Meh
A big menu, so that was nice, but of my food, and the two other things I tasted, it was very average - which was a letdown after a cool menu. The drinks menu pretty small. The interior is very cool, although the table was a bit squished. Staff was nice enough - but Id venture elsewhere
Be the first to ReplyBest Mexican Meal in the Midwest
During a previous trip to Chicago my spouse and I had the pleasure of getting a meal to go from Frontera Grill. The food was so good then that we knew we had to come back during our most recent trip to Chicago, and honestly in-person it was one of the best meals I've had. Not only were the appetizer salsas and drinks delicious, the melas fresh and flavorful, but the service at Frontera is top notch. They are quick, efficient, and polite. 100% we will be back on our next trip.
Be the first to ReplyLittle brother to Michelin Star restaurant upstairs with same James Beard winning chef and a comfort menu to please!
Frontera Grill is one of two restaurants operated in the same building on N. Clark St. by James Beard winning chef Rick Bayless. Itโs big brother and Michelin Star sibling is upstairs - Topolbampo. But Frontera is great! Book well in advance (RESY). We had Tamal appetizer, mushroom tacos and the Carne Asada. All outstanding. The fried plantains with the Carne Asada were especially great. Also the chipotle sauce was fantqstic. Great Lovely atmosphere of people just there to enjoy and have fun. Couples on dates to impress. And desert - if you have room - is worth it. We had the Tres Leches cake with banana ice cream. Going to be eating light for a few days to compensate but it was definitely worth it.
Be the first to ReplyAlways reliable. Great service. Great food.
This is our go-to place when we need to have a meal, donโt want to make a fuss, and want to be given great options. We always have a good meal here and the service is always top notch. On a cold winter night the tortilla soup hits the spotโฆI donโt know what is in that broth but it is delicious. The Pozole is excellent as well. If I had a choice Iโd go for dinner or lunch rather than brunch. Donโt know what else to say: Go!
Be the first to ReplyFlavorful Mexican Feast
Had an awesome time at Frontera Grill! The Mexican food was packed with flavor and satisfied my craving for authentic dishes. From the zesty tacos to the mouthwatering guacamole, every bite was a taste sensation. The laid-back atmosphere and friendly service added to the enjoyment. If you're into tasty Mexican fare without the fuss, this spot is a winner. Definitely going back for more flavorful fiestas!
Be the first to ReplyAdequate and disappointing
My wife and I have gone to Frontera Grill several times and Topolo once, but these were several years ago before we moved away. We have great admiration for Rick Bayless and were excited to go for a very special occasion dinner. The experience was mixed, but overall a big disappointment given our expectation. Our service was professional, but not warm. The Corunda Michoacana appetizer was excellent, a little spice, some sweetness, and complex flavors. For dinner I had the specialty Cochinita Pibil. The pork was intender and the flavors were good. Probably a 4-4.5 rating. She ordered the trout and was disappointed. While trout should be tender, this seemed overcooked with some mushiness. And it was visually not attractive. Most confounding were the Margaritas. We have his recipes and they make great margaritas. The Topolo we ordered was extremely sweet and the server said that was just the way they were. The Blue Agave marg was better, but very sour. I asked about getting a Grand Marnier shot to sweeten it and that would have been $11. These were drinks were very disappointing. So while the entire experience was adequate, this visit definitely ended our longing desire to eat there again.

We come every year when we visit Chicago. This year was for brunch. Breakfast enchiladas and Puebla style (mole) enchiladas for the win. And a mezcal cocktail for me :)
Be the first to ReplyHighly Recommend the Champagne Margarita
We stopped in on a Friday evening as we had extra time before our dinner reservations. We lucked out and got the last two spots at the bar (in front of the amazing artwork/decor). Gerry was a great bartender talking me into getting the Champagne Margarita. It was refreshing and the bubbles definitely adding to the cocktail. My husband got the Blue Agave margarita which was also very good.
Be the first to ReplyDon't order the "suckling pig" (aka chicken)
I was really looking forward to the Lechon, slow-cooked suckling pig in guajillo barbecue sauce) and at $35, it really should have been good. Unfortunately, it tasted like chicken and I seriously suspect it was. I have had suckling pig before and it is very tender and usually served with the skin. This meat had no fat and little taste. The dish was also drowned in barbecue sauce making it even harder to detect any of the taste that was left. I think I only ate about 1/3 of it. When I asked the server to confirm this was the correct dish, she said it was and asked if I did not like it. She made some statement about "can I get you something else?" but this made no sense, as I was not going to send this back and waste $35 for nothing, only to wait longer and pay more for something else I might not like. I then just asked her to bring me some salt, to which she stated "certainly!" and then NEVER DID!!!! A manager came over to ask about the dish and I told her I already talked to someone else about it. Eventually I had to ask a runner for salt and he told our server who only then brought it. Also, generally a $107 bill for lunch for 2, for 4 total items is a bit crazy. The Topo Margarita was good, therefore I will give this review 2 stars instead of 1. To put into perspective how disappointing this lunch was, I spent $700 at Topolobampo the night before and I did NOT think that was overpriced. But $107 for the lunch I just had at Frontera was robbery. It is clear to me that this establishment has gone downhill. For a place with such a great reputation, they fell WAY too short on quality as well as service for me to give them another chance.
Be the first to ReplySo glad to have retuned
From the moment we sat down and ordered our Topolo margaritas through the entire fabulous dinner. We couldnโt have enjoyed it more. The guacamole with avocados grown just for the Frontera group in Michoacan Mexico was heavenly as were the delicious corn chips served along side of it. The tamale soup with melted cheese and grilled chicken was as enticing as we remembered it from previous visits. The entrรฉes were superb, and the service was great.
Be the first to ReplyGreat foos and drinks
Visited for lunch on our last trip to Chicago. This time we booked reservations for dinner. Food and drinks continue to be outstanding. The only minor complaint was that the tortilla chips were a bit over salted but otherwise still excellent.
Be the first to ReplyFlavors on point
Started with a Fortaleza margarita, One of the best margaritas I have ever had. Chips and salsa were solid. Salsas were wonderful. Chips a bit salty. Had the steak tacos as the appetizer even though they were on the main menu. Cooked to perfection and seasoned wonderfully. Then had the diablo shrimp. the heat was there but not over powering of the other flavors that were present. A very well done dish. Finished with the mexican ice cream. Very good. A wonderful meal and could be one of the best mexican places I have ever been to in the US. Wait staff was wonderful as well.
Be the first to ReplyRick Bayless restaurant not what it used to be.
This is a hard review to write, I have been a Rick Bayless fan for many many years. We have had multiple outstanding meals at Topolobampo, but that was pre-Covid. Last night we went to Frontera and had the worst service we have had at any restaurant in a long time in Chicago. We were seated and the busboy brought us water right away, we read the menus and decided what to order and then waited and waited and waited. After we had been seated for about 20 minutes a server walked past hollering from a far that he would be with us soon. He went on to visit multiple other tables and then another 5-10 minutes went by and again he past us hollering from a far that he would be with us soon. More time and still nothing. Finally a host came out and asked if we had ordered anything, not how things were. We managed to order drinks and that seemed to be all she wanted to do for us but before she could get away we got an appetizer ordered. Drinks did come fast but not shaken table side as stated in the menu and we could see drinks were being shaken table side for other surrounding tables, so this wasnโt a Covid change or staffing issue. Appetizer also came quickly and then we waited more. Finally a guy came by, but not the one who had been hollering at us and seemed to be assigned to our table, and took our entree order. That food again came out fairly quickly. Food was ok, not bad, but not amazing anymore. No one ever stopped by and checked in or asked if we wanted another drink and we would have ordered more. A busboy took our plates, those guys were on top of things, and then we waited some more. Finally the host that had taken our drink order came back out and asked in a fairly gruff manor if we were ok. I simply asked her, I think a bit to her surprise, if we had done anything to piss the staff off. She didnโt ask why or what was wrong but just said is this about the bill taking time. We let her know that staff had avoided us like we had the plague and never came by to check in and we had waited and waited all evening. She did offer to pick up the bill which we werenโt angling for but she also didnโt really apologize. We told her we would pay and she offered a round of drinks and at that point we didnโt really want to stay any longer. Bill came and our one round of drinks had been comped and the 20% service fee was eliminated, but really all we wanted was a sincere apology. There was staff galore, so this wasnโt a Covid staffing issue. We saw managers and servers fawning over other tables. The 20% service fee that is now included on bills looks to have created an environment where staff doesnโt really feel the need to work hard or be kind to all guests as they will get their money either way.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food. Great service. Small portions.
Had the Carne Asada al Guajillo and both the meat and the sauce were amazing. One of the best meals I've ever had. My only complaint is that the serving size is so small. Others in a our group loved their food too.
Be the first to ReplyNoisy and slow service
This place gets great reviews and has won a lot of awards, but our experience has so-so. It's very noisy and the service is very slow. One of the dishes we had was way too salty. There are better places to go at this price point.
Be the first to ReplyA Great Taste of Mexico
I have wanted to try a Rick Bayless restaurant for some time, finally got to Chicago and tried Frontera Grill. We began with delicious margaritas and a shared sopecitos rancheros. They are mini corn masa boats filled with pulled beef, sauce, cheese and avocado. Many layers of flavor made these delicious. Entrees were the carne asada and the crispy duck carnitas. The duck was perfectly crispy and served with mini soft tacos, black beans, salsa and guacamole. Everything was done well and I would rate Frontera Grill as one of the best Mexican restaurants I have dined in.
Be the first to ReplyRick Baylessโ restaurant show his creative and innovative side!
We sat outside on a lovely evening! Our appetizers were amazing! Flavourful and delicious! We had the 3 ceviches ! One had shrimp and scallops , the next ahi tuna and the last salmon! So amazing! We also ordered the guacamole that came with homemade fried tortilla chips! Both my daughter and I are on a keto diet but we just couldnโt resist and ate the chips! We should have stopped there but we went on to order mains! I had the grilled salmon with raw peanuts in a bright orange sauce made of chilies with green beans! I skipped the rice as I was already ruining my diet! The dish was very flavourful ! My daughter had the skirt steak with the masa tamale- our favourite with the cream on top! To die for! My husband had shrimp with rice! He like it but he also managed to top his dinner off with an apple crepe and Ice cream that had a liqueur in it! Oh and a beautiful looking cappuccino! Great food! I canโt wait to return !
Be the first to ReplyThe best Mexican food we've ever had!
My husband and I both agreed this was the best Mexican food we ever had. I did not know at the time it was a Rick Bayless restaurant (hubs did, that is why he made the res). When I found out I was like, no wonder! I had pollo en pipian verde, and the hubs had steak tacos al pastor. Both were amazing. Can't say enough about this place.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Rick Bayless Restaurant
A Rick Bayless, James Beard awarded restaurant serving Mexican inspired cuisine. Had the ceviche, baja fish, and taco carnitas. All excellent. Great service by Aaron B.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food & excellent service
The decor and vibe of the restaurant is fun, colourful, artistic and authentic to Mexican culture. Food was delicious and flavourful with large portions. The staff were extremely friendly and polite and the service was very fast. Amazing service from Wilson and Norma who were both a pleasure to talk to and to be served by. Many thanks from us all from London for making our experience visiting Chicago that much more joyful :)
Be the first to ReplyNOISY BEYOND BELIEF!
If your idea of a relaxing evening out is enjoying creative, first-rate Mexican fare in an sonically abusive environment where you have to yell to make yourself understood to your dining companions this is the place for you.
What a shame Rick Bayless has bought into an animal house environment for his cuisine. We wonโt be back. When commented upon as we departed staff were polite but extremely clear: โwe are under strict orders to keep the music loud for a very exciting vibe, very Mexico City!โ Privately one pulled us aside to confess: โItโs nice and quiet outside. We all look forward to being there ourselves. I will pass your comment up the ladder.โ
The most telling and damning aspect is that there was a three-minute pause in the canned music, presumably for some technical reason. Everyone quit screaming and it was perfectly acceptable and pleasant. Until it wasnโt again. Adios!
best mexican food
loved the chilled out vibe and friendly service, excellent menu for vegetarians, definitely the best enchilada and beans
special mention to the veg tamales also
do try the beer cocktail
and of course margaritas too
overall a must do if in the windy city
Goldbelly Frontera grill meal for 2
Chicken Mole for 2 people. This was prepared by Frontera grill and home delivered by Goldbelly. It was expensive ($119), and had one piece of chicken rather than the advertised two pieces. (After some proding, Goldbelly agreed to refund $15 to my son and his wife who had ordered it as a present for us. We'll see if that happens.) The one piece of chicken with mole sauce was fine, but the rest of the meal was virtually inedible. The string beans were raw. The soup had so much salt in it even I (and I tend to like salty food) couldn't eat it.
Be the first to ReplyJust OK
I heard this restaurant had won an award for best Mexican restaurant in Illinois a few years ago so had to try it. The salsas were amazing. The main courses were just ok. Wouldโve liked more food for the price. And wish you didnโt have to pay for chips and salsa.

We have been trying to get back to Frontera for some time, as we do not live in the area. We were successful on our past trip to Chicago. Fontera is still as good as we remembered, from the excellent service to the margaritas and lastly to some of the more unique items on the menu. The Mahi-Mahi dish did not disappoint
