Once upon a time, my husband and I loved this place, it was a treat. Last night, we gelt nostalgic and though I hate plonking down a credit card to "hold" reservation, against my better judgement, I did exactly that--and regretted it. Not sure why they need a credit card, given that on a Friday night, the restaurant was half empty, though to be fair, we were done and left by the time peak hours hit. We got a bunch of stuff to share: smoked trout, broccoli soup, house vegetable salad, cioppino, and vegetable tasting. When we went in, I was surprised to note that the tables no longer had white tablecloths, as I remembered, and I could be mistaken, maybe they never had them, and now the place was transformed with burnished dark wood tables, which is not shabby, it's just that I'm old and fashioned, where I love the feel of crisp linen white cloths against the backdrop of food, not to mention it's an acoustically dampening effect, which these aging ears welcome. The service was attentive, warm, friendly and just lovely--absolutely no complaints there. The salad was a mess, not so much the ingredients, but the portion was tiny and the balsamic dressing was strong beyond and the entire salad was drenched in it, somebody in the kitchen decided to literally pour it on, and doesn't know the concept of sprinkle. The soup was divine--no cream or milk, made with vegetable stock and strewn with beautiful croutons. It was a healthy portion and fantastic. The smoked trout was one of the best in memory: a silken bit of house smoked trout with a golden exterior, along with house made potato chips and a dill cream dip underneath golden and red beets, with some greens. The perfect bite had bits of all, slightly tangy and creamy, and salty, yummy yum yum. Oh did I mention the amuse bouche? A trio of sunchokes--fried bits, along with roasted and pureed. I adore sunchokes , and then there were the biscuits that made this place famous. Two gorgeous bits of high rising dough, I took off the sesame seeds which I hate and sprinkled it with salt. If there's a better biscuit in town, I don't know it. No joke. Seriously. No southerner could make a biscuit like these guys. Damn. I could eat maybe half a dozen. The cioppino was fine, but I wouldn't write home, e.g. it had am kick but didn't sparkle, didn't wow, didn't sing, like the diva I need my shellfish stew to do. It was full of gorgeous white fish, mussels and clams and other good stuff, came with grilled baguette for dunking in the tomato broth, but for my colitis, it was too spicy, though my husband enjoyed it, which was awesome to see. The vegetable tasting read so well on the menu, which was why I ordered it, but no. No . No. The polenta a joke, so hard, I could barely ram my fork into it, and the issue was not my lack of deltoid or bicep strength. No. It was lacking, and my husband after one bite, had to agree. The spinach and béchamel cannelloni bland as hell, and not worth the amount of cream, butter and whatever else they had in there. The carrots were fine, as were the mushrooms. But really? A few carrots and mushrooms is gonna make a satisfying entree? No. After all the misses, despite the hits, I couldn't bring myself to order a dessert. The interior is a warm and welcoming space, as is the patio seating, which on a dark winter night, they managed to make inviting with the umpteen heating lamps and mood lighting. On a warm summer day and night, I can imagine that it would be inviting for a different reason. I'm hoping that other dishes coming out of this kitchen rivals the execution and quality of their broccoli soup and smoked trout. A kitchen that can do that must be capable of more. I refuse to give up hope and give them the benefit of doubt.
