Food and service could use some work.
While the ambiance sorta reigns it all in, but that's purely because of the history and the amazing hotel Chelsea.Other than that, if I was purely judging the experience for what it was... I'd roll my eyes at all the bullsh*t.That ribeye, albeit thin, was delicious and even the fat melts in your mouth, but the lobster, I guess I got the half with absolutely no meat other than the little tail meat you see next to the clarified butter in the pic I attached to the review. The claw too. I wouldn't tell anyone they needed to go there but I would recommend walking through to the hotel and lobby bar, along with all the other beautiful spaces.
Be the first to ReplyOverall the food is good but not outstanding.
The main problem with the new incarnation is that there is no table management and they don't care. If you have a reservation, be prepared for a good half hour wait past your reservation time before being seated. Major attitude problems with the hosting staff; rude, curt and uncaring. Food isn't good enough to overcome poor management.

Came in for a quick drink and a couple next to us had ordered an appetizer that looked so good I had to order it myself! It was absolutely delicious ! Really enjoyed my time here! Sat down at the bar! The ambiance and decor of the place are very elegant! I would come back here definitely to try more dishes!

The restaurant is over 100 years old with many original features (ironwork, murals, even some light fixtures). We were immediately seated in a little booth for dinner - comfy for two, would have been VERY tight for four. Complementary cava was brought out as it was the one year anniversary of their reopening. DRINKS:- the Las Palmas is a MUST! One of the best cocktails both of us have ever had- the Rebujitos was tasty and refreshing (would have been perfect on a hot summer day), but I switched over to the las palmas after one of theseFOOD: our server was very knowledgeable about celiac accommodations. Everything on the menu except for two dishes could be made gluten free. We ordered:- Tortilla de Patata, which was delicious and tasted like the one my host mom used to make back when I studied in Spain during college- Crudo de Atún, sliced incredibly thin and in the most light and refreshing citrus and slightly spicy sauce- Morcilla, which sounds weird in its description, but TRUST ME, this is a delicious interpretation of a traditional Spanish dish and should not be missed- Patatas Bravas, which were fine, but not special enough that I'd order again- Arroz Meloso con Mariscos, which was as close to paella as they serve. Great flavor and topped with the most amazing fried rosemary that I am still thinking about. I personally didn't love that it had butternut squash in it, but easy enough to eat aroundDESSERT: we were celebrating a birthday and they kindly brought out chocolate soft serve chocolate that was less rich than expected, almost like a sorbet, and drizzled with olive oil and crushed nuts. A very sweet gift and although we did enjoy it, I prefer my soft serve to be creamier. Overall, wonderful ambiance, service, food, and drinks! Tons of gluten free options with very knowledgeable and accommodating staff!!

The decor and service were nice, but out of the 9 dishes (6 apps, 3 entrees)the 4 of us tried, not one of the dishes stood out (and the shrimp were sent back as they had that earthy dirt taste after one bite). We had a nice time with our friends, but the food was literally forgetful which is pathetic as the bill was $400. I can see coming back for a drink at the bar or their lounge, but I wouldn't get food again.

The drinks were OK and the appetizers we shared were not very tasty. I'm not sure I would come back here or recommend.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is smaller than I expected.
It's beautifully decorated with Spanish themed paintings. The waiters were wearing scarlet jackets, you can sense the Spanish ambiance. After checking in with the hostess, it's take some time to be seated. Our waiter was courteous but not too engaging. He asked us how the food was. However, after we finished our meal, he abandoned us. Thankfully, this nice friendly lady helped taking the plates away and informed us the dessert menu.Endive salad: nice presentation as it was stacked up, a lot chopped green olives. It's a bit too salty for me because of the olive. Other than that, it's a nice appetizer. Beef cheek cannelloni: the pasta was fresh, the beef was tender with flavorful broth. My husband had hake fish with roasted pepper and potato confit. Fish was perfectly cooked and everything was tasty
Be the first to ReplyThe food was good but the service left a lot to be desired.
Immediately upon being seated at 5:30pm we were told our table needed to be vacated by 7pm. Our waiter never came back once to ask how things were or if we would like more to drink. Though several members of the wait staff walked by, no one removed plates,. We had to push aside our appetizer plates to make room for our entree when it arrived. Paella was a special as was lobster. Our waiter told us the lobster was $80; the waiter for the neighboring table told his patrons the lobster was $76. Go figure.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a spectacular evening at El Quijote.
It was our anniversary and they treated us very well. Spectacular atmosphere and the food is the best Spanish food I've had in New York.

First of all, I had a 5:45 reservation and was told that I had to be out by 7:00!! Attitude before I hadn't even sat yet. Then we were three MEN, crammed into a booth for two. I'm am 67, remembering the old days of a large restaurant now chopped down to eating in a bar. A LOUD bar, we left after more attitude.

. lots of good memories from the old place...they are trying very hard, a very professional staff.... But unfortunately the menu needs to be improved to get close to the old great place...the new concept it's very interesting... will check this place again soon..
Be the first to ReplyA once great hangout has been reinvented with great care
A once great hangout has been reinvented with great care and expense with (perhaps intentional) so-so results: The Bohemian hideout magic of the place is gone. The new owners should be careful about celebrating that this used to be a favorite haunt of Andy Warhol (they took away his back room) and Patti Smith since their favorite dishes (shrimp in green sauce, paella) are no longer on the menu, replaced with overly sophisticated and expensive items like a petite Iberico pork cutlet for $60. (They do still offer the paella, but at $72). The "Wonderful Weirdness" is gone along with the garlic chicken and the softly piped in mid - century muzak. The new El Quijote is for the rich and the out-of-towner. Maybe it's good for business, but it's a little sad nonetheless.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome.
So happy to have this place in the neighborhood. Super-cool design and vibe. Great ingredients and flavors, without being salty or oily. Cocktails were ridiculously good - must try the Portonico. We also had delicious glass of Garnacha Blanca wine. Interesting selections. Go early. Will be back. Yum.

Disappointed, nothing from original menu, more tapas style dining, extra small portions all À la cart.Three dinners food was a disappointment we all left SAD & hungry..Food Nothing like the original place .Big disappointment!!My chicken skewers which contained 12 little pieces was undercooked poorly seasoned and raw in center. The shrimp option 4 head on shrimp that were impossible to peel and I ended up eating the shell.. and a half lobster my friend ordered was so smoky tasting it was unenjoyable..The best thing was the bread bruschetta..And at the end of our meal we had to decide where we were gonna go for dinner! We were so excited about the reopening of his place but unfortunately we left sad and disappointed. The wait staff was good and the host knew their hospitality job really well. Can't really say much else nice about the experience.

What a triumphant comeback! The best revival of a classic NYC eatery of 2022. The staff, the service, the food, all surpassed and exceeded our expectations. The Sunday group has hit it out of the park with this one. Thank you all for a delicious and wonderful evening. We will be back. With friends. PS. Have the paella!

Chef Byron Hogan found a way to make even the most mundane things amazing. We had the Patatas and we were blown away by the crispy exterior and soft interior. The tomato and aioli dip are amazing too.The pan con tomate was another example of something common which Chef Byron makes unforgettable. The bread was perfectly toasted to keep it from getting soggy, and the tomato was smooth and has a rich flavor that I haven't experienced in similar dishes, like bruschetta. The chicken with North Africa spices also defied expectations. First, the chicken was cooked to perfection. The spices were bold, but not overpowering and the pickled veggies compliment the flavor so well.

I loved he old restaurant and we had so many wonderful memories of the staff and the food. We even took a class there from my daughter's junior high as a field trip, he waiters made the students order in Spanish! What a disappointment it was to take relatives to the new restaurant. My nephew ordered a dish that was so small, he ordered the same entree twice. My paella barely fed one person. Most of the dishes I had loved were gone from the menu. The paella, for about $80 with tax added, wasn't enough for one person. As we live so close, I was heartbroken that this won't be our favorite restaurant anymore. Won't return, sadly.
Be the first to ReplyA horrible dining experience.
I paid $30 for a plate of pork and beans. Do not get the truffle sausage. Absolutely disgusting. My friend ordered the $65 whole lobster and it barely had any meat in it. For an appetizer we had the fried potato for $13. One potato poorly fried with garlic mayo on the side that they tried to pass off as aioli. When we asked if the lobster had a side that came with it , we were told that the side was a lemon wedge that we can squeeze over the lobster shell. I call it a lobster shell because a real lobster has meat in it. The old El Quijote was amazing. I would give this restaurant negative stars if I could. Don't waste your time and money. I had to go out to eat after. Never again.

Following a four-year hiatus during which it seemed the remodeling of the Chelsea Hotel would never end, the beloved century-old restaurant has finally reopened. I dined there this evening and had a great time but, sadly, all that's left of the old place is the decor. Revealingly, the name El Quijote does not appear on the check, only that of the Chelsea Hotel.Whereas the old menu was enormous, this one is one spare page and everything is à la carte; no more soup, salad and main course! I was distressed to find no lobster, but it now appears under the virtually unheard of name of bogavente, which came with half a lemon. I was told that $32 for the half-lobster was a special introductory offer to avoid upsetting the old-timers but that it would soon go up.The food is actually far more sophisticated and better than that of yore and the service more professional - there's no sign of the old Spanish waiters. But the greatest loss is that down-at-heels charm of long tradition.
Be the first to ReplyEl Quijote is open again but mucho differente than in was.
Of course it is more expensive and has been taken over by The Hospitality Group which buys iconic restaurants only to commercialize them. It is smaller with no backroom. No more glasses of sangria and the cocktails are awful and dig this they have Paella for $70 a pop but it has rabbit in it. Wow rabbit, RIP Bugs Bunny. No more lobster specials. It used to be cool place where the Chelsea Hotel crowd dined now it is just another tourist trap. I went there once a week in the past for the big portions and friendly waiters and desert cart. I split without ordering. The only thing the same is the wallpaper but no windmills.
