amazing view from the booth we were in. Our server was really prompt, kind and knowledgeable. We decided to try a variety of things to start. We ordered the East Coast oysters on a half show, meatballs and focaccia. They we all pretty good, my favorite by far was the bread. Super yummy! For our entrée, we decided to share the tomahawk ribeye and get the spicy rigatoni pasta. I really like the presentation of the tomahawk, but we ordered it medium rare and the steak was very extremely under. We kept it because we didn't wanna keep our friends from eating. The rigatoni was good, but not out of this world. Feel like it could have use some more flavor or kick to it. My friend ordered the risotto with scallops. I would say that was absolutely amazing and next time I would probably order that instead. Overall it was pretty good and would be open to trying something else on the menu next time we go.
My husband took me there for my birthday.
I liked the service because the place was packed yet we were served in an adequate time. The food was OK. I would recommend it.
Wow. Couldn't have been a more spectacular night. Gibsons
Wow. Couldn't have been a more spectacular night. Gibsons is the cream of the crop, we decided to give Gibsons Italia a spin and we were blown away. Attentive and caring staff from start to finish. The menu is somewhat extensive and we were indecisive, our waiter helped us find a few selections that we must try. We opted for more of the Italian experience over steaks. Bourbon selection was fantastic - I opted for a pour of their Weller 107 barrel pick, which was ridiculously good. Apps we tried: -Arancini were delicious but not sure if I'd order again as we had so much to eat and the other apps were the best -Focaccia bread and ricotta is a must order. -Meatballs were some of the best I've ever had. Also a must order. Very hearty and zesty. Mains: -Chicken Parmesan - huge cut of chicken, we split this and ordered 2 separate pastas. I believe this also came with a small side of the spicy rigatoni which was to die for. -Spaghettini & meatballs - usually I don't order this but after having the meatballs appetizer I had to have more. The pasta was so good and is comparable to the feel of pasta you might get in Italy. -Cacio E Pepe - my wife ordered this, looked great. She also complimented that the pasta was premium quality and handmade. Overall a fantastic night. The layout of the restaurant is amazing with fantastic views over the river. Gibsons Italia is a must visit for anyone who comes to Chicago.

Decided to celebrate a special occasion with my boyfriend
Decided to celebrate a special occasion with my boyfriend and called to see if it would be possible to get us a spot by the window; they said they would certainly do their best, but couldn't guarantee anything. We went a little earlier for dinner on a Thursday so I thought we might have some luck, but you never know. Gibsons hooked us up. We got a window table and the views were just absolutely spectacular. The service (both from waitstaff and management) was great. I didn't want to take a prime table for too long but was told to take our time and enjoy the view, which was appreciated. Immediately were checked on when sun was shining a bit brightly off a building for a brief period. Little things that added up. We got a lot of classics like branzino, potato purée ("butter, butter, butter" as its description on the menu was a bit of a selling point), and risotto with scallops. Loved everything, and the dessert (banana gelato) was a fun surprise. Thank you for making a special night infinitely more special!
First time here and the vibe, the drinks and the food are
First time here and the vibe, the drinks and the food are spot on! Taylor, our bartender on the second floor, was absolutely amazing. Great recommendations for both food and drink along with great conversation. We had the King crab, the meatballs and the steak tartare! All three excellent choices. The smokiness of the tartare and the texture - hands down probably the best I've had!
Top Notch
Top Notch in every aspect. We were a party of 15 - from steaks to fish to pasta, cocktails, service, view and ambience — perfect. Highly recommend the petite filet and salmon dishes. Tiramisu and Banana Gelato were delish - only wish they offered the same HUGE wedge of chocolate cake that Gibson’s Steak House offers. We were celebrating a 90th and a 22nd birthday - and Team Gibson’s made it memorable. Thank you!
I heard great things about this restaurant so I had high
I heard great things about this restaurant so I had high expectation. We started off with the meatball and bread with honey ricotta and balsamic. They were both really good. We also go the steak which was one of my favorites. As well as a pasta dish and some sides. Service was good and loved the environment and view.
Everything was delicious.
The view is beautiful, especially if you get to sit by the windows. Everyone is always so friendly. Book in advance!
I'd never been to this location until I was invited to a
I'd never been to this location until I was invited to a luncheon here, on the rooftop, which is an indoor room on the 4th floor with its own bar and restroom. It was very nice, with a gorgeous view of the river (which is straight across from my office.) We were treated to champagne and appetizers, before being treated to more appetizers which I don't know the names of and our choice of entree from a prix fixe menu. The standouts for me were the lobster skewers and the chicken Caesar salad I had. Several colleagues had the filet mignon sliders which were big! The buns were a lot of bread but they did look good and definitely filling. They brought bowls of fries to each table too and those were great! We had wine and coffee with dessert, which was a tray of cannolis and ramekins of yummy tiramisu! While this event was private and different than a usual dining experience, the food was so good that I would love to return for dinner sometime.
Would definitely come back for a nice dinner if we visit
Would definitely come back for a nice dinner if we visit again. I didn't snap a photo of the view but this place is right on the water and has a gorgeous view of the city. The food was all so amazing. Steaks were cooked perfectly and came with a whole roasted garlic on the side. Drinks were incredible. Of course we got dessert. I got banana gelato which came in an Oreo crust and my husband ordered pistachio gelato. I think that was the best pistachio gelato we've had. We've been spoiled now - hope to find some as good back home. Our server was very attentive and professional. Also gave us some great recs for the next time we visit. Hope to come back in the future.

Gibson Italia ATE!!! The Carrara 640 wagyu melted in my mouth, the brussel sprouts were a perfect pair and sweet and spicy and that twice baked ricotta potato was delicious! The service was hands down the best part. Our server Conner was knowledgeable, attentive, and the sweetest guy ever. The ambiance was top tier for a gyrl who loves all the finer things. I loved it here and will definitely be back.
Loved the ambiance and gorgeous view of the river, downtown.
Food was superb especially loved the rigatoni and steak. The service was top notch.
Great dining experience if you're looking for a 5 star
Great dining experience if you're looking for a 5 star upscale restaurant. I've been here a dozen times because I work in the building so we're here for business/client lunches all the time and I like to come with my peeps when we're looking for a nice downtown dinner spot. Food is always outstanding. My favorites are the chicken parmigiana, they give you this huge piece of chicken with a bone in it and with the cheese melted perfectly, the portion is so huge and it comes with a side of pasta. I love their lobster bisque soup, their Caesar salad, their octopus, their cacio Pepe pasta and their salmon. All excellent dishes. Service is always A plus, great vibe with beautiful views of downtown and overlooking the Chicago River. There is valet parking and also street meter parking. Can't go wrong here for lunch, dinner or just popping in for a cocktail.
We were visiting the area of Chicago and came in for
We were visiting the area of Chicago and came in for dinner, our experience was great from start to finish.. from a host greeting you at the entrance, took our coats and stored them for us, then guided us to the elevator to the dining room.. we were greated by the Manager, Hugo Gonzalez who was very attentive and made sure all needs were being met. Our server, Billy was exceptionally amazing, he went above and beyond. The food was delicious and the prices are very reasonable Drinks and desserts, Amazing also.. if you're in the downtown area this is a place to try.

My wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary at Gibsons Italia. I politely requested a table with a nice view ahead of time. They gave us one of the best tables in the house! Amazing view. Food and service were off the charts good. Very thankful they helped make the evening so special for us.
Can't recommend this place enough.
Went here to celebrate my anniversary with my girlfriend and had a phenomenal experience, from waiting from our table to be ready to cashing out. Great views in the dining room. The food was unbelievably good -- the wagyu tartare, the Chicago cut, and the spicy rigatoni were mind blowing. The highlight of our experience was our server Caitlin, who pulled out all the stops to make sure that we had a great experience. Don't get me wrong, the food was amazing, but the service put this place over the top. Can't recommend it enough.
Great grilled octopus and branzino! But it's loud.
Nice views of the city and the food was good—the grilled octopus appetizer was outstanding, and the branzino was cooked perfectly (Brussels sprouts sides were a little over-charred but still good). The only downside was it was a little loud.
Recommended by a friend as number 1 in downtown and he was correct
We were in Chicago for the weekend looking for a location for a high quality meal. A friend who lives in Chicago recommended this location by far and away his number 1 in the city. We walked in on a rainy Saturday afternoon for lunch with no reservation and got seated at the bar. We enjoyed cocktails, shared a seafood tower for two and shared a pasta dish. The bar tender was super friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu, she made great drinks, and gave us great recommendations for dinner that night. We would have loved to do dinner, but you have to book way ahead to get a table - but if planning a trip to Chicago you should book ahead as this location is exceptional.
Wonderful leisurely lunch!
We sat at the bar for a leisurely lunch yesterday. Service was great, chatted with the bartender who was lovely, informative about the food and wine and gave us great tips on other restaurants and bars. Both the food and wine were excellent. We shared a fish platter with lobster, oysters, snow crabs and shrimp. It was wonderful! Then we shared the mafaldine with a meat sauce. Amazing! We wanted to go in the evening but couldn’t get a table so we decided to go for lunch. So glad we did!
top chicago restaurant
had reservation wanted main dining room, but they running late so we sat in bar in area (felt like a bait and switch), but bar area is nice too. great menu, nice service, hip and trendy vibe. food was very good: pasta delicious, steak high quality, Original gibsons has a bit more magic since that is an institution, but this will get there.
Would definitely return here👍
Most impressive on every level! Started on the second floor for cocktails, which were amazing. They have a sommelier in the lounge area ready to help, too. Once in the restaurant, food and service were incomparable. Wine list super with another knowledgeable sommelier. And don’t forget the view of the Chicago river.
Great ambience, service, food: staggering wide-angle views.
Came here after the laughably awful Dutchman at the Lyric nearby. Welcomed successively by car valet, doorman, receptionists, and maitre d' on the sumptuous third floor. Seated at a booth in back of the room with distractingly good, wide light-show views NE over river/city/traffic/trains. Food faultlessly good including: lobster cocktails, beet salads, grilled fresh branzino, and veal chop Milanese, with side order brussels and grilled asparagus were all of highest quality. Charming head waiter even knew how to fix sgroppinos for dessert (as we had been talking about Venice for some reason). Anyway - another fantastic Gibson dining room. Thanks so much guys.
Fantastic Experience
Great food, great service, and great views of downtown Chicago. My wife and I went here with my sister and her husband and had a booth facing the Chicago skyline. We shared the focaccia, risotto and octopus antipasti. I especially recommend the charred octopus. The filet mignon with bearnaise sauce was excellent.
Amazing dinner with a killer view.
Loved it. First father and son trip to the Windy City. The view, staff, and food were all superb. The wagyu tartare was the star of the show, but it was all delicious. We could have sat there all night admiring the veiw, and we did not feel rushed a bit. I can't wait to take my wife back for a romantic dinner.
