Emilio's Ballato New York Reviews from The Last Year
Oh my god! I ate here last night with my son, and I declare
Oh my god! I ate here last night with my son, and I declare my chicken parmesan to be my favorite chicken parmesan I've ever eaten, and I've eaten many in my lifetime. In addition, the Caesar salad was pure heaven and perfection. Lettuce was cold and crisp, dressing was so tasty and perfectly peppery! But back to that chicken. It was everything I dream about and more! So thin, so crisp, so absolutely delectable. It had the perfect amount of the perfect, naturally sweet marinara sauce on it, and the cheese was slightly browned, and I could taste some Parm in there, too. This chicken literally melted in my mouth as I ate it. My son ate a bit of mine, but I wouldn't give up much. We were tempted to order another whole entree of it, but we held ourselves back. I will be back there very, very soon.
They overcharged me by hundreds of dollars and do not pick
They overcharged me by hundreds of dollars and do not pick up the phone. If you choose to dine here, take a copy of the receipt with you!!! Credit card companies will not accept a dispute without a receipt. Got totally scammed by this place.
Shocked this place is still has so much buzz, it's mid tear
Shocked this place is still has so much buzz, it's mid tear Italian peasant food with the WORST service in the game. What a disappointing experience. Italian restaurants are meant to be warm and all about hospitality. I've never seen a more joyless group of people working at a restaurant. Starting with the hostess who yelled at us from across the restaurant for not understanding their draconian line politics. To the waiter who had the all the personality of a farm hand shoveling slop into a feed bucket. On top of all that its almost insulting what they are charging for what is essentially Nona's Sunday gravy. I would expect to be treated like a king if I'm dropping $40 for chicken f*cking parm. Instead I'm shuffled to me seat and rushed through the dining experience by rude people. Then expected to smile and say thank you when its all over. Brought my family in from out of town who love Italian food, and dining experiences. What they got was a true New York night out, they paid way to much money to be treated like sh*t.
We've been going to this establishment for over 15 years
We've been going to this establishment for over 15 years our top five places to eat in nyc or once was! Now it's a social club. They have a new hostess who is rude loud and disrespectful. While waiting on line for 2 hours the owner gets to pick out his friends and who they think is "who" to be seated in front of your face as you still wait! The ambience now loud and obnoxious as you hear the hostess voice screaming at everyone and for the first time the food wasn't worth the wait ! Everything went downhill ! So disappointed the only good thing our waiter for all those years recognized us and tried to do right by us saw us waiting like dogs but wasn't allowed the hostess wouldn't allowed it ! we were loyal patrons for over 15 years, not coming there for the trend know the difference!
Unbelievable Food Experience!
Just go! Just do your tastebuds a favor, book a reservation (if you can) or go early and get ready to fall in love! The fresh table bread is unbelievably good. We had the veal special and tagliatelle bolognese that were both just out of this world!!! I was uncertain of what I wanted to order so they just brought me the most amazing spaghetti dish with cheese (no sauce). We could not have asked for a better meal outside of Italy itself. Go, go, go!
Food was average at best service was terrible the waitress
Food was average at best service was terrible the waitress was the owners wife. Looked at us like we were an inconvenience I can tell you there's one reason this location gets business and it's for whatever goes down in the back room. The 8$ chicken cutlet charging 40+$ get real I've had better street food. I'd say if you want that NY old mulberry st scene you see in movies ok, but not good food. Table bread was the best part she tells us as we sit down. "Order everything at once I can't keep coming back and fourth",,,,,, What shoulda walked out rite there.
Horrendous service.
The restaurant says they do not take reservations and queuing is required but we waited for two hours (in a line of five people) as groups showed up and were seated right away - skipping the queue. The food is mediocre and absolutely NOT worth it - especially when there are so many honorable establishments in the vacinity.
The perfect atmosphere for what we were hunting: old
The perfect atmosphere for what we were hunting: old school, no nonsense Italian. The food was perfect as well. We got the zucchini appetizer and pastas which were all incredible. The bread they give you at the beginning has a thin layer of tomato sauce that was outstanding. The only reason I won't be returning was for the prices, which I found to be very bloated for what we got, even for New York City. For example, a small plate of spaghetti with basic red sauce is currently 33 dollars. This, in a divey, shoe box of a restaurant (which is part of the charm and a pro, but does not make any sense with the prices). But a one time great experience, for sure!
Biggest disappointment.
Don't waste your money or time! Super mid overpriced food. Emilio himself basically accosted us before we entered the restaurant. That is the most crass, vulgar, mean man you'd ever want to meet. If my family had not really wanted to stay I would have left then. In the end we were all sad we stayed. Service was terrible & rude. Diff rules & diff menu if you're not their friend or a celebrity. You can sit and watch other people be treated so much better than you if you're just a nobody to them. But that's bogus bc everyone should be treated equally in a restaurant. People are paying to eat your food...be nice to them! I couldn't wait to get out of there. The food was very mid. At best. Sooo much better Italian food in NYC. My fam did say the veal parm was great but that was it out of five entrees and salad and three apps! everything else was very lackluster. don't give this guy your business. he could care less about you unless you're a celebrity anyway. you could literally have a better meal at an Olive Garden than here but seriously, there's so much great Italian food in NYC don't waste a minute on this slop.
Absolutely delicious! I can honestly say this was the best
Absolutely delicious! I can honestly say this was the best pasta i've ever had! The flavors in this dish are amazing! Pasta and shrimp was cooked perfectly! The flavors in that sauce, man, i cant describe it. Pure deliciousness. I will definitely return whenever in NYC! Service was great. I think he was the manager. Friendly Italian guy with an accent. Explained the menu well and gave recommendations. Restaurant is small but it gives you a more intimate feel. We were walked through the restaurant, through the kitchen and into a backroom. I felt like Henry Hill from Good Fella's (lol). That room felt like it held mob meetings before. Something you'd see in a movie. I spoke to Emilio when i was leaving. Thanked him and told him the food was delicious. He smiled and thanked us for coming by. Very nice guy. Overall, i had a geeat experience and i will definitely be returning.
Best chicken cutlet of my fucking life.
The wait is not as bad as people say it is, have some respect for the guys who have been doing it forever.
The best italian restaurant I have been to and eaten at in America. No joke.
The best italian restaurant I have been to and eaten at in America. No joke. This place could go toe to toe with anywhere in Italy. The wait sucks but it is worth it everytime. I've waited out in the cold in February for over an hour before and will do it every time no questions asked when I visit new york. Huge HUGE fan.
Excellent!
Wow, I must have forgotten to review this place because my first time here was many years ago, probably 8-10 years ago. We came here many more times after that, too, so I had the review on Yelp, but forgot to review here. So, here’s one for the fantastic Italian classic restaurant in New York that will never die. The best Italian restaurant in the city! I encourage you to try at least once if your trip brings you to NY. If you live in NY, visit anytime. Come here for the best Caesar salad, broccoli rabe, and pasta dishes. I’ve tried many, but the latest was shrimp fra diavolo, which was exquisite! They have the best tomato sauce. The pasta was ready at the right time. I want to copy my dish and try it at home, but it won’t turn out well like the one I had here, lol. Hubby had chicken Milanese, and it was excellent. The taste was consistent, and I must tell you that they have the best pasta sauce taste and ingredients to make pasta dishes. The restaurant has two dining areas. It has the looks of an old Italian cafe and restaurant. The owner, Emilio, and his sons, Anthony and Mario work hard to provide the best service and meals. I think there’s another son but we hardly saw him there but the two are always around. They can be seen working and talking to patrons at the restaurant, and they all know how to cook Italian food, which is so awesome! Best food and service! Thanks! Highly recommended!
Great find. Traditional cosy Italian restaurant
Loved the ambience, excellent food and traditional setting. Service was great although felt the owner was more interested in his regular guests and ensuring the door was shut. Despite his “hospitality” loved the food and decor
If you want authentic Italian that's more about the food,
If you want authentic Italian that's more about the food, than the hype, this place is it. Every dollar is well spent. You'll always see the owners at the corner table in the entrance. We waited in the rain (no reservations) before the restaurant opened and it was worth it. The bread service with tomato sauce was beyond. The linguine w/ white clam sauce was akin to the one I had in Italy. The tiramusu, though heavy on the cream, was inhaled by all those at the table. Next time I'm in NY, this will be my first stop.
Old school italian restaurant frequented by celebrities.
No reservations and it's difficult to get one of the 10ish tables for dinner but it's not hard to get one for a midweek lunch. Chicken Parm and Spaghetti & Meatballs were both excellent and the free bread with the table was also very good. Keep in mind that while the chicken parm is really good, it's $40 for one piece of chicken and no sides. That said, it's worth a visit.
The hype is real!! We came on a Friday at 4:45pm and there
The hype is real!! We came on a Friday at 4:45pm and there was 1 person ahead of us. We waited until 5pm and then were seated. Everyone was very attentive, kind, and patient with us. We were give complimentary focaccia bread that was delicious and hard not to fill up on. We ordered a bottle of the montepulciano wine which went PERFECTLY with everything we ordered. We ordered the ravioli pasta, the amatriciana, the chicken parmesan, and the Caesar salad. We had a group of three that was plenty for us. We also ordered the cheesecake and the tiramisu to split between us. Everything was absolutely divine. The ravioli was simple but really stood out to me and the chicken parm was definitely the best I've ever had. Caesar salad was good too. The tiramisu was a must order, it was incredible, light yet filling, and so so delicious. Cheesecake was simple and fantastic. Cannot rave enough about the food, the party I came with also still talk about the food even though it's been a month. Ambiance is also very cool! Old school Italian (I think?) and had a lot of interesting pictures on the walls. Can't wait to come back!
Had lunch there with my son this past Friday.
Opened at 12:00, we got there around 12:15 and were the 3rd table. In terms of the vibe , classic joint with a real old-world feel. Somewhat reminiscent (minus the celebrity photos) of another local place that I absolutely loved but unfortunately closed back in 2021 (Volare). Place filled up while we were there (all tables occupied by the time we left ~ 2pm). Food wise - real good. We had two special appetizers (mozzarella carrozza & grilled octopus). For our entrees, I had the shrimp fra diavalo over linguine which was spicy but not too, very delicious and my son had the chicken parm - also delicious. Drinks ... two bottles of sparkling water and a single Negroni. We passed on desserts opting to walk a few blocks and get cookies from Levain. All-in-all ... was a great lunch with greater company. Bill came to $190 + tip ($22 for a small Negroni ... come on but oh well). Overall - glad we went.
Waited over an hour outside (watched multiple groups of
Waited over an hour outside (watched multiple groups of people who "knew" someone inside form a separate line and make it in before us). After an hour and a half, we made it inside. The service started off strong but there's only 2 waiters - the host and another waiter servicing the entire front room. With pasta at $40 was expecting a larger portion and more flavor. The Cesar salad ($27) was 6 pieces of romaine lettuce and nothing to write home about. Best part of our meal was the homemade limoncello at the end. Unfortunately, satisfied I experienced it but sadly NOT worth the hype of 1k reviews and wait time. Save yourself some time and $ and check out another NYC Italian favorite.
Wait staff could not have made it more uncomfortable to
Wait staff could not have made it more uncomfortable to spend $1500 for 8 people. Had to be reminded multiple times that we had to spend $185 per person because we were a table of 8 instead of 6. Food was good but atmosphere was terrible
Writing this while sitting inside the restaurant.
We eat out a lot and here's my review: food is ok but definitely NOT great. Absolutely NOT the best chicken parm I've had..far from it. I agree with other reviewers: there's a long line outside but there were also plenty of people who cut the line. It's def not first come, first served. Also, Jimmy Murtagh fans: don't make the mistake I did. Don't believe the hype. I promise you the juice is not worth the squeeze. There are far better place where you'll be treated far far better. Also, beware of fake reviews from people who have only ever written 1-2 reviews. PS- tiramisu was mediocre at best. Subpar, actually.
Loved this place.
Stereotypical NYC Italian restaurant, but great ambience service - and the food was amazing.
Third time attempting & first time actually waiting it out.
Best Italian meal I've ever had. Period. Worth the wait & you never know what a-list celeb you might see.
Great warm ambiance and food is always impeccable.
I love the linguine with clams so much!
Emilio Ballato
I have tried probably 20+ different chicken parms in my short 27 years on this beautiful rock that is floating in an ever expanding universe, but this one really changed my life. We came later on a Wednesday night, and were seated immediately by Emilio himself. He was just posted up outside, he must really love this sh*t ahahahahaa. You walk into a small dining room, and are surrounded by framed pictures of celebrities with Emilio, or a signed picture addressed to him. My mind began to wonder and think he must be at least slightly narcissistic, but concluded a narcissistic person would likely run a restaurant better as they are motivated by extrinsic goals such as money or fame as opposed to intrinsic goals such as healthy relationships or personal growth. Okay, Enough of the armchair psychology Johnny. Fine. This was my favorite Italian food I have had in NYC. But I haven't been to Carbone yet so idk. The bread was elite as it actually had a bit of red sauce on it. Nice touch, Emilio. We opted for calamari, the bolognese, and of course the chicken parm. The bolognese and chicken parm went together like 2005 Reggie Bush and LenDale White. Mf Unstoppable. He can be as narcissistic as he wants, but if Emilio keeps cooking up these god-tier chicken parms I will keep coming back. THANK YOU EMILIO! IG @jnov_ TIktok @jnov__
Nothing like the first time..
Unfortunate that I have to change my 5 star review to a 1-star. Really great experience first time around by the son of the owner, Mario. Second time around, probably the worst dining experience I have ever had. We waited outside for over a half hour for a table (if just about everyone in front of us did not leave it would have been a lot longer). Once we were inside I was told to go to a certain table and some older guy stood in front of me and barked "Can I help you?" before he moved out of the way and allowed us to proceed to our table. We had a waiter that was inattentive and rude. He could care less about us as customers and didn't even check in once aside from bringing the food and the check. I don't mind an unexpected long wait time for a table but not to be systemtically treated like trash with a close relative. Not to mention I was told previously that being seated at 2pm would not be an issue by 'someone' at the restaurant. So careful when using the email on the website because you don't know who are talking to. We really have no reason to return.
Worth the wait
Definitely worth the wait. Arrived at 5 on a Sunday and was seated by 5:45, 6. I was solo and met a Mom/Daughter and another solo- we combined into a 4 top/shared entrees and it will be one of my favorite memorable dining experiences for life.
Not Worth the Wait
TLDR: do not attempt to eat here if you are not a regular diner at the restaurant. We had heard great things about this restaurant and it seems many others had too. When we arrived around 6.30pm the restaurant was full and there were 8 other couples lined up outside. We decided to wait since they do not take reservations, calculating that the most we would probably have to wait would be about an hour. What we didn’t realize at that time was that they have a backdoor process for family, friends and regular diners. So diners would arrive, talk to the servers and then walk around the back of the building and get right in. We waited over 2.5 hours to get in to eat!!! We are not unreasonable and whilst we completely understand that a restaurant wants to take care of their regular and loyal clientele, we had no way to gauge how long we would have to wait and it was so demoralizing to watch a bunch of diners leave, thinking it was going to be our turn to get in soon and then having to continue to endlessly wait, while all the backdoor diners got seated ahead if us. It is a terrible system for the non regular diner and ultimately had we known we would have had to wait that long we would have left. The food itself is delicious, but definitely not worth the overall experience of trying to actually get into the restaurant
Leave it for Taylor Swift
We were waiting outside and some kind of maitre let us know that better to take a table of ten btw the ones we were waiting than stay till midnight…a true lie , many tables were available within 15 minutes…same person that brought us main dishes when we just started our apetizers…food somewhat good but not to die for…..expensive and service to forget…Italy? Italy is far away from ballato
Spaghetti Al Pomodoro - delicious!
Spaghetti al Pomodoro is what I usually like to have when I go to a new restaurant. If the sauce is well flavored then I know that I should return to have other dishes. When I went to Emilio’s Ballato this is what I ate. I also had an appetizer of the broccoli di rape as I like butter vegetables especially when garlic is featured No reservations are taken here but on the weekdays the wait was not long.
Excellent
What a wonderful find! Excellent menu, expertly cooked at a reasonable l e price. Get in line fast as it fills up by 4:50 and always a line after that. Sea bass was expertly cooked, with clams. Foccacia was tasty and wonderfully cooked. Pasta was al dented and meatballs were the highlight. Wonderful evening. Thanks emelio
Not worth it! Owner rude to guests when complimented the overpriced food, not even a smile.
Please please please understand what you are getting into before you go . . . Celebrities go here so it’s a popular hot spot. They don’t take reservations which is fine, we stood in line for 1 1/2 hours before we were seated and the food was worth it. The service was also good. But the OWNER, he’s a curmudgeon (mean old man, makes curmudgeon sound nice)he walked through the restaurant, and as a couple from the UK complimented on how good the food was, (I sat right beside them) he did NOT Thank them, in fact, he ignored them, and made the entire experience not worth it at all. I felt so bad for this couple. They had waited in line for almost 2 hours and didn’t even get a thank you when they praised the meal, not even a smile or nod. It was a very uncomfortable experience overall. The owner engaged in a heated discussion with an elderly man after he asked the man at the door about wait time. Bottom line, food REALLY good, service good and polite, atmosphere tense and stressful.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.
Worked perfectly, thank you!
This is a crazy holiday season in NYC and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that AppointmentTrader works! Will be using again!
Worked flawlessly!
Worked so well! I was a bit nervous, but everything went very smoothly. purchased the reservation, and got into the restaurant seamlessly.
Love this app!
So glad I came across this app :)
Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res
instead of waiting weeks I got my 4 charles reservation instantly
Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
