Came in with a reservation on a saturday with 5 people.
The restaurant is tucked away down Freeman's alley and is cozy inside. The trains were out of whack and half our party was very late, but they were excellent and accommodating! We had the english breakfast plate, the housemadr granola bowl, sourdough pancakes, and the kale caesar. All were a good portion and and very tasty. The beans on the english breakfast were particularly tasty, as was the housemade granola. Definitely a cute spot with coming out to!

We felt as though we were in a luxurious mountain resort, with servings of delicious mostly vegetables with enough prime meat to enhance the exquisite morsels. The service was excellent but never intrusive, Must return very soon.....

Always wanted to check this place out but it gets busy on weekends. I had a day off on a Friday so decided to go for a visit. On weekdays they don't have their extensive brunch menu so some of the dishes you'd see on the weekends aren't available on weekdays. However, the Freemans French Toast was available and I got to try it finally. It was thick and super custardy -- might be my favorite French toast in NYC so far! Buuuuuut the real highlight was the Ichijiku Royale cocktail with fig vodka, sobacha tea, sparkling wine, & lemon was amazing -- so refreshing for a cocktail! I need more of that!
Be the first to ReplyReally cool location at the end of an alleyway.
Came for lunch and it was very pleasant. Great burger and fries.
Be the first to ReplySuper cozy place tucked at the end of a graffiti alley.
Standard brunch fare. Food quality was great! The English breakfast was huge and delightful. Unfortunately they didn't have any of their desserts available because something went wrong in the kitchen.
Be the first to ReplyWorth the hype.
One of the most delicious tender flaky trout I've ever eaten. The delicata squash was also truly 5 star. I love the old timey decor & the service with a smile.

My first time and was surprised and impressed. The food is great. My friends are happy with their orders. Will definitely come back.

Came here for lunch because we heard that a certain celeb really liked it here... My friend and I ordered to share: devils on Horseback (bacon-wrapped prunes with blue cheese- truly delightful and delicious), artichoke dip (ample-sized crock with basically an entire loaf of sliced bread- couldn't finish it all), and a chicken club with a side salad (basic, but excellent aioli). The decor of Freeman's is very colonial and woodsy. There are taxidermied animals on the walls and antique paintings. The restaurant feels like an old colonial lodge/home with different cozy rooms. There are small doors under the stairs that waiters must fold themselves in half to enter/exit (it was so intriguing). The vibe of this restaurant is in complete juxtaposition to the eclectic and urban artistry of the alleyway where the entrance is located.

Great drinks and atmosphere, unique decor might delight or upset some, solid place for early afternoon activities in an area that does not open up until after 5pm
Be the first to ReplyI love it here.
I walked my man down here, down the alley after over a decade. The food is mid. The ambience is perfect. I gave a sweet man who never knew the idea of my crazy nights from the early 2000s.

Like a review below stated, go for the ambiance not the food. I went last night and had been wanting to go for awhile now. The food was lacking in every single way. Descriptions on the menu would be helpful as well. I'm a pescatarian who eats eggs & cheese. How am I supposed to know what Devils on Horseback are? I would assume deviled eggs. Glad I asked my nasty waitress. I had to send back the greens I ordered because I ordered the radicchio endive salad and the burrata for my friend and I as starters. I ordered roasted wild mushrooms and greens from the bottom of the menu thinking it was cooked greens because it was amongst things cooked and it didn't say: salad and wasn't under the salad menu. One would think my waitress would have been intuitive enough to say hey: That's another salad. Did you really want another salad? Instead of her being annoyed with me when I sent it back because I already had a salad and was expecting cooked greens. My waitress was awful as well. She was rude, curt and short with me and my guest but cheers I still tipped you 20% on the $118 tab. Honestly, I should have just stayed at home or gone somewhere else. The food looks amazing from the website photos. It's not. I also expect to be treated better.

I said I would not come back, but proximity and convenience pulled me back. I updated this from three stars to four stars because the food was the same, but the drinks were better, and service from Jim (please give props to Jim) was quite good. I had the Blood & Honey (tequila, vermouth, blood orange, grapefruit, absinthe, cucumber, lemon, Aleppo honey) was super tart, crisp, and refreshing. I also had the Freeman's cocktail, which was subtle, smooth, comforting. It had rye, pomegranate, lemon, and orange bitters. I'm not a whiskey/rye person, but this was quite good, and was Jim's suggestion. This is still not my favorite place, but Jim's great service necessitates another star.
Be the first to ReplyWent for brunch, great secret restaurant down an alley way.
Historical restaurant great decor. Food was great large portions. Staff was very nice. Nice cozy spot perfect in a nice chilly day.
Be the first to ReplyThat French toast though! It was delicious.
It's a really cool spot, tucked away down Freeman Alley. I loved the feeling of home this place offers, especially on a cold day like today. The food came fast considering how busy they were. I will definitely add this place to the rotation of spots in the city.
Be the first to ReplyI have been here many times but this trip left me lacking.
The food was Ok. Did not seem as good as usual and the service was not very good. It felt like a rushed, lack luster experience over all.
Be the first to ReplyCame here for an early dinner with a friend.
The restaurant is very pretty, with great vibes for hanging out with friends or date night! They have a nice cocktail list - I had the 3 day martini, which consists of gin that sits in olive oil for 3 days, but I didn't get a lot of olive oil flavor in it. It was still a very good martini, just not as olive-y as I would have expected. My friend had the burrata toast and was very happy with her choice - it had a whole large burrata, which she really enjoyed! I was a bit hungrier, so went with the Amish chicken breast with sweet potato. It was very good, loved the little beans that were part of the dish. The service was great - I never felt rushed to order or to finish our meal.

This restaurant is in a fantastically redone house at the end of an ally in the Bowery. You walk through a warren of different dining rooms that look like... dining rooms--with overstuffed chairs, fireplaces... it's like you've gone through a time portal straight into a house from Gangs of New York. It was one of the coziest restaurants I have ever been in. Which is why the food was a bit disappointing. It wasn't bad, it just didn't live up to the incredible setting. I mean, hot artichoke dip with crisp bread is hard to fuck up, but it's more like hangover food than special-night-out-gonna-get-lucky food. That is to say, its heavy and filling and forgettable. There was a duck, there was a fish--branzino, I think. There was a burger. Was there a bread pudding? I can't remember. They were all edible. I mean, would I go there again? Sure--you could probably still get lucky there just from the ambiance, and in spite of the unremarkable food.
Be the first to ReplyCame in right when they opened and got sat right away.
Cool interior. English breakfast was good. Chicken and waffles were okay - wasn't a huge fan of the chipotle honey but I appreciate the attempt to mix it up.Service was friendly, food came out quick.

Down a (well lit) and well-decorated alley lies this gem, which opened in 2004. Food and cocktails were incredible, but be wary if you sit at the bar near the door - it does get chilly when people are consistently exiting/entering.

Went with a visiting friend for brunch! Rustic cute spot hidden gem in an alleyway. While I waited for my friend, I was able to sit by the bar, great service.I ordered the berry waffles (8/10) and it was delicious! Classic brunch item but Freeman's made it special with their strawberry butter! Waffles were light she fluffy and had a generous amount of berries. Maple syrup just tied it altogether. My friend ordered the fried chicken and waffles (8/10). Very filling, friend didn't like the veggies on top. Overall typical brunch spot with traditional dishes, didn't exactly wow me. Cute gesture of service, the waiter gave my friend and I a postcard so that we can write our departing messages to each other!

Their artichoke dip is so delicious! Any of the cocktails are just perfectly balanced. We had Edgar as our bartender and he is super, super helpful and friendly, his recommendations were on point. Even the night was crowded, he was timely dropped! Five Cheese Macaroni so yummy!
Be the first to ReplyMight be a tad difficult for a first-timer to find.
Take just a short walk down the graffiti-covered alley to step inside. Once inside you level the Bowery behind. The atmosphere feels more upstate than city. I was impressed with the level of care and service we received. Tonight we went with the Artichoke dip and Brussels to start. Followed by the steak and salmon for the main. Love the vibe, love the food, appreciate the service.
Be the first to ReplyYou never have a bad meal or time at Freemans.
It feels like the most perfect hidden gem in the city even though everyone knows about it. To say it's a special place is a huge understatement. The food is as delicious and cozy as the atmosphere as are the expertly made drinks. Our last server Alex is probably the nicest server in all of NYC and made our experience even more enjoyable than normal. Love this place! P.S. Bring back the escarole and beans! I loved that dish and it went away :(
Be the first to ReplyWaited 2+ hours for entree.
Food was tepid and really average for the expense. Complained to manager about the crazy wait time and did not even comp a round of drinks. Service is lack-luster and food is average. I really wanted to like this place
Be the first to ReplyGo here.
The drinks are phenomenal. We weren't able to eat brunch or dinner because reservations were very hard to get...... which likely means their food is as good as their craft cocktails. However, we were able to have an appetizer with our cocktails - the devil on horseback stuffed jalapeรฑos are legit!
