Their Pad Thai is so great, especially grilled prawn.
It takes time after you order, but I recommend it.
Be the first to ReplyThe waitress totally ruined our experience.
She was extremely rude to us. We wanted to order the soft serve but she said we were eating slowly and she could not serve us with it. They had a reservation and we would only have 10mins left before the next party arrives. However, they never told us about the reservation at the beginning and she was so impolite. We will never come back to this place and have shared our experience with our friends.
Be the first to ReplyThis is the worst experience I've ever had.
The server was extremely rude and impolite, trying to take out the plates even though we didn't finish the meal yet. When there is still some food left in our plates, she came to us and aggressively told us we have to finish it in 10 mins because another party will come. We agreed to finish the meal asap, while asking if we could have soft served ice cream before we go. The server suddenly became extremely aggressive, accusing us for not able to understand English. Allowed me to quote: "I already explained to you guys that you must finish your meal in 10 mins, but I don't know if you could understand English or not. We have ice cream, but because the way you eat, I am unable to serve the ice cream to you". In conclusion, this is a place where you are not a guest but the server's punching bag. I highly recommend you to try other Thai restaurants and avoid being disgusted by the server.

I recently had a very negative experience due to the poor attitude and behavior of the staff. Our server was extremely rude and unprofessional throughout the entire meal, and it was made worse by their decision to clear our plates before we had even finished eating. Not only was this incredibly disrespectful, but it also made us feel rushed and unwelcome in the restaurant. We had barely taken our last bites when our server swooped in and began snatching up our plates without so much as a word.To make matters worse, when we tried to express our displeasure to the server, they brushed us off and seemed completely unconcerned with our experience. We were so put off by the poor service that we decided to leave the restaurant early, despite having planned on enjoying a relaxing evening there.Overall, I cannot recommend this restaurant due to the terrible service we received. If you're looking for a pleasant dining experience with attentive and respectful staff, I suggest you look elsewhere.

As a vegetarian, I try to simplify it for the server by asking a yes or no question: can they make something without meat/fish? I got a rude answer back from my server who pointed at their vegan sign for their two or three options... and I just gave up and chose one of those. The food itself was good, but I preferred noodles and would've liked to have known if they could've taken out the meat/fishMy friend who got the pad Thai really liked it though! And the ice cream was good too. Also, the place is pretty small so be ready to potentially sit outside.

My friend, her son, my pup and I all stopped by on Wednesday afternoon for lunch on a sunny day. We sat outside and they offered my pup a doggy water bowl which I always appreciate. We got Thai tea, limeade with butterfly pea tea, chicken wings (my favorite!!!), the chicken and rice dish, and the steak with green curry. Nom nom nom!! The steak and curry was cooked to perfection. Overall, great service and lots and lots of flavors. A nicely elevated patio and sitting area. Great for a sunny day like today!!

This is a very small place with some outdoor seating with about 4 or 5 small indoor tables. The menu is not very big. The dishes were on the smaller side but very flavorful. Just a warning the party wings were definitely on the spicier side. Service was good.

The vibe at Funky Elephant is exactly as the name of the restaurant implies! The small interior was colorfully-decorated, the bathroom had strobe disco lights, and the small menu here featured dishes with authentic Thai flavors and housemade curry pastes and sauces. To start, the Crispy Rice Salad (Nam Kao Tod) was made with fried Jasmine rice balls mixed with red curry paste, herbs, peanuts, lime, chilies, fish sauce, and fermented pork, and the crispy rice had a deliciously funky, salty, sour flavor contrasted by the fresh lettuce and herbs served on the side. The Hella Drunken Mussels was a bowl of Prince Edward Island mussels in a dark spiced broth made with chili jam, Thai basil, Thai chili, and rice wine, and the flavors of the broth were searingly hot, spicy, and savory. For our mains, the Pad Thai Old Skool was a classic sweet and sticky stir-fried rice noodle dish made with Hodo tofu, eggs, Chan noodles, tamarind sauce, and fish sauce, topped with two huge shell-on shrimp, and served with bean sprouts and crushed peanuts on the side. The Vermicelli Curry (Kanom Jean) was a Northern Thai dish made with rice noodles in a red curry broth and topped with boneless slices of tender, meaty rock cod. The K.M.G. #2 (Kao Mun Gai) came with a portion of flavorful GG (ginger garlic) Rice, topped with tender slices of boneless poached chicken thigh, served with a fermented soy bean sauce and chicken broth on the side. My favorite dish (though not by far) was the Gang Rawang Beef, made with grilled flat iron steak served in a green coconut milk curry sauce, along with arugula and a bowl of blue Butterfly Pea Jasmine Rice on the side. The juicy grilled steak was served rare and had a pleasantly chewy texture, but my favorite part was the creamy curry sauce, which went nicely with the rice on the side. Overall, the food here made for a delicious meal featuring authentic Thai flavors and fresh ingredients, and the vibe was funky and unique!

The food and service was amazing! Cute little place with not a lot of seating inside. We got the fried brussels sprouts which were super delicious. We also got the pad thai and vermicelli curry, and both were also super tasty! Pad Thai was spicy but was a good amount of spice. The Thai tea here is also really yummy. Definitely one of my favorite Thai places in the area & will definitely come back!
Be the first to ReplyRude staff that can't follow simple directions.
Poor value.
Be the first to ReplyThe nam khao is SO GOOD.
The staff is friendly, and the ambiance is really nice. We stopped by for a last minute dinner, and ate outdoors. Really a delight.
Be the first to ReplyPoor attitude and bad behavior.
I came by for lunch today. I saw the server pick up the ice cube with her hand and place it in the cup. That was my friend's drink! We later needed a fork to share the dish, but there was no one in front of us. So I get a fork. The server approached me and told me flatly that I should not touch the fork area. I just asked how customers get assistants if there is no one in the front. The server then aggressively sprayed some sort of liquid on all forks and knives. I'm wondering who dared to use those tablewares after seeing an unknown liquid sprayed on them and without rinsing them
Be the first to ReplyA lot of hype and great reviews brought me here.
The food was atrociously bad, and made me sick. Won't be back.

If you are a fan of a Thai cuisine and dishes with an emphasis on fish sauce, this restaurant is the place for you. We ordered the crispy rice salad (spicy) and pad thai (spicy). The crispy rice salad was a great starter. It was surprisingly spicy and definitely gave the dish an extra kick. If you can't handle spicy, maybe ask for less spice on this dish. Otherwise, it was very flavorful. The pad thai was the best pad thai I've ever had in the Bay. It comes with two grilled prawns. The noodles are on the more saucier/wetter side which makes the texture/feel much more enjoyable rather than if the noodles were dry. It has a good balance of sweetness and fish sauce. We will definitely be coming back again.
Be the first to ReplyI will never come here again.
I was absolutely appalled by the rude, horrible, harassing attitude of the waitress. What a dump. There are sooooo many wonderful Thai restaurants around. In the future, I'll go to one of those. SO disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyOh my God, what a mistake to eat here.
It was an absolutely miserable experience. The food: I ordered the Pad Thai and was extremely disappointed at $18.00 for 2 shrimps and a glob of noodles that had a weird strange taste. Totally felt ripped off. I could not fathom the great reviews of the food. It was like an alternate universe. My son had the Wholesome Noodles a soupy noodle dish with an egg or two. I could tell he did not like it either. $16.00.The waitress: She definitely needs to go to charm school. What happened to being gracious. She was very Rude and I totally agree with the other reviews about her rudeness. She was busy with customers so I took a paper napkin from the table next to me about 12-24 inches away and she shamed me for doing so. Tip 0 nada. I know it is hard running a restaurant but get another job. If she is not the owner she should be fired. We will never go back and I have already told several people about my horrible experience. I tried to use my gift card from Comcast and she rudely said restaurants do not take gift cards. She was also upset and rude I did not leave a tip. So excuse me. I looked up rudeness in the dictionary and it said an example of rudeness is: the waitress at Funky Elephant!
Be the first to ReplyI used to love this place so much.
They have flavorful Thai street food that you can rarely find in any other places. The owner and staff were all exceedingly friendly and brought us a delightful experience. However, the waitress today simply ruined all my good memories with this place. She is rude, unprofessional and RACIST. She didn't bring us water when we were seated, and I thought it was okay at first. But then the attitude she gave to us really makes me wonder "what's going on?". She kept closing the plates while we were still eating (asked us 3 times "are you done with it"). She brought us the check in the middle of our dinner without us asking for it, asked "are you done with the check" after 3 minutes by interrupting us, and took the signed check right away when we are still seated. What makes me really feel offended - she was super nice to the table next to us, she spent tons of time introducing food to that table and she seemed to be fine leaving the tipped check on that table while they were still chatting. That really surprised me - "wow she actually knows how to serve". The service ruined the food, the good outdoor vibe and everything. My sincere suggestion to the owner: FIRE this employee to save this hidden gem. (oh btw she literally said "I'm just an employee" when we complained about the service). I feel so sad seeing the place that we've been so many times no longer has a friendly vibe.

One of the best pad thai Ive ever tasted! our foodie friends recommended this place to us and it didnt disappoint! the place is pretty unique, with outdoor seats and tables like in Asia. We ordered the chicken wings, papaya salad, pad thai, and steak curry. Portions were a bit small so kinda on the pricey side. But the taste was so good! I really liked the pad thai and chicken wings. Next time we want to try other dishes too especially the brussel sprouts, we heard that they are amazing.
Be the first to ReplyThe nam khao was actually crispy.
So many places overcook their nam khao but this place did it just right The beef is super tender and served with a green curry and coconut milk that makes the flavors popThe pad thai served with gulf white shrimps that were so dang good it almost reminded me of crab
Be the first to ReplyFirst time and I loved the friendly staff.
In addition the was good. I love Thai food, especially when it's prepared correctly. Food & drinks were good. I would go again.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing amazing amazing.
Very strong flavors, authentic Thai dishes along side some newer fusion style ones. The lady at the front put down Brussels instead of the tofu we had ordered but it was also delicious, but redundant as my mom and bf and I just had sprouts the day before. Would highly recommend allll the dishes we tried, which was basically almost everything on the menu haha.
Be the first to ReplyThis is one of my favorite Thai restaurants to go to.
The food is amazing and it's quality work. I order just about every on the menu and never regret it. They have an octopus salad special right now and it's delicious. I recommend just about everything in the menu. Most items are spicy.
Be the first to ReplyThis is some of the best food I've ever had.
My partner and I moved to Berkeley almost a year ago, and we've been trying as many of the recommended restaurants in the area as we can. This is by far the best one we've been to. Couldn't recommend Funky Elephant more. We ordered many dishes and all of them we're incredible. Make sure to ask for spicy on the side if you're new to the restaurant!

Foods are good but they never change/refine their menu for years. Also some of people working there are really rude. They are meddlesome and wiredly cautious about where we put the tap water bottle. "You need to put the bottle in the middle of the table!" Why the bottle cannot be put by the side? So wired......They assume themselves running a fine dining place and ask us to pay higher tips directly ( we have already put 20% in)They just reprint the receipt and ask us to refill it. I have been there pretty often before, but IDK what change the friendly vibe overthere... very arrogant now.... Giving me a feeling that I am begging them to sell me their noodle...

I would highly recommend the pad Thai as it is spicy and delicious with the jumbo shrimp. My personal favorite is the mussels, with sticky rice in the side to dip in the sauce. The mussels sauce is sweet, spicy, savory, and sour. The hallmark of Thai and Southeast Asian cuisine, the balance of flavors in that dish is unmatched, probably one of the top 3 mussel dishes I've ever had. KMG and Party wings are delicious too. All in all I would say you can't go wrong with anything you order here but for sure the #1 thing I would recommend is the Druken Mussels!
