We first came here for the first time in September last year. At the time, the fugu season had just started and when we tried to book, we were told that the restaurant was not sure if it could take our reservation since they were not sure if they could source the fish. A couple of days later, they contacted us and said they could take our reservation.
When we eventually dined at the restaurant, we found that it is a small cosy restaurant run by a couple and their daughter. The wife is actually Chinese from Shanghai but she has been living in Japan for over 30 years. She explained to us that her husband is the second generation owner of the restaurant and that they specialise in serving a type of wild-caught fugu called Tora Fugu. It's supposed to be one of the best, if not the best type of fugu. We loved the meal which commenced with fugu sashimi and fugu jelly, proceeded to grilled fugu (the various parts have different textures and provide an interesting contrast), then deep fried fugu (almost like fried chicken but much better) and then concluded with a fugu nabe in which a delicious congee ending the meal was prepared.
On this occasion, similar dishes to those described above were served. However, the highlight was the massive Fugu Shirako (smelt) which is now in season. We had that firstly as fugu shirako sashimi, then as part of the sauce for dipping the fugu sashimi and then grilled.
We loved the meal and will most certainly come back again. If you like fugu, this is the place to be. And if you have not tried fugu, come here and try it. It will be an educational experience.
