HIT IN THE HEAD WITH A WINE BOTTLE I had high expectations

1/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Brandon T. on 07/22/2024

HIT IN THE HEAD WITH A WINE BOTTLE I had high expectations for this restaurant, but my recent experience was nothing short of shocking and embarrassing. Here are the main points of concern: - During dinner, I was hit in the head with a wine bottle by a waiter. The bottle bounced off my head and shattered, causing quite a scene, of significant discomfort and embarrassment. - To my dismay, no manager came to speak with me or offer any form of apology or assistance. - Despite the incident, neither my dinner nor the wine was comped. Instead, I was offered only a $15 piece of cheese, which felt like an insult considering the pain and disruption caused. - Adding to the embarrassment, several waiters made jokes at my expense, further highlighting the lack of professionalism and care. I understand that accidents happen, but the lack of proper handling and empathy in such situations is disappointing. The absence of managerial intervention and the inadequate compensation left me feeling undervalued and disrespected. I hope the management takes this feedback seriously and improves their response to such incidents in the future.

I went to Flour + Water with my date, and it was truly memorable! I ordered the Squid Ink Fusilli, which was bursting with unique flavors and had a delightful hint of spice. The dessert perfectly complemented the pasta; you have to try the chocolate budino--it's light, sweet, and incredibly melt-in-your-mouth smooth! The service was exceptional, making us feel welcomed and well taken care of all night. I highly recommend this place and am already looking forward to dining there again!

The interior was cool and good lighting. Nice table chairs. The menu was absolutely excellent and great options too. The servers were outstanding and friendly. We had the Margherita Pizza, Spring Allium Sacchetti, and Farro Garganelli. Everything was well-cooked and great quality food. The price was reasonable too.

The carbonara pizza was too salty, and we asked to waiter to make the rest the dishes less salty. However, the rest of the dishes are still salty. I had high expectations as the other comments are good, yet we are so disappointed.

The ambiance was nice, service was also pretty good too but for the price, I didn't find the food worth it. I was never a pasta lover in the first place, but I expected better for the price of each dish. While their dishes may be unique, I'll probably stick to my pesto or Alfredo next time if they have it.

Ambiance, food, and service are all on point here.

4/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Josh B. on 06/13/2024

We opted for the pasta tasting menu. The savory cannoli and tuna crudo appetizers were delicious. The tuna crudo had a variety of flavors across the flavor spectrum that were well balanced. Of the entrees, I enjoyed the Squid Ink Corzetti and Grano Arso Cappellacci Dei Briganti. However, all of the offerings were delicious. Olivia, Lucy, Coleman, and the others we interacted with were pleasant and offered excellent service. Thanks for a quality dining experience.

We went for a birthday dinner and got the tasting menu.

3/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Ashley H. on 06/12/2024

The first appetizers ere amazing. And the first oats was good. All the meat filled pastas were the same and the brother one was horrible. The problem is they use the same ingredients in almost all the dishes - fava beans and spring peas and butter and veal. So all the flavors are repetitive for $135 a person. Service is pretty good at first and when they change out plates but they forget when you ask for ice or a straw etc. Ambiance is loud inside and kind of dark as well... not my favorite.

Pasta is one of my favorite foods, and the menu at Flour +

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Wendy T. on 03/18/2024

Pasta is one of my favorite foods, and the menu at Flour + Water was everything I wanted it to be. My only regret is that I didn't discover it sooner. The flavors were fantastic and delicious, while also being complex and interesting. I dislike when fancy places overdo the complexity at the expense of flavor, but this menu did not compromise on flavor. It was truly delicious. Flour + Water located in the Mission, San Francisco Price: $135/person For the quality, amazing flavors and textures, and lovely staff and atmosphere, this tasting menu is absolutely worth the price. I was pleasantly surprised that I wasn't super full after the meal. The pace and portions were perfect such that it felt like a light meal, despite eating what felt like a lot of food. My only tiny nitpicks: I wasn't the biggest fan of the crab pasta breadcrumb texture which reminded me of accidental sand or shell pieces in seafood, and the chocolate budino was a bit too salty and too large/rich for my taste. Other than those tiny things, the menu was basically perfect.

Didn't seat us until 30 minutes after our 9pm reservation.

2/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Nick P. on 03/15/2024

That's unacceptable and a terrible way to treat your customers. 15 minutes I totally get. 30 minutes speaks to bad management. A terrible start to the meal, and if I were running a place I would have been deeply apologetic and at least offered a drink on the house. Once we were finally seated at 9:30, our waiter promised he would "take great care of us". Then he promptly disappeared and someone else not responsible for us subbed in so that we could place orders. Then she disappeared as well and a third server took over. Actually hilarious. When we finally ordered, we had three starters that we asked to be spaced out. They then sent them out all at once to rush us. There wasn't even room on the table. The food was ok but not worth being treated like this. It is such a shame because we were very excited to come here. It is deeply difficult for food to overcome the foul mood it puts your customers in when you treat them like that. I'm tempted to give them another shot, but I feel like an apology is in order. This was a real fail at basic hospitality.

Overall 8/10 We tried the pasta tasting menu at Flour +

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Elsie D. on 03/07/2024

Overall 8/10 We tried the pasta tasting menu at Flour + Water a few weeks ago, and it was a truly delightful experience. I tried the vegetarian menu and my friend got the regular menu. We both loved the experience. We started off with a savory cannoli which was a delightful bite before moving on to their crudo, arancini and a potato cloud dish. Crude was delightful; arancini was good; the potato cloud was a wonderful dish of flavor and textures that worked together wonderfully. Taleggio was really good. I was a bit skeptical of the balsamic, and was very pleasantly surprised. The saffron malloreddus was one of the best dishes of the night; the flavors worked together perfectly, and crab was delicious. The golden beets complemented the dish wonderfully. The tortellini in the soup broth was lovely. Anoloni was surprisingly good, but not our favorite of the night. Finishing off with the vrache di mulo was probably my second favorite of the night. We ended the night with the chocolate pudding which was wonderful. I've been to their sister restaurants, both of which we loved, so was very happy to enjoy this one as well. Would love to return. Service was nice and attentive as well.

4/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Ivan Z. on 02/27/2024

came here with a friend on a tuesday night and they only had a thirty minute wait which I was pretty happy with. we hung out at his pottery studio nearby while we waited for a table and got to sit at the bar. I will say, it is a bit on the pricier side (expect plates / dishes to be in the 25-30 range) and if you want to do the tasting menu its 135. HOWEVER, even though it's a little bit more expensive (at least for stuff that I enjoy spending), it's really good. it's definitely worth it. Like i probably spent close to a similar amount to this at italian place in other spots around the city and its like... WAY better. we got the 'nduja pizza and the rumpet mushroom pasta and the papperdelle. everything was absolutely amazing and the papperdelle had a meaty quality that reminded me of taiwanese braised beef which was kind of jarring to me. The service was also really kind, but they were a bit slow on the dishes so dinging it for that but the interior is so so cute as well.

We had a most wonderful dinner here the other night.

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Baris B. on 02/19/2024

The sparkling wine was fantastic, and above all, the music wasn't super loud anymore, they listened to the feedback and I was able to hear others without having to yell or get really close to them. That is a game changer for me. Especially since the music is also great as well, which is a pity if it's too loud, right? There were older crowds there as well, this is a great sign as we can infer that people can hear each other. The pizza was a tad salty but I believe that has always been a feature here, not a bug. I still wish it was a teeny bit less salty though. Maybe Thomas may read this, who knows. The beet salad was off the charts incredible, and the Mushroom pasta was delicious. The bread and butter divine. We'll be back soon.

Over priced BUT delicious, but I wish the pasta was highlighted a little more - not every dish needs so much sauce and cheese and whatever else! Let the pasta be the star of the show. Nothing like fresh house made pasta - which they serve here - all I am saying is let it be the sole star of the show in at least one dish. For context - we did the tasting menu. The chip with Caio e Pepe is out do this world!!!

This restaurant definitely lived up to the hype! Had a party of four so did the pasta tasting to try a little bit of everything family style. The pastas were better than the pizzas but the chocolate bundino dessert stole the show - so good! I was surprised that the bill was not significantly pricier than their Penny Roma restaurant down the street.

I was most annoyed about the overall service. I got 4 tasting menus, 2 with wine pairings. How can we eat that fast for that many courses? Disappointed overall. I hope they do better

1/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Jr P. on 02/12/2024

TL;DR Trendy != Good This is my biggest disappointment in SF so far. If you factor the difficulty to get a reservation and the price, this could be the single worst restaurant I've ever dinned at. Let's just start by not forgetting that we were very please with out appetizers. The beat salad was fantastic and so was the tiny ricotta. We ordered 3 pasta dishes: - the pork ravioli [3/5] - the braised pork [1/5] - the mushroom ragu [0/5] Out of the 3 of us none of us could finish our dish, which considering the portion size it pretty shocking, the ravioli order is just a few of them. None of us really appreciated any of them. The braised pork was the best of but like all of them it was bathing in oil and was so rich it's was appetizing. The leftover container themselves could not hold the fatty dishes and leaked all.

1/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Amy B. on 03/08/2023

First off the vibes are rude. The food is so so. You can go to Whole Foods or your local Italian spot to get better tasting food. I live close by and people who go eat here always park in front of our garage so we can't park our cars... we always have to call a towing company to tow their customers from our parking garage. This happens every weekend and every Thur/Fri night. And lastly Flour and Water is so cheap they can't pay their contractors living wages... what a joke of a restaurant. Pay your contractors/employees, offer parking to your customers, stop parking in front of out garage and lastly make food that actually taste good.

The pasta is made in house and very good. What I didn't quite like were the sauces: always a little too much. Some dishes are too spicy or too oily, other dishes have too many flavors. I feel that these types of recipes lack the freshness of Italian cuisine.

.. an upscale, candlelit restaurant that made some Yelpers swoon and others roll their eyes at the hype??? But it was a divine experience, especially for my group of friends who are major foodies. We dissected each dish and enjoyed (...destroyed) every course that came before us. I would say a 4.5, but a few standout dishes helped me bump the review to a 5. Appetizers- ARANCINI: The first plate out, and an absolute surprise starter - the cheese oozed out like fondue, and it fell apart in savory fried goodness in your mouth. - JOSEY BAKER SOURDOUGH: homemade, springy, not super sour, and served warm. A delight in its simplicity for a bread lover. - GRILLED BROCCOLINI : the brown butter and anise gave this a slight Indian spice (for my palette), and it was pretty good. - CITRUS & STRACCIATELLA: a game changer - would 100% recommend this with the bread. There was grapefruit, lime, pistachio, and fennel, all atop the creamiest and freshest cheese. - MARGHARITA PIZZA: not on the menu. It was a bit soggy in the middle, but the dough and tomatoes were SO fresh (the acidity of the tomatoes was really critical), and I could still distinctly taste mozzarella and parmesan. A nice pasta break ;) and I could taste the love kneaded into that pizza. - SQUASH CARAMELLE: Love a good brown butter, squash, sage moment. This hit the spot, though it was on the sweeter side. Obsessed when pasta has a crunchy/textural element (in this case, pepitas). - TALEGGIO SCARPINOCC: I actually don't care for overly creamy/buttery pastas (lactose intolerant Yelpers unite), but this blew. my. mind. The 16-year aged balsamic changed me and had me (and my group) scraping the plate clean, in combination with the rich parmesan butter sauce. Still craving the sweet and salty as I write this. - PEPPER STROZZAPRETI: really good for our last savory course, though it was the weakest flavor wise. I did love the pasta shape/thyme flavor being so strong, just wished there were more mushroom!- CHOCOLATE BUDINO: perfect for a chocolate coffee lover - so creamy and satisfying. The espresso cream added a touch of balance, and the sea salt on top would make any Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat cookbook owners finally understand the value of finishing dessert with high quality salt. - BUTTERMILK VANILLA PANNA COTTA: consistency was amazing, but it could have used a bit more fruit/topping. The sorbet it was served with (for a birthday) was delicious and brought some much needed acid. My only critiques generally were 1) I was hoping for some tomato-based or honestly NOT butter based sauce and 2) I thought every dish could use more veggies/fruits. It did feel a bit like someone counted how many mushrooms were put on the plate :/ They had a special feature of ingredients from their women-owned business/vendors which was nice to see! And shoutout to the server who kept calling us angel and made us feel so at home. And who accidentally brought us some nice tea instead of another table and didn't charge us. Our top 3 MUST TRY's: the Tallegio Scarpinocc pasta, the Citrus + Stratiacella, and the Arancini (and special 4th to the exquisite Chocolate Budino). Pro tip - if you go in a group of 4, they recommend about 2 dishes / person, so 8 for the table. Even with two desserts, it was basically a design your own tasting menu (granted some specialties are not available) for like half the price??? Overall, while it may not hit everyone's mark, F+W does have a sanctity for good pasta, simple but effective flavor combos, and a well-sourced menu that we felt with every bite.

3/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Jacqueline M. on 03/04/2023

My greatest grievance with Flour + Water (and its family of SF restaurants) is that they salt certain desserts. I want to like their desserts. Chocolate budino? I love it. Yes, please. But huge chunks of *salt* all all over my budino? Every single bite of the budino here included at least two hunks of salt. F+W, I beg you: please do not salt your chocolate budino. In the fleeting moments before I crunched down on Nerd-sized pebbles of salt, I could taste your wonderful budino. It's really lovely. And then, as soon as I hear the tell-tale CRUNCH of salt crystals shattering in my mouth, that chocolate flavor is steamrolled by the sharp taste of *salt*. (I ordered the panna cotta at Penny Roma and the budino at F+W, and both places salt these specific desserts. This is a warning to the dozens of salt-sensitive folks out there.)Besides this, F+W is pretty good. We started out with a ricotta cheese appetizer, which was a memorable and very solid dish. Their pasta is really tasty, although the portions are a bit small. My friend and I preferred their pasta dishes to the other entrees. The last thing is that our salsiccia pizza that unfortunately came with anchovies, which wasn't disclosed on the menu. The fish and their little eyes on our pizza was a minor jumpscare. In summary: when at F+W, pick the pasta dishes, and request your dessert to be unsalted.

While some of the pasta dishes are tasty, this restaurant

3/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Emma V. on 02/28/2023

While some of the pasta dishes are tasty, this restaurant is extraordinarily overpriced. The pasta tasting menu left me stuffed but not satisfied, with small portions of pastas spaced confusingly far apart. While we paid for two tasting menus, it felt like we got one. The staff rushed us through the first few courses, bringing new plates to the table before we were finished with the ones we had. Most infuriating was the bill - the two tasting menus ($125 per person), in which most courses were single plates split between two people, and two glasses of wine, came out to $327 before tip. On top of the 6.5% SF mandate and the expectation of at least a 20% tip, the restaurant also adds a 1% charge for a charity. Our waiter explained that they donate 1% of each sale to this charity, which is flatly offensive, since it is actually the customer who is 'donating' 1%. All in all I would not recommend a night out here.

Loud music that doesn't match the food. Service suboptimal- the waiters aren't professional, and some have no idea how to wait tables. Small Italian wine menu for outrageous prices ( a lot of the wines on the list are considered table wines in Italy). Pizza dough needs improvement. Boudin - dessert, delicious, outstanding! Panna cotta- terrible, inedible. Pasta dishes- they are trying too hard. Pasta is a simple dish with one, at most two ingredients.

Why so much hype?

3/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @cathymathilde on 01/14/2023

This highly regarded and difficult to secure reservation was absolutely meh. The portions were small, options limited and taste ok. Def not worth the hype. Also beware, they add tipโ€”even for 4- but donโ€™t point it out, so you could pay more than you want if you arenโ€™t careful.

Each posting on AppointmentTrader shows you which user submitted it and along with that provides a trackrecord of that user which indicates how much experience the user has and how many percent of their transactions resulted in them issuing a refund.

If there is no user posting that fits your schedule, you can bid on your preferred time.

Let's say Peter has a great morning and decides to take his three friends to Flour + Water San Francisco at 6 PM the same day.

He checks the restaurant's website and sees that no reservations are available. He then looks at the Flour + Water San Francisco page on AppointmentTrader, but finds that there are no user postings either.

That's where the community-driven bid process comes in.

Peter can place a bid on AppointmentTrader, which serves as a reward for any community member who chooses to work on securing the reservation. AT then notifies experienced users who may be able to help.

Step-by-Step Process
1.) Setting a Reward (Bid)
* AppointmentTrader uses historical data to recommend a reasonable reward amount for securing a reservation - let's say $100.
* Peter really wants to go, so he increases the bid (or reward) to $200.
* At this stage, the reservation does not exist yet.

2.) A Community User Picks Up the Bid
* FamousStation67, an experienced AT user, has a strong track record of successfully securing reservations and low refund requests, they receive a notification about Peter's bid.
* FamousStation67 picks up the bid, meaning they will now work on securing the reservation.
* Peter can now talk to FamousStation67 for any questions Peter may have as FamousStation67 user fills the bid.

3.) Finding the Reservation
* FamousStation67 now uses their connections at Flour + Water San Francisco to secure the table.
* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
* If FamousStation67 fails to secure the reservation, the bid is returned to the pool so another user can try.

4.) Payment & Protection
* Once the reservation is secured, FamousStation67 receives the $200 reward which is credited to FamousStation67's AT balance, where users manage their own funds and can withdraw via available payout options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or Zelle.
* Peter can now enjoy the dinner with his friends at Flour + Water San Francisco!
* As with all transactions on AT, disputes and no-show fees are handled through the platform's community-driven resolution system. Users with a strong track record are incentivized to fulfill bids successfully, and community members can report issues to maintain trust in the marketplace.
